"don't just call me pessimist, try and read between the lines..." is probably the most important line in the song. Not so much hate as it is frustration and a hope for change, like a parent with their child.
I agree on it being the most important line.. here's my take on it copy pasted from my comment above. What I see between the lines is Maynard projecting his own internal conflicts and self pity under the guise of hatred for his observable reality. When you start hating so many things you're seeing, you gotta realise at some stage that you're the common denominator. As an artist, by putting his name on this expression he can attribute this reality as his own creation and therefore acknowledge the expression as a projection of himself, allowing him to more objectively use it to reflect on himself, and in turn understand/control his internal conflicts better. Observable reality is after all just an illusionary manifestation of ones own consciousness. And Maynard is pretty switched on to that kind of stuff. The title of the song also correlates with this analysis, derived from the words anima, meaning soul, and enema, being a procedure for flushing out and cleansing internal blockages or irritatioNs, with the extraction sometimes being analysed to determine a course of better health. Considering all that, it makes me wonder if he was really insecure or nervous about swimming at some stage of his life, as he seems to be telling himself to learn how to swim over and over.

I’m a rock fan that always had an awareness of Tool but never really dove in till a few years ago. It’s just on another level. Gotta be in the right headspace but it’s such timeless multi faceted art
you should check out other prog rock artists too, there's dozens of awesome ones out there that could compare to Tool. prog rock is an amazing genre in general, every song is like a story/fairytale in and of itself. and there's sub-branches of prog rock as well delving into more psychedelic, experimental, punk, neo-wave, tech, math, pop, noise, etc.. it's a very multi-faceted genre.
Just curious if you have heard of the band Jinjer? If not check em out. They are a 4 piece progressive metal band from the Ukraine and in my opinion they are the metal version of Tool.
Welcome to my world. I'm also a rock fan and was aware of them, but never dove into them til the beginning of this year. What should I say? They are f***ing geniuses!
@@env0x I’m starting to. I’ve listened a bit before. I think I have to ease myself in haha. In the past, a lot of prog struck me as “being different for the sake of being different” whereas tool always seems to have melodic and thematic reasons behind their choices. But, my mind is opening to it all, so if you have any good recommendations I’m all ears!
Great video. Love that you listened all the way through. I never feel like people are getting the full experience when they pause it 5 times to talk in the middle. Wish all reaction videos were like this.
Still one of my favorite songs all these years later. I saw them for the first time in the late 90's. Still one of the best shows live you will ever experience.

Well, ok so wat. Its TOOL after all right? But I wasnted the best seats n to get the VIP tickets which were over $500 for 2. Ok, shit, watever! It's fucking TOOL. Since i cant drive id hv to uber it. They are the rare bands that 25 years later can still give me chills and a huge endorphin rush that can hit as hard as the first time I “listened “ to it as well as the first time I actually “heard” it (probably about 30 listens)
Literally the best reaction video ever. No stops or BS. This dude went on the journey that is Tool! The first time I heard this back in the day it blew my mind. Watching this blew my mind again cause I was watching someone else having their mind blown! The power of music. This is in my playlist now🤘🏼🇨🇦🤘🏼
Maynard was a friend and fan of comedian Bill Hicks, who was also a genius w/ his words. Maynard is a HUGE comedy fan & while this was tongue & cheek, he kinda meant it. He actually lives in AZ Bay now!
He's talking about California breaking off and sliding into the ocean after massive earthquakes. The place where it used to be would be called Arizona Bay.
He also says not to call him a pessimist and to read between the lines.. Nothing to do with swimming, it’s about not drowning in mediocrity. That’s probably the single most hated attribute Maynard and Hicks have awoken me to when I found them. I knew Tool since the first LP in the 90s, but didn’t discover Bill till a decade after he’d passed on. That’s when I revisited what Tool really was contributing.
you are the first reactor i’ve seen that has really listened to the lyrics and the music and understood (as much as anyone can) tool. rock on brother. i’m watchin’ you’re reaction to 46&2 next.
The album art for Aenima has a lenticular printed image of California with LA disappearing into the ocean, creating Arizona Bay. Tool's album art is on another level.
Wasn't that the plot of Superman (1978)? Buy up all the desert in Arizona then trigger an earthquake to drop California under water and be left with ocean front property. Doesn't Maynard own some vineyards in AZ? Wants to be the next Napa!!!
Now, He is #1 in the world point blank , bar none, Portnoy #2 and Mangioni #3 , then everyone else , Nicko, Lars, Vinnie Appice, Ian Paice, motorhead, slayer, saxon, megadeth, QRyche ( both of them ) , Alex VH all #4 , then all the reset of rock, hair bands, and dont forget a nod and RIP to all gone, including Karen Carpenter - DOH !! ;)
Hey, thanks for doing the work to get that together! You gave me a whole new appreciation for Maynard and Tool. It was nice to get to see what the lyrics really were. You rock!
I saw them in Pensacola FL in 2007. Best concert I've ever been to by far and away. Musical prodigies creating masterpieces for 30 years. Best band ever.
The "mouth agape in appreciative awe" reaction says it all. Game recognizing game, yo! NO ONE in music throws better caustic, on-point shade than Maynard.
I discovered this reaction a week ago. I had a horrible, very stressful day today. Came back to watch this again. Watching your face go from jaw fucking DROPPED to a huge grin @ 2:30 made my damn day. Again. Lmao. So thanks.
I lived in LA for 10 years and kind of just got settled in things there. I left for Vegas just before the pandemic, and went back for the first time this last weekend for a wedding. I couldn't believe how about that city had gotten, and how bad it probably always had been. And now hearing the song again for the first time since that trip, I was just smiling from ear to ear. Hahah fuck yea Maynard. Great timing on the reaction video, and great content, man!
I lived in L.A for 3 years I could not believe how toxic you became without realizing, they way you realizing it is moving out of there, i miss many things like nature and the 7, to 9 woman.
Huge thanks for not interrupting with your thoughts and comments as the song played Thank you for using lyrics, theyre 50% of tool's musical impact Thanks for a great review. Liked and subbed.
This song and everything about this song and Maynard's voice and every instrumental sound in this song during every word of this song still gives me chills that I can hardly even breathe. It's like a soundgasm through my whole body
The whole album is full of hard goodbyes; to places, friends, drugs, and heroes. They all become effigies to sacrifice. And, like the feelings evoked during the final track 3rd Eye hints toward, its only after you have experienced that sacrifice that the reward may come. I was blessed to see them live in 97' during this period of their artistic journey. They helped me learn how to evolve as a person. Really.
I have been listening to this song for about 25 years now. Damn I feel old now... Anyway, I still get skin tingles to this and many other songs from them. They never get old.
Yeah, he is saying "fuck LA". He hated the city so much he moved to Arizona. But he also says "don't just call me pessimist, try and read between the lines", so while he's pointing out all the bad shit about LA, he wants to see things get better. Your next Tool song reaction should be Lateralus ☺️👍
My dude, your face while you listened to this is the best thing on the Internet, today. I shit you not, it made me appreciate just how awesome this song is again, and I remember when it came out. Hell yeah, man. Great video. Subscribed.
You’ll see a ton of support on any tool reaction you do cause all us tool fans are chasing the dragon. Just went through the reactions you did and it was pretty fun to see your progression of “how do I even bob my head to this” to “fuck it I’m a fan.” Happens to most people who listen to it with an open mind and it’s nice to see someone doing that. Good shit my man.
i can make a whole day of it... just watching TooL fans be born. it's magical. it's what we all wanted when we played TooL for our friends in our car, we all wanted to see this sort of reaction... but all we usually got was indifference or confusion.
Tool is legit as fuck man, it's a "thinking man's" kinda band and I know you had mentioned you liked lyrics that make you think. You should check out the song Right In Two next I feel. Absolutely use lyric videos if you can or have the lyrics up so you can follow along with the song. I was never super into Tool when I was younger because I was so angry I got into Slipknot and "heavier" shit first. As I've gotten older my musical tastes have shifted and over the past few years I jam to them all the time!!! If you're a cannabis user like myself, you should just listen to the whole Lateralus album from start to finish in a dimly lit room with some headphones on and something to smoke on. My GF and I recently did that with edibles and she was blown away. She's from India so she had no idea what to expect given all the shit I've had her listen to haha. Great reaction bud, and you got a new sub from me today. Have a great day and thanks for sharing!!
"Thinking man's kinda band" now I am not a hater at all but this guy listens to some songs and thinks the artist is directly talking to him or dissing him personally lol. Won't understand TOOL imo.
ya, it took me ( a hard core Rush , Dream Theater, and Maiden fan ) a long time to not consider them just another grunge band ( with Sober ) then the minute I heard Justin break into the intro/verse of Schism, I knew I was hooked on something very new and very special.
Check out their song Lateralus from their album of the same name. It’s one of the most creative songs ever made and my favorite of all time by any band. It implements the Fibonacci sequence, which is a mathematical pattern found in nature in how spirals form in plants and animals and even the Milky Way galaxy. The song uses that metaphor for growth and even implements that pattern in the syllables used and in the time signatures and more. One, one, two, three, five, eight, thirteen, and so on. Spiral out! I’m loving your Tool journey so far 🌀
This is the same reaction I had when I heard this song at 16 in the back of my friend's car. They played it and I honestly feel like that's when I became an actual, real life person. I asked them to play it again, they did, and I've never stopped listening to it. I'm 36 now, I took my 15 year old son to his first concert last Friday, Tool. He says he's a fan now. I only hope I did for him what was done for me twenty years ago, opened up a world of music with meaning and such a deep, deep sense of human that wakes me up, shakes me up, and never fully lets me rest on this mortal coil. Spiral out.
Maybe you already know this, but here is a funny fact: Tom Morello and Tool guitar Adam Jones grew up together. They had a highschool band and were roommates on college. And because of that, you can hear Maynard singing in Know Your Enemy
This song, as well as their song "The Pot", were written because Tool hired a California Law Firm, to settle a lawsuit, then the Firm they had hired turned around, and filed a suit against Tool trying to claim rights to some of their music. Tool couldn't release any new music, do any tours, or even do a show for ten years over it.
This song will NEVER get old....I bought that album the day it came out & I still rock this on a regular.....best band on the planet,no one else even come close
Watching your face during these reactions is priceless man. This was back in the day when MJK was pretty angry about a lot of things - shifty and underhanded LA business people in the recording industry being one. The song seems both metaphorical and literal - he says at the end he's not just a pessimist & that there has to be a better way.
It’s cool that people make reaction videos because it introduces people to new music. Just remember to sit back and listen. Don’t talk. Just listen and let the music take you on a journey. Ride the spiral till the end. It may just go where no one’s been.
Yesss!!! One of my favorite bands of all time. Love seeing your reaction to this! More Tool songs for ya… just a few more to start-🤘🏼 Opiate Vicarious Stinkfist
This album came out when I was 16, 26 years later this band is one of my number one go to bands. Maynard's lyrics and Tool's sound is fucking timeless!
Tool puts their stuff together in a way that's meant to be listened to in the order they put it on the CD. It's hard to listen to a whole album when you're doing a reaction of one song at a time... But there's a "next level" when you can listen to the whole CD at once. Their transitions from song to song are a whole new level of art.
Tool, System of a Down, Rage Against the Machine, Rammstein, Slipknot and Incubus are some of the bands that i'm proud i've kinda "discovered on my own"... One of my older cousins introduced me to Led Zeppelin, Queen, Pink Floyd, Nirvana, AC/DC, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Pantera, REM and many others... and these were some of the first bands that i'm glad i've introduced him into.
Love your reaction man. They really are something special, even though it isn't for most people. Doesn't have to be your regular music taste to realise that's a top 100 song. And it isn't their only epic...
Why is watching black folks discover Tool one of my favorite things? Aenima has been my favorite album for nearly 30 years now. It's just that fucking great.
It's been so long since I first heard this and it's fantastic to see someone discover and hear it for the first time. Brings it all back. As others have mentioned check out the late great Bill Hicks Arizona Bay routine. Then check out the Tool song Eulogy which is about him. Never forget the man
ive just spent a year down here in LA and i can tell you this hold so true down to the last note 30 years later. im moving out of this shit hole this weekend and i have had this song on repeat since encountering all the "smiley glad hands with hidden adgendas" and "gun toting hip gangster wanna bes" tool has been my favorite bands for years and will remain that way. if you keep covering tool material i can guarentee the tool army will support you.
The interesting thing about Tool is that they never released any official lyrics with their albums until "Fear Inoculum" (2019)... fans would always have to just listen closely and make out the lyrics the best they could. There were online newsgroups over the years (before Reddit existed) and fans would piece together lyrics and debate their meanings.

you should check out other prog rock artists too, there's dozens of awesome ones out there that could compare to Tool. prog rock is an amazing genre in general, every song is like a story/fairytale in and of itself. and there's sub-branches of prog rock as well delving into more psychedelic, experimental, punk, neo-wave, tech, math, pop, noise, etc.. it's a very multi-faceted genre.
@@shaunbryan3421 I’m starting to get into them actually. I’ve just started to dive into the world of screaming as a vocalist so yea Tatiana is a beast
The band that changed my life

Still one of my favorite songs all these years later. I saw them for the first time in the late 90's. Still one of the best shows live you will ever experience.
You’re slowly reaching the peak of their songs bro. You’re going to love all their songs. There’s a saying about tool….your favorite tool song is the one you’re currently listening too. They’re that good imo
I have been a TOOL fan since 93! Just saw that twice in 18 months here in New Orleans.. They know how to rock da fucking house like you can't believe!! MAYNARD JAMES KEENAN IS A LYRICAL GENIUS!!!
yes he is! But dammit man. 2 times in 18 mos!!! Fuck me! I wanted to see them this yr (2024) wen they came to Florida so bad but they were clear accross the state in Hollywood n I'm in tampa. Well, ok so wat. Its TOOL after all right? But I wasnted the best seats n to get the VIP tickets which were over $500 for 2. Ok, shit, watever! It's fucking TOOL. Since i cant drive id hv to uber it. Ok thats another $500. Still doable. Finally wud need a hotel......point is I guess is I DIDN"T GO!!!! Who knowa if i'll EVER get another opportunity again? I cud kick myself! Soooooo, finally my point to u is how envious of u I am. Kinda hate ya...lol just kidding
I've been listening to this album for nearly a quarter century.
they are all amazing, but aenima stands out still. just dark perfection.
Same. And it's still just STUNNINGLY good!
Same same
They are the rare bands that 25 years later can still give me chills and a huge endorphin rush that can hit as hard as the first time I “listened “ to it as well as the first time I actually “heard” it (probably about 30 listens)
@Branch stay at home Dads unite! or just stay at home...either way. 😁
This is the best reaction!!! you are so honest and I love that you were affected like this so strongly! THEY have changed my life. Subscribing!!
"I wanna sing that on the way to work and in the shower" ... Story of my life
Literally the best reaction video ever. No stops or BS. This dude went on the journey that is Tool! The first time I heard this back in the day it blew my mind. Watching this blew my mind again cause I was watching someone else having their mind blown! The power of music. This is in my playlist now🤘🏼🇨🇦🤘🏼
According to Spotify, this was my most listened to song last year.
Thanks for clearing that up...
Thanks for playing it all the way through and then reacting. That’s really the best way to “hear” them. Excellent job. ❤️
Danny Carey is one of my favorite drummers of all time
Now, He is #1 in the world point blank , bar none, Portnoy #2 and Mangioni #3 , then everyone else , Nicko, Lars, Vinnie Appice, Ian Paice, motorhead, slayer, saxon, megadeth, QRyche ( both of them ) , Alex VH all #4 , then all the reset of rock, hair bands, and dont forget a nod and RIP to all gone, including Karen Carpenter - DOH !! ;)
Original thought that really contributed to the discussion!
My top 2 are Carey and Peart.
@@Wag2112 dont forget Jimmy Chamberlain from the Pumpkins - one hell of a jazz / rock drummer - still in great shape in 2022
Hey, thanks for doing the work to get that together! You gave me a whole new appreciation for Maynard and Tool. It was nice to get to see what the lyrics really were. You rock!
If you want a real life changing experience, you need to see them LIVE!!!
I saw them in Pensacola FL in 2007. Best concert I've ever been to by far and away. Musical prodigies creating masterpieces for 30 years. Best band ever.
Just saw them for the 14th time 2 days ago🤘🏼
@@rudya.4812 My 14th show is in 2 days 🤣
I'm seeing them on march 15th for the first time and I've been a fan since the beginning. Not sure why I've waited so long!!
@@shannonochoa1040 At least you get to see them.. It's a surreal experience
Loved watching your face during this whole thing. ....That's really the only reaction needed.
....Long time Tool fan here btw.
Of the huge amount of tool review/reaction channels I like yours the most. It's great how honest you are. Subbed
Huge thanks for not interrupting with your thoughts and comments as the song played
Thank you for using lyrics, theyre 50% of tool's musical impact
Thanks for a great review. Liked and subbed.
Tool is otherworldly and couldnt be happier i have tickets to see em in Feb!
“Learn to swim!” I love watching people discover what i was listening to in high school. Its like “yay another one gets it welcome! Welcome!”
This song and everything about this song and Maynard's voice and every instrumental sound in this song during every word of this song still gives me chills that I can hardly even breathe.
It's like a soundgasm through my whole body
Happy to see you giving this band a chance & liking them. "Right in Two" by Tool has deep lyrics and would make for a great reaction :)
Probably their most poignant and thought-provoking song. Incredible lyrics that have changed lives, perhaps mine included. 🤘🏽🍻
Cosigned, right in two is my favorite
Is this a whole damn diss track on a state!? Lol you're the man
The whole album is full of hard goodbyes; to places, friends, drugs, and heroes. Really.
Dope comment man, I see it’s layered. “They all become effigies to sacrifice”, that hit hard.
Nah, the lyrics are based on a stand-up comedy routine
See Bill Hicks

My dude, your face while you listened to this is the best thing on the Internet, today. I shit you not, it made me appreciate just how awesome this song is again, and I remember when it came out. Hell yeah, man. Great video. Subscribed.
"i gotta hear this about 13 more times today"
yeah man...same here. Tool has that affect on people
dude you are too cool. i love Tool and I dug your comments. you heard it right! im lookin forward to checkin more of your vids. take it easy brother
Yes sir
That was cool to see the way it affected you. Thanks for being honest and for being vulnerable enough to allow the art to do its thing!
Greetings from India.
"Thinking man's kinda band" now I am not a hater at all but this guy listens to some songs and thinks the artist is directly talking to him or dissing him personally lol. Won't understand TOOL imo.
You can love TOOL and Slipknot both, it's not a problem. ;)
Definitely a thinking man's band. I think about aliens and anal sex a lot more thanks to them.
ya, it took me ( a hard core Rush , Dream Theater, and Maiden fan ) a long time to not consider them just another grunge band ( with Sober ) then the minute I heard Justin break into the intro/verse of Schism, I knew I was hooked on something very new and very special.
Thanks for posting bruv, You did an amazing job covering this masterpiece..
Spiral out.
Just took my 8 y.o. daughter to see them in Grand Rapids. Gotta plant the seeds early!
Enjoyed the reaction. My first time listening to this song as well. Really liked it and ready for more Tool. ❤️🔥
Tool will pull you in i got hooked in the 90s.
Maybe you already know this, but here is a funny fact:
Tom Morello and Tool guitar Adam Jones grew up together.
This is a long shot, yet I think you may like "Wings for Marie pt 2". One of my favourite Tool songs.
Every new song is gonna very your favorite haha All so unique and amazing from album to album. Enjoy this crazy journey my friend!!!!
This song will NEVER get old....I bought that album the day it came out & I still rock this on a regular.....best band on the planet,no one else even come close
I just found your channel today and this is my favorite reaction by anyone to anything.
Watching your face during these reactions is priceless man. This was back in the day when MJK was pretty angry about a lot of things - shifty and underhanded LA business people in the recording industry being one. The song seems both metaphorical and literal - he says at the end he's not just a pessimist & that there has to be a better way.
Saw them live in Fall 2019...AMAZING like they never aged a day. Many of their songs from the 90's still hold up..because well: PEOPLE.
My favorite Tool song hands down. After all that tension in the song the melodic release towards the end is absolutely amazing.
It’s cool that people make reaction videos because it introduces people to new music. Just remember to sit back and listen. Don’t talk. Just listen and let the music take you on a journey. Ride the spiral till the end. It may just go where no one’s been.
I’m loving you watching you go down the rabbit hole and join the Tool army!
I learnt to swim. Now I'm just waiting. Flush it down.

Yesss!!! One of my favorite bands of all time. Love seeing your reaction to this! More Tool songs for ya… just a few more to start-🤘🏼
Opiate

When I listen to this album I feel like I connect to a higher level of consciousness.
Maynard James Keenan didn’t do lyrics for videos and songs so that the listener could interpret them for themselves. Maynard is a lyrical genius!
Personally..since day one .I just put the album on and play through.. whichever one it is..just play it
Thats what i like about system of a down as well ..... those albums are meant to listen to in their entirely
Welcome to TOOL. A band with something to say, and the skill to do it well musically. Happy to have you with us.
You make my day with reactions like these, this here is the reason you are the only reacting to videos person on UA-cam I fucks with.
check out two rockin grannys !! ;) doin Tool, Slayer, Maiden, Nightwish :) Good stuff
This was a great reaction video man! Tool will, quite literally leave you speechless.
Vicarious, Right in Two and Danny Careys Drum cam of Pneuma all must dos 👍
Hahahaa! That last bit made me crack up. You love Tool bro and we love you 😂😂
Great reaction, looking forward to the next one! 🤘
Why is watching black folks discover Tool one of my favorite things? Aenima has been my favorite album for nearly 30 years now. It's just that fucking great.
+1 this - Tool Army at work! :)
I appreciate the hard work! Great video!
Tool are also fans of late comedian Bill Hicks, rest his soul

Keep'em coming dog. YOU rock
Thanks for listening then reviewing. Got my sub bro good video
It's been so long since I first heard this and it's fantastic to see someone discover and hear it for the first time. Brings it all back.

I loved man. Your reaction was 🔥. Keep ‘em comin🤘
ive just spent a year down here in LA and i can tell you this hold so true down to the last note 30 years later. im moving out of this shit hole this weekend and i have had this song on repeat since encountering all the "smiley glad hands with hidden adgendas" and "gun toting hip gangster wanna bes" tool has been my favorite bands for years and will remain that way. if you keep covering tool material i can guarentee the tool army will support you.
Everyone remembers their first time listening to AEnema.
They had lyrics on Aenema, on the back cover. But they were written in code.
Bro I love watching you fall in love with Tool more and more with each song you hear!
