Utterly brilliant video. I am a huge Nomos fan and so the biggest compliment I can pay you is that I would buy your Nomos design in a heartbeat! Nomos, if you are reading, sign him up.......
There is no better compliment than this, Dan. Thank you so much! It would be an absolute dream to have a piece like this produced. All we can do is hold thumbs. Again, it means so much having my work appreciated by so many, but means far more when a devotee can accept my ideas too.
Good job with insight into Bauhaus design and how Nomos applies it to its watches. Your take at the end is a perfect rendition of some they should consider developing. Thanks for the great content!
Oh wow, this video has just sent me off down a rabbit hole of design history. Been obsessing over nomos recently since discovering them and now I know why. I’ve always been in to mid century modern homes and had heard of form follows function and love the minimalist aesthetic. And now I know why 😎👏👏👏. Thanks.
I understand that this is watch design channel, but damn, can you please do video like this on Bauhaus design only like some furniture or different products?!! Please!! These was great!
Thank you, Mihajlo! Of course I'd love to do a series about Design in general and who knows, this page may evolve that way in the future! There is a lot more to watch design than just the way they look and I reckon your suggestion about talking about the entire aspect of design movements and products of the time would make a huge difference in understanding the fundamentals! If an opportunity presents itself, I will definitely do as you ask, man. Thank you for your suggestion and support!
This video just confirmed to me its worth owning a classic within their first 20-30 years of existing. I have faith they will eventually get to your idea of design aesthetics and branch out!
A watch design channel ! How cool is this?! You bring new content to the watch community and make conclusions on it in a logical and consequent way, you do really great. All this so importand brands stand on the feet of Bauhaus and you made it clear and understandable. Thank you for beeing on UA-cam sir.
Here's a second topic for a future video. As a Designer who loves Art Deco, I've had a passion for rectangular watches my whole life. This was most likely due to my dad's favorite watch, a gold rectangular Longines given to him by my Mother in 1954. For years I owned an inexpensive but classically designed Seiko gold rectangular watch. When this was stolen several years ago I vowed to replace it with something better. I currently have a JLC Reverso, and an Oris Rectangular Complication, plus the two dress watches on my wish list are a Cartier Santos-Dumont (the first men's wristwatch, pilot's watch and arguably sports watch), and my ultimate grail dress watch, a Patek Philippe Gondolo, in white gold, with a rose colored face, small seconds, Arabic numerals and brown Crocodile strap. Also the classic Cartier Tank is a favorite of mine, plus any number of vintage rectangular watches from the 30's like the Hamilton Putnam, etc... So, a video on the myriad of classic rectangular watches would please the designer in me, and be a great design exercise.
That was an excellent lecture. I just watched the 1 hour BBC documentary on Bauhaus and this followed it up handsomely. ID Guy; I'll be watching you...
Hi, I just discovered your channel and it's awesome. I too am a trained Industrial Designer (Purdue Univ. '78) from a family of Designers and Architects, two brothers and a sister, Industrial and Graphic Designers, Father a licensed Landscape Architect. I love your design perspective on watches. I However I went a different path with my career and have been a professional pilot for 40+ years and of course a watch enthusiast and collector. I collect and wear pilots and tool watches. My first professional tool watch was my Rolex GMT Master purchased new by me in '83, which I still own and wear today. Topics for discussion... First as a designer with a critical eye there are often watches that I would like to change. You do so with your ID skills and a computer, but it's just fun wishful design unless produced. Case in point, my everyday beater watch is a modded Seiko SKX007. I loved the basic design of this classic, especially the case, dial and hands but didn't like the bezel, insert (I no longer dive) the mineral crystal nor the cheap bracelet. Enter the huge Seiko watch modding community. I need an inexpensive travel international watch, so I redesigned it... switched the bezel to a Rolex Deep Sea style, 12 hour brushed SS, dual time bezel insert, Sapphire crystal and brushed SS chapter ring for continuity. Gone is the rubber strap replaced by no less than a dozen NATO/Zulu straps for any occasion. A designers dream! I now have a waterproof tough classic dual time zone watch that I can take to the beach, pool etc, in Miami, London, Hong Kong or Sydney, my normal work destinations, plus it gets consistent compliments. So a video on the watch mod community, and how YOU would modify the current modifiable watches like I did. Check out me, my collection, passions and profile at "The Watch Guys" on Snupps... snupps.com/Healey. I Look forward to hearing from you. Curtis
BTW, I love Bauhaus design (especially Nomos and Junghans) but I'm also huge Art Deco movement fan. My top three watches are my Rolex GMT, Speedmaster Pro and a JLC Grand Reverso 976, the ultimate Art Deco dress/sports watch! A pretty good three watch collection, IF I could stop at three!
Most underrated channel on UA-cam! Where can I buy that last watch? :D No seriously, I love Nomos, but I honestly prefer your designs over most of their models, especially your last design. Greetings from Germany!
Extremely well presented as usual, Nomos watches are possibly of most people's radar, certainly mine I must admit. But you have ignited curiosity to delve further......good luck with the interview lol !!
Thank you, Vaughan. I might be extending my reach a bit too far, but hey, questions are always good to ask. I would love to have the last piece made. The more I've been studying it, the stronger I feel that it could be such a breakout...but hey, I'll keep you posted ;)
As always, Carlos, thank you! This is really a passion project of mine. For the first time I get to talk about my field of Design but also about a brand that exemplifies my industry! Muchas Gracias!
Thanks for your educational video. I have heard the term Bauhaus before but have never had it explained to me. I like the Nomos quality and wholeheartedly agree that a watch should not be plain and ordinary. Love your design at the end which is neither plain nor ordinary!
Beautiful analysis. I just bought the tetra neimatik. It blends the traditional with a super modern square dial. I think it’s worth looking at and incorporates the ideas you mention in your videos
Holy cow, I'd hire you! I think you summarized something important. The brand is looking for under the radar business art. But what you are proposing is an artistic statement. The numerology in your design, 5 blue circles, 4 red squares, 3 yellow triangles with the largest on top, serves to tie parts of the day together and make ingenious associations between them. It reminds me of a recent synthesizer from the German company jomox, a beautifully adorned piece which emulated neural feedback. Neuronium was the name I think. Hugely expensive and only a handful made. I wish I had more money, and more time.
i got my hands on one of the Orion deStils from ACE Jewellers in Amsterdam. One of the watches that will stay forever in my collection. I just love it. Great vid, as always.
This was superb. One of the better watch related videos I've seen in a while. Question for you: How much of Japanese minimalism was Bauhaus inspired by? Did the minimalist movement truly take form after the Bauhaus school, or did influence trickle into the west earlier from Japanese aesthetic ideals?
Thank you so much, man! I could've gone on and on, but it would have gotten out of hand haha! It is amazing when you stand back and think about everything we see around us. Such a huge proportion is linked to the Bauhaus history and it is incredible how well it has endured into our modern age. Again, I really appreciate the support and your comment, it means so much.
The thumbnail of this video shows a Nomos glashutte neomatik with colorful shapes as the hour markers. Does anyone know the reference or a name I can look up to find this variant. Any help is appreciated thank you
when i saw the thumbnail i was like "whoa cool watch ..... waiiit i haven't seen that particular nomos before " NOMOS hire this man , i need that watch
Excellent video. Your thoughts on the Club from a design perspective, especially the newer colors (also in the Ahoi) that seem to provide a bit of playfulness?
I have been following NOMOS for perhaps the best part of a decade. Not actually buying one, primarily because there is not good access to try on in person where I live. I'm here today watching more information on them because the other day I saw the Ahoi in the Siren Bleu, in person. I will say this without reservation. One of the greatest watch dials I have seen. Without consideration to price. Simply outstanding. I am not sure it's versatile enough for me to own at that price point given my age, but in all honesty - it might be worth the 6 month wait @ nomos just to get it. It is THAT good IMHO.
Thanks for a great introduction into the Nomos brand. I would have liked for you to mention the other watch brands such as Junkers and Junghans. Granted they are not as pricey as Nomos, but they also follow the Bauhaus design principal.
Excellent. I love the way you evaluate the risks and opportunities. Just as there are great examples of Bauhaus descended designs, we know of the bad ones, like many office buildings that become sterile. Even brutalist can be beautiful and compelling, or it can be just ... brutal. I like the way Nomos is playing with color. I still wrestle with cost, but that applies to the watch industry in general.
It should be noted that NOMOS give the "Deutscher Werkbund" as their inspiration which existed some years before the actual Bauhaus. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutscher_Werkbund Edit: here's a quote from their homepage that I found: "Of course, NOMOS Glashütte is traditionally cautious when it comes to complications: The NOMOS designers believe in the guidelines of the Deutscher Werkbund, they like to keep the dials clean and the cases slender-and complications tend to take up a lot of space in both. So, any complication needs to be reinvented before it becomes suitable for a NOMOS watch. "
Fell in love with Bauhaus during my college years; I love Nomos but it would be great if they pushed the idea of the dress watch. I was happy to see a 200 m WR Watch look like the new Ahoi though. Their design for a monthly calendar is equally impressive. I hope they build off those designs.
Well, haven’t you seen their Autobahn from 2018 Baselworld? That’s exactly what you talk about, a daring design, but people didn’t know if they should like it or not and I doubt it sold much. What do you make of it?
I’m just loving these engineering and design insights, IDGuy. A fitting tribute to Bauhaus’ 100th anniversary. Regarding Bauhaus frontrunners, do you consider Vienna Secession artists such as Otto Wagner to be influences? BTW, if not for Dieter Rams, I would argue there would be no Jony Ive as we know his work today.
You are a learned man indeed! The Vienna Secession was absolutely a frontrunner (and the Dutch De Stijl movement just fascinates me as it happened around the same time as Bauhaus) Its a fascinating part of our history. I have been thinking about mentioning these periods in more detail with some videos just to help build the movements around the products of the time. Want to know the irony about Rams and Ive? I decided to study Industrial Design after watching Ive being knighted...so it really is generational. I know that my generation aims to mimic Ive, but I always base most of my initial work on Rams. His choice of materials, colours etc. were so vibrant. He is the OG and his work excites me much more. Oh, and yes, the proof of copycatting is so clear in Ive's work (he often credits Rams too and it's clear that he was his biggest inspiration) Thanks for the great comments as always, man!
IDGuy If I am understanding you correctly, is your argument that Nomos has captured the industrial design traits of Bauhaus, but not the artistic spirit of the school in being avant garde and trend setting, rather than being more mainstream? Nomos to me seems to be arriving within this current trend of Bauhaus nostalgia, while also incorporating cornerstones of legitimized watchmakers (unlike say, Daniel Wellington). My concern is they may not stay afloat if this Bauhaus nostalgia trend fades away, and they do not introduce something radically new to the table, which is capable of being self sustaining should people no longer show interest in Bauhaus retro. By the way, the Bauhaus melding of academia and industry seems similar to Stanford University’s electrical engineering department, and its relationship with transistor, radio and vacuum tube manufacturing firms based out of San Francisco. Fascinating story of how you were inspired to become an industrial designer. I love Ive’s designs, and IMO it was right of him to give credit to Rams. To me, Ive’s opus magna of iPhone designs is the 4. No iPhone touches the iPhone 4’s beauty, and I don’t think any will in the future. That being said, I’m not a fan of Jony’s leadership in iOS design. I think iOS has never run as it should, even since Scott was sacked.
For an interesting take on Bauhaus I suggest Tom Wolfe's book "From Bauhaus to Our House". The ideological roots of the Bauhaus movement are quite interesting. If Corbusier were alive today he would absolutely demand that you never mod your Nomos.
Hi ID Guy, Thank you for creating such excellent content, I have been following you for quite some time now and cannot stop! My suggestion for a topic I think everyone may find worthwhile would be for you to show us how to mod watches as you have done with some of the watches in your previous videos (i.e. how to brush steel to give a brushed finish (bezel or lugs..) etc...). Please do let me know what you think. Thanks again for sharing all your content with us!
Thank you, Scott! Look into Nomos further, they really are such a unique brand in the industry and the amount they have been able to do in such a short period of time is phenomenal. Thanks for the support, man!
@@ID-Guy it looks great! But since you mentioned legibility in the video, as some may have troubles reading the time on the watch you designed, how would you have further integrated/improve legibility into the design? Would you redesign the watch instead? Just curious your about opinion.
You’re videos carry a unique versatility in that they are extremely entertaining, but could also be played in the background if in need of assistance to fall asleep.
So...did Nomos purposefully, from the inception of their company, use Bauhaus as a selling point in their marketing? The general public obviously makes the connection, but does Nomos? And if they do now, did they always?
I really enjoy your channel. I just recently purchased a Rolex Explorer 2 Polar 216570. I would love for you to do a video on this very "polarizing" watch.
Oh, I cannot wait to sink my teeth into Explorers! They all deserve their own videos and I promise to cover them methodically when the time comes. There is just so much content to add in the meantime, but they will be on my list. In fact, the Polar explorer will be first. (I personally think it is a gorgeous watch) Thanks for the comment man and continue to wear the piece in good health!
Thank you so much! FYI I also own and adore an Explorer 214270 Mk1. It flies under the radar and can be both sporty and dressy. I call it “almost the perfect watch”. Thanks again!
In the thumbnail I thought that was a cool looking watch, and maybe I should check it out. Imagine my disappointment to find out my favorite Nomos design doesn't even exist! I've never been partial to their watches and that was the first one that did it for me.
Great video, especially helping me understand the history of BH design. I have recommended Nomos to many friends. However, I still cannot bring myself to buy one. There are two reasons for myself. 1) I find that I would become bored with the design, and I would eventually move it out of the collection. Simplicity is nice, but I want something that I also feel compelled to stare at all day long. I think their midnight blue offerings would bring me the closest. I like watches that I can become lost in -- I'm not sure that I would lose myself in any of their current designs. 2) The price point is a double edged sword. I love that they are true German inside and out. They don't pretend like some of the Swatchgroup owed brands. However, I also don't see them as a prestigious or luxury brand. They are a people's brand, very accessible. I would personally prefer to save for a Lange and know I have something very special on my wrist. I just do not feel that Nomos has that special or "X" factor to it.
Great video, thanks so much. I am a huge fan of Nomos, I own the Orion (my absolute favorite), a Tangomat and a Tangente GMT. I completely agree with you, that Nomos should experiment a little more, like in your colourful examples at the end. Why dońt you just send them this video and apply? All the best!
I get the design ethos, but saying that you find reading time on the tangente difficult is bit of a stretch. It's practically a wall clock on your wrist!
Clicked on the video because of the thumbnail, put the video in the background and frantically started trying to figure out which model it is only to find that it is a rendition of what could be.
heck you've hit a home run and if they won't do it , why not set up a go fund me, it has elements of Miro, Nomos obviously, a great blend of color, just brilliant I hope someone see it at Nomos
Am I crazy or is Nomos already doing the things suggested in the video? They are Bauhaus, yes, but they already are colourful, playful and experimental. Even some of the pieces shown in this video fit the bill; the Metro, the Weltzeit, the Autobahn (just to name a few) Which other watch manufacturer makes anything that looks like these? To be frank, I don't know what you're getting at.
Stay one month or one year until you finish your best design and send it to Nomos. Then your dream might come true. I gave up trying to be a part of Triumph design team because at that time I didn't have enough patience.
Non of the other “Bauhaus” inspired brands you showed come close to the pure, functional beauty of the Nomos design ascetic. I thought your ideas were really nice but too playful without a specific reason or intrinsic meaning. The thumbnail is what brought me to your video as I was a little shocked that Nomos would have designed something with that amount of frivolity! Interesting video and great presentation though.
Great video about Bauhaus and its core design elements/specifics. I especially like that you pointed out that most of the Bauhaus school is present in today's everyday life and also with other non-Bauhaus watch manufacturers. I like most of these other designs which are not as conformative (law-abiding) as Nomos. With the help of your video I realized why I don't like Nomos' watches. They are too technical, too industrial, too delicate, too unnatural for my liking. Lifeless so to speak.
Great video, but I'd rather see you come up with your own design rather than go for a botched Orion. Nomos is true to the Bauhaus ideology, and yes sometimes play it a bit safe with their design. However, Nomos have mastered their approach, and that's what made a fan of theirs.
I like Stowa better then Nomos Stowa also as other historical pieces aside from bauhaus. definitely worth checking out. i have a Stowa marine classic and i am very impressed with the quality and finishing. good price/quality ratio
If nomos reading my comment, I can help you get rid of small second on 6, creating new line "just time". because I like Nomos but I hate that small second.
Very Interesting and you are right when you expect from a brand which is based on the Bauhaus ideas and ideals to be more joyful and experimental ... . A good example for being this and priced very basic is Imme Watch... . Having now a Kickstarter campaign for a very joyful designed Regulator watch... Playing with this Marine Chronometer theme (minutes from the center - hours and seconds from a subdial) and trying to reduce it to the essence without losing a bit of an eye twinkle and self Ironie is something I love at this watch and why I backed it... . Here’s the link to the campaign: www.kickstarter.com/projects/imme/automatic-watch-modern-minimalistic-and-original-d
Hahaha! I knew there would be comments on the intro ;) I've really been thinking through it and wanted the whole process of drawing, assembly, function and use covered in a short frame of time. It will probably be refined in the future though. As always, thanks for the comment, Anton!
Prefer your designs. For me Nomos are a bit bland & boring, like expensive Daniel Wellington's. But to each their own. Excellent video as always, Cheers 👍
Utterly brilliant video. I am a huge Nomos fan and so the biggest compliment I can pay you is that I would buy your Nomos design in a heartbeat! Nomos, if you are reading, sign him up.......

That watch design at the end was so clean I started looking for it on the nomos website before I realized you created it. Great design broski

Amazing explanation of Bauhaus mentality in design. I do love my Nomos just for this.

By the way, the Bauhaus melding of academia and industry seems similar to Stanford University’s electrical engineering department, and its relationship with transistor, radio and vacuum tube manufacturing
firms based out of San Francisco.
Another first-rate video. Helps to better understand where Nomos have been and where they are going...or should go? Cheers
For an interesting take on Bauhaus I suggest Tom Wolfe's book "From Bauhaus to Our House". The ideological roots of the Bauhaus movement are quite interesting. If Corbusier were alive today he would absolutely demand that you never mod your Nomos.
Hi ID Guy,
Thank you for creating such excellent content, I have been following you for quite some time now and cannot stop!
Nice video. Well done. I never heard of these brands, Not for me. but enjoyed seeing your video.
Thank you, Scott! Look into Nomos further, they really are such a unique brand in the industry and the amount they have been able to do in such a short period of time is phenomenal. Thanks for the support, man!
Well done! Would love to hear more about bauhaus design and others. Which model is that Laurent Ferrier?
If the watch in the last shot were on the market in 38mm (and around 1000 euro), I'd buy it today!
sternglas has made a similar limited edition using those same geometric forms, althought without the colors. looks splendid i should say.
Very informative, is the watch on the thumbnail real?
Find out at the end of the video. I was wondering as well. Hope it will be real one day :p
I'm dying to make it real. It would be such a privilege! And thank you as always for your comments, man!
@@Sammeeee Thank you, man! It would definitely spark a different route for my career (and I'd welcome it)
@@ID-Guy it looks great! But since you mentioned legibility in the video, as some may have troubles reading the time on the watch you designed, how would you have further integrated/improve legibility into the design? Would you redesign the watch instead? Just curious your about opinion.
I would wear that watch design at the end. I’m also currently shopping for a NOMOS Club Date
You’re videos carry a unique versatility in that they are extremely entertaining, but could also be played in the background if in need of assistance to fall asleep.
I love the last watch! Omg!
Cool!!. Best from Spain.
Gracias mi amigo!! Thank you for your support, man!
I like your design for the watch dial, that looks like something Calder would have designed.
How about a Junghans review?
Is the watch in the thumbnail real? I love it!
Thanx IDGuy for the long intro....Now I understand ...
In the thumbnail I thought that was a cool looking watch, and maybe I should check it out. Imagine my disappointment to find out my favorite Nomos design doesn't even exist! I've never been partial to their watches and that was the first one that did it for me.
Great video
have an AP and my nomos still holds it's own.
I'd love if Nomos released your designs
Those colored shapes would look really nice if they were raised/applied to the dial!
Funny, at 1:09 I spotted a photo of mine of NY :)
heck you've hit a home run and if they won't do it , why not set up a go fund me, it has elements of Miro, Nomos obviously, a great blend of color, just brilliant I hope someone see it at Nomos
The design is a take off of the Junghans 100 only made 1,000 copyies.I like this.
Dear NOMOS, please hire that guy. ;-)
I have a Metro and love it. The others I don't care for. I can't tell you why though.
Oh yeah, nice rendition ID! I would buy that model. (Nomos, are you listening?)
Amazing!!! I think those companies should hire you and pay you a lot of.money ... you would know how to make good products into great products.
Well said.
i’d buy your versions
lol that watch is like a circle in a triangle factory meme
I like Stowa better then Nomos
Stowa also as other historical pieces aside from bauhaus.
definitely worth checking out. i have a Stowa marine classic and i am very impressed with the quality and finishing. good price/quality ratio
If nomos reading my comment, I can help you get rid of small second on 6, creating new line "just time". because I like Nomos but I hate that small second.
WoW.
Playing with this Marine Chronometer theme (minutes from the center - hours and seconds from a subdial) and trying to reduce it to the essence without losing a bit of an eye twinkle and self Ironie is something I love at this watch and why I backed it...
.
Here’s the link to the campaign:

Very good video. Use a better microphone though.
As a matter of fact write to me I would like to collaborate with you ...
As an eccentric, Bauhaus is the complete opposite of my style. But great video.
👌👌👌👌👌👌👌
Hey if you made your intro a tad shorter it would flow a lot better. Think of the bauhaus rules of design ;)
Hahaha! I knew there would be comments on the intro ;) I've really been thinking through it and wanted the whole process of drawing, assembly, function and use covered in a short frame of time. It will probably be refined in the future though. As always, thanks for the comment, Anton!
No man Anton you are wrong .. If he did un idiot in the subject like me will never understand and learn..Thanx for the long intro...
If you know you know
Prefer your designs. For me Nomos are a bit bland & boring, like expensive Daniel Wellington's. But to each their own. Excellent video as always, Cheers 👍
