- This is a wonderful show made in Japan in 1964 featuring The Four Freshmen's Group 4: Bob Flanigan, Bill Comstock, Ross Barbour, and Ken Albers. Things to note are the high production value - for the time the audio quality was quite high. Also note the staging and camera use. Certainly this was a first class production where the Four Freshmen really can look their best. Very special thanks goes to Yas Ichiura, the Japanese Representative to the Four Freshmen Society, for finding this gem of Fresh history!
The 4 Freshmen are great as usual. The japanese back up is EXCELLENT.
The Freshmen at their very best !
Rare footage, and so well produced by the Japanese. A classic video !
I saw them that same year in Anchorage, Alaska. They got around, didn't they? They were AMAZING!
these are great clips.the four freshmen have been like a good friend to me for 60 yrs always there when you need them.many thanks.
So good! Just think what a golden age that was with the Freshmen and the Hi Los... The balance on these Japanese performances is interesting with Bill Flanigan(?) high up in the mix enabling his tenor voice to come through very strongly. What a find!!
The best vocal group of all time
I just found this - Great I have been a fan every since I first herd this group-I'm now 85 and I have always enjoyed each group but this group I feel was the greatest.
Hang in there Phil, may you enjoy this music many more years.
I'm glad everybody enjoys the video. It was last February when Greg and Vince (2 modern Freshmen) and I sat down and watched it. We got a kick out of it too. We realized that with the Japanese television, they worked very hard to achieve such high quality. That's why the voices and orchestra were pre-recorded and then lip synced for the video. Notice, with all the camera angles, you can't see a microphone! They made it like a movie, even though it was just for TV!
Is there a name for the brass feature at 1:30 ? I recognize it from how Bob always takes the solo in Day by Day, I'm wondering if it's an established solo from something else or if they were just quoting Bob. Or if it's just a total coincidence!
GOSH!!! They are sooooooooo good!
It's just an unbelievable find- I love it-many thanks for posting this-great quality too, especially considering the age of the recording.
Tony Rivers.
This is what great music and singing is all about, they were second to none.
AMEN !!
I've always liked these guys!!!
Wow, I just find this group...I am also now a Freshmen Fan!
Lovely, thank you Japan!
the guys that the beach boys learned their Ps and Qs from BRILLIANT harmonies, i seem to remember a number called [ how can i tell her of my love ] a song i have long been searching for, info please.
With over 21 changes in personnel, thanks to Flanigan, this group is the penultimate vocal group influencing the styles of the Beach Boys, and Barbara Moore's "Voices In Latin" and Japan's female vocal "Third Wave." This is a gem, thank you so much mharbaugh.
Penultimate means the next to last. How so???
You meant ultimate, not penultimate. Someone likes big words though.
Agreed. Like smooth butter over the listening buds.
John Hunter Phillips
Ilove the tempo of this version than most of the recorded versions I have by them. I more cha-cha-cha!
0:00 teach me tonight...2:26 it could happen to you...6:00 charade
Does anybody know what happened to "Nights Are Long"? I also wonder what album that was on, though the YT was a live appearence! Thanks.
isn't anyone going to mention that TIGHT band?
Hi Dennis. How Can I tell her was first recorded by the FF in 1955 and has been on several discs, but you may best find it on..'.Four Freshmen Capitol Collectors Series' CD, which you will find on line.
