  • LEARN TO PLAY NASHVILLE-STYLE GUITAR WITH LEGENDARY SESSION PLAYER, BRENT MASON: prf.hn/l/KjLZBoO
    This clip was shot in the rehearsal hall known as Soundcheck here in Nashville in June, 2005. Five years later, Soundcheck was flooded.
    In this video I talk to Brent Mason. Brent is one of the most in demand session guitarists in Nashville. He's played on so many hit records from the 80's and 90's and even to this day.
    Brent talks about some of his gear and guitars including his favorite amps and guitars that he has used in sessions.

    Brent is a good friend of mine and one of the nicest guys you'll ever hope to meet!!! He was kind enough to give me a PRS Brent Mason model which is my Number One!! Him and his family would have me over for Thanksgiving every year which I looked forward too!! Since I had to live Nashville I really miss him, his brother Randy (an amazing musician in his own right!) and his wonderful parents Arlene and Doyt!!! Hope I can get back to visit soon!!! Did I mention Brent is the best guitar picker you'll ever hear??

    How can we not enjoy interviews like this ? I was always interested in the musicians who played on the sessions, it was the first thing I looked for and it was disappointing when an LP didn't have the list of musicians.

      I agree. Played one yrs ago in a studio in Atlanta, making a demo. My guitar kept cutting out, I was getting frustrated. The OLD man working the board, said "Well, we have an old one in the back. Like to try it?" I said yes. He brought out an OLD Butterscotch Tele, with a U (huge) neck, literally blew the dust off. Tuned it up, that guitar rang like a bell! I'd always liked them, as Muddy Waters played one, James Burton, etc., but didn't want one just because those guys had one. After playing that old Tele, I understood why so many great guitarist had them. It took 10 yrs, but in 1995, I could afford a used one. Bought a 1992, plus a decent little Peavey amp (yes I was suprised too.), plus the case for a grand! It's a great guitar. In 2004 put a 4 Way Tele Mod Switch, on, it gave me the usual 3 selections, plus both pickups wired in Series.(gave it a little bite), then in 2015 put the 5 Way Super Switch, on it. It gave me the regular 3 selections,plus both in Series,plus both 1/2 out of phase.(I have TBX so only 1/2 out of phase. Teles without TBX get Both 100% out of phase.) I love how easy & fast the neck is, it's pure butter! Wouldn't take $4K, for it. It's been through earthquakes,tornadoes, being dropped, dragged across country,brass statues falling on it, plus my grandkids inquisitive minds. It still holds it tune, perfectly intonated,etc. Leo Fender got it right the first time. They can handle any genre. (Sorry I went on so long, but there's nothing like a Telecaster.)

    He played one of the greatest solos on Doug jernigan album, on the song, 'one note samba'.
    If anyone has that record, they should put that up. Really great soul out of this guy.

    Brent, one of the more well known musicians in the industry but a good testament to those young up and coming musicians that being a successful musician doesnt always mean having your name in lights and achieving super star status with a mansion, a fleet of sports cars and women hanging on each arm... In fact the large majority of successful musicians are not well known at all and are making a good living doing what they love..
    So, you youngsters pay attention.. You could work in a factory, busting your knuckles and taking flack from a supervisor who hates life for 30 years or you can do what you love,, if you work for it.. Brent and many others are living proof.. Success isnt measured by your bank account,,, Its measured by happiness and how many people you influence in a positive way..

    PRS's, EVH's and many many others are great guitars but I have also been drawn to the more traditional stuff. I related when be said he liked Gretch, tele's, strats and Les Pauls. Infact when I look at a headstock on one that says something different I loose interest. Except for Epi's and some Squiers. Just me though. Great interview Joe. 👍🏻😎

    Thanks Joe. Another great interview. I'm always a bit jealous when people have 30+ guitars, don't get me wrong, if I'd kept all the guitars I ever owned, including the $5 Egmunds(that was the new price at the old Woolco),& Japanese electrics, etc. I'd probably have over 100, yet no where to keep them. I've only got 3 now, plus an $85 bass, & still have no place to keep them. Any way great little snippet, he's a modest guy too, I like that. (By the way my name is Gil [like a fish has😉) Be good, if you can't do that, be careful.

      The reason Fender called it the Nashville Telecaster was because quite a few people in the country music industry had similar setups on their Teles. Fender introduced their Nashville Tele Nashville Tele model in the early 90s, and it has gone through quite a few changes between the early models and the current ones. They even offered them with B-benders for a few years, and there was another model called the Nashville Power Tele that had a piezo pickup in the bridge for “acoustic” tones in addition to the two regular Tele neck and bridge pickups and the Strat middle pickup.

    1:12 why is the saddle on the B string adjusted so far forward ? what's with the B string saddle ?

    • @MusiciansHallofFameMuseum
      @MusiciansHallofFameMuseum  3 роки тому

      Peanuts…. It’s a number of factors one being the circumference of the string and how far the action is above the 12th fret before it will note. Everything starts over at the 12th fret or the double dots. The bridge saddles allow you to set the intonation.( tune the guitar both above and below the 12th fret) This means if you hit the E string open and the closed on the 13th fret it will sound the same except a octove higher. Best… Joe
