Great video and analysis of the Lange 1, it's actually one of my favourite watches! I would also add that the center of the hour hand, second hand and date form a perfect equilateral triangle.. perfect design. In opposition, the Glashutte Panoreserve tried to copy this concept but the proportions and placement of dials are all over the place!

First rule of photography also I understand is the the placement or positioning of the product or subject matter into thirds as well - not that I have ever done this, but I talk with my team & I am always interesting in learning these things. I bought my first A Lange & Sohne at dinner they invited me to, feeling the weight of pressure to join the club, just the 1815 model (the cheapest in the range) after that they kept sending me books, gift & gave me the whole VIP Experience. I have a BIG wrist 7.5", so I need to be wearing a statment piece when doing business, so I have since purchased several models & the one things that appeals to me is the thing that most people dislike the most from this brand depending on the model - the LARGE NUMERALS.

@@ID-Guy I have a few acquisitions in play ATM & have just recovered from major surgery in April, so life has been a little crazy - but will drop you a note soon as I have a project for you, maybe two. I am based between LA, Florida, Paris & Sydney. Once I get some free time, I am planning on finishing my private office or war room to work out of in Paris which will house half my collection in a library style format with but with rows of custom walls built from watch winders, a wall paying homage to the humble SWATCH (made from SWATCH watches), a art installation made up of all my watch boxes from the watches I have purchased, my Banksy art collection & a few other very unique aspects. My LA home will also effectively be my private office, but it is in 90210 which is more modern built home but themed around watches, wine, cigars also, but my insurance is different in the US to Europe. Once I am back in Paris, you can come down to stay in one of our properties for a week or two & do a documentary on the Europe collection, but I keep myself private & off camera - but we can meet face to face obviously.
@Founder Timless Capital - WOW!!! An IDGuy Cribs series!!! It sounds like you’ve got some beautiful properties, artwork and watches for us all to see. Let’s start in Paris and do the world tour! I really want to see this Paris review happen. I’m sure it would be fascinating my friend. ✊
Thumb's up for both using and understanding the Fibonacci spiral and sequence. It is simply natural perfection defined in human terms, and it always works!
It's taken this writeup to get me thinking more and more about the watch and there is definitely something about it that we can all appreciate (which is why I tried to establish the foundation of the brand first etc) but it was a lot of fun to put together and thank you for the comments as always! Have a superb weekend!
I usually don't like dress watches, but this one is stunning. If I were well off I would probably get this or something close to it. I think it's a great design. It is out of my reach but it is always fun to watch and look at them. Most dress watches to me are kind of boring. Also many are very delicate and servicing them can be costly. Thanks for the video. Nice job.
Totally agree Scott. I'm more interested in the Datograph if the opportunity presented itself (the design aesthetic of this piece doesn't appeal to me surprisingly) But I'm also with you about dress watches generally appearing too basic. Thank you for the excellent comments as always, man. Have a great weekend!
I hate to over use the word icon, especially for a modern watch... but it’s really hard not to with this piece. The Zeitwerk might have the accolades, the Datograph the most romantic movement, but the Lange 1 is still the quintessential Lange .
I need to stop using the word as often as I do...it is a very oxymoronic word, but the Lange 1...As a foundation of the brand it means something a lot more than most ;) I'm dying to discuss the Zeitwerk and the Datograph...Thanks for the comment, Marcus. Have a great weekend!
Well said, Diego. It's the "common aspiration watch" that I think links us all together. We all like dreaming too (so I guess that all factors in) Thanks for the comment, brother. Enjoy your weekend!
Diego OG we’ll see once they release a steel sport; the idea has already become fairly divisive I think. Regardless though it seems to be happening on the heels of the SeaQ so we will see what happens. Dress watch certainly aren’t dead but in an era of technology and practicality they also are being adopted on mass like tool watches (the ultimate tool watch being the Apple Watch so a watch that’s both mini computer and telephone all on your wrist). Funny thing is though that the most successful watches I would argue are the ones presently that combine function with form, or tool watch with beauty; see two tone Sea Dweller. Look forward to more on the Glashutte brands as GO and Lange I agree are loved so much more than not.
Timothy Glynn and that’s the question; the GO SeaQ will be running $10k as I understand and we’ll all see how that performs. The previous Sport Evolution line did not do well but I’d wager that the SeaQ will attract the vintage look crowd they’re pandering to. Thinking about it I’d say competing more inline but still under cutting the VC Overseas would position them above the $10k submariner crowd and attract the Trinity alternative crowd while enabling them to maintain quality.
Even though this Lange is not my style, I can appreciate the design cues that you drew all of our attention too. I am truly fascinated by your style as well as the amount of research that you put into each video. And, then you take it to the next level by reading and responding to nearly every comment provided. Totally Awesome!
Another great video on another great time piece or in this case a work of art. I appreciate the design and the time taken to achieve such a watch. Would I buy one, well perhaps I would but there is strong competition in dress watches but this would certainly make the top three. The other two on the list would be patek and jlc. I must admit that I'm a jlc watch fan. In my eyes they go under the radar and that is what a dress watch should do. Nice and elegant and only the wearer and a true watch fan knows what your wearing.. Look forward to your next video. In the meantime my hunt for the perfect 1655 goes on!👍
Fantastic! IDG, I haven’t seen all your videos but I’ve seen most and this is my favorite. To me it best embodies your good work so far. Now I see why you appreciated my comments to your Tudor Heritage Chrono S&G video and said I would like this upcoming video. I absolutely love it! I not only learned in greater detail about the rule of thirds I was also delighted when you unknowingly also touched on some of the very same points I had made in my Tudor comments, about perfection, imperfection and the difference between appreciation and personal preference. It’s nice when shared views emerge when one is also learning something. Mostly, I so enjoyed the breakdown of dial alignment and how each dial element individually occupies a third, or nearly so, of the dial space. Remarkable. I will be thinking about that for a while. In this video you’ve achieved your own element of balanced perfection. You’ve provided great information and perspective on history, design principles and touch on personal taste. How’s that for another rule of 3? Also, amidst all that great information I enjoyed the unintended irony when you correctly call the Lange 1 design timeless. It’s so appropriate yet can you imagine a world where it’s also complimentary to call a car “drive-less”? ;) Bravo! I will re-watch and enjoy this video each time. As always, keep the good work coming.
I knew you would have enjoyed the "perfection" angle, Meyer. Thank you! It was a blast to make and I hope to bring many, many more peculiar videos out in the future. Next week will be about Brando's GMT as a character in Apocalypse now...Seiko's design...perhaps another Rolex video or a Tudor video...it just doesn't stop. But I love it. The more I venture down this rabbit hole of watch design, the more I want to continue into the future with it. Thank you for your brilliant, insightful comments. And have a superb weekend!
I had heard about the elements of design before, but when you used the presentations to explain the principles of thirds and asymmetry, everything made sense. Thank you @IDGuy. If I were quite wealthy, I would buy a Zeitwerk, something exquisite from F. P. Journe, and a sexy piece from H. Moser & Cie.
The Lange 1 is a manual wind (but there are variants out there with automatic calibers) I'm not versed enough to give you a good suggestion of an automatic off the top of my head (since they enjoy manual wind movements with their pieces) but there are options. And the sizes range from about 40mm's to 37mm's for most of the pieces. They're all over google ;) Thanks for the comment!
I’ve own both A Lange and Patek and sold both. Let’s just say I’m buying one again and it’s not PP. A Lange is truly special. Hopefully this will cure my addiction!
No doubts there, Edward. It is a real work of art (and needs to be appreciated more by the broader community) Thanks for the comment, man! Have a great weekend
Informative as always! I also try to appreciate watches which my tastes don't accomodate (yet) and find your analyses to open new ways of looking at the selected pieces. So, thank you for that and now on to the Milgauss vid.
Thank you, Sony Toprano (loved your series) I'm always on the hunt to approach these subjects with a twist (like next week I'll be discussing Brando's GMT in a different way and the Newman Daytona) Have a great weekend
I know...The Datograph is much more of a watch up my alley (just because I enjoy the chronograph function and would most likely use it a lot) Maybe if money was no issue whatsoever, I'd consider buying Ben Clymer's Steel Lange 1, just for kicks ;)
Without a doubt it is in a league of its own and there is so much about them that can be appreciated. Swiss and German watches are in different hemispheres though (and I think their approaches forces the other side to continually innovate) Thanks for the comment, Maz! Have a superb weekend!
@@nishantprakash5928 Patek is always and has been number 1, are you referring to the drop in sales? Look at interviews with Stern a year back or so, they deliberately discontinued the hyped models at a risk off losing sales in the short run but maintaining a brand reputation for the long run. They are not a hype one model brand, Patek is a centuries old company, Lange just came in the picture.
Your best video yet! However, what you call "asymmetric" is really symmetric at a higher level of analysis (i.e., at the level of relationships between distal relationships): hence is not asymmetric at all. It is simply a richer and more complex type of symmetry. It is disappointing that you do not like this type of design.
I used to have the Lange 1 Moonphase model. It's beautiful, but I hated having to wind it every couple of days. Now you might be thinking "Why do you need to keep it wound?" Well, because I didn't want to have to keep resetting the moonphase. For me, everything on the watch has to be right. I can't just ignore the moonphase. The best two options for me are the non-moon phase version or the automatic version, but because I'm so used to seeing the layout of the manual wind version, I would have to go with that one. The automatic being opposite dial layout of the manual wind one just doesn't look right to me.
What are your thoughts on the the Lange 1 vs Glashute original panomatic lunar or the panoreserve? Compare and/or contrast the design language of the the two models. I like the Glashutte Original's date which I think is better than Lange's implementation. I think the proportions are the same. Thoughts? BTW another great video!
Another fantastic video, thank you! An off-topic question however: do you also happen to be the narrator for “The Day of the Dead Moon”? Your voice bears an uncanny resemblance to the man who narrated that story. I’ve been meaning to ask you this for some time. Thanks, Wes (fellow expat South African)
although it doesnt go along with my lifestyle... its undeniable that this is one hell of a dress watch that I wouldn't mind putting on my wrist. (I dress casual / sporty mostly)
The lang 1 is also a nice watch and if i had a lot of money i would get one , but since getting 2 Langs would be a dream my priority would be the Saxonia Moonphase or Ousize date (realistic choices) but my dream is the Zeitwerk or the Zeitwerk Date
I will be going into Glashutte in the future, definitely. They also approach asymmetry in a different way that deserves to be looked into. Thank you for the suggestion Timothy and have a great weekend!
@@ID-Guy The reason I come back to your videos is I can really feel the passion you have for horology, would love to see your channel grow big. I really appreciate you replying to my comment. Respect.
"perfect" is so very subjective 😉 obviously! My "perfect" watch at the moment is a Tissot T touch, because of its functionality & style - great tho A Lange craftsmanship may be but it'd be as much use as the proverbial chocolate tea pot to me. Personally I think nature does the Golden Ratio so much better than man can, we should stick to symmetry. Excellent video as always, thank you 👍👍
Nature will always triumph in this department (and I feel that we shouldn't have to try and emulate it) Maybe that's why I prefer simplicity over complex watches? Thank you for the great comments as always, brother. Have a great weekend!
Terrific presentation, this was nice to watch. I appreciate the esthetic composition and manufacturing excellence. But the sub dial for the time is less appealing to the reading glasses set.
What a wonderful video, as compared to John McManus’ latest video on what he calls ugly blue camouflage excrement. You and he are polar opposites. Sorry to sully your excellent channel with his name.
Mr Video man how do you mean you would not be interested in the Lange 1, Mr Video man the watch is absolutely beautiful , you need to find an Optician don't take that seriously I know we all have different taste , but I have looked at Audemars Piguet , Vacheron Constantin, Patek Philippe, Rolex, iwc schaffhausen, Hublot , Montblanc some of these Brands are very nice indeed , but the Germans got it correct with Lange 1 respect in every aspect.
I appreciate your design critique, but for me the Lange 1 is a fail. When I look down at my watch I expect the hour and minute hands to be centrally located. Anything else and I have to recalibrate, if ever so briefly. I love ALS, but I would choose a Saxonia Thin or an 1815 over the Lange 1 all day.
For me, I can appreciate the rear of the watch, the face whilst you were able to apply the Fabinacci rule. Is incongruent. If you can appreciate this approach Look up Lorne at Marine Chronometer who makes the Offshore Professional using the Fabonacci rule. The result is far more appealing than this watch, well for me anyway. I own an Offshore Professional, Milgauss GV and amongst others a Seiko Samurai Save the Ocean graduated blue dial. 👍🏻 Good review and like you, not for me. 👌🏻
I will definitely look it up and thank you for the suggestion, Michael. I can appreciate the watch, but the Lange 1 is a design that isn't for me. Thanks for the great comment, man and have a superb weekend!
IDGuy Glorious weather here for a change. So enjoying it. There’s a lot of information on the website, even available with a custom made Dangerous 9 strap made by John in Germany 👍🏻
If I were to spend tens of thousands of dollars on a dress watch, it would be from Geneve..... Many offerings from Vacheron Constantin, Patek Philippe, and Jaeger LeCoultre are more pleasing to my eye. It’s interesting that you seem to like these yet complain about dial spacing from other Brand/Models. Thanks for the work you do and enjoy your weekend.
I should have mentioned the word "order" more in the video. Proportions of badly spaced dials and ill sized cases bother me the most. Since this watch manages to use the space in a different way (and somehow manages to pull it off) it gets a pass (Glashutte Original on the other hand...they need a bit of scrutiny) But I agree that there are far more pleasing watches out there (The Datograph and Saxonia are on the top of my Lange list) but in the swiss hemisphere...the opportunities are endless. Have a superb weekend too, brother!
@@georgebeckford728 Yes I realize.....I meant Geneve as Holy Trinity, except AP doesn't thrill me so I substituted JLC and should have said "Also".... great catch, thanks!
I see where you're coming from. It doesn't make sense to not fill a dial with hands and numerals, but this approach is something unique. It's not my cup of tea either (but I enjoy learning a bit more everyday about the weird and wonderful world of watch design) Thanks for the comment, John (and for the coke can)

You opened my eyes on the Lange One. I never really liked the looks of it, but now at least I can see its beauty and appreciate this watch. Thanks
Thanks ! I love your content and will try to add to the growing word of mouth hype!
Congrats to 12.000 - slow but steady... hope it’s growing quicker now
Lange 1, Zeitwerk, Datagraph new trinity.
Give me a Datograph any day! And that's one hell of a video idea...thanks for the comment, Dale. Have a great weekend!
That is one beautiful piece. Thanks for the review.
Such a pleasure, Roger! Thank you for watching
I find A Lange & Sohne, seems to be the only manufacturer that "unites" all of us in this hobby... yet most of us, don't buy one 🤔
@@ID-Guy thank you sir, you do the same
@Timothy Glynn 10k might be too low for "Lange type" finish
Timothy Glynn and that’s the question; the GO SeaQ will be running $10k as I understand and we’ll all see how that performs. The previous Sport Evolution line did not do well but I’d wager that the SeaQ will attract the vintage look crowd they’re pandering to. Thinking about it I’d say competing more inline but still under cutting the VC Overseas would position them above the $10k submariner crowd and attract the Trinity alternative crowd while enabling them to maintain quality.
Man you killed it with this video. I TRULY enjoyed it. THANK YOU 🙏🏻
Lange 1 in rose gold is my grail. One day....
It’s so appropriate yet can you imagine a world where it’s also complimentary to call a car “drive-less”? ;)
Bravo!
I just love A. Lange & Söhne! Their watches are superb!
Do the datograph
bought it yesterday, can’t wait to go pick it up, would have appreciated if the retail was cheaper
Great video 👍 was wondering this is only a manual wind watch?
Iam looking for automatic a Lange & sohne any recommendation there is a smaller version?
Lange 1 Daymatic is its automatic version.
Superb take, man.. thank you.
Such a pleasure, Fredy! Thank you for watching!
The entire watch-loving world everywhere: "no one can make better watches than the Swiss!"
A. Lange & Sohne: "Hold my beer............."
It's a beautifuly balanced visual expression that happens to be a watch .
No doubts there, Edward. It is a real work of art (and needs to be appreciated more by the broader community) Thanks for the comment, man! Have a great weekend
@@ID-Guy You're welcome .
Excellent video. I loved the rule of third part. Keep em comin.
I cannot believe it that you won't get a Lange 1. If money if not an issue, I would definitely get one.
I know...The Datograph is much more of a watch up my alley (just because I enjoy the chronograph function and would most likely use it a lot) Maybe if money was no issue whatsoever, I'd consider buying Ben Clymer's Steel Lange 1, just for kicks ;)
Lange is no 1 and beats Patek and others by miles 👌 perfect is the middle name for this watch
Without a doubt it is in a league of its own and there is so much about them that can be appreciated. Swiss and German watches are in different hemispheres though (and I think their approaches forces the other side to continually innovate) Thanks for the comment, Maz! Have a superb weekend!
Hell no, Patek beats Lange by light years
@@frankv7068 this reply didn't age well lmao
@@nishantprakash5928 Patek is always and has been number 1, are you referring to the drop in sales? Look at interviews with Stern a year back or so, they deliberately discontinued the hyped models at a risk off losing sales in the short run but maintaining a brand reputation for the long run. They are not a hype one model brand, Patek is a centuries old company, Lange just came in the picture.
@@frankv7068 patek is only 6 years older than lange.
Lange stopped functioning because of WW2, otherwise it is also centuries old
It’s a masterpiece.Beautiful.
Outstanding video. Bravo!
Greatly appreciate, Tony! Thank you for watching and have a superb weekend!
Great video! Be interesting to hear your views on the Glashutte Original Panoreserve then… basically the same?
Interesting commentary, thank you
Thank you Jason. I hope that they will continue to become more and more engaging as time passes by. Have a great weekend!
Your best video yet! However, what you call "asymmetric" is really symmetric at a higher level of analysis (i.e., at the level of relationships between distal relationships): hence is not asymmetric at all. It is simply a richer and more complex type of symmetry. It is disappointing that you do not like this type of design.
Perfekt allein ist gut genug.
Another brilliant video!
Thank you Scott! It means the world to me that you can take the time out of your day to watch it. Have a great weekend, man
I used to have the Lange 1 Moonphase model.
I don’t know what it is but I love it.
Educational and inspiring video. Thanks
The moonphase on this makes it such a romantic piece
Fundamentally beutifull.
There is NO more trilogy. It is just Patek and A Lange & Sohne. Then there are the Independent brands that are higher.
I appreciate this watch and all it’s symmetrical complications. Would I wear it, NO I prefer simplicity
Hey bro. Could you consider taking a look at the grand seiko trade marks/ font and let us know your thoughts? I think it’s time for an update...
I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on H Moser & Cie, either their more traditional designs, or the, er, provocative ones.
Excellent video. Thank you
although it doesnt go along with my lifestyle... its undeniable that this is one hell of a dress watch that I wouldn't mind putting on my wrist. (I dress casual / sporty mostly)
Couldn’t understand why you think the Lange 1 design was heavy until I watched you video of the HM Streamliner and how you praised it...!
The lang 1 is also a nice watch and if i had a lot of money i would get one , but since getting 2 Langs would be a dream my priority would be the Saxonia Moonphase or Ousize date (realistic choices) but my dream is the Zeitwerk or the Zeitwerk Date
freakin cool breakup of that dial
Could you do a comparison between the Glasshutte original panomatic lunar and the Lange 1 in terms of design?
I will be going into Glashutte in the future, definitely. They also approach asymmetry in a different way that deserves to be looked into. Thank you for the suggestion Timothy and have a great weekend!
@@ID-Guy thanks! looking forward
Staggering personal conclusion in stark contrast to a proven principle of well balanced Gestalt that was well set out.
Lange depended a lot from JLC when it was first acquired by the same conglomerate
It was love at first sight for me.
Bravo!
Thank you. It was a blast to make! Have a great weekend
Excellent.
Great videos, just remember to breathe in between & slow down the pace...
Hahaha it's easier said than done (but its getting smoother by the day) Thanks for the comment, Amar ;)
@@ID-Guy The reason I come back to your videos is I can really feel the passion you have for horology, would love to see your channel grow big. I really appreciate you replying to my comment. Respect.
While speaking of the golden ratio, I like to say that the Langer is to visually heavy as well, it's not a big watch, but to many fingers in the pie,
"perfect" is so very subjective 😉 obviously!
Another great VLOG & content as always.
I must be getting fussy,but I wouldn’t thank you for that🤔
Mr Video man how do you mean you would not be interested in the Lange 1, Mr Video man the watch is absolutely beautiful , you need to find an Optician don't take that seriously I know we all have different taste , but I have looked at Audemars Piguet , Vacheron Constantin, Patek Philippe, Rolex, iwc schaffhausen, Hublot , Montblanc some of these Brands are very nice indeed , but the Germans got it correct with Lange 1 respect in every aspect.
This guy could do a great comedy routine showering wonderful superlatives on everyday items like toast and coffee 😂
I'm so going to do this! (it's been in the back of my mind for a while and its really worth exploring hahaha!) Thanks for the comment, man!
A wannabe wears a Rolex. A world leader wears a Lange, Putin agrees!
For me, I can appreciate the rear of the watch, the face whilst you were able to apply the Fabinacci rule. Is incongruent. If you can appreciate this approach
Look up Lorne at Marine Chronometer who makes the Offshore Professional using the Fabonacci rule. The result is far more appealing than this watch, well for me anyway. I own an Offshore Professional, Milgauss GV and amongst others a Seiko Samurai Save the Ocean graduated blue dial.
👍🏻
Good review and like you, not for me. 👌🏻
I will definitely look it up and thank you for the suggestion, Michael. I can appreciate the watch, but the Lange 1 is a design that isn't for me. Thanks for the great comment, man and have a superb weekend!
IDGuy
Glorious weather here for a change. So enjoying it. There’s a lot of information on the website, even available with a custom made Dangerous 9 strap made by John in Germany 👍🏻
Really enjoy your explanation but totally agree, I don't want one!!
Le Sentier, Jaeger LeCoultre is not based in Geneva but in the village Le Sentier in the Vallée de Joux.
@@georgebeckford728
Yes I realize.....I meant Geneve as Holy Trinity, except AP doesn't thrill me so I substituted JLC and should have said "Also".... great catch, thanks!
All good until you hear it costs 33000 euros lol. perfection comes at a cost.
honestly, the layered date numbers annoy me. the watch is not perfect in my opinion
South African?
In the sense of your video, I find beauty in the layout of the Patek P. Nautilus 5712
No I don’t agree, I find the asymmetry of the design irritating, the waste of space and the smaller minute and hour hands fail to maximise legibility.
