I checked this out to see a train wreck but you're right on the money with this especially the "Weed and Grass Killer" disasterpiece thing. Good content and information for homeowners.
@brad munger Don't know if you have your answer, but the pre-emergent only works to prevent seeds from emerging (maybe the name makes more sense) - dandelion and other from seed weeds. You should spot spray for weeds here and there or, as I used to call it, blanket spray (like the hose end bottle) with a "post-emergent" spray if you have a field of dandelions. ****But if you have reseeded or over-seeded, make certain to read the label. Spraying new emerging grass seedlings with selective post emergent herbicide can stress your new seeds and wipe them out even though it's not labeled to do that.
We also have a bunch of dandelions, but we keep them because they are kinda like herbs. The heads are good for sirup, the leaves can go to salads and on food as a garnish, and the roots are good for making tea. 😍

For Pacific Northwesterners, I've used 3 of the products shown in this video, on a lawn that is primarily tall fescue with some ryegrass and kentucky blue blended in (multiple varieties of each). I've had best results with the Spectracide product (quickest and most effective weed killing with least damage to grass). The difference between the three was fairly minor, to be honest, but enough to notice. Just putting it out there in case you're making a decision about which to go with.

Thanks Ryan. I have a mess of dandelions due to a 4 year drought that we have had here. But we did just get 3" of rain in a little over a week so things are looking up!
Don't like spraying any chemicals as a dog owner. Makes me crazy when I see neighbors' with young kids spraying weed killer on lawns. What about vinegar mix? Works great on crabgrass. Great channel.
I've done that mistake before, to make matters worse I used the concentrate but didn't know I have to mix it. No weeds are growing in some of this areas neither is grass. I have come a long way since then thanks to your videos.
It would be helpful to include information on whether these products contain neonicotniods and glyphosate which may be destructive to bee populations. Bees and other pollinators are integral to production of most fruits, vegetables, nuts and ornamental flowers.
He specifically discusses glyphosate and making sure it is not in the product you purchase. Neonicotinoids are an insecticide. There would be little benefit to including an insecticide in a selective herbicide that is most likely going to be used to spot spray. The most important lesson from this video is to read labels and make sure it is right for you and your lawn.
Important: I would also strongly suggest that you pluck or remove any dandelion heads that you see before spraying as they will go to seed before dying and your problem will start all over again next year. This is the one thing that nobody talks about but it is critical if you want a dandelion free yard year after year.
I just got some of that Tzone to try and finally get rid of the creeping Charlie in my yard. Haven’t had much luck but hoping this will finally do the trick.
So true. I noticed that yesterday while looking at Roundup. I was looking at some of the weed killers and the combo stuff weed/grass killers are in the same location. That would be so frustrating to make that mistake.
Hello. I recently subscribed to your channel because of your experience lawn maintenance. Currently I have been working overload trying to improve my grass. I find myself purchasing grass seeds of various types which is a big NO and I wasn’t aware as a beginner the importance of stabilizing one type of grass. On March 16th, I removed the bulk of weeds from my lawn by hand and purchased again the Scotts Thick Lawn product. The next day I spread the seed mixture only to see no germination to date. I believe it’s due to the cool climate. I really wound like to learn the proper way to seed as well as prepare the lawn for various seasons.
I have a moss problem in Washington state. I raked most of it up in the heavy spots and poked nice holes in it to put down a all in one product fertilizer, seeds, and something else. Hoping the grass will take over but haven’t seen anything really yet in 2 weeks.
It would also be interesting to cover the fertilizers that have weed killer mixed in and how effective it actually is and the pros and cons of doing that with fertilizer.
After following your tips I stumbled into a problem... my yard has been overrun with ant hills. I'm calling it off for this season and hopefully I can start up in the fall. You will help me and plenty other's. Stay safe #lawngoals
Hi there! I know this is an older video. Moved into a new place and learning all about lawn care as we go. Currently dealing with the dandelions and for the most part I can rip them out by hand but some of the roots are very deep. My question is - after I spot spray will the grass grow over? Should I be sprinkling anything on top to help the grass grow healthier? Any helpful videos I’d greatly appreciate being pointed to 😊
Hi Ryan, I'm binge-watching your videos to try to renovate my lawn. I bought my house over a year ago and the lawn was neglected before me and I've just been mowing and weeding by hand. I'm going to try overseeding soon as an experiment, but I'll be more prepared this fall. My question is: Can I use an ester-based product like Tenacity or the one you showed before or after I seed? (I'm in western PA, so I have similar conditions as you.) I have a lot of dandelions and "creeping Charlie," and a growing amount of crab grass. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Did you drive your purple Dodge Challenger through Polk City on Saturday around 3:55 PM? It's an odd experience to see a random video online and then 2 weeks later, see you drive past in person. Very identifiable. Great videos!
Great Green North Lawn Care actually dandelions are a tasty salad. You can eat the whole thing. Olive oil, salt pepper is all you need. But I would buy them from my health food grocery not pick them from the farm in my back yard 😂
Hey Ryan, I have followed you a few years now, everything is working great with one exception... I have LOTS of bunch grass, and i can tell its getting worse every spring. Do you have a video on that?
I always used Trimec, or homemade Trimec (2-4-D & Banvel or Clarity). Sometimes the broadleaf coverage could be enhanced if necessary to fight a strong stand, by adding a bit more Banvel or Clarity. That was our bulk purchase plan on our sod farm.
One thing I've learned over the years I switch how I mow based on what im trying to achieve. If I like the way my yard looks I will mulch, but if im trying to get rid of weeds, dandelions and clover in particular I bag
My goodness you lawn looks like an oasis in the desert!! I went online and bought some of the Ryan Knorr soil loosener.. my lawn looks good now and my neighborhood has an informal lawn competition. My biggest problem is summer heat I water manually. I went on vacation last year for two weeks came back an was never able to get the lawn back. I want to win the competition this year. 😂😂
Thank you for your videos. Because of the current health crisis I've had to be on top of my own lawn progress. Our hired lawn maintenance company is operating at limited capacity. I've watched many of your videos and before this video I watched your video on Tenacity herbicide. I just bought it before you posted this video. Is there a difference between this method and using Tenacity? I know Tenacity is a higher grade. Thanks for your help in advance.
Remember that dandelions are serving a purpose for your soil. Now, that doesn’t mean that you need to leave them (I do so long as they aren’t so bad) but if you understand the purpose it can help manage them better. First, dandelions de-compact soil. Second, they pull deep soil nutrients up, specifically calcium. There are other benefits, but if you can keep that in mind, and of course, keep the lawn thick, you can reduce your dependence on herbicide products.
I don't understand why this type of logic always comes up on videos like these. It's his lawn and he's decided he doesn't like how they look. None of those benefits are significant enough to be a counterpoint.
@@ryeguy01 no counterpoint was made, no argument was presented and in no way did I suggest that they should be left alone. I merely presented a factual addendum to the topic at hand. If you don’t find value in that, no problem, we all have different philosophies and best practices.
@@Rancorous_Redwood That is the one thing you do not ever see with stars in these videos, testing their soils for herbicide carry-over. A simple bioassay is all that is needed. Setup a small grain or bean planting from their herbicide treated soil to a control soil that has never seen herbicide. They might be surprised. The dicamba (acid), a product used and suggested in this video, is moderately toxic to birds. Being spring and people bringing out their bird feeders, don't be spraying this stuff near the feeders.
@Anna Aziccy Yep, considered a delicacy by the Italian community here in Aus. They boil the broad leaf and on day 1 drink the broth, day 2 they eat the broad leaf with an egg and garlic. Apparently the broth is really good for indigestion. Me...not so much, thanks.
I've used the Weed Beater product on your recommendation and it has worked quite well. I am curious Ryan what you do with any unused mixed product in your sprayer. It's a good problem to have ... not enough weeds ... but of course we want to be responsible about disposing of any left over. First time using it this spring I added some extra water to the sprayer after I was done, grabbed a couple of empty soda bottles, filled those until the sprayer was empty and dropped them off at our local hazardous waste disposal site. You appear to be quite deliberate and thorough so I was curious if you had different or better strategy in general for dealing with leftover spray.
I do enjoy some of your videos, but keep in mind that dandelions are extremely important, as they're one of the first flowering plants in many regions. These first flowers are very important to pollinators. I don't mind my dandelions. Also, I'd love to hear your opinion about the products that you put in your soil and then makes its way into the water system (the creek behind your home is a GREAT example).
Sorry If I asked this before somewhere but, with a weed killer like these, how soon can you seed or overseed new lawns. all the online details or specs don't specify if you can use it while seeding or how long I would need to wait before putting seed down and covering it with a blanket. Thanks for all you've done to keep us informed. I really am in a pickel becasue of the half acre that's on a steep hill that's been plagued with weeds and dandilions of all sorts, I'm really hoping I can get something down before the heat really sets in for me in New Hampshire.
I sure am hoping that you have an answer for me on how to get rid of Orchard Grass. It started to be an issue in the last 2 yrs. Prior to that, I had not seen it. I am in Tennessee about 50 miles due west of Knoxville.
For manually pulling dandelions (and other tap root weeds): first, get them as early as possible - the longer you wait, the deeper the tap root goes. Second, the trick is to loosen the soil around the tap root as much as possible. You can use almost anything to do this, from a Hori knife to a screwdriver, to even a butter knife (yes). Drive your tool of choice straight down (repeat - straight down) into the soil, about 1-2" away from the center of the plant, and to a depth of at least 4" (6" is even better), then pry the handle of the tool toward (repeat - toward) the center of the weed. This will push the blade end away from the root, effectively loosening the soil without risking damaging the tap root. Third, repeat this until you have worked your way in a full circle around the weed. Fourth, drive your fingers down 1-2" into the soil, using the holes you just made, and grasp the tap root itself below the top of the soil. Don't squeeze too hard and slowly (repeat - slowly) pull the tap root out. Once you have it all out, knock as much soil off as possible into/around the hole you just made. Congratulations, that weed is history and you just aerated a tiny section of your lawn. Note: if you don't get the entirety of the tap root, don't worry, just make a mental note. It will take a long time for that weed to grow back, but when it does, remember that you need to go deeper next time with the tool.
100K, very cool, and very well deserved. Even the guys that make mowers need some help with their lawns and this is a stellar source for that :) Now how about a video about getting rid of torpedo grass in flower beds, asking for a friend Enjoy the Mow!
Ryan, on my lawn renovation (reseeeded in fall) I over did it with tenacity when i did the 2nd spray (2 weeks after the first) i must have mixed a little too much and now i have patches of my tall fescue that are white. if the grass is just white and not brown, it should come back right? (maybe stunting it isnt too bad because i did an overseed at the same time). some of the grass has some light green at the base but some of the grass is mostly white.... sad too because my lawn was looking great!
I ended up getting some T zone and that stuff destroys weeds within a few days. It's probably similar to what you used because it's ester based as well. Weed B gone can take awhile or may need a second application in my experience even with dandelions.
Hi Ryan. Another great video. I don't have a dandy problem for the most part, but I'll use the info when needed. In my back yard, which gets limited sun once the leaves form on my maples, I suddenly have 2 large patches of what I think is bentgrass. It's very bright green currently while the rest of the yard is still greening up. I noticed it last year but it has doubled in size. (I'm in Madison, WI not too far from you). I've thought about just shaving it up; a new partial lawn could be my summer challenge. What would you do? Kill it all with Round Up or scoop it and bring in some new soil? What blend of seed would you use? That area only gets a few hours of sun per day when the Maples are full with leaves. Thank you!
Best tool by far to physically and effortlessly remove dandelions is the Fiskars Stand-up Weeder. This thing works like a charm and pulls the dandelion - taproot and all!
I'm pulling the flowers when they're yellow before they spore. Spot spraying with %100 vinegar. Popping them out with that stand up weeder thing that you step on. We'll see if that works?
The first thing you want to do before any spraying is to go out and pull off as may seed heads as possible. Even the tightest of them that haven't opened yet. It is essential. Crucial. Imperative. Each dandilion seed head has between 54 and 172 seeds per head. While it likely would be better for them to open and allow bees and the like to polinate them naturally it is not ecessary for them to do so. Dandilions and their heads don't need to open to produce viable seeds because much of the time they self polinate. All those sprays do is kill green growing parts of a plant. Much of the time they kill plants by accelerating their growth. Removing seed heads will force a dandilion to put its' energy into vegatative production and help it die off. The seeds are NOT green and or growing. They live dormantly through most sprays. In fact I think seed production is assisted by sprays although I've no scentfic background to prove that. Why do I always have dandilons after having a spray company for the last 5 years? They left seeds heads on. The hundred dandlions that were on your lawn each with 54-172 seeds had the potential to become 5400-17,200 plants. 100%, before any spraying of any plant go out and remove any and all seed heads or don't bother.
Three weeks ago I used Weed Bgone and didn't get rid of weeds but it sure damaged my Japanese Maple tree. Going to use Weed Zone Free this week because it was recommended by my local seed supply store.
Hey Ryan, you know I’m a fan, but there are some gotchas to watch out for with these products. If you use any of them you need to keep those grass clippings out of your garden for several weeks after, and maybe longer. Also, in hot weather, these products and especially ester based products will drift, killing flowers and vegetables even in a neighboring yard! Believe me, I’ve seen it happen. I’m not saying not to use them, but use them wisely.
I just reseeded my lawn yesterday and applied a starter fertilizer with mesotrine in it. I’m sure in a month or two weeds are going to be growing in with the new grass. So what would be the next step in fertilizers to put? I don’t want to put something and kill off the new grass.
Here in Alberta, we can buy something called Killex. It only works on broad-leaf weeds and i use it to spot kill dandelions. Very effective. Can't remember what the active ingredient is but is probably the same as one or more of the ones you showed us.
My large side yard is 1/5 dandelions. I sprayed with the type that attached to the hose. They wilted well. I plan on buying the Greenworks dethatcher. Should I just reseed then to help new grass grown where all the dandelions are. They had the long stems when when I mowed seemed to just lay over. they all didn't get cut well.
Thanks for watching! If you're looking for products or the guide I mentioned in the video, all links are in the description.

Makes me crazy when I see irresponsible dog owners letting their dogs bark all the time and pee and poop on neighbors lawns.
I've done that mistake before, to make matters worse I used the concentrate but didn't know I have to mix it. No weeds are growing in some of this areas neither is grass. I have come a long way since then thanks to your videos.
I'd have an awesome looking lawn if all grass grew as well and as resilient as the grass that continually pops up in my garden beds.
The garden is the perfect bedding for plants, that's why! Much nicer to grow in than some compacted clay or the dead and dusty spots in the yard lol
tea spoon of table salt over the dandelion. make sure doesn't rain for a few days after. An old lady told me that and is great
Thanks for the tip! I'll have to try that!
Thank you TN, I stand corrected. Thank you for both corrections.
Nothing has come back in my yard
Ryan Knorr Lawn Care I read autumn is better to spray it but I’m going to try the spring and then again in the fall if I don’t get it all.
So true. I noticed that yesterday while looking at Roundup. I was looking at some of the weed killers and the combo stuff weed/grass killers are in the same location. That would be so frustrating to make that mistake.
Never use Roundup or any product containing glyphosate on your lawn. Unless, you want to kill your grass.
Stay tuned as I talk about tons of topics throughout the year
I'm pretty impressed with how the project lawn looks!
The worst part about dandelions is they will adapt to being low mowed, and just flower closer to the ground.
But also good and exiting for kids

I have a moss problem in Washington state. I raked most of it up in the heavy spots and poked nice holes in it to put down a all in one product fertilizer, seeds, and something else. Hoping the grass will take over but haven’t seen anything really yet in 2 weeks.
Might be a little cold yet

I was just thinking the same thing 😄
Nope, the real reason they hate him is 0.30 lol
It would also be interesting to cover the fertilizers that have weed killer mixed in and how effective it actually is and the pros and cons of doing that with fertilizer.
After following your tips I stumbled into a problem... my yard has been overrun with ant hills. I'm calling it off for this season and hopefully I can start up in the fall. You will help me and plenty other's. Stay safe #lawngoals

Super helpful video. This guys lawn looks A1! Easy to trust.
Any dandelions you dont want just send my way!!! Love when neighbours weed and give me the goods my ducks do as well
Did you drive your purple Dodge Challenger through Polk City on Saturday around 3:55 PM? It's an odd experience to see a random video online and then 2 weeks later, see you drive past in person. Very identifiable. Great videos!
Appreciate the content especially over the weekend!!
I work 7 days a week :)
0:17 “dandelion farms” so true!
Great Green North Lawn Care
actually dandelions are a tasty salad.
I’ve had a couple Dandelions but more clover. I bought some Roundup weed killer that won’t hurt the grass. Also bought some Speedzone to try.
Speedzone should do it...the concentrate I used here zaps clover really well
One thing I've learned over the years I switch how I mow based on what im trying to achieve. If I like the way my yard looks I will mulch, but if im trying to get rid of weeds, dandelions and clover in particular I bag
Always great content brother. Great information and CONGRATULATIONS ON 100K !!! 🎉🎊 🍾
Thanks!
Thanks for the video and tips! It’s a constant battle for me because we are practically surrounded by dandelion farms in our neighborhood lol
Hey Ryan can you do a video on mowing height for the best grass, how to adjust and level a push behind mower ....! Thanks
I love the overhead shots of your lawn and your project lawns. You put your neighbors to shame!
Your lawn is beautiful... and we can tell which neighbor is jealous hahaha
Thanks for the video. Do you have a video on how to fix the damaged spots if you didn't use one of those selected weed killers?
Another very informative video. Have you done anything on Poa Annua?
What about vinager on weeds and dandelions
Dandelions are good eating ! . Just don’t eat them where all chemicals are being sprayed used
@@Rancorous_Redwood That is the one thing you do not ever see with stars in these videos, testing their soils for herbicide carry-over.
I use a hollow tine to pull them out .im gonna try roundup gel on a finger with a latex glove on
You should get yourself some speed zone. It workes really great even if you split apps.
Each product should have something on the label about seeding but generally it's 3-4 weeks after spraying
@@ryanknorrlawncare that's great, thank you I'll be sure to check the label! You're doing a great job!
Even the guys that make mowers need some help with their lawns and this is a stellar source for that :)
Now how about a video about getting rid of torpedo grass in flower beds, asking for a friend
Enjoy the Mow!
It will absolutely come back. Temporary bleaching for fescue is a common side effect.
@0:50 haha I was just outside last night using that exact tool to take out the dozen or so dandys that popped up in this warmer weather
Gorgeous lawn!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I ended up getting some T zone and that stuff destroys weeds within a few days. It's probably similar to what you used because it's ester based as well. Weed B gone can take awhile or may need a second application in my experience even with dandelions.
T-zone is what i use. I live in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. Does an amazing job.
congrats on recently hitting 100K subs! A huge accomplishment!! I'm honored to be one of them!
Thank you!
Soon as you spot one deal with it immediately they spread like wildfire.
Best tool by far to physically and effortlessly remove dandelions is the Fiskars Stand-up Weeder. This thing works like a charm and pulls the dandelion - taproot and all!
what are your thoughts on buffalo grass?
I love to grow them yellow flowers beautiful
I'm pulling the flowers when they're yellow before they spore. Spot spraying with %100 vinegar. Popping them out with that stand up weeder thing that you step on. We'll see if that works?
Last year I opened the front door and there were dandelions with no tops. We had a lot of rabbits show up which explained what happened.
Trimec 992 in a backpack sprayer. One and done
Can these products be used after I top dressed and seeded a few weeks ago?
the fiskars weed puller is great
Calcium levels must be really low in that area. Great video Ryan.
Actually my level is a little high and the soil around is very similar.
Did them up by the roots, let dry and give to cancer patients needing and wanting them as they are to weak to do so.
First Aussie 😁. Great easy to understand video Ryan.😎👍👍
another exciting video!!, I pull them using the same tool you have, once you have a few ones.
Jesus your lawn is so green compared to the neighbors! FLEX!!!
I used Speed Zone. Knocked them all out first application. A great product.
Yeah very similar to the concentrate I was using..good stuff
Three weeks ago I used Weed Bgone and didn't get rid of weeds but it sure damaged my Japanese Maple tree. Going to use Weed Zone Free this week because it was recommended by my local seed supply store.
I like nature happening on my lawn.
Good reminders for sure.
Thanks Ryan...Good one!!!
I like having dandelion’s and some time’s I try to pull them out from other places and I know that there roots are fast growers
