  • An intercooler is a key component to any forced induction build, be it turbo or supercharging. As air is compressed it generates heat, so without any means to cool it down your intake air temp will sky rocket, severely restricting engine performance. This is why many choose to run an intercooler, the most common type is the one I'm going to fit in this video - a front mounted air to air intercooler. I have chosen to mount mine directly in front of the MX5s radiator in the air dam, which will ensure it gets a constant flow of fresh air as I drive the car. This process should cool the air charge going into the engine, reducing intake temps and increasing performance. In this video I'll go over how I've mounted the intercooler in the front of the MX5, this will involve removing the front bumper and then fabricating some brackets.

Very nice. Top fed intercoolers are alot better than the 'go-around-the-radiator' type, which is what I have. Having some clearance issues with my ARB and may have trouble upgrading my radiator :(
Your cars looking neat now !

It was quite fiddly lowering the radiator but it's been worth it. Running the intercooler piping has been a doddle thanks to that mod. So have you got the stock rad in factory position?

Great build mate. Missing the capri videos though. Is she still getting some love?

Thanks Matt. Capri is getting some love! Filming a Tech Tip replacing the rear wheel bearings at weekend. There's some adjustable TCAs to go on, then it's off to the dyno. Will be doing video updates as I go. Cheers 👍🏻

Do you have the part number or info about which intercooler you used? Thank you.

does it interfere with closing the hood ?

No interference because of the lowered radiator. You wouldn't get away with this setup without moving the rad.

    How reliable is JB weld?

It's a good question! I've only ever used it to patch up a leaky diff cover. And to be fair to it has lasted years. How it deals with 'shearing' forces remains to be seen.
