Megadeth's Dave Mustaine Answers Fan Questions
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 тра 2024
- Dave Mustaine has always been good to his fans. After we talked to the thrash pioneer about Megadeth's scorching new album, The Sick, the Dying... and the Dead!, we opened to the floor our readers' questions and had Mustaine answer the best ones. He thoughtfully opened up about the 30th anniversary of Countdown to Extinction, his admiration for Metallica's James Hetfield, his three favorite non-metal albums, a crazy time he had with a Sex Pistol and much, much more.

Nothing to regret, Dave. Had it not ended with Metallica, we would not be gifted with so many incredible Megadeth albums
the metal community benefited from the firing like it did when Sabbath fired Ozzy
damm right hahaha
My 2 fav bands, must feel great to be Dave!
Always say that, if he stayed, the band would've lasted like max 3 albums before collapsing, this way we got two great bands, and Mustaine got to evolve into greatness, because in Metallica he was co-writer/lead guitar/wannabe-leader, after creating Megadeth he evolved into main writer/all-around guitar player/singer/band leader, gave David Ellefson a chance to also do greatness and picked crazy talented musicians to fill up drums and lead guitar, like Gar, Poland, Friedman, Menza, DeGrasso, Drover, Broderick, LoMenzo, Dirk and Angra's legend Kiko Loureiro.
Everyone has been telling him that for decades, including Metallica, but he still doesn't listen. He's in sixties. I seriously doubt he ever will.
Dave and many others have been an inspiration to me . I am in my battle with stage 4 cancer . Just hearing of his triumph keeps me in the fight .
Get well soon! Sending hugs 💜
Get well soon
Best wishes, and get well soon!! I know you can do this
Get well sending Light and love and positive vibes and thoughts your way!!
fight hard, man. keep your spirits up.
It’s beautiful to see how Dave and James’ relationship has evolved, 40 years after the feud. Just two guys who respect each other regardless of how things ended
It sad they didn't resolve things sooner i would really like to see him and James makes something together
@@JM00237 maybe one day
I love how he mentions "Something That I'm Not" and "The Scorpion". The System Has Failed is a fantastic album.
One of their best.
It's a grower, but yeah it's really good. It was just so different sounding for a Megadeth album.
@@andrewvanhalen1984 To me, it was the return to Rust. Love that album, and his ESP signature axes.
I love this album it was the 'new' album at the time I was getting into megadeth and metal in general.
Kick the Chair and Blackmail the Universe are killer, but The Scorpion stood out to me recently
Can't believe he didn't mention the solo from Kick The Chair, that solo is mind blowing
The fact him and James are so cool now it's heartwarming
Yes, it really is! I wish the fan bases would do the same…
@@SIDEWINDER37 They've been cool since many years.. people just can't stop messing around when speaking about them.
@@TheMaxyms yeah, true
@@TheMaxyms him and james are cool he just dislikes lars which is fair tbh
@@Sage-666 him and Lars have always been good friends james and dave aren't very close at all
Damn, for him to mention the scorpion song is just amazing to hear. The system has failed is an all time great Megadeth record.
Great song and lyrics !
That is a criminally underrated album
It really is. I bought TSHF when it came out and dug it, but only after listening to it again recently have I realized how fucking good that album actually was. So many bangers on that one.
Amen! That album ranks second only to Rust in Peace to me.
I love that album! The solos are awesome and he had Nick Menza return as a session musician on it
Love how straight forward Dave is with his answers. Also love that he has a plaque for AIC's Facelift in the background.
It's good to see as it shows those pranks he played on Layne during the Clash of the Titans tour was done out of affection.
Dave, many of us fans never stopped buying and listening to your albums, so of course I know what album "Losing my senses" is on. Long live Megadeth!!
Losing My Senses is one of the few songs I really like from the World Needs A Hero.
I love the World Needs a Hero album! So many great hidden gems on it!
@@atranfanatic I agree! Losing my senses, burning bridges, dread and the fugitive mind, return to hanger and recipe for hate! These are all great songs.
Dread and the fugitive mind is the first Megadeth song I learned to play all the way through on the guitar. It will always hold a special place in my heart
one of my favorites songs and albums. I love the sound of Al Pitrelli and Jimmy DeGrasso on TWNAH
Okay but that first question was set up for him to reference James… I’m surprised he actually included Kerry tho.
I would say Scott Ian, no?
anytime someone mentions Kerry among good guitar playing it is surprising he can barely play Slayer songs sometimes
@@Dave_Wight_The_Rock_Oracle apparently back in the day he was an excellent rhythm player. I mean Ellefson even said when King played with Megadeth he was an impressive rhythm guitar player. Pantera said similar back in the day. Maybe he isn't as much now but who really is at that age, and I'd be the last guy to defend King.
@@Dave_Wight_The_Rock_Oracle he can play his own songs lol wtf? I saw Slayer in 2019 and Kerry was note for note
Jerry or Terry* listen carefully he doesnt actually call him Kerry.
The System Has Failed is one of the best Megadeth albums, and is such a testament to Dave’s pure and unadulterated talent, as it’s really truly a solo album. ❤
Probably one of my top 3 Megadeth albums just for Kick the Chair, Tears in a Vial, and The Scorpion. The other songs are great, but those three really kick things up a notch and set the atmosphere and tone with the instruments to match the lyrics.
@@TheRatlhed Agreed. I’d also add Blackmail the Universe, Die Dead Enough, and Back in The Day
Such a great album and its got Poland on lead !
On my top 3! Great album!
@@a.m.s7 Die Dead Enough is like another Victory in a way. Love Back In the Day too!!
A LOT OF PEOPLE DON’T HAVE A LOT OF NICE THINGS TO SAY ABOUT DAVE BUT NONE OF US ARE PERFECT BUT HE IS A GENUINE DUDE WITH A GOOD HEART AND ONE OF THE GREATEST MUSICIANS OF ALL TIME 💀
Dave supports Christian Nationalism, and Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn, who wants to take away women's rights to abortion under any circumstances and even ban some ways of contraception. And, naturally, claims that Trump won the last election. He also appears on the show of Alex Jones, who claimed, among other crazy things, that the Sandy Hook Shooting was staged. That's not a genuine guy with a good heart to me.
living legend....so glad to see he is still in his prime....all of these "old" rockers....its incredible to see they are still filling out stadiums and kicking some serious ass
Saw him 3 weeks ago in Austin. Incredible! It was no frills just freaking shredding the whole time.
@Brian X That's what I like about Megadeth concerts. The music is the show.
Good to see someone like Dave who grew up with just his mother have his own family and cherish it as much as he does. He understands whats really important in life
I love that Dave relentlessly keeps plugging Crowded House.
When I heard he liked Crowded House, that was the first time I heard that they had any success outside New Zealand, Australia and maybe the United Kingdom. They were obviously huge in New Zealand and Australia, but that doesn't always translate to international success.
"The girl who did the spoken part in the middle is a friend of mine named Jun. She worked at a sushi bar near the studio so we asked her to come and record with us. She is a cool chick and I still keep in touch with her. This song won us the Genesis award, given out by an animal activist group. At the star-studded Hollywood awards ceremony Ellefson and I tried hard to contain our laughter as these TV and movie stars got up on stage and anthropomorphosised in their acceptance speeches. "I'd like to thank so-and-so, so-and-so, so-and-so, but most importantly of all, Fluffy and Fido, for their constant inspiration, blah, blah, blah..." (Friedman, 2002).
Its good to hear alot from Dave. He seems very at peace
Dave, as a life long fan, I love seeing your humility and heart to go along with your always present cerebral self, you are finally a whole human being, reborn to grow to new heights
The solo of Losing My Senses is really great and beautiful and the lyrics are very deep and touching. I'd wish more people were familiar with those "not-so-known" Megadeth songs.
It would help if they played some of them live!
@@captainheh5826 I wish they played songs like black swan, both of the renditions are great in their own way
@@victherattlehead5099 absolutely! If Washington Is Next! doesn't come back soon with James back in the band, what a shame!
I've been a megadeth fan since 1986 and The World Needs a Hero is one of my favourite albums
I’m a newer Megadeth fan and I started listening in October, if you’ve got any recommendations for me I’d love to hear them
If you weren't a fan of his before this interview, holy f*ck, you DEFINITELY can't deny how awesome he is... especially now that he's been humbled... he just keeps becoming more and more human
Love Dave Mustaine no matter what.
Also great that, contrary to what most people think, he always gives credit to other musicians for their work ❤
Right on! That first Crowded House album is a great example of songwriting. An absolute pleasure to listen to.
I'd actually say the fastest down picker is Scott. Dude has some crazy down picked riffs.
I love the fact that he has the Facelift gold cd among his Golden albums.
My son and I went to see Megadeth on the 7th and Dave sounded great. He struggled with a few notes on a couple songs, but overall he sounded fantastic!
I'm blown away by his statements on James, I really would like to c some kinda collaboration between these two on a album that's not Megadeth nor Tallica! Both would sing, how kool would that b!!! As long as they both don't fall back into any adictions that is, my guess it would b James tho. Actually I think this should go down as the ultimate healing and just showing the metal community how it would of been if Dave never was made to leave!!!
Absolutely! I was pissed that they didn't use the opportunity of Kirk losing his riff tapes to bring Dave back in for just one album for _Hardwired._ The Hetfield/Ulrich/Mustaine/Burton combination is what got this whole thing started for both bands, and while Cliff ain't with us anymore, Trujillo is as good as anyone to cover for Cliff. It'd just be good to actually hear James and Dave on the same album together weaving that chemistry together, coz as much as I like Kirk and think they made the right decision to fire Dave, Kirk was nowhere near as good as Dave as far as the _Kill Em All_ solos go.
I’m surprised his favorite isn’t the one from My last words. Also nice to see acknowledgment to scorpion and losing my senses. Though he doesn’t play them live at least he remembers them many albums and years later.
1:12 this is why mr Mustaine will always by my favorite thrasher. He's just so... pure.
9:34 - now you need to make a music video of Mission to Mars. We need to see Dave Mustaine on a space jumpsuit and singing "I want to be an astronaut! I wanna I wanna wanna"
YES PLEASE. that'd be iconic.
Brilliant interview! Thank you!
Always great to hear from Dave!
Thank you God for Dave's gift and thank you Dave, for sharing it with the world. Bless you, brother.
Dave, I only persued music bc of the first 2 metallica records. I read who had wrote those songs and I got into your stuff. You're music is on its own lvl from day one of releasing music. You've faced those very demons in your own life that James is facing now. Maybe you could help him out. Im a cancer survivor myself. Ewings sarcoma. Rare bone cancer. I dont have much, but i have my family and my music and arts. Much respect. God bless.
Dave I`m really happy that I had a chance to follow your amazing career over the years and your songs and awesome lyrics - i really appreciate your all works !!!
I’m so so happy to see Dave making new music touring and back to health blessed to see it
Thanks for so much great music. You've been a huge influence on my own playing and writing.
Excellent format, cheers 👏
These were awesome questions. Good to see Dave doing great. Thanks for posting.
Thanks Dave for doing the interview, and thanks Revolver. There was nothing like this back in the 90s. I finally am getting to know so many of my musician heroes. Thanks to everyone that makes this free speech available.
This great. I have bought all and listened to all of Megadeth's albums. Your performance at the Amphitheater in Syracuse was utterly amazing.
What a fucking awesome pick for favorite athlete, I love GSP too!
Awesome stuff from Dave
Yoooooo Dave giving a shoutout to Losing My Senses made my day. I've been waiting to find tabs for that on Songsterr for years. One of my top 5 Megadeth songs
bro that first answer you gave made me respect you so so sos sosososososo mcuh i respected you before but man oh man when you said what you did about james ....i about cried i love it !!!
The title track is the best song on new album imo. So glad I've been able to see them live 2wice in my life. I've been a fan 30 years now. Living legend 1 of the best front men of all time.
I've been listening to earlier Megadeth a lot recently and really appreciate their brilliance still. Dave is very grounded after everything that he's gone through.
The greatest rhythm guitarist in metal history. A god of thrash. Love the new album 🤘🤘🤘
great interview, learned a lot, many thanks
I've always loved your music. Your ability to put real life emotions into relevant interesting sound was a great healing experience for me that helped me cope with some extraordinarily difficult times in my life. I'm grateful you have a great family and band. Thanks for being your fabulous self. 🙏
Losing My Senses is one of my favorite Megadeth songs!!!
It’s truly is an underrated masterpiece
He went into more detail about the dog incident in his book. From what he wrote throughout the book about James you got the sense he really liked him.
It was nice to meet all of you in Virginia Beach, Virginia on September 9 at your Q& A and the pit row at the concert which was awesome with my oldest son Larry Morris Jr.
Thank you, Dave, for this interview. It's always nice to hear honest responses to good questions.

I’ve loved you since Killing Is My Business... and the new record is awesome! Keep it up bro! Faster is better!
Dave, I would like to thank you for all the amazing music you provided me over the course of your career, it's been a constant soundtrack in my life ever since I heard Peace Sells and I would like to thank you for inspiring me to never give up, when times are tough, you've fought many a battle and always come out the other side victorious, your new album, is proof of that, Megadeth has never been better. Here's hoping: that there will be many more albums with current line up. Cheers!🤘🤘🤘
Really good interview!
If you watch this video, it is him answering questions, but he also lauded James as the greatest down picker among the big 4 thrash guitar players.
Dave Wights wife cries herself to sleep at night.
Loving the facelift album in the background!
I fill lucky to have a hero like you.. As a musician I fill proud as a kid u are Dave was always the legendary player... I remember hearing tornado of soul just blow my mind.. It's was just too difficult to play.. Going flash back make me wana cry.. It's was the time .. Where sleep was not in head. We play like carzy ... It's was the most memorable n fun days.. 🥺 the say think is that my frn or brother as I call him pass away whom I use to play with .. Teaching me to play.. He is the only reason where I'm at as a rock n roll lover..!? Losing him was a great loss... I miss him. Only a person who loss their precious frn will understand the filling..
Great interview
Finally had the awesome pleasure of taking my son to one of the greatest line ups ever - 5FDP, Megadeth, The HU & Fire From The Gods. I caught Dirk's broken drum stick at the end of your play set. Ironically, he's six years my junior and we're both Capricorns. Good luck and hope to see you guys out on tour in the near future. 🤘😝🤘
Cool interview with thoughtful questions. Long live MEGA-DAVE.
Thanks for answering these questions! I Love Megadeth!
I love Dave, he's my favorite frontman out of the big 4.
Glad to see his favorite solo is from a great song and not one of the mainstreams one. Really like Losing My Senses too.
Also great to see he remembers all the records and stuff they don't play live anymore, hope to see some of it yet again.
Good stuff Dave, thank you! Make more beer, I actually really like it man!
Genius Musician, Incredible Human , from what he has overcome to be where he is today , Megadeth takes a backseat to no one ! They are equally and even better than Metallica , think of all the musicians Dave has played with , what a rare feat ! Only people with strong survival skills can accomplish, I don’t even know the man but I truly admire him
Dude dave is such a legendary human being man, such a huge inspiration to me and just a fantastic talent all round, and is it just me or does dave seem much more chilled out nowadays and a little nicer?? because it seems that way to me and I'm all for it droogies haha fuck yeah 😄🤘
It is good that you expressed your feelings and thoughts about all of it. I have not seen it come from the other side. But. That doesn't matter. You made it clean. Good for you
Mustaine speaks, I listen.
4:59 I love the song losing my senses off of the world needs a hero is such an underrated masterpiece. Glad to here Dave loves the song too!
Dave Mustaine at his finest. Always best interviews with him. Right to Point ☝️☝️
My all time favorite musician and the reason I picked up guitar and self taught myself. I hope he keeps living life like a the badass he is for a long time
Love you Dave thank you for your art and the Band and always your support to our Veterans
Love that Steve Jones story!! 😂 I remember Dave asking a fan that same question on That Metal Show years ago.. I didn't get what he meant from that Suction part!! Lol, hilarious 😂
Thanks for the upload. Dave your a role model and legend. FYI Satriani sings back ups on the First Crowded House album . I worked for homeless people and Dave your authenticity would be acknowledged by them. Being authentic is the key ✌️🤘🏴🇦🇺
I was just listening to the system has failed album and thinking, wow Dave can stand on his own, his solos are so good on that one, aggressive and melodic.
Of course Chris Poland did the bulk, but yes, great moments for Dave on System.
Dave is such an amazing dude.
The Chosen Ones solo is something impossible! One of his best. I have no proof, but I have no doubts either.
Great Q&A
Rust In Peace! 🤘. My favorite Megadeth Album
Dude... MY LAST WORDS has my favorite Megadeth solo EVER!!!!
Dave bringing up The System Has Failed 🤘 The Scorpion is my favorite song off the record, please play it live soon!
Dave Mustaine is an inspiration to me because he is clean and sober like me. I just celebrated 21 months clean and sober last Tuesday.
Wow, hes become a lot more humble in his old age. Much respect.
I like how the light on top of Dave makes it look like he has a halo.
9:15 I wish Megadeth will record a live show with symphony orchestra someday!
Dave did it's on UA-cam
@@Duck_Dodgers yeah, I know, it was great but it was totally different thing tho. I would love to hear Megadeth' songs
Out of all the 'Big Four' players, I love and respect Dave the most. I don't always agree with his viewpoints, but he's still the coolest.
Dirt Dart, too cute! First gig on the moon! Love that! Long Live Dave Mustaine!
God Bless you Dave, I was also born at The Same Hospital as you . Within Months of each other. Love You BRO!!!! . Grossmont Hospital. My Mom was Fourteen and My Dad was eighteen. My Dad is living with me. In Mt Juliet Just East Of Nashville. I Grew Up In Poway!!! I used to drive north to vista and listen to you at Vic's Garage.
Great video !
Awesome!🙂🙂🙂 A living legend.
wow i love crowded house, lot of pretty vocals on that record
Mr.Dave you are the real deal. Thank you
One of my favorite bands is Scatterbrain .humorous lyrics and outstanding guitar playing!! They had a couple hits on MTV.. Don’t Call Me Dude and Down With The Ship a medley of classic rock!! Here Comes Trouble is the name of the album!! It’s a good time!!
That was a good interview and gsp is my favorite dude is badass
You know what...thank you to your dog Dave. 🙏 rip puppy
We wouldn't have MEGADETH today. I'm always on team MEGADETH!
I'm not on anyone's 'team', so to speak, and I have no idea why people think it's some sort of rivalry. I don't understand that mentality. I fucken love Megadeth and am constantly listening to them, but have also grown up first with Metallica before I even knew of Megadeth many years later. I suppose in a way, that dog was part of why we have 2 of these great bands today.
The Facelift album in the background!
God bless ya Dave!
Dave is a class act. Hooyah Dave.
Dave you are awesome ❤️❤️
Hanger 18 is a guitar masterpiece.
