- This is a wonderful show made in Japan in 1964 featuring The Four Freshmen's Group 4: Bob Flanigan, Bill Comstock, Ross Barbour, and Ken Albers. Things to note are the high production value - for the time the audio quality was quite high. Also note the staging and camera use. Certainly this was a first class production where the Four Freshmen really can look their best. Very special thanks goes to Yas Ichiura, the Japanese Representative to the Four Freshmen Society, for finding this gem of Fresh history!
You're welcome. My dear friend Yas is Japanese, and was able to find these nearly lost treasures and bring them to all of us. I'm glad you are enjoying them!
Yay!!!!
Hilo, that’s part of your name is a salute to that other boys group. Lol
@@eugenesedita In 10 years, you might be the 1st person to notice!
Wow. I never thought I'd see much, if any, film or video of the Freshmen of this era!! THANK YOU so much for posting!!! Those Japanese musicians have chops to boot!!!
Back in the 80's, my roommates & I (me in a metal band, the others in funk & pop bands) use to listen to these guys with dropped jaws. Now, thirty years after those nearly thirty years, these guys remain absolutely amazing!
my favorite all time vocal group. I met them at Coral Gables night club in E Lansing, Michigan in 1957. They were very personable and welcoming to their fans. Unique style and harmony was so easy to listen to.
They are just the best vocal group---EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is one more illustration of why it is that music IS our universal language. -----------Done with real class.
Wow! What a treat! You-tube trumps my HD tv & cable again!
AWESOME AS EVER.. living in the best years of my life & the treasured lessons of youth & sweet innocence. A beautiful time like no other.
This group of the FRESHMEN is GREAT and so is the Japanese backup players. I really like the way this was done. Tnx for posting these great tunes.
I first hear them at Ohio University in 1954. Loved all their songs ever since. Can’t hear enough
I heard them LIVE when I was a teen,,,,never will forget how wonderful they were...their harmony ...........perfection!
fantastico! Puts any modern boy band to shame! These men were so harmonically in tune with each other. Amazing talents!
OMG, these guys were just soooo good. It's also interesting to compare this lineup with today's; Bob Flanigan will be the 1st to say it: today's group hits these notes just as clean--but with Brian Eichenberger's soaring high tenor, it makes a huge difference. Also, Bob & Vince are both so strong in their lower notes, the Harmony seems stronger. --Both are sensational. Real close harmony. Wolfsky9
I never got to see them perform, (I was working too) but I've been a fan of The Four Freshmen as long as I can remember. Even when the group changed members, they kept their harmony and style, and it is incredibly beautiful. As a musician I can appreciate every nuance and the way this group presents some of the best old standards that have, like me, been around for years, but their value is proved by all the many who perform these great old song, where the lyrics are' meaningful and relatable and STILL pull at my heartstrings!
i cant believe i havent seen this video until now! i'm always looking for freshmen content on here and I never heard one of the older groups doing polkadots and moonbeams! what lovely songs, thank you so much!!!
Yes, yes, thank you for this wonderful stuff. I've been a big fan since the 60s and still am, undiminished.
First rate clip of a first rate quartet filmed by a first rate camera crew! Outstanding! Thank you for the upload. This clip is a gem!!!!
Awesome Trombone group WoW!!
1st rate. Classic
Never missed them when they often came to the Boston area. They each played instruments as well.
R.I.P. Ross and Bob..who recently went to spend eternity with all of the jazz greats.. Rest well boys..
Paul Bellefeuille I heard them live in Manchester U.K in early 60's apart from Ross and Bob who else is deceased?
wow! thanks so much for uploading this. I always wanted to see the Freshmen in this era. In Japan to boot. so cool, thanks dude.
This is a great harmony study.
just fantastic!
Have you transcribed any of these pieces? A tall task to be sure.
Peter hoppen Limes very much this Group in Times of the 50s many Otter groups were there such als Four preis Four lass Four Aces echt okay
Dudes rockin a French Horn! Gotta luv that!
Left the Club Alliance (Yokosuka, Japan) one morning and took a bus ride to see this show in person.May have been a rehearsal, but they were great, The Japanese band a knock-out...Sorry but what I saw was live, enough microphone pops and clicks, gaffs and such to make you appreciate the professionalism of all around putting on a live show for the servicemen.these guys were great and greatly appreciated by us stationed out there on the moon....
Paradise, you experienced a unique part of good history. If I had been there I'm sure I would have bought you a drink.
たしか日本テレビでやっていたような気がします。それにしても当時腕こきのトロンボーンがたくさんいたのには驚きです。
Brian Wilson heard them singing in his dad’s car on the radio ask who that was and the rest is history that’s where he got that harmony sound.
Yes, but also he got from Doo-wop, he liked groups of that genre like Jan And Dean and Dion And The Belmonts. In songs like Car Crazy Cutie or Surfin' and the Surfin' Safari album you can notice the musical style of Doo-Wop.
Fantastic! thanks for posting these.
I smiled @ 5:40 when Ross with lips pursed...waiting for the sync. These are absolutely my favorite videos.
the four freshmen and the five trombones
A peerless group which influenced countless other musical groups, including the Beach Boys.
Just having moved to Chicago in 1965 I saw them at Arie Crown Theatre with the Kenton Orchestra and June Christy. I got the last available seat, front row center. It was like going to heaven. The concert start to finish was perfect.
Incredible👏👏
I found this track in someones trash can, I love the whole record but this song especially!
We realize they've had many singers over the years making up their group, but this is one of the best! Wonderful harmony. Great brass (trombones) with them too. And that one man plays the French Horn and the trumpet also! Wow!
M.J. Leger. Kenny. Albers
M.J. Leger. Ken Albers
Ken Albers was a wonderful addition .
Something about this song really gets me...just gorgeous!
for polka dots and moon beams go to 5:40 love that song and was looking for it everywhere by these guys they sing it best
You may be surprised to learn that the male singing groups from MoTown also claimed the be influenced by the harmony of the Freshmen; specifically, the Temptations. Good harmony transcends all genres.
Brian Wilson credits the Four Freshmen for his inspiration for developing the Beach Boys vocals.
The Fabulous Four Freshmen!
Thanks for uploading this video on youtube! What a nice sound and hermoney they did play! We will never encounter such a beautiful vocal group and Japanese jazz musicians, as well.
素晴らしすぎて涙が溢れてしまう。 「In TOKYO」はファン必携の名盤だから頑張って再発して欲しい!!
flashback....played this album to death!
Thank you mharbaugh and 'Yas'!
thank you .thankyou.absolute knockout.nuff said.
The beach boys liked this group.
2:04 THATS A LOT OF TROMBONES, BROTHER.
MODERN ARTESTS HAVE NO CLUE .
I met them in 1964 at Elitch's Gardens Denver. Bill Comstock used to be in a group called The Standouts with Bob Jackson, Bud Warner and Lee Raymond. Bill went with The Freshmen and Jack Tafoya joined. They had Denver pianist Bud Poindexter and he left and wonderful guitarist Paul Raley joined. The Standouts were great! I was married to Bob Jackson. Bob was a superb singer and musician who wanted to be called an entertainer.
@MyToniolo : ce genre d'harmonisation est profondement americain, de la veritable amerique provincial. J'etais enfant a 150km du village -- Columbus Indiana -- d'ou ont sorti les Four Freshmen.
Animan studios gi bananas song:
yes
@hommefriday Unfortunately I don't have any hard copies of these performance. But they will always be on UA-cam!
@BeachBoysGuy1 Hey, right on, Bro. I always said too. Two great groups who were of utmost importance in the development of vocal harmony style in pop music. Today still many groups of this day are directly and strongly influenced by these guys.

@mharbaugh Would it be possible to get this video (even a copy)? Would it be available in Japan? I first saw the Freshman in London in 1960 - and they have made me feel good ever since. It was amazing they got their sound through just one microphone. Their style of harmony was unique - such a warm sound. And boy could they swing - my favourite swinging number is " Day by Day". The five 5 trombones are perfect for "Angel Eyes". Thanks for posting this.
Trombons, Voices, Fucking Awesome!!!!!
Thanks for posting!!
I LOVE IT!!!
No Auto tune!
0:00 angel eyes...3:25 route 66...5:38 polkadots n moonbeams
The Four Freshmen were incomparable...........
I don't see any microphones. Perhaps they pre-recorded the audio then lip-synced. Lawrence Welk used to do it. Still phenomonal, thanks for posting!
+PTmayotte You are correct!
They probably used super tiny clip-on condenser Mics :P
Overhead mic's, or like Haddock says.
Good jod soldier in Pacific ; )
Stan Kenton was right!
This is kinda groovy!!!...:)O(:...
At about 3:25 'it's OK to let your hair down...I got some beer and the highway is still free..!..I think???...hehehe...:)O(:..
I can imagine that Brian Wilson was paying great attention to what these boyz were up to!?!...)O(..
Charles Chandler And Franky Valli too.
Makes me wanna gas up the car and go...
Add chuck Berry and you get the makings of The Beach Boys !
