I love the fact that you can always rely on Bryce mentioning that Rust In Peace is the greatest album of all time. This time it took 22 minutes and 42 seconds. I was happy and it also put a smile on Pete's face.

I love Slayer, Exodus, Testament, and Death Angel. Slayer is my second favorite band of all-time. LA thrash is great! But Sodom, Destruction, Kreator, and Exumer in the German thrash scene has fascinated me more and more in the last 5 years. Sodom, Kreator, and Destruction inspired me into early Black Metal. It’s because of those 3 bands that make me lean towards the German thrash scene.

For Sodom, Kreator, and Destruction, I have been following them since their first EP or album. The first three or four albums of each are great. I also love Tankard. Their background was more hardcore than metal, especially on their debut. If you listen carefully to their first three albums, they play faster than Sodom, Kreator and Destruction, especially with the drums. It is not blast beats, but it is close. Their album titled Beast of Bourbon (mid-2000s) is one the best thrash albums of all time.

I know this vid is dealing with the "Big 4" of both but man there are so many great bands. Forbidden, Vio-Lence, Suicidal Tendencies, Uncle Slam.. Tremendous. Germany and Europe have produced many awesome thrash bands as well. Outside of the German bands listed, bands like Coroner, Artillery, Xentrix to name a few. I think personally I'm more into the Bay Area / American Thrash scene... Slayer, Testament, Exodus, Metallica, Megadeth?? There's more melody in it, it's smoother.
Tutonic Thrash / German Thrash is more chaotic, akin to black metal and death metal in some cases. It's more brutal, harsh, and overall "heavy" in a sense... I can dig some Kreator but in general I need to be in the mood for it, Sodom is my go too for German Thrash

Tankard is a terribly underrated band. Sure most thrash fanatics love them and out of all these bands I still might rank them last. That being said they’re still a phenomenal band….sure they’ve always gone a little overkill on the beer lyrics but they’ve released numerous high quality albums. Their first album is in my top ten greatest thrash records of all time and I’ve never heard an album of theirs that I thought was bad. Can’t say that for the rest of these bands

The California side has had almost nothing change for me since I started listening to Thrash in '86
    1. Testament - love the whole catalog (usurpers of the crown)
    2. Megadeth - love most of the catalog (my original favorite)
    3. Slayer - love several albums
    4. Metallica - love the 1st 2 albums
I'm weaker on the German stuff and am still learning
    1. Kreator - has some great albums and I like the more I hear.
Sodom and Destruction I've only heard a little bit from and haven't warmed to them yet.
    I've never heard of Tankard.

  • @griefforest1870
    @griefforest1870 4 місяці тому +1

    Great video!
    Here's my two cents:
Love early Destruction, haven't really had the impetus to check out anything beyond their classics
Tankard: Heard many great things about most of their albums, but I've never really considered listening to them
Kreator: Great 80s and early 90s period, meh 90s, great 00s period but 2010s and beyond they lost some of their edge and became to melodious for my taste
Sodom: Honestly, there's not a single Sodom album I don't like. 'Til Death do us part might be their weakest one, but it still sounds like Sodom. Granted, their self titled was a bit slow and the stuff after that a bit modern but the latest one was oldschool thrash galore. New one comes out around Christmas, I'm excited.
Metallica: 80s great, 90s alright, 00s okay, 10s and beyond just fine, but nothing special.
Testament: 80s great, early 90s alright, mid to late 90s very good, late 00s to today great
Megadeth: I love the stuff from 85-92 (have yet to check out Youthanasia) and the last two releases have been great. Haven't listened to anything in between.
Slayer: Up to excluding 1994 one of the greatest bands, late 90s to early 00s meh, mid to late 00s alright, last album kind of meh again.
Thus Sodom wins this one easily for me, closely followed by Testament. If you look beyond the four main bands and take Dark Angel, Death Angel and Exodus into account as well as Holy Moses, Exumer, Accuser, Darkness and their respective latest output it's a tie, but that wasn't the question. Although the classic Thrash revival of the 2000s did not seem to bloom as much as the Traditional Metal revival which is still going strong there's still many great albums from older and newer bands alike.

I have a huge amount of respect for American thrash, especially bands like Slayer, Dark Angel, early Megadeth/Metallica, Forbidden, Testament, amongst others. However, if I had to pick, I’d have to pick Germany in this case, if only for Sodom. They never strayed away from thrash in their nearly 45 year tenure, and they’re still pumping out great music today. Kreator also pumped out great music, Destruction didn’t have quite as much albums I like but the ones I like I really love.
But if you threw Canada into the question, for me they were the best region of thrash full stop.

I'm gonna have to side with Germany on this debate. While Cali gave us those iconic bands, I don't think any of those bands are putting out material that rivals their "classic" albums. Credit to Metallica, as their newest is a huge improvement over anything they've been doing over the last two decades. Still, I have to give the nod to Germany. I think Sodom, Kreator and Destruction are creating vibrant albums that sit nicely next to their classic recordings. Tankard is a hard call. The last few albums are a bit samey and the thrash elements seem to be less prominent than before.

For me as a German guy whos only 29 y.o I pretty much lean to the americans for all their 80s Albums, Even when my favorite of all Albums could be sodoms persecution mania. End of the 90s its the other way, the German Bands Kick them out of the Park I think. Testament is Great in the 90s til today, Megadeth had some solid releases but the other two I dont care about much in recent years. Sodom is my favorite from all those Bands. What I love about the German Bands, they may lost their path somewhere in the 90s for Short period but they all came back equally as strong or stronger then in their Prime, the Cali Bands didnt really succseded in that.

As much I love the old German Thrash, the California Thrash was unmatched in quality and production.
    Except Megadeth.
As talented as Megadeth is/was, I'll never get over Dave Mustaine's chipmunk vocals.
I bought Killing Is my Business when it came out and I liked it, but found myself yelling at Mustaine's awful vocals as the album was playing..."stop singing!!" His voice were and still are nails on a chalkboard and it literally hurt to hear him sing.
Why Mustaine never hired a good Thrash Metal vocalist will always be a mystery to me.
    This was a fun show.
    Keep the Thrash coming!

because hiring a vocalist takes the power away from the boss as the vocalist is always seen as the "leader" and the most marketable of the band. Its why guys like mustaine or josh homme who can't sing end up being the vocalist because they want to squash the vocalist issues that plague almost every band where the vocalist isn't the boss. Vocalists tend to cause problems with bands because there's always friction between the guy who writes all the songs and the vocalist as usually the vocalist feels he deserves way more money because he usually has the most stock value from the fans even though he doesn't write any of the music.

Holy crap Bryce is on here, haven’t seen him on here in a while. I’m more in the Teutonic thrash more than California thrash. The stuff is a bit more brutal in the beginning, even Tankard was a bit more rougher with early stuff, even though they sorta remind of Anthrax of Germany. Don’t get me wrong I like all bands listed, but for me this is how I would rank:
    1. Kreator
    2. Sodom
    3. Destruction
    4. Slayer
    5. Testament

I can say 100% none of the german bands were ever influenced by the american Black Album movement as you say.
Beeing german i followed all and even more german bands from the beginning... they were lucky to get o a us Tour, thats it... they cared about lots of different things and influences.... Look what they did except for getting better on their Instruments, getting more technical, put coroner or later morgoth in as well... none ever tried or even thought of Beeing o metallica Level obviously

You like what you like and everyones favorites may vary. But if you take the best albums of Megadeth and Metallica like Ride, Master, Peace and Rust there's not much that can compete wirh those. Real masterpieces.
So those two bands can fall harder and get more flak for their later albums than other bands.
I'm a big Megadeth fan, never really got into Metallica, like Slayer but don't really play them that much, been dipping my toe in Testament the last couple of years and bought 2 early Kreator albums a couple of weeks ago and really like them.
My hunger for trash is growing again.

But since Metallica were the #1 band of thrash during the '80s, there's no way they were not going to be included here. Use some common sense Alex. As for Exodus, yeah, could have picked them, Testament, or Death Angel for that fourth slot. While most worship Bonded by Blood, many of their other albums during that period aren't as highly respected as Testament's among our panel, so we went with Testament. I'm sure if we went with Exodus, there would be plenty of people complaining that we didn't go with Testament. Can't win them all.

    • @AlexDizzys
      @AlexDizzys 4 місяці тому

@@peterpardo7563 At least Exodus didn't have a single ballad. As for Testament, even The New Order has fillers, the band will tell you that, they're totally open about it. Besides, Exodus were earlier, Testament released their first album in 1987. As for Metallica, they have only 4 thrash albums with the first two that are on the verge of thrash and heavy metal so why do you need to talk about them? Real Bay Area thrashers were Exodus, Testament, Death Angel, Laaz Rockit, Forbidden that was the core. In LA people hated Metallica. Slayer and Dark Angel were the real deal, extreme and menacing. Metallica moved to San Francisco and pretended to be Bay Area thrashers, that was silly.
