  • Ken Tanaka of Wish4Fish is back on the water! This time fly fishing in the South East region of Iceland with Fish Partner (www.fishpartne...) on the famous lake Þingvallavatn (Thingvallavatn) and it's sister lake Villingavatn for MONSTER Ice Age Brown Trout. These were some of the strongest fish I have EVER caught by far!
    My gear that I was using was the Douglas Sky and Douglas Upstream PLUS with the Ross Colorado LT and Ross Evolution R SALT. My line of choice was the Rio Products In-Touch Streamer Tip 6ips as well as the Rio Gold In-Touch.
    Thingvallavatn is 83.7 km² and is the largest natural lake in Iceland. It lies along the North Atlantic Ridge, sitting where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates separate from each other. The lake is considered to be 12.000 years old and formed by land subsidence and lava dams. Canyons and fissures mark the National Park’s landscape and cut the lake bottom in many places reaching its deepest at 115 meters.

    It's strange to see the treeless landscapes out in Iceland. Guess you don't need to worry too much about the backcast. Great looking fish, they look really healthy and fresh. Sticker arrived in the mail and is on the fly tying desk. Thanks for the video.

      @Wish4Fish  5 років тому

      Not sure if you’re aware of this but ALL the good water is private. It’s not like how it is here.
      There is a public fishing license that will allow you to fish 50 or so streams and lakes. Although you’re not going to catch and fish like this.
      You need to go through a guide service or outfitter. Fish Partner does sell licenses guided or unguided.

      Wish4Fish oh awesome my 7 wt should be perfect then, I hope to go to Thingvallavatn this summer to catch a on brown what time do you recommend to go and what are the laws about fly fishing there in terms of licences and season??? Great vid btw👌🏼

      You will not be able to fish that lake without going through an outfitter. Thank you very much. June for the lake. Matter of fact everything in Iceland is private and you have to go through an outfitter that owns the rights to the water and the beats. I suggest Fishpartner.com.

    Why do some of the fish have white bellies and the others golden brown? Different strains or male/female or....?

    • @Wish4Fish
      @Wish4Fish  6 років тому +1

      Those are coming out of 2 different lakes. Just a matter of diet and habitat. The silver one is the Ice-age Brown Trout. That is coming from a much bigger lake. Sort of like how lake run fish tend to get more silver when they are in large bodies of water. I have seen diet, volume of water and water quality effect the coloration. Those 2 more yellow Browns came from a lake that was attached to the larger lake. So same strain but the lake is much smaller like a pond.

      Wish4Fish I started fishing with Smallmouth bass and they say that bass fisherman know the most about their fish. Well if I can add some truth to that sentence, bass will adopt darker colours when near structure and when they are schooling off structure they will turn more silver. Don’t know if it goes the same way with trout but I have seen this to some effect with brook trout. 1 brook trout I caught in a lake was almost silver, then casting to where the stream ran out of it, I caught an almost black trout. The stream had vegetation and cover from the sun.

    • @Wish4Fish
      @Wish4Fish  6 років тому

      Devon Bustard - I don’t think that is the case. Since most streams have the same structure as well as lakes.
      The only difference I see in color in trout is the difference between water purity. Not sure if it’s the water or what they are eating. Like I mentioned all the spring creek trout tend to be much more colorful. I think it’s because of the difference in what they are eating. It could be just because of how clean the water is. I think it’s similar to aquarium fish. When you change their diet to a higher quality feed they tend to color up. Obviously fish will color up during spawn as well as alpha vs weaker fish. Although the similarities from stream to stream makes me think it’s more diet related.

      I mix it up. Some have tips and some are just fishing. Can’t be all of one of the same thing. You and I will both get bored of it.
