I understand why Bartlett wanted to do this, not only to show that the president cared, but he actually did care. Unfortunately, the amount of protection presidents receive with the Secret Service, plus state and local law enforcement, trips like that can actually be a hindrance towards rescue and recovery efforts.

    • @thomasdonato6601

It's not really about caring here; Bartlett is at a low point, like in a daze. Semi-depressive state. His phone call to Leo shows how distracted he is.

Sorkin's absence is really felt during Season 5 (at least they shake things up the last 2 seasons with the presidential campaign): it's more 'muted', the lighting is darker, the levity is mostly gone, everyone seems depressed. There's a scene in this one where CJ kind of lashes out at Bartlet for his apathy and goes 'I need you to lead!' with tears in her eyes almost, and I tought 'something's off'. I do like the Christmas episode that year though

I think season 5 of the West Wing had some good episodes but it makes sense that season 5 was a little shaky as the new producers needed to move on from Sorkin and set their own pace.

I must confess love this episode think the lighting helps with the setting here and the ones with the government shutdown are great not my favourite season definitely but has its moments

@@hazmat7949 Of course it's still a good show - the Christmas show is fine and The Supremes is rightly considered a highlight - but the tone is very different compared to the first 4 years (inevitably). I feel the Sorkin years were for the most part a screwball comedy, and after he left, it became a down-to-earth serious political drama (which is fine) but it can be a drag to get through at times.

Having a president at the site is enormously distracting and requires valuable resources while it restricts movement, paralyzing the emergency response. It is a bad idea, it's better to call the governor and FEMA, offer your support and check in regularly.

I really did not like CJ after this scene. Basically CJ scolded the president because he had more important things to do than help a woman do the dishes or console one person. He is a human being, and a good one, when he sees someone hurting, he helps them. Basic humanity CJ.

My reaction is the opposite. She is one of his top advisors. His presence is getting in the way of people with a lot of work to do. He needed to be reminded that he is the president, not god.

CJ was right, though. His empathy was interfering with his role as POTUS. He needed to get out of the way and let others to their jobs so he can do his. A thousand people can do the dishes. Only one person can be President.

Typical Republican governor mentioning the "death tax." Particularly this one who resides in a state where a scant few might be affected. After Bartlet was told the median income of the trailer park victims was $31,000, his next line should've been "the so called death tax is the least of anyone's problems."
