@@PanSaltzCaballeratos I'm trying to be strong, there are soooo many distros to vet! I had narrowed my search down to starting with the typical linux starter distro, Ubuntu, or going with Garuda Linux. Upon further review I was disappointed to find out that Ubuntu & many of its derivatives have data collection functions put in by it's corporate overlords! If I wanted my data collected, I'd just stay with Windows! So I'm leaning heavily towards Garuda at this point... I like that it makes Arch approachable to beginners since Arch or Arch-like distros are normally the final frontier for Linux users...

I've been using Linux for a week and I am totally and utterly hooked on Linux. Everything about Linux just screams quality. It's free, it's light, it's super fast. It's given my old laptop a new lease of life, Linux mint mate is brilliant. My main pc could run Windows 11 with no issues, it's now running Linux mint cinamon and I never realised how fast a pc could be it flies. I wish I would have made the switch years ago

@@Mopsie Linux is generally better for games than windows, however most games are made for windows by default and ported to Linux later. This however can be negated with the use of a virtual machine, although you often run slower. Linux is gaining more popularity due to Windows messing everything up so the compatibility issue becomes less of a concern over the years. Meanwhile some older windows programs no longer run on newer versions of windows!
Last week, I decided to ditched windows. Best decision I've ever made.
I do this 1 month and then have to go back to windows becuase some dam silly thing goes wrong and 10 hours of google and commands its still broke and I need to use my pc. Dual boot a pita
@You picked the wrong house, fool! Here's what I found, I originally used Ubuntu 16.04, a not nearly as clean version of 20.04 what it is now. Ubuntu 20.04 is very very clean and effective, unfortunately, some people will miss some basic things about linux, like root access (like administrator access) and other things like that. If you are interested in help, just reply to my comment.

I didn't ditch anything ... I have Windows, Linux and Mac computers ... they all have their strong & weak points ... when I have a computing task ahead I use the best tool for the job which varies depending on the job
I do the same. I feel each OS excels at something in particular.

I was a bit concerned about learning Linux at 76 years old but after watching this, once I get Linux and Zorin installed, I believe I can use it w/o too much interface with Linux.
I installed LInux Mint on my grandfather's old laptop a while back. He bought a new one because the old one messed up. His new one runs Windows 11 and he hates it. I managed to fix his old laptop (2011 Toshiba) and put Linux Mint on it. He prefers using the old laptop with Linux, and managed to get around it without any help. He's 85, so that's a testament as to how user-friendly Linux has become. Good to see you're doing well with Linux also!

I'm 76 as well and love technology. I'm a Mac user but someone just gave me a Lenovo that looks like an iMac. Nice machine but no longer can be updated. I want to play with it and learn Linux.

@@thesilentgeneration Thanks. I'm technically a Mac user and have three Macs but was gifted this beautiful Lenovo and will put Zorin Lite and Mint Cinnamon on a USB and see which one I like for this machine. Just learning new things and playing. I use my Mac for my regular computer.
Had an old Acer netbook. I replaced the HDD with an SSD and upgraded the RAM from 1GB to 2GB and installed Linux. Runs like a dream and I've got a few more years out of my device. I do also have a Windows machine I use from time to time.
Just curious, what will you use that computer for?

I must say, I'm a new user of linux and opted for Linux Mint; I also keep a windows 10 for booting, when needed, but the performance comparison is huge! Linux is way faster, doesn't use unnecessary resources, and uses a lot less battery power for this laptop that I have; I get about 2h + if only browsing or reading, actually a lot more...

@@MaffeyZilog By the startup already. KDE Plasma user here, even that DE gets up way faster than 10/11 ever did, even on an SSD. And the app launches and just overall performance? Second to none.
@@MichaelDustter I awlays found KDE to be slower than Cinammon or MATE.
However, on a 670 Zen 5 system now and Linux or Windows, apps and startup is pretty much instant.
(Funnily enough, I found a standard SSD to the same as a gen 4 NvME for everything. Kinda makes me wish I'd not spent so much money on a gen 4 NvME

Even though I'm an Ubuntu user (XUbuntu, actually), Linux Mint and Elementary OS are currently the top 2 most user-friendly popular Linux distros available out there.
Unless you've tried them all (and I have as a reformed 'distroholic) that's very subjective, especially as you don't seem to have strayed beyond Ubuntu variants much, if at all. The most user friendly Linux is actually MX Linux with it's MX tools putting it head and shoulders above all others, closely followed by PCLinuxOS with Linux Mint worth an honourable mention, preferably in the pure Debian (LMDE) version. And that's not just a personal opinion, I have been preaching the Linux gospel for over 20 years and have persuaded many to see the light by showing them various distros and getting them to choose which one they like best. I have 5 computers set up and I can't remember one choosing Ubuntu. Me making fake vomiting noises and screaming NO, not that one had nothing to do with it, I just let them make their own minds up in a totally unbiased way.

I’m using Windows 10 on an old hp pc, and its running very slow. I can’t imagine thinking that a webbrowser starting for a few seconds is considered slow lol
I’m running Manjaro Gnome on a 11 year old laptop, it runs great :D It’s also visually appealing with the latest extensions etc. I only upgraded the RAM to 8 gigs as I use Chrome and open lots of tabs.

Excellent video! I think you pointed out well what Linux is good for and in which case it might not be the best solution. "... they put it in the comments and tell you I'm wrong, don't listen to them! Listen to me!" 😆I liked that part! And that's exactly what people are always doing, recommending their personal favorites and try to convince you to use it. I like that you don't jump on the train but instead come with good recommendations without pushing people to it.
I would be a hypocrite if I pushed Linux on anyone. I use Windows as my main OS, because I edit video for my day job and this channel, and I actually like to get work done efficiently. If I were a basic office/email/BoomerBook user, I would probably use Lubuntu as my daily driver.

Rufus has a much higher success rate than any other ISO to USB burner I've tried.
I almost always use UUI just because it's what I've got downloaded and on hand, and it's out of habit. I've used Rufus and it's great. Whatever gets the job done!
If you're prepping a linux distro installation drive from within windows, third party tools like unnetbootin, rufus, etc are no longer even needed to do the prepping.
Now given Windows built in partitional tools are stubborn as shit. I've been using AOMEI partition assistant ( yes it's the free version I'm talking about and yes it still works like a champ) to format that install-drive as fat32, download the distro, copy and paste it directly into the fat32 drive and extract the iso file straight there into the drive. Now it's bootable and ready to install it
Works for ssd's also which makes the install process faster than a usb thumb drive.
I love Balena Etcher for live usbs
I just flash GRUB on my hard drive, create a FAT32 partition, store GRUB config and ISO there, loop the ISO in GRUB and boot it
It deletes Windows though

Thank you for this video - after putting it off for years I finally installed Linux on an old laptop! All your instructions worked fine - Rufus, installing Zorin and now it's all set up. Apart from it's not detecting the sound card or keyboard function keys (have tried several different layouts). Will keep persevering... :)

From my own personal experience a few months ago I updated a family members PC that had Windows 10 home on it, then I installed Linux Mint 18.3. They really liked the performance gain.
7:20 Actually with newer computers you may have to hold the special key down while booting up. hold the key and while holding it press power. This is a trick I had to figure out myself. You see the check for the key happens way to fast on some newer computers.
How new? Where would the 'special key' be located?

I basically cut my teeth on Windows! Back in the late 80s throughout the 90s there was nothing like Microsoft. It was very crude back in the early days but I kept hacking away and learning and soon I was very proficient at working the OS. Fast forward to the 21st century...my brother learned Linux from its inception and always talked to me about why Linux was superior over Microsoft. He always tried to get me to try out Linux mint. After having some bad experiences with the restrictions and limitations of Windows I decided to buy an older laptop and put Linux Mint 18 on it. I was pretty frustrated for the first few months with all the changes I had to learn switching from Windows. I have now been running Linux Mint on all my systems, for a multitude of reasons, simplicity is number one. I like all the ways you can customize the look and I just like the feel of not being restricted with email accounts and the like. I have been running Linux Mint since version 18. I went from 18 to 19 to 20 to 21 and now 22, 22.1 and soon 22.2! I recently ordered an ASUS Chromebox that I learned to reprogram to accept a Linux OS. I installed Linux Mint 22.1 and that little work horse has been on for several months with absolutely no crashes. One other great thing about loading Linux is that the installer gives you the option of installing a OEM install if you decide to sell a system with Linux ready for a new user. I tried Zorin 16 for a while. Just did not like it as well as Mint so I went back to my ASUS MintBox and I'm as happy as a pig in a deep mudd swallow, that's for you country boys and girls! I'll never go back to Microsoft Windows. When you don't have walls and fences, you don't need Windows and Gates! With FREEDOM comes ELEGANCE!
i checked lots of videos to learn what are linux distros and how to choose one and then of the 2 options of LinuxMint and PopOs is chose pop and then installed that as a dualboot. dont know much about linux but planning to learn the terminal and all that. havent started gaming on it yet but first have to learn the terminal things..
there is simply too much to do but i hope it will be as good as others say it was and is..

I have watched this video and your one on installing Linux on a Chromebook, both have been really informative. I plan to install a distro on an old Chromebook with 16Gb storage and 2Gb RAM. What would you recommend. I like the look of Mint Xfce but would Gallium or Zorin be a better option for a low spec machine?
If it's a Chromebook, I would recommend Gallium as long as there's a hardware specific build for your model of Chromebook. Gallium is optimized specifically for Chromebooks. I tried Lubuntu on this Chromebook at first, and I generally love Lubuntu, but on this particular machine, Gallium blew its doors off.

My question is that, my computer I want to install Linux to is quite old and has Microsoft office (biz version) and doesn't connect/recognize wifi, but only LAN. After installing Linux, would the new system recognize wifi, so that I'd be able to connect to the internet and download additional programs? Thanks for your help!
It sort of depends; if the wifi on the laptop has gone bad, then it won't work on either OS. If there isn't an available driver for Linux, it won't work, either.
I would give it a shot, and see what happens, and if it doesn't work you can pick up a cheap wifi adapter that will work with Linux to get around that problem. amzn.to/3g5RiPD

Jumped onto a dual boot with Ubuntu on my Windows machine to program after leaving my job and turning in their Macbook pro and love it. I just wanted to test it out to see if I liked it, and turned out to save me at least 1,500 on buying a Macbook pro

Thanks for a truly useful & instructive tutorial. I am an aging tech - first pc was a Tandy TRS80! Followed by an endless stream of Windows systems fom win93, 98, 2000, xp etc through to win10. Zorin give me the chance to avoid win11. I followed your instructions & nothing went wrong!! Everything went just as you described. May the sun always shine on you!!

I’m using elementary os just getting started with Linux but I will tell you this it’s way better system than windows 10 much faster and does not have the bloatware slowing you down when trying to complete your task and my notebook hp is only 3 years old I see a big improvement in it potential now with Linux

I've been using Linux Mint for years now. I've had Linux as my preferred OS on workstations in my Internet cafe. I used free cafe manager for Linux. I have also used SME Server.
It has been brought to my attention that Manjaro Linux is a very easy distro for new users. I can't speak on this, because I haven't tried it out for myself (I will try it at some point, and I will upload a video review on that in the future). The distro you choose doesn't really matter, the steps laid out in this video are the same regardless; just replace the ZorinOS .iso with the .iso of your choice.
This guide should be considered fairly universal! :)
Some would say not as stable as Ubuntu or Debian because it's almost bleeding edge, but I've had no problems with it. It will come with the far better version of Firefox at this moment in time as well.
I believe Arch has objectively the best package manager. Luke Smith was just recommending Manjaro and I'm using it now on my main OS, it just works better because every obscure program on the bleeding edge of Linux land can be installed with the click of one button. Have an old AMD card that needs GCN 1.0 support in the driver to work fully, just flick that switch. Want to install some dudes random github project but don't have the time to compile it yourself, just flick that switch.
I've got Kubuntu on one PC and Manjaro KDE on another. I constantly gravitate towards the Manjaro one and I'm almost a complete newbie.
Do you recommend Fedora for beginners? I have heard good opinions of that distribution.

If you care about privacy, install literally any distro other than Ubuntu.
Many of us don't have any favourite distro and will gladly help novices. (See r/linuxquestions, r/linux4noobs).
I've heard that recently. I recommended 'Buntu based distros because it's what I know and can instruct new users about, but I'll be testing other distros in the future and I will do videos about them if I find something that is more newbie friendly. Manjaro will be first on my list. Regardless of what distro anyone chooses, the installation process outlined in this video should be mostly the same.
@@LowDoughTech Yes, you are right about recommending people based on what you know. Personally, I recommend Pop OS (Ubuntu based) for newbies and Manjaro for intermediates.
Yes the installation process will be the same on most distros, except for Fedora which on automatic partitioning, partitions the HDD a little bit differently to other distros, although I guess that won't be much of an issue.
I'll do a video on POP OS at some point, too.

David I like Linux Mint. As you say its choice. Mint remove the privacy tracking that Ubuntu has. However Ubuntu tracking is nothing like Windows 10. There is some really good video editing software for Linux. Installing Linux is very easy. When you get to install now click and wait until the operating system tells you to remove the installation media. Linux is more secure than Windows by design. Windows can be made more secure by creating guest accounts that are not admin level and operating Windows as a guest. Linux comes that way so the user does not have to set that up. Linux allows almost everything to be changed. You can really make the desktop look and feel how you want it to be and lots lots more. I find Microsoft are following Linux not Linux following Microsoft. For example the Windows Store. Linux have had this for years. Finally in Linux everything is organized. Games are automatically installed into a Games folder. Office software into an office folder. Internet software into an internet folder. The menu layout is far more logical than Windows. Thank you for you video on Zorin.
I have to say, Zorin do a very polished version of XFCE.
I tried Zorin Core but it was very lagging so I tried Zorin Lite but it looked too Windows XP. The lag could be a driver issue though. Ive heard AMD chipsets can be fussy with Linux.
I used Manjaro KDE for some time and switched back to windows 10 cause i got a GPU for games, and ohh boy,i never regretted something more in my life, i didnt even use w10 for full 14days before coming back to Manjaro KDE! Couldn't be happier, and most games do work!
I have never gotten a virus on Linux... My grandpa was running Mint for less than a month and he managed to get one and it freakin infected the entire system. I had to manually recompile the entire distro. I ended up doing my own custom OS flavor known as "Chocolate Mint" which is just a basic system that is based closely off of Debian 5.1. I ended up having to update it and do a slight modification and use the Mint desktop environment in it. I quickly locked it fully down and make it hell for him to download anything.

I woke up one morning to find my Acer laptop updated to windows 11. I had a lot of my schooling data on it, so I kept it on the machine, but duel booted with Ubuntu for daily driving. I've been slowly migrating my school and work environments to Ubuntu.

thanks for the guide, I have an old hp stream laptop that has just been sitting around collecting dust and now it is actually usable! My main reason for switching over to a linux distro is because my main drive is only 32 gb which is no longer reasonably large enough, (or ever) large enough for windows. It's sad that Hp would sell e-waste like this, but I seem to have saved this pc from that fate, at least for ahwile.

I have a perfectly fine Samsung laptop that would not boot anymore. Took the drive out and made external to keep my files. I want to use it for the BluRay burner it has and watching old DVDs etc for the kids. What new Hard Drive would you replace with and setup Linux on? I want to learn Linux. Also, what size USB stick do I need, or can I burn this to a DVD?
I have a Chromebook but included is a Linux option? I'm afraid to try it. I don't want to type commands all the time. At least not yet. It's a learning curve. What do you suggest?
HI - REALLY frustrated at the ubuntu I just installed on a Win 7 Pro machine that the drive failed 4 months after MS pulled support so when I booted up the new drive with the recovery discs there were no updates and it ran like crap. Been watching video after video about using ubuntu and I'll disagree on the help. Ubuntu forum I apparently asked a question in a wrong area and got jumped on for my newbie error.
With the ubuntu on this drive do I have to do the complete USB stick to load the Zorin OS... Your video makes it look a lot friendlier to someone who cut their teeth on DR-Dos. Thanks
I am like you a techie with about 50 years of experience. I liked your video as you kept it simple and to the point of installation. One of the issues during an install is UEFI versus a Legacy install. If you happen to be in Legacy mode it is not quite as easy to get it working or that is what I am seeing from a developer who is knowledgeable (?) or so you would think. I am thinking about doing a video for a Legacy install and why it fails upon boot. Thank you for your excellent video. I have been playing with Linux since 1990.
Does this just save all all the programs in my PC ? and or does it pick them up with out Reformatting?

Zorin OS is my fave at the moment. Installed it on both my parents computers as the computers are getting on. So similar to windows they just understand it

@@FredrickTheDog I personally have only used the regular version and never had any problems as it runs so well even on older or low end hardware. Much much smoother than windows

Hi I have followed the instructions and can run it from USb but when I try to install I get the error message "no root file system is defined please correct from the partitioning menu" .
There are no other OS on the pc and the hard drive was cleared with DBAN
I have no familiarity with UBUNTU etc is there anything I can do simply? Sorry for maybe asking a silly question. Thanks Roy
I switched to Linux in 2015 as dual boot with Windows by 2015 I reformatted my Windows drive to be additional storage for my Linux system and have not regretted it since. I do video and audio editing for work, some data recovery, Desktop support, play games, and any/everything else I can dream up. Since switching to Linux I have also found that I if I try to run Windows on my machine I end up reinstalling it do to issues with the OS about once a month. Where Linux just works, gets out of my way, and leave my hardware to do the tasks that I think are important instead of running junk in the background.

@@eyeoftruth4405 is your question about how to keep your Windows 10? If so you will need to shrink the largest disk partition on Windows 10. I recommend by about half unless you know which one you'll use more then make sure the smaller one is at least 60GB. Then follow his instructions but chose something else. I've found that Linux Mint was the easiest when I was first starting to set up dual boot.
When you get to the screen that asks you what disk you want to use a lot of the distributions will have an option to "Install alongside Windows" or whatever other OS you may have installed. This is the easiest option if you do not want to mess with partition tables.
What about microsoft office, which linux version that work with to work with my old microsoft office documents?
