Literally this guy is a champion. My College Professor makes no sense, this guy just taught me 2 classes worth of stuff I couldn't understand in 19 minutes. Very clear concise, easy to understand. Cant thank you enough! Showing us the visual in the GUI so we can see what we are doing with each command was very helpful. The added tip of "file and directory can be used interchangeably" also really helped. I was very lost in my classes as my professor explained nothing clearly and kept saying file and directory but I was like "what is the difference?" Thank you so much!

Best tutorial I've seen of Linux commands. Just straight to the point and gives context on why the commands are the commands (which helps me remember it better). And the CLI and GUI side by side was great too. So you can actually see what you're doing. Best video yet. Gives context and straight to the point!

As a beginner, this was a very helpful video for me. I am currently in a Intro to Linux class at my college, and you provided info that wasn't in the introductory chapter of my course. The information in this video really helped me better understand how the Linux terminal and its commands work. You broke everything down so well, and made everything perfectly clear. I appreciate the fact that you tried so hard to make this clear, so it is very difficult for someone to get lost. Thanks so much!

Its always nice to go back to basics. Some of the issues I had was the "need" to jump into the deep end and learn the hard way. While there is nothing wrong with that, linux can be temperamental if you don't know what you are doing. New users who don't have a solid foundation just cargo cult their way through and eventually will cause damage to the system.
There is a difference between typing "sudo apt-get install" and knowing you are relaying that you would like elevated permissions for use of the package management to retrieve and the install something.
I've been using linux since edgy eft and the deep end approach lead to a lot of formatting, staying up all night fixing issues and kernel panic. I wish I would have taken the time to understand what I was doing and what it meant.
Long story short learning how to communicate with linux will make your user experience more enjoyable.

I have a job interview coming up on which I am expected to know some Linux. This quick video was extremely informative. Did make a little sleepy but I think that was me.
    Important commands :
pwd - print working directory (see where you are)
cd - check directory (see what you have)cd "specific folder" - go into a specific folder in directory
ls - list of everything in current directory
cd .. - go back one step to what you were working on prior
    rm - remove file
clear - clear commandscp - copy file
cd/ - return to root directory
    mkdir - make new folder
    rmdir - remove folder
man ls - provides extra information and detail for everything within the directory
man cp - provides extra information and detail about copying
everything is case sensitive in linux
folder and directory essentially mean the same thing.

My college course did not even show us the GUI and CLI side by side. I felt I was learning Linux blindly with no visuals. The course included TEST OUT and the modules each week were numerous (some even about 99 modules or assignments a week). It felt impossible to get through, yet even more impossible to memorize and understand simultaneously. This video alone taught me way more than TEST OUT ever did. I have to redo the course this upcoming term, and hopefully I will understand it much better because of you. So thank you so much, sir.

So not just Torvalds, there was Richard Stallman, Ian Murdock, Brian Fox, etc... Also the video was inconsistent about key Linux facts (namely concerning Distros)...

When you're at the beginner level "I don't know what directory means"

    • @martinkuliza
      @martinkuliza 3 роки тому +12

      Directory means "FOLDER"
a Folder is a thing in a computer in which YOU STORE FILES
You can't store files in other files
so... a DIRECTORY LOCATION is a location in your computer where you have stored a file or files
so you have your PHYSICAL C: DRIVE (Your hard drive) ok
and lets say you store a text file (.txt) called "TEST"
      it looks like this
      c:\ test
so because you have not created any folders and just thrown the text file in the hard drives MAIN LOCATION we all this the ROOT DIRECTORY
and then everything SUB to the root directory is called a SUB-DIRECTORY
so if you made a folder called "folder_1" and put the text file in it
      it would look like this
c:\folder_1 (this is the root directory level)
\test.txt (this is the second directory level)
it would be written like this
      c:\folder_1\test.txt
whenever you see a slah \ it means you are going into a folder or directory level down
so if we go 3 sub directories deep and called the next folder folder 2 it would look like this
      c:\folder_1 (Root directory level)
      \folder_2 ( 2nd Directory level)
      \test.txt (3rd directory level )
Directories are folder's simple as that

Naive question. If you can do all that using the GUI what is the benefit of using the commands then?

you may know how to write commands, but sure as hell you don't know when to write appropriate comments. It was just a beginner question to clarify something.

Also, these commands can be used universally on most Linux systems, independant of what GUI it uses. And you can use sudo to give yourself root permissions on a specific action, which you can not do in the GUI.

You created a directory/folder apparently, not a file. Use this command to create a file: touch test
Then u can use: cp test testcopy
