Haven't seen a cover of Voodoo Child that blew me away like this since Stevie Ray.
But is it real?
Check out Jimi Hendrix, his set at the the end of Woodstock!
How in the world does a keyboard player, think and play like a guitar player. I love it. Thanks.
Glad you like it
Since synthesizers came in the game and that’s a long time ago. Where you been all this time.
Yeah man, that sounds a helluva lot like a really good rock guitar!
Look up Jan Hammer.
@HUUUUUURRRR I can’t recall i said this was a synth. All I said this is not new. Like it’s from yesterday or a few years ago. This been around like about 60 years like the guy said. Listen to Jan hammer in Mahavishnu orchestra for example.
The grandfather (Ernst Zacharias) of a friend of mine invented this thing (the Clavinet) for Hohner, albeit without the whammy. Unfortunately, he died last summer at age 96, before i got the chance to meet him. I think he would have deserved at least a Technical Grammy for his inventions (besides the Clavinet, he also invented the Pianet and other instruments), given the Clavinet's influence on popular music, especially in Soul, Funk, & Reggae. It's in the same league as the Fender Rhodes or Hammond B3.
Wow that's amazing. I need to look him up. The early versions of the Pianet are awesome too. Yes definitely an underated classic keyboard. Got to be the funkiest instrument ever made.
Don’t ask me why but I purchased a Pianet/Clavinet about 30 years ago at Sam Ash White Plains New York. It’s very cool to be making music with an instrument that not only has real strings but it has those tines as well…
@@johnnyxmusic always wanted to have a play on one of them
@@LachyDoley, You’ll feel just like Stevie Wonder. You can certainly get those sounds from a lot of modern keyboards but you can probably only get a feel from a real Pianet or Clavinet.
Yup. I agree. there are classic keyboards like you mentioned that have emerged through the years and the Clavinet was definitely amongst that list. They were a little on the delicate side. I'm surprised Hohner doesn't bring them out again. Most, if not all, of the modeled versions suck, IMO. And part of these iconic keyboards have a unique feeling keyboard that's specific to the instrument that make that much more unique. Ex. A Clavinet keyboard feels completely differently than the keyboard of a B-3, Fender Rhodes, etc. and most synths don't have the same type of keyboard as the Clavinet. Plus, it's just hard to get all of the harmonics, etc. of a Clavinet with a synth.
Imagine Jimi’s reaction if he were alive to see this.
I hope it would be a good one
@@LachyDoley I would believe so... Wow!!! Man, You blew my mind.
He’d love it!! ❤️
@@LachyDoley yeah he'd love it no doubt
he would be proud and blown away
Been a Hendrix fan for 30 years and, Sir, that was absolute FIRE! Awesome.
Woo cheers :-)
Honestly what have I just witnessed, unbefrickingleivable.
ua-cam.com/video/gEQ2ia1bP0g/v-deo.html&ab_channel=TheCrashKings
This is amazing. Jimi would be smiling ear to ear and geeking to this.
Woo sure hope so
@@ulusot Maybe but Jimi never struck me as the Johnny Guitar Watson kinda amgsty player about stuff but who knows.
Agreed.
I realize there have been many innovative keyboardists over the years, such as Jan Hammer, Herbie Hancock, and (one of my faves) Vincent Crane....among others, but I think Lachy is "inventing" or adapting techniques to expand the keyboard vocabulary. There have been many guitarists to come after Jimi, emulating him almost perfectly, but few (if any) keyboard players. Thanks for posting, Lachy
Thanks so much TG. Really appreciate your comments
@@LachyDoley my first visual impression was you were about to kill that beast. jesus christ! very enjoyable rendition, impressing technique. love it.
A lot of covers of Hendrix sound like a softened version to ease your patents mood… This could be the original.
Don't forget Betniev Worrell
Just when I think I've seen or heard it all, along comes somebody like this guy. I am impressed.
Hey thanks so much Roy
Hendrix was there. Kneeled down, burning his guitar. While passing the torch to this brilliant lad! NFA 😎✌🏽
oh my god, I did not expect him to start singing... amazing
If this is not the best keyboardist of the last 100 years I would be shocked. I was voting John Lord up until I started watching Lachy. This is Eddie Van Halen of the Keys!
Wow! That was something else. What a performance!
Lachy Doley caught the "Jimi Hendrix" spirit very well : bravo !
never knew how much pianos/keyboards needed a whammy bar...
Wow. That was a stunning performance. Tone, feel, groove, all of it. Pitch bend wheel has major envy!
Hey thanks Marc.
Crank yr pitchbend up to 24 . Butt he certainly makes the Clavi sing like a Guitar .
Lachy Doley has to be seen LIVE! Epic.
The first time I saw this guy he played with the whammy bar so naturally I thought it was just a regular part of the clav and it took me at least a year before I realized it was a mod he had done himself
Yeah it's a cool addition
@@LachyDoley "cool addition" doesn't quite cover it - I'm putting it at way fricking awesome. I love people modding their instruments to do something that instrument isn't "supposed" to be doing. Oh also, props to your bassist and drummers for laying down a tasty-as-heck groove :D
@@LachyDoley Lol. Talk about understatement.
Thank you , thank you .
You are very welcome
Chocked to the brim with dynamics and TONE! Thanks for the positive vibes, Lachey!
Yay thanks Kurt
I am seeing this guy at Bulli pub tomorrow night. Looking forward to it. ………Here we are a day later and I have been to the concert. This guy and his band are sensational. This clip does not do them justice. They are much more dynamic and the sound is “fuller” live.
This guy on the orange shaker cracking me up! DON'T WORRY MAN! I GOT THIS SHAKER COVERED!
すごい!こんなことができるなんて。
ユニークなアイデアとこれまでの鍛錬に深い敬意をもちました。
This is insane!!! He can literally do cover band members part! Bass got it, drums here ya go, keys really?? Guitar here hold my drink!! You Sir are a beast
Hey cheers mate
This amazed me honestly.
Absolutely incredible! The only other keyboard player I've heard be that expressive on a clavinet is Bernie Worrell.
ExcellentA+
Wow, that's one hell of an instrument. What a performance 👏
Thanks so much Chris :-)
I have this dude on my "spotify" liked list and thought the whole time, (until now) that he was playing the guitar!! Nope. I'm even more impressed now I was before! Pretty fuckin impressive!! Well done!!
Hey that's awesome. I imagine there's a few people on Spotify who would think the same without the visual
Steve Hillage has entered the chat and is not amused
Whoever designed the algorithm to drop this in my feed...THANK YOU
Speechless......
Right on brotherman....kickin that ass......dig...fo sure
I feel like the audience didnt have a clue as to how amazing this performance is/was. Or am I just really late to the party and this has been a thing for a while? I've never seen or heard anything like this from a piano. Amazing, Sir. Truly amazing! Jimmy would be blown away.
i believe the audience had to stay somewhat quiet for this as it was a studio recording session with viewers invited
Jimmy who?
...the indomitable spirit of the '60s. It's hard to see a lot of what came later as much more than a footnote.
Jimi would cry for days if he could see how happy his music has made people and how many people have mastered it so many ways and styles
OMG!!!!❤❤❤ WICKED!!!!!
WOW! I'm sure that Whammy Clavinet is going to catch on fire one day Lachy!! 💥🎹💥🎹💥
Yes maybe Bahaha
Well that’s my mind blown for the day and it’s only 6.30am here in the uk. What an incredible performance. Yes I know that the keyboard playing and the sound are incredible but the voice and presence are just as amazing . And the band too. Glad I found this. I’m sold !!!
Woo. Awesome thanks so much Paul. So glad you dig it
Wooooooow and wooooow again, astonishing impeccable performance doesn't even cover it HALF.... waaaauw lovin it puur sec !
Getting to wammy all day long and never going out of tune! Living the dream and sounding good while doing it!
That’s incredible! What a performance - that’s some crazy talent and skills. Whole band rocks.
Wow marvelous. As good as it gets. Sung and played on keyboard with a great amount of feel just like the guitar version
Woooow!! What a band. Instantly blown away by the drummer. And the voice of the singer. And the sound engineering is top notch! I'm a fan.
Cheers Jonathan :-)
@@LachyDoley Just checking out your two latest albums (thx for this optimistic title). And your drummer's channel. Haha! "Gimme some lovin" is a great cover. Keep on rockin!!
It is so hard to wrap my mind around what I'm watching right now. WOW
Ehi Lachy ! You are truly amazing, I never get tired of listening to your talent
Damn he played from the Roots of Jimmi Hendrix 🙌🙌
It's like Jimmi Hendrix came back to the world and performing
Wow too kind Muhammad. Cheers
@@LachyDoley That's the truth, I swear I hear Jimi playin' 🎸
Amazing. On EVERY level.
Jimmy would definitely approve! Awesome!
I sure hope so!
Great Job! Hendrix would be Proud! :) and he will join the JAM right away...
Incredible. Loving the hell out of this!
Hey thanks John
WOW. JUST WOW

Flawless performance Lachy 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I always get goose bumps with this song.
Wow thanks Franco
Jimi would be listening 🎶🎼🎹🎸
Woooow!!! Great!!!!!
Cheers
Génial....
Phantastic! 😍👍
Just yesterday I repaired one of the Marshall Amps Jimi Hendrix played. Pictures uploaded on my FB. It´s the Super Lead most left in the Live In Maui 1970 Voodoo Child Live Video. ✌️
Greetings from Switzerland 🇨🇭
That's super cool
I've (obviously) already left a couple of comments,.. but, feel like adding this one. I have alot of friends who are musicians like me, and they are equally impressed!! I'm a huge Hendrix fan and gotta say "this is one of my favorite versions of voodoo child"!!! Thanx again and keep shreddin!!
Not just the playing - but the voice as well! Holy cow!
Thanks so much
Woooww.👍👍👍👍👍👍.. Very Gooood.. Crazy. Thank You 👏
Thanks Peter
Blimey that was an incredible cover, the combination of a good voice and mad instrument seems to work
Glad you dig it Joseph. Cheers
I TOTALLY could hear how you could have gone into it around the halfway point here, when you slow it way down with the whammy, so it's now mandatory that you play Sledgehammer as soon as possible with all of these awesome musicians!
To jsem ještě neviděl.Ùžasné fantastické paráda.
This is sicker than sik farkin’ love it fully juiced and amped with soul,,, now that’s what VOODOO CHILE IS ABOUT YEEEEEW
ROCK & ROLL!!!
🤙🎼🎹🎸🥁🇳🇿
he’s not only mastering the D6 but the Wah as well. absolutely amazing (poor D6 though 😉😂)
Yes the D6 has rough time :-)
1:08 - Did he say he stands up next to a muffin? Just kidding, he absolutely NAILED IT!
muffin man :D
Phenomenal.
Thanks so much
This guy is a GOAT, no doubt about it.
WOW,......Again you have blown me away!......It is soooo good,.....Can't believe I get to hear you in the present times,.....since I spent the last year catching up, on years of your past performances. Bravo!
Good illustration of just how many different techniques go into actual guitar strings
This is absolutely fucking insane. Mad scientist level creativity. Crazy ingenuity
That was pure Genius. Brilliantly executed. Wow!!!!!
Hey thanks Joes
Love this tune. What a great version the crowd however looks like they've been served a very stiff cup of chamomile tea.
It does make it easy to to listen to, though, not having any ambient audience noise
It's a recording session, & they're wearing headphones, so I imagine they were following instructions.
@@jinglebells8194 Yeah, cool. Not helpful, but thanks.
Stiffly stifflers, I think they need the crow bar!
😂😂😂
great Lachy ,very nice slide lever!!! I hope one day you will come to play in Italy, and maybe in Florenc where I live!! Good vibration!!!!!!!
What in the Heck?
What did I just watch?!
A-freaking-mazing!
Thanks for posting this.
❤️✌🏾
Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing. The amount of work that went into this performance is incredible. You can tell this was rehearsed to exhaustion.
Glad you like it. But we're just jamming. Not big on rehearsals but we have played it at a few shows now
@@LachyDoley With the band maybe, alone though....this was practiced a lot.
I have never seen a keyboard that looks and plays like this. This is amazing.
Cheers Jef.
blows my mind every time... this whammy and the way you play with such a skill and expressive passion - you're just great!!! loved it!
I've lost count how many times I've listened to this. Just as amazing every time!!!!🔥
Wow. Awesome. Thanks so much
Wow! 😮
Killer version brothers!!!! :)
Unreal thanks
¡Genial! Una maravilla lo que haces, Lachy.
MANE!!!!!!! Dude!
That’s pretty cool!!!!
band: we couldn’t find lead guitar
Lachy:

Woo thanks Pamela :-)
Excellent AF! Unbelievable, for sure!
Cheers Dwayne
I amost didn't click to watch this. So glad I did. That was BADASS!
Woo thanks so much Michael :-)
Caraca Mano !! ! !! Muito Loko ! Excepcional !!
This is mind-blowing for the fact that no one's ever done this but I think what's even more mind-blowing is the fact that it took this many years for keyboards to catch up to Jimmy's sound and it's only close but no cookie 😂
Oh My god,i it's exelent interpretation, 🎩
Since there doesn't seem to be any comment thread dedicated to the keyboard he's playing I'll bite. He's playing a Hohner Clavinet. A D6 model to be precise. Hohner Clavinets have 60 (!) guitar strings inside of them, which in turn, have wool yarn woven through them to act as a damper. Each key has a little rubber "hammer" that almost looks like a little black pencil eraser directly underneath it, when you push a key the rubber hammer pushes the string down onto a little brass protrusion known as a "tangent", while also simultaneously releasing the string from the dampening yard allowing it vibrate freely. The resulting sound is a very sharp and staccato note that closely resembles a hammer-on on a guitar, but with more thump and definition, and of course, that unique Clavinet "doinkiness" that is it's calling card. Oh, and all the sound is carried through with what basically amounts to two GIGANTIC guitar pickups (about a full foot wide) that are wired to six rocker switches on the left hand panel that control tone and pickup phase. On the right hand panel is a little mechanical slider mechanism that presses a secondary damper over the strings which basically acts as a physical means of controlling the decay of the note.
In case you're thinking "that sound is *so* familiar to me!!" you're most likely thinking of either Superstition or Higher Ground by Stevie Wonder, Trampled Under Foot by Led Zeppelin, or Cripple Creek by the Band (believed to be the first published song to use a Clavinet). Billy Preston also used one to record Outta Space.
Perfect - Hohner D6 best playing 🎩👏👏👏
Wow, thanks Juergen
I sat here watching and smiled
Firstly there is a band listening to each other and jamming
Secondly how freeing it must be for a keyboard to bend notes with such blues tone that doesn’t feel techy
Love it a lot
Thank you
So glad you like it mate
Beyond keyboard playing, the voice is amazing!
Wow thanks Teresa
God Damn!! woW!
Cuando no quieres aprender la guitarra pero quieres sentirla
