Any car running air temp sensor and MAP sensor instead of MAF will benefit
This is only providing that the ECU sensors stay in the original place the cold air filter will only help if it's in its own cabin and far better connecting this to the original location for cold air feed from the manufacturer
They don't build the car to recycle the warm air from the engine

While putting a cold air intake on it will alow the engine to breathe so it will be louder but it’s also some what better for the engine. $400 K&N cold air intake was great on my 5.7L sequoia for almost 20k miles.
Then it threw codes and ran lean.
Paid $500 to two Toyota master techs to diagnose. They checked the entire fuel line, plugs, engine, etc.
It was the cold air intake. Sold it to someone and put oem back on. No issues the last two years and 17k miles.
Also does nothing for mpg. Just makes nice sound. That’s all.

They also sell water cover mesh that you put around the filter to keep it from getting soaked and who ever is dumb enough to sit their car on a deep puddle/flood or drive through a flood where their filter emerges in shouldn’t be modifying their car.

Just FYI, most engines have adaptive tuning, based on the air to fuel ratio, which get altered when doing a CAI, the ECU adjust as needed by itself.

    • @justindelvalle9179
      @justindelvalle9179 3 роки тому +68

This couldnt be more false. Many modern engines have parameters in the ECU which pertain to MAF scaling and the size of the intake tubing. When you change the diameter of the piping that the MAF sits in but dont change the scaling in the ECU, you change the Grams per second airflow which will effect the engines ability to properly calculate fuel injector duty cycles from idle to redline. This means that lean at idle is extremely lean at redline, and lean is a good way to induce knock, and burns holes in pistons due to excessive heat.
The ecu can only correct so much until it maxes out certain values and then it gives up and turns the check engine light on. This could be triggered from anything from a high or low voltage/current or performance error for the MAF sensor or a correlation between MAF and MAP readings. This could also trigger a rich or lean code for the A/F ratio sensor due to the extra airflow that the ecu cant compensate for.
Blanket statements are dangerous when it comes to things like this.

Well, I had a mk5 VW GTI like the one in this video from 2006-2020. I brought it in to the dealership for my first free oil change. When the service dude pulled off the engine cover he broke it at the rear left grommet and didn't tell me. The mk5 GTI is a really good car but there is one major design flaw - the air filter is part of the engine cover and the air passes through it! I didn't know it had a hole until I took it off when I changed my spark plugs. By then the warranty had expired. Turns out the leak messed up the air system making the car jumpy. When I replaced the engine cover it drove a lot better. Because of its multiple parts, a new mk5 GTI engine cover is $350. So I went to ebay and a kid who bought one of the those cold air intakes no longer needed his stock engine cover and I bought it for $35 plus shipping. So cold air intakes are good for one thing - devaluing stock engine covers. Because of that experience I stopped going to dealerships, even for the free service, and do it myself with one exception. I got a new car and the stereo screen blacked out. The stereo still worked but you couldn't control it. The dealer replaced the screen under warranty.

Did it 5 times and made sure to record mileage and made sure time engine ran and sure that matched on a MPG basis. Kept track starting with a full tank to empty each time and did it when I knew my driving route would be identical and drove the same way. Consistently had a 5-6 MPG increase. With stop and go traffic it might have been less or worse, my driving was 80-90% on cruise control at 60 and 65. Was getting 33mpg instead of 27-28mpg. I think Mazda listed it as 30mpg on highway.
I was told to make sure I disconnect the battery for at least 10 minutes when I switched air intake. I believe it had to do with it causing the MAS to reset itself. Idk if that mattered but that's what I did🤷🏿‍♂️. Also have no idea if power was increased, didn't care. Only got it for gas mileage.

With a tune however, you'll gain ~10hp but tunes could push more with the help of a cold air intake. Example, my car atm has 325hp and 420 nm (309 lbft) and runs stock intake, just by adding a cold air intake, I could dial up the boost from 24.6 psi to 27-28 psi.
Edit: I install a cold air intake a day after the comment. I dyno'd it again and made 350 hp (320 whp) and 472.5 nm (348 lb ft) at 28 psi of boost

Yes an air intake like that is within the noise 1-2% difrance in strenght
Togheter with 3-4 more parts that are within the noise
Then with a tune and you can get even 5-6% per tune part
That could go from maybe 6-8% with everything to even 20% with everything after a tune
A cold air intake on its own is nothing but togheter with a good exhaust a turbo or a supercharger maybe even both it will do a lot more than just 1-2%
Also the check engine light is because the car is not tuned to accept the cold air intake
Also you can get an email tune witch while not as good as a dyno its better since usually you get multiple free extra tunes some even for life and they are good if parts keep coming in
And the tune being a high price should not be the worst problem if you want to upgrade you re car
Tldr: the cold air intake is usless and only a diffrance of 1-2% if its the only thing you change in ur car
    Be patient

Scotty you are missing an important point ,cold air intakes are “Very” useful if they are Ducted correctly and flow is controlled , same with and “Exhaust system” I agree 100% with tuning any engine that has been modified any sort of way

most modern cars now come with a factory installed cold air intake... and it was designed by engineers for the cars it was installed in.... I cant see your point regarding intakes being tuned because the factory cold air from volkwagen was designed and tuned by engineers, not boys in baggy pants who just happened to know what a dynamometer is.

@@jonasmartinez1739 cold air intakes work in conjunction with other modifications. That's when horse power is increased. Cars from the factory are usually not tuned for performance, that is why performance cars usually require to be tuned, to squeeze out extra horses.

@jonas Martinez is repeating what Scotty Kilmer already said because he’s watched every video and now he is an expert in tuning a engine lol.. maybe try to go actually educate yourself about engines before saying something stupid about baggy pants which has nothing to do with engines LOL

Uh map and maf sensors do the small tuning for you. Never had a check engine light for a intake mod because thats what the map and maf sensors do.

I like the k&N filters that fit in the stock intake box.

My BMW has a cold air intake stock from the factory. The intake mods involving removing the silencer and replacing the airbox with one that can fit a big cone air filter inside of it

If its in the engine compartment its still sucking hot air. It has to be in the grill on the other side of the radiator.

If done correctly it is a decent mod. If you can modify the stock intake box to house a cold air intake and maximize air flow to the filter you should get a noticeable performance gain (with a dyno tune of course) and you get a great induction sound.

I have a cold air intake from Injen that mastered and the first with patented from Japan. I had installed two months ago. And I bought two Flow Master mediums exhaust mufflers and got rid of the resonators. I have no check engine lights on.

The factory air intake is usually well thought out and appropriate. Actual dedicated racing cars are different as you pointed out. The headlight bucket makes a nice inlet for the cold air box :-)

Scotty those are not cold air intakes.. these are normal instakes without any housing for fresh air coming into them, instead the one your showing soaks up lots of engine heat.. a proper cold air intake would be air filter housed in a container and then fresh air feed from the outside into the air intake.. like how manufactures design them... when you buy the car.. sometimes the manufacture design is the best...

This is one thing I disagree on. I always run a cai inside the front bumper and it helps in the summer taking intake temps from 152 to 98 degrees. My car was overheating with the stock intake.

    • @911Salvage

The right solution is to buy a car that does not overheat when operated normally.

Had my CAI on for a few months now with no tune and bone stock and I'm satisfied. I also got it for this summer so i can keep my engine cooler. My car does run better also. Most modern day cars won't get a check engine light just for a simple CAI, mine has never came on once.
