Two of the best entry doors into German watchmaking are Junghans and NOMOS, who both take a lot of inspiration from the Bauhaus School of Design. However, given the often substantial price jump between the brands, it can be challenging to understand the tangible differences between the watches themselves. In this video, we'll do an in-depth comparison of two of these brands' most popular models to see how their approaches to Bauhaus design language differ as well as taking a look at what you're really getting for your money in each instance.

Junghans, the design is so classical and timeless, very unique but discrete, it’s a work of art.
The Junghans is gorgeous and affordable..
I realize it is kinda randomly asking but does anyone know a good site to stream new movies online ?
@Ian Jadiel Thanks, signed up and it seems like a nice service :) I really appreciate it!
@Kayden Rylan no problem xD
I like the Junghans better. It has a cleaner design.
Random scamming going on here
Junghans and its dial design. I've always wanted a Nomos, but between these two Junghans draws me in more.
I have to agree.
Agreed. It's the most uniquuely designed of the two. For me, the highly domed crystal with the shallow dial beneath is the main attraction that sets it so far apart from other watches of our time.
Nomos has grown a lot in the past few years, can't say the same about Junghans, plus the inhouse movement and finishing is a win for nomos imo
The domed crystal on the Max Bill just makes it look more unique compared to the Nomos in my opinion
i think its plexiglass
The Nomos is domed too.
@@ssslovak47 It is (not). There are 2 versions (the sapphire glass version is more expensive).
I love NOMOS for it's club designs and the fun dials they offer. I love junghans for it's minimalism of it's designs (not just max bill but the Meister line as well). Both are great value for the money, but I don't have that money yet.
Same here haha
@@tttdlll Junghans has 500 chrono version. Beautiful watch, check it out.
What ia fun about that Nomos dial
@@paulhopkins1905 He is talking about the NOMOS "Club Campus" dial
@@Lucky.123 ok, whats fun about that dial
I appreciate you syncing the seconds hand on both watches! Been eyeing the Orion for a while, about to pull the trigger on it as a graduation gift to myself
About to reach my one year anniversary with my Nomos Orion. I honestly can’t appreciate Teddy enough for being the one to start my lust for a Nomos watch when he used to talk about a lot
If you get a chance check out Junkers. I did a review on my channel. THE WATCH MONKEY
@@canadianwatchmonkey3992 Junghans is much better than Junkers. In germany cheap jewelers sell Junkers. There is no Tradition und innovation, and the watches are without a soul. So take laco, much better
@@totaltime7804 Huh? The junkers I purchased was on par with Junghans. Check out my review on Bauhaus design watches on my UA-cam channel “ THE WATCH MONKEY”
@@canadianwatchmonkey3992 okay, dann ist das an uns Deutschen wohl total vorbei gegangen

Adding chapters would be great! Keep up the good work, Teddy!
Love Junghans. I have the Max Bill Chronoscope, and admire it daily...the design, proportions, and numerals, are all wonderfully sophisticated. It somehow embodies the very best of mid-century aesthetics, in the most beautiful and unpretentious way.
The finishing of the Nomos is beyond comprehension, just so much to look at while so little on dial. Junghans for me is amazing design nod to it's own history and history of Bauhaus. Thanks for this video, it really helped to shape my point of view re these models!
Happy to help. I know these two brands get lumped together quite a bit and the price is typically the driving factor, but there are other elements at play too. Thanks for watching!
Yes. Pictures don't do justice to either of these watches - you have to see them in real life to fully appreciate them. The Nomos dial is unbelievably sharp and clear with the gold markings and blued hands. I like both of them but, for me, the Nomos is perfection.
I prefer the Nomos. My 35mm Nomos Orion looks so simple yet classy under the cuffs of a tuxedo shirt and dinner jacket.
I also enjoy the fact that it has drilled lug holes which make switching out straps a breeze!
I hate smashing up the side of the lug and the edge of a nice strap trying to take out a spring if it has no lug holes.
The Max Bill was definitely one addition I had in my giveaway entry!
I have the Junghans Max Bill and love it. And Teddy, this is a superb video! Very well done indeed; thanks for putting it out!
In 2019 I bought one of the 1000 copies of the bauhaus 100th anniversary edition. I love it.
I just received my new 38mm Junghans Max Bill Automatic. It’s my new favorite watch. Incredible design. A truly classic and beautiful watch.
I bought the Max Bill Automatic from you. It is my current favorite watch! :)
I was doing some Junghans research just last night so this video came along at the perfect time!
Your excellent review aside, can I just say that your pronounciation of "Junghans" is spot on? You must the first watch youtuber to nail the short "u".
And "Bauhaus" is pronounced just like "Bowhouse" with a sharper s at the end :)
I own the Junghans Max Bill, I tried on the Orion 38 - I liked both. To me, the Orion is "smart" whereas the Junghans is "smart casual". I find the Max Bill would work with a pair of chinos, desert boots, heavy shirt and wool jacket - whereas the Nomos only works with a dark blue suit and crisp white shirt.
Two classy, top notch watches, and the dial of the Junghans keeps drawing my attention.
That little purple pin and gold clip on the Nomos balance wheel is hard not to drool over.
Big fan of both of these brands. Great video and the information you share.
Was this video custom made for me?? These are the brands I've been comparing lately
Even the smaller hand wound movement version of the Junghans is very nice, especially on a smaller wrist
I highly recommend seeing both brands in person and trying them on (this holds true for all watches to be honest). Seeing these on screen doesn't do them justice. After visiting my local dealer, and trying on several NOMOS, I surprised myself by preferring the Club Campus ref 737 more than the Tangente and Orion.
I have the Junghans Max Bill and I really love it, Congrats on your great job !! Love your videos warm regards from sunny Mexico !!!
I have a smaller budget and settled with the FORM C, couldn't be much happier!
I'm getting one of these for my fiance for an engagement gift. He put both of these on his list of potentials so thank you for the in-depth look at both of them!
In the last few days the Watchfinder channel made videos on both the Junghans and Nomos watches. It was enlightening. It was shocking to see the lack of fit and finish on the Junghans. I used to be torn between these two watchmakers but after watching these videos I am now convinced. Nomos is qualitatively better.
Put my money down and have owned the Nomos datum version of this watch now for 7 years and love it !
Both are really beautiful watches. I think what would be really interesting would be an extended review of both. Wear each one for about a month and tell us your impressions. How is the legibility of both watches? Does the bezelless crystal of the Junghans end up taking a beating? Do the longer lugs of the Nomos affect wearability in the long run? They are such iconic watches, it would be great to see them put through their paces, so to speak.
It would have to be the Junghans, with the lume just looks epic on the dial, and I love the space that is there, it just looks cleaner to me!
Good morning watch fam! Looking at a Nomos so great timing Teddy thank you!
Thanks for watching! Hope the video helps with your decision!
@@TeddyBaldassarre wassup teddy!!! 😎✌️
@@kingadjust5422 Hey man, thanks for watching as always!
For the price it’s Junghans all over. But Nomos and it’s manufactured calibres are an incredible stylish approach at horology.
Absolutely simple yet elegant timepieces😍
Don't want to choose one, I want them both😋 😂
Love ur vids Teddy! Keep posting such beautiful content for us!!
Thanks for the support Rohan! 🙌🏻
- Which of the 2 watches I would go for?
- Both of them/any of them (l love German minimalism and their craftsmanship)
Thank you much, another great episode, thumb up as usual
Max Bill (by far) imo, but a Nomos is very respectable and a great piece.
Not a fan of the design but if I was I'd go for Junghans with a sapphire crystal. I like the history and tradition there Also I wouldn't mind putting the blue Nomos hands on it! Nomos also has good selling points too.
I love both of these! Although I’m gonna have to lean more towards the Junghans because of the dial design, price and functionality. It’s more legible to me, than the Nomos dial. Although! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the Nomos because of the exhibition case back, the in-house movement and finish! It’s absolutely beautiful! I could see myself staring at the movement all the time! They’re both awesome!
Thank you for the video Teddy!
Appreciate the history of Junghan Taking a different look at the brand Leaning towards Junghan Love Mom is movement however doesn't justify that big a price difference Keep up good work on under exposed brands
Punctuation is our friend.
Junghans for me. I had this same dilemma some time back, but in the end Nomos seemed more generic whereas there is just one Max Bill.
I just bought the Nomos and I'm now looking for the Junghans. They both fit the purpose.
I think you are right to say these are apples and oranges. I see the Max Bill as a smart casual watch and the Orion as a dress watch. Both are high on my to-buy list - great overview!
While talking about Junghans max bill and putting it into my bucket list, one of my artist friend asked me why do I want this watch so much. The pictures I have showed him looked simple and generic, which didn't interest him. Luckily, we were near to a watch shop and guess which one was in the preview? - yes, it was Junghans Max Bill! My friend instantly liked it.
I love Nomos as a brand and like what they're doing with their in house movements and escapements but in terms of visual appeal, Junghans has them beat. I can't take my eye off any of their watches. Even their pilot watch like the Junghas Meister Pilot looks so elegant. I think the Max Bill collection of watches is THE dress watch folks should look if you're in the market for one.
Really can't go wrong with either of these watches. I can't decide between the two and will more than likely end up grabbing both in the future.
Great vid, audio seemed soft for some reason on this one.
If I preferred this style of watch, it would be the Junghans just because I have a really small wrist. I otherwise like the styling of the Nomos a bit better.
Nomos takes influence from Bauhaus and Max Bill, where as the Junghans Max Bill (as the name suggest) was designed by Max Bill and is pure Bauhaus. Junghans is the real deal, Nomos is the modern interpretation. Junghans all the way for me, would rather have the original, but that takes nothing away from Nomos who make some nice watches too.
🎆 Junghans 🎇🎇✨
Very happy with the 2 Junghans Meister series watches in my collection. Both watches look better in person compared to photos. Quality and accuracy are top notch.
Very nice comparison between two great brands. For my personal taste, my favorite is Nomos, but Junghans is also a great brand.
I think the Max Bill should really be compared to NOMOS other offering, the Tangente. The appearance and price are a little closer to each other vs the Orion. I understand Teddy was demonstrating the difference between mid-century design with the Junghans, vs the modern design of the NOMOS. Full disclosure, I have an Orion Neomatik 175yr edition, and it is incredible. The finishing is astonishing, and a very good value for a dress watch. Thanks again Teddy for a great video.
Lots of fashion brands copy Nomos. However, I have not seen a Junghans Bauhaus copy yet. It is just that unique.
The Junghans is definitely my grail for the next few years. Especially the 38mm automatic version with saphire glas. However, because they just recently added a saphir version you can only find it on retail and 1200 € is too much for me at the moment.
I will still try to get one under 1000. Let the hunt begin
Some cheaper German brands (e.g. Junkers) copy this style.
Awesome presentation of those classic watches! I just love the Max Bill's design, in my opinion it's the most beautiful watch out there! Traditional and classy without the need of any bling, elegant with its curves, very readable while still staying minimal, and it's a true original with an amazing history. The Nomos also looks very classy, but at least this Orion with its golden accents on the dial wouldn't be my style. I like the slim case, the long lugs not so much, but it all fits very nicely together and I get why many people (and copycats) love it.
That Junghans is breathtaking.
The Nomos is a very nice watch.
Hi Teddy, in my search for buying a new watch I came across this video. The video really opened my eyes for the Junghans. I ended up buying the 34mm handwinder and wow… Owning the watch for three weeks now and constantly gazing to my wrist. Unfortunately I did not buy it in your shop (because of taxes and things like that) but at my local jewelry store. Thanks for the inspiration and keep up the good work.
I want to buy the max bill hand winding, isn t it too small ? I mean isn t it made for woman ??? I love it amd I think I ll buy it anyway…
@@zos09 I own some larger watches as well (e.g. the Seiko pressage) and have large wrists. I do still not find it small at all. It's after 2 years still my go to watch on most days and it helps me to get compliments on my watch on a weekly base ;-)
@@dstolker Glad to hear that, I just bought it 30 minutes ago…It s cool though I have had a big Huawei smart, now it s like there is nothing on my wrist.. : ) I ll have to buy another strap though, the original is …I prefer black ..
Nomos lugs too long for me. Also, the small seconds dial is a little distracting. They are nice watches, just not for me. Max Bill is understated elegance.
First!!!!!! Also, I prefer Junghans because they are more reasonably priced, and they look more unique...
For what it is Nomos is probably more reasonably priced i think
The Orion looks dope!

Thanks for diving into the Bauhaus design movement. You are excellent at what you do as well - I've been collecting watches since 1976 ... got my Tony the Tiger watch as a kid!
Bro I NEEDED this video to guide a friend on a purchase. 💯
Teddy with the perfect timing. ⌚
Thanks for watching Adam!
Seems like the Meister Handwound is the better direct comparison to the Orion - both have no numerals on the dial, both hand wound 7001 vs alpha. that would get the thicknesses closer and have comparable case backs. I think design-wise, the max bill is closer to the Club as it straddles the dress vs. sport line very well
I think a Junghans Meister Classic would have been a better comparison to the Nomos Orion.
Adding chapters will definitely help navigating long videos!
We typically add them for non review videos but we can start doing it more
Just want to say that the editing of this video is excellent. Those rapid-fire cuts at 0:54 along with the audible ticking caught my attention. Certainly some effort went into that one! Nice work, Teddy.
I go back and forth. I thought I prefer Nomos but now I will choose Junghans Max Bill no date over Nomos Ludwig.
The nomos does it for me. The blued hands might be the decider.
Bought the Junghans and when I got it I decided it just felt too cheap to me even though I liked the design. I ended up giving it to a friend and buying a Nomos. Much better.
cheap why? how nomos you think is much better? thank you!
I have been looking at both of these brands, as well as Sternglas. I think the Sterglas Naos Automatik might be a good entry watch since I am a newbie in the watch world.
Junghans definitively!!
I own a 34mm hand-wound Max Bill and a Orion Neomatik. I do like both of them, just very rarely wear them.
My Grandpa has a Nomos watch and he is very happy with it.
Thank you for not just saying "it's Bauhaus" - drives me nuts when it's used a synonym for generalized minimalism
The cherry blossom pink Junghans Max Bill hand-wind in 34mm is the best version imo. Would love to get that one someday.
Nomos, of course
Good video Teddy. Combine the Junghan’s dial and hands, and the Nomos’ movement and open case back....winner!
I’m a huge fan of NOMOS and Junghans. I own the club date and the Junghans Meister Telemeter
This video’s volume is so low that when the ads pop up, I have been diagnosed with hearing loss
I like the Junghans
I would wear a watch like this in formal settings where mood lighting is quite likely. The lume on the Junghans is so tastefully done. Minimal but attractive. The Nomos apparently doesn't have lume at all. So I'd spend a ton of money on a watch and in dark lighting I would have to look at my phone. That's embarrassing.
Both these exact watches have been on my radar for some time.
Both beautiful watches, but choose the Junghans max bill and love it.
Making a video comparing acrylic vs. Sapphire would be very helpful.
Comparing the exact same Junghans watch with both watch crystals. Shape, dimensions, color, durability, how they're installed and what affect both crystals have on the looks of a dial. Unfortunately there's not many brick-and-mortar stores anymore so most of our shopping is online, and pictures cannot describe what the human eye can see. Thank you for your content and I hope you consider my suggestion.
It is a pity that most Junghans' models are not used sapphire for the glass.
Some of their Max Bills are switching to sapphire now! The silver and white Bauhaus Max bill is sapphire. So happy because that is the one I absolutely want to save for
Starting to come around on the German watches. Thank you, Teddy.
Thanks for putting the sizes in context
I really need to turn up the volume on this video, is it just me?
Not just you. The commercial in between was almost twice as loud.
Junghans watches are as good as Glashütte watches. Watchmaking has a great tradition in Schwarzwald. When the first Mega Solar with ceramic and elektroniks for example opening a door, was released I worked at the advertising agency there and I made the 3D model for the catalog showing the watch in its parts. I still have a print of this 😊
I’m not formal at all. I’m the opposite actually, so neither of these is for me.
I can appreciate the quality of them though!
Youndont have to be formal for thjs watch.
The reedition of Max Bill kitchenclock is comming later this year. Won’t suit the wrist but will look great on the kitchen wall ;)
You sound very quiet on this.. had to turn volume to max.. also love the design of both especially the Junghans.
The max Bill.is love at 1st sight.I will buy 1.thanks
Ok, so the Junghans Max Bill Chrono movement (J880.2) can be considered loud. Do I assume correctly that the non-chrono version of this watch (with J880.1) will ALSO produce the same amount of noise? It would be very bad news.
These watches seem a bit overpriced, considering the quality of finish and simplicity of movement, however the exceptional asthetics compensate that. But with the noise, it seems too much problem for the amount of money.
I couldn't decide between these two watches, so I bought both, thinking that I'll just sell the one I like less.
.
..
Fast forward 2 years and I still have both watches. I love them and just can't get myself to sell either of them.
I love the technical stuff in Nomos and the full in house culture, but they need.to step.the game from the subsidiary seconds and bring some more comps....
I own both watch brands. Love them both
Both brands are solid - Nomos is higher quality and has a more high end feel in my opinion as indicated by its prices.
As an Austrian, so a German speaking Person, it pains me to hear you say German names, but I love your reviews!
Literally waiting on my new Junghans Max Bill hand wind to get delivered today. Next up is a Nomos Tetra!
How are you enjoying it? As good as you had hoped for?
