  • The CZ Shadow SP-01 was the mid-price favorite for IPSC for a good long time, but now there's the upgraded Shadow 2. Which should you buy and what are the differences?

Awesome video, thanks for putting it out there.
    Few thoughts:
-Sh 1 or Sh 2 stock triggers, once you shoot either of these babies, you fall in love. Some take-up, yes, but crystal clear break.
-sight picture on both (but especially the Sh1 due to larger Novak rear) is simply awesome with stock sights
-longer thumbs resting on safety may also touch the slide release, causing slide to not lock back after last shot
-drastically thinner grips on Sh 2, but endless options for both Sh 1 and Sh 2 from LOK (shameless plug as I love their grips)
-pricing argument is valid when talking about the black Sh 1, but not with that sweet dual tone one in the video (which is closer to 1000 CDN, sometimes more, which is getting closer to the Sh 2)
-I have the Sh 1, I prefer the feel and overall awesomeness of the Sh 2 by a hair, both great guns
-both guns will retain their value for resale, especially the hard to get Sh 2 on the used market

I really enjoyed your video. Very informative. You nailed most important subjects right. Thank you. As far as my judgements goes - I own Shadow 1 - I like it but there is something in me demanding more from my primary competition pistol. And today I had chance to shoot my friend's Shadow 2. For me the difference is there and quite significant. Although Shadow 1 is really decent pistol Shadow 2 in my hands just performs better, with softer and shorter trigger pull, better grip ergonomics and softer recoil. I've just hit the SUBSCRIBE button :)

I had an SP-01 Tactical Urban Grey, and I thought that was decently light all things considered. To be flinging a Glock 17 or most other polymer pistols is like swinging around a 2x2 block of carbon fiber. The Shadow 2 is probably one of the first pistols I've ever held in my entire life that actually felt "weighty". I'd say it's like shaking the hand of god! I love the weight because it.. just feels good, y'know? Other than that, the sights are absolutely *the best* I've ever seen in all my life other than red dots but those have other funny things with them for me. The texturing is also the most aggressive I've felt, and I love it! Definitely an improvement over my old SP-01 Urban Grey, but I wouldn't call the other one bad at all either. I just love the thin aluminum grips because thinner = better for my hands. The undercut of the trigger guard as well as the trigger guard itself being larger is also appreciated. The texturing of the slide is also something I MUCH prefer on the Shadow 2, it doesn't cut my hand as much as the SP-01. Not that the old one actually made me lose much flesh, but I thought it was worth mentioning. But if there's one thing I prefer on the Shadow 2 more than basically every single other firearm I've ever had, it's the trigger. HOOOO BOI! I've had 1911s before, and they all had the best triggers I've ever felt since I started out as a Glock fanboy. BUT! The Shadow 2 is the first pistol I've had to have a similarly good trigger to all my 1911s. I don't know, I can't tell if it's the trigger weight, the amazing break, the crazy short reset, or just the cleanliness in the break in general, but I love it all! Honestly I think my only slight complaint about the Shadow 2 is the safety being so insanely small, but I usually start in double-action so it's not all that important really. On top of that, I mean it's a DA/SA gun and not SA only so I'd be MUCH more bothered if the Shadow 2 was single action only with the tiny safety. I do know I can switch it out at my leisure since my pistol came with the extended safety in the accessories included in the box, so it's no big deal.
For the "too long didn't care" explanation of my essay I wrote, get a Shadow 2. You won't be disappointed.

I bought a Shad 2,,, awesome gun, but would have been as happy with a Shad 1 based on your very visually informative and comprehensive review. In the end, I did find the 2 to be quite heavy - I'm 59 and never owned a pistol. Loved the Shad 2 grip - esp. the cutaways - and the balance is amazing.... but it is heavy. What are your thoughts on the SP-01 Competition? It's the same price point as the Shadow 2 but there's next to no info in any videos about in-depth performance. I bought one last week when I couldn't find a Shadow 2 in stock, the guy at the gunstore said it was more or less on par with it but I haven't been able to find much info. I'm planning on swapping it over to SAO with a CGW kit, so hopefully the creep in the DA/SA trigger on it now will dissappear, which is my only complaint, other than that I'm happy with it myself, I'm mostly just curious if I need to get a S2 or if the SP01 will suffice.

Hi Mark. The SP 01 Competition is a really nice gun, it has upgraded hammer with trigger refinements and I believe a steel guide rod instead of the plastic one that comes with the standard Shadow. Also the grip is cool. I wanted to get one but unfortunately it's not available in Canada. If I had a choice I'd go with the Competition version, the 02 is just too heavy for me.

Looks like the shadow 1 is simply a SP01 tricked out a little internally while the shadow 2 is a whole new animal and design. But is the shadow 2 worth the price ?? Or for that matter the shadow 1 when you can get a regular SP01 for less! I’ve only had the cz75b and it was nice for single shots and 2 and 3 shot bursts ok but not great for more rapid fire. So the heavier frame and beaver tale of the shadows and SP01 must help remedy that issue.

Very nice review. No hype junkie alike. Have been shot both guns and I’m more accurate with SP01 Shadow (probably I feel grip better) at first when you take S2 the grip feels better but when I shoot I get better groupings with S1 I don’t know why maybe is just me. Ok S2 for some is better looking gun but for me S1 looks more spec-ops and less toy like with those vibrant color grips. In my opinion if you need gun for everything S1 is better option if you want gun only for competition and/or shooting range than S2 is better but just a hair in my case is quite opposite :)
Considering price difference about 350 eur (400 usd) S1 is clear winner. S2 maybe just maybe worth 100 eur (usd) extra if that.

  • @philippk819

The nice thing about the SP01 Shadow for me as an Austrian is that it is really versatile when it comes to "legality" in different shooting disciplines. I was quite surprised when I realized that it is usable under BDMP regulations (BDMP stands for Bund Der Militar- und Polizeischützen - Association of Military and Police Shooters), since it obviously is used as a service pistol somewhere (the rule is that at least 500 guns of a certain type are used as service weapons). There are only few weapons on the BDMP list that actually double as "sports weapons". Another example is the Sig Sauer X-Five So SAO (but forget about using a SAO gun in IPSC Production)
For me that versatility is important, because if you newly obtain an Austrian gun owner's license, you are limited to two "Category B" guns (Pistols, Revolvers and semi-automatic rifles/shotguns). Obviously, the Shadow 2 doesn't fit into the service pistol category... ;-) By the way: The craziest gun to be found on the BDMP list would be the Desert Eagle .357 Mag (no joke)...I wonder who was crazy enough to field that gun... ;-)

I use my CZ Shadow for a very specific purpose: IPSC and 3 gun competitive shooting, and the Shadow excels at that purpose. They are easily the best price to performance handgun for competitive shooting in some divisions like IPSC Production. For EDC, they'd be too heavy and bulky, I wouldn't want to be carrying a 3 lb pistol all day. The Shadow is quite a different beast from the P30L: it's 50% heavier due to a steel frame instead of the HK's polymer frame, I'd consider the Shadow's fibre front and blacked rear sights to be superior for competition, but the P30L's 3 dot sights would be more practical for defensive use.

Some of the early Shadow 2's get a small crack on the frame (inside near the slide stop), but otherwise I'd tend to agree. By using the buffers, they should reduce the stress they put on the slide stop and reduce the parts breakage on it in the Shadow 2. Other than that though, the guns are pretty reliable workhorses.

Great review mate, thank you .... it really does come down to the Law of Diminishing Returns, which I apply to any purchase. As someone starting out in IPSC I am looking at the Glock 19 as well - the question for me would be, is a Pistol like the Shadow 2 $1400 better than a Gen 3 Glock 19? Because that is about the price difference between those two guns where I live. As you say, you've got gear to add to that top end cost ... belt, mags, ammo etc etc. At a mid ground compromise the Shadow 1 is easily the way to go - but when you consider the fact that both State Police, general Military and Spec Forces in my Country use the Glock 19 - and I can buy one well under $600 ... it makes the Glock look very good indeed. There is no way the Shadow 2 is $1400 more gun than a Gen 3 Glock 19 - if somebody can break that down for me and physically/practically demonstrate (head to head) where the Shadow 2 is $1400 better than a Glock 19 ... I'll buy one. P.S I really like the H&K USP as well! ... $$$$

It’s more about legacy, desirability, workmanship, ergonomics, build quality, aesthetics, rarity, “feel”, and the stated purpose of the pistol! Only issue is heat , but I yet have to see pistol used so much in one sitting that it melts a plastic guide rod. Cz guys normally know what they're doing. But very nice review.

I think it's a cost saving measure. No one's trying to save weight when they buy a gun like a Shadow 1 or 2, in fact they want the opposite. They moved to a steel guide rod for the Shadow 2 and CZ offers a steel guide rod as an upgrade on the Shadow 1. I don't personally think it makes a noticeable difference one way or the other.

@@Huntinggearguy That is true as well , but I agree , I dont think it makes a difference.

Well the Shadow 1 grouping at 30yds is way much better than the shadow 2

I fail to see a $500 difference. That being said... if you like these pistols you would do yourself a favor to check out many of the quality CZ clones that you can get your hands on. Pistols very similar to these in design and function in the sub-500 market
