  • Certain decisions have to be made when you are buying or selling a boat. When buying or selling a boat, you have to decide whether you hire a yacht broker to aide you in the process, or if you’ll handle it all yourself.
There are pros and cons to each side, and in this video we go over the pros and cons of buying / selling a boat with a broker as well as a private party sale. The information on this video is based on our opinion and experiences, but provides a good base to help you decide how to buy / sell a boat.
As far as which one is better? That’s up to the individual to decide. Certain conveniences and inconveniences hold different weight with different people. We would do either without hesitation, but would also put a lot of time and effort to ensuring we don’t make a costly mistake with our decision.
Thanks for watching. We hope you enjoy the video!

Team Wiff is simply our names combined (Will & Tiff). Together we are on a journey to get the most out of our lives, while avoiding being trapped within the societal norm.
What started it all was the idea of living on an affordable boat in Florida for a year. In May 2016 we bought a 51ft Bluewater coastal cruiser which was a powerboat meets houseboat. We lived at several marinas in the Fort Myers area and quickly learned the ins and out of living aboard.
We apparently liked it. Instead of buying a house, we ended up with a Sea Ray 480DB. We think it’s arguably one of the best boats to live aboard. This boat has allowed us to get a taste of the cruising lifestyle, while we’re still working and living aboard full-time, in Fort Myers Beach as well as Key West.

OMG... y’all are scaring me... planning to buy a boat by the end of the year... just kidding, we envy your trips and unfortunately the headaches that come with owning a boat. Many blessings and wish you good luck, hope to meet you in the near future at some marina or sand bar. 👍🏼

I always enjoy your videos, of all the boats I have purchased and sold I have always used a broker but I will admit it was not always the best choice. Your commnets on Title are very helpful, my most recent purchase was a complicated title issue and if I was not using a company to handle that for me I am positive I would have problems. Good luck on the sale but keep power boating, I am planning my live aboard life and not many do it from power boats.

Very insightful, thank you. Ya-al are so casual and easy to watch. Take us on your boat shopping, you are going to stay salty, are you not? Lighting much better, Oh, like how your hair turned out, I'm a fan of Afro but seem to be more avant' guard(?). good for you. I went to a 95% black school and always worried about the kids not getting out of the white privilege trap and just be as great as they can be. that was 65 years ago and it is nice to see you made happen in my life time. Ya-al keep it up.

Sad to see you selling RumHaven. 😦 We used a broker when we purchased Happy Ours. The purchase went smoothly and they handled all the paperwork. I never saw the broker and everything was done over phone or email, so a little nerve racking in that respect. When I sold our last smaller boat, I handled that privately. I made sure the liens were cleared prior to the sale which made it easier. My only concern was making sure the check didn’t bounce and my boat disappear. That went without a hitch also. Good luck on your next adventure. Thanks for all the enjoyable vids! You really helped us learn the south Florida waters where we hope to be in a couple years and perhaps run into you one day. Safe travels!

One potentially HUGE BENEFIT to using a broker is the offset of sales tax, if you buy and sell with the same broker, within a specific timeframe. Depending on your sell/purchase prices, this can be a nice chunk of change, and offset a good portion of the brokerage fee.

I dont get why I am dealing a broker looking at a boat with an ask of 12,950 now contracted for 12,000 pending survey. The boat is 12K and I am a certified marine technician im not paying for that but I will short haul the boat. He really pissis me off when he tells me I NEED a survey for insurance. NO I DON'T! no one is going to insure a 1985 IP 27 against hull loss. A liability policy is all I am going to be able to get so if it sinks... i'm out 12K. However you were a big help. This is a USCG documented boat and that is uncharted waters to me. I did not know it was his job to walk me through that.

Great video! Just checked out the boat on boat trader and it looks really nice. Cleans up well! In your experience as a broker, would you recommend allowing pets onboard? I know you all have cats but I’m curious about the pros and cons.

You guys got me interested to the idea of one day living aboard. However, since I'm aged a bit, I think living on land and weekending on anchor is more of a reality for me when I'm old enough to retire. Are you giving up life on a boat for now?

What would you say in this market, where boats are harder to find? We have been looking and the disparity between prices are wild, and because they're harder to find the sellers seem less apt to negotiate. Thoughts?
