  • A walk-through and review video for Heavyocitys percussion library Damage 2. The library is made up of multi-sampled orchestral hybrid and ethnic drums as well as processed kits and loops, it's made for Native Instruments Kontakt full and player versions.
    I received an NFR copy of the library for review purposes.

    Very useful review, not only showing how huge and big the library can sound but also the close and more intimate perspectives are well demonstrated!
    Thanks much!

    thanks for the video, very useful...
    Honestly, I prefer Damage 1, it sounds really closer, ready to be better mixed and edited for every kind of music

      thanks, glad it was helpful. If you turn down the room mics on Damage 2 and bring the stage control forward it can sound very close mic. Probably closer than Damage 1.
      Forgot to mention it in the video but something that sounded really cool was layering both libraries together.

      I used Damage 1 for many years now. When I got Damage 2 I was a bit disappointed at first to be honest. It's just not usable for industrial and synth rock tracks right out of the box anymore, you have to change a lot. After playing with it for some time I built my own snapshots and instruments from it and now it's really nice. Looking forward to make some tracks from it. Also, just as William said, using 1 and 2 together is a very nice thing. It's not better though, just different.
      A few clear drawbacks though. For example, D1 had more hihat-openness-variations, it was like six keys, including the hihat pedal. With D2 it's just three anymore, open, slightly open and closed. The old hihat is still just a better one.
      And when you change the outputs of the kit instruments from "main" to some other Kontakt output in D2 all the MasterFX are bypassed which makes it a basically unusable feature; you have to leave it on "main". That's a bit dumb which makes me question if somebody even tested this. Not the usual Heavyocity approach.
      All in all it has sick effects and sounds though, so I will use both together for all my stuff.

      @@LianExfeind that's strange that they didn't include a way to route only master fx to a multi-out. Have you checked with heavypcoty for a workaround?

    • @LianExfeind
      @LianExfeind 3 роки тому

      @@youowemeapony I did and they said it is not possible to use master FX and routing because the routing is a true bypass or so. You have to chose one.
      That's a bit sad because it effectively means that you can not use the routing, you need to use numerous instances on different tracks or different instruments within Kontakt.
      I recommend building and saving your own mini-kits with either kicks, snares and whatever you need and just put these on single tracks within your DAW.

    Hey William thank you for the review and walk-through for both libraries! Its is much appreciated :) I have a question though, in the snapshot section for each preset, there are numbers stated on the preset name itself what does that mean? Ie Armageddon 2 (17) and Big Screen Ensembles (12) on the damage 2 library.

    • @WilliamMorrisMusic
      @WilliamMorrisMusic  3 роки тому

      You're welcome. As for the numbers in the snapshots I believe they relate to how many different drums are in each patch. The ones marked as 36 are like 36 one shots spread across 3 octaves (36 notes). Others marked as 3 often have a low mid and high version of a drum in them like toms. The start of the octave will be the hit and then you get performance variations like a flam or crescendo.
      I think they've done this to keep the mapping very consistent across the whole library. It certainly plays that way, it feels quite intuitive when switching instruments.

    I have Damage 2 and I love it, but I do wish I had D1 sometimes, and may get it in the future. D1 feels a lot punchier, and cuts through a mix more, whereas D2 has a lot more of a woofy low end. However maybe lowering the room mic will help with that? I still love the detail and sound of D2 though, so good.

    • @WilliamMorrisMusic
      @WilliamMorrisMusic  3 роки тому +2

      Yeah I know what you mean. You can get D2 to sound punchier though by placing it at the front on the stage tool and knocking down the hall mics.

    How do you play these libraries? Are you just like me, just fiddling around till you get something cool, or is there actually some logic in all of this madness? (i just got my copy the other day, so still learning)

    • @WilliamMorrisMusic
      @WilliamMorrisMusic  Рік тому

      Oh very much just fiddling around until I find something that works. For percussion I usually loop the part I've played then cycle through sounds. After a while with a library I'll have certain go to sounds that I know will work and I add them into my writing template.

    Is it worth getting Damage 1 as well as Damage 2 if I don't have either of them?

    • @WilliamMorrisMusic
      @WilliamMorrisMusic  3 роки тому

      Good question, probably comes down to personal taste. D1 can layer with D2 but as they both cover the same types of drums etc I look at D2 as the upgraded D1. If I could only own one of them I'd pick D2. I also think D2 is more flexible in tone, it can go from very close/dry to full hall.

    is it woth getting if i only have 16gb ram?

    • @WilliamMorrisMusic
      @WilliamMorrisMusic  3 роки тому

      Its workable but as a lot of the ensemble patches are around 700mb you might need to use them sparingly depending on the rest of your track. With purging in kontakt as well though it's definitely workable on 16gb. If you're low on memory you can also change the instrument preload size in kontakt and get it to load less into memory, this will push your HDD more though.
