Renting video games was mentioned in this video. Miss the days when you could go to movie store and rent video games. The excitement of it being the weekend and knowing you'll be browsing the gaming section a bit was pure awesomeness.
TommyGun Well you can still do it for new console too like xbox 360, ps3, ps4 xbox one , wii, switch, there are plenty of store here in Canada that still do it and it is cheap, like 5$ for 3 days or 7days
A Link to the Past is not only one of the finest crafted games in the zelda series, but one of the most well crafted games of all time! Everything about it is perfect, the music, the atmosphere, the memories, the nostalgia, the difficulty, the dungeons, the gameplay & story. The other day some guy told me ALttP is a bad game...that made me laugh really hard Lol
Johnny I loved this episode, this is far better than any "retrospective" series I have seen on Zelda, your memories and enthusiasm along with Rob's really made this something special.
It was 1993 the first year I ever played a link to the past. My cousin brought the game over and we didn't undestand it either. We were both around 7 or 8 years old and we just went with the punches and eventually figured it out. The game became our youth and best summer memory. We played alttp and mario kart endlessly that summer of 93. Snes will always be my main console!!
Not gunna lie, this is the first video i've ever seen on this channel and i love it! Showed up on 'what you might like' or whatever its called, love it, i'm now subscribed!
It's funny i feel the same way about ocarina of time, I loved that game so much i finished it like 5 times, I could play the whole game under a day. Sometimes I feel like those kind of experiences are what made my childhood.
Love the dynamic you two have going. It's one of the things that makes this show stand out from many of the other great gaming shows on UA-cam. This is one of the few legendary gaming series that I've never played. I like the look of the original title and the one on the SNES looks really cool too. I think I'll have to scour eBay to pick up a copy of each IF I can find them at an affordable price. It's definitely a big IF from what I've seen so far.
I love the way you guys tell your stories about how excited you were, how you got those games, how you used to with your friends etc... We really feel your nostalgia!
Great video guys. My fave Zelda game has to be Link to the Past. I remember playing it a friends house and being blown away by the top down style of gameplay. LOVE IT! Thanks again
I think link to the past is my favorite too. I mean, there's so many epic, awesome zelda games, like the first one, ocarina, and link's awakening (everyon seems to forget that one) but LttP brings back so many good memorysof just good times, and playing it all day, over and over, even to the point of playing it from start to finish in 1 sitting over and over, or just exploring, looking at the cool game art, reading the old NP player's guide with the epic art in it... ahhh, it's just perfect.
The one thing I love about Rob & Johnny is the fact they remember these memories so vividly like it happened yesterday. Like I recall memories like getting the Master System on my 7th birthday and playing Alex Kidd etc but not as detailed as they go with it. I love the Zelda series and A Link to the past like Rob is my favourite Zelda and my favourite game of all time. I can easily go back to it again and again and never get bored.
i swear your videos take a long time to come up but it is worth is your production value on your videos are through the roof. Take all the time in the world to make your videos because they are amazing keep up the good work. I also love you guys personalities. When i called on agg special, i felt like i was talking to one of my friends. you guys are so down to earth YOU ROCK!!!!
A friend of mine gave me the gba port of A Link to the Past for about a month or so in the sixth grade and that was all I cared about. My eyes were glued to that tiny screen and I managed to 100% it not even a week before I had to give it back.
I recently picked up a very rare Zelda game from a guy who works at Nintendo of North America: Zelda Twilight Princess, the limited edition online Japanese version for the Gamecube... UNOPENED. it was never sold in stores, and to find it unopened was a huge find!
Seriously man, keep the videos coming. These bring back so many nostalgic memories of not only Zelda games, but all the other classic games and how we first played them. Really good memories! =D
Dude your videos are in a new level! Are awesome and the photo about link was the first look of the catacter until i play link adventure 2. So have a good one.
Zelda 1 link is the best, i keep to this very day doing drawings of him, so fucking amazing memories of the legend! I thank god for given me the opportunity in life to have lived the nintendo 8 bit era, the NES was the machine of dreams. I keep all the games like gold. Very nice videos Johnny and robman, keep the awesome work up!
A fantastic episode you guys. Your dynamic duo on the show and the enthusiasm and knowledge you guys bring to the table is irreplaceable. I love it. Keep up the great work you guys. Also, Rob, it was awesome to hear you on the OKS podcast. A lot of great insight about Capcom and MML 3. Well done, man.
Seeing the gold Zelda cart and watching my cousin play it in her basement one Thanksgiving is my earliest video game memory. It was a hard game to wrap your head around as a really young kid for sure.
This is classic! You dont hear people talk much about the classic Zeldas anymore. Such a great series back then. I'm not too much into the new ones but the older ones are some of my favorite games of ALL TIME, A Link to the Past being my favorite!...So many memories!...Great video!
Zelda, what an amazing franchise. look at all the memories it brought to us, oh the days, the beautiful days.....may zelda go on forever and continues to bring us Masterpieces like Skyward Sword, Majora's Mask, Ocarina of Time, A Link to the past, link's Awakening, ect,
Excellent special. Definitely the best series of all time in my book and I have to agree with Johnny, the first is my favorite. Thanks for the look back on the series and your memories with it.
Those kids on your road who got everything defiantly didn't have as good as a childhood as you, there was always something special about saving up your money for that one game and just playing it down to the bone.
I remember playing the original Zelda when it was released on the Nes. The ability to free roam was way ahead of it's time. Game is amazing. One of the best franchises
I just discovered your videos today, it was in my suggested section. Im glad it was! I really enjoy them. The first one I seen was the "Sega Rocks!" video, which I totally agreed with and clicked accordingly!
Zelda 2 was the first Nintendo game I ever saw. When my parents bought one it was one of the 3 original games the got with it. I liked it even though as a kid I really didn't understand it, My dad got into it too and almost beat it until one of my friends at the time erased all his work and he never played it again. I couldn't beat the game without cheating until I was about 19 and when I did man It was the best feeling ever. I even took a picture of the final screen to remember it.
I also think of the rain when I remember A Link to the Past. The first part of the game really established the atmosphere and caught a lot of people's attention, I think.
Had a Sega as a kid so it was Y's for me that created similar memories. Haven't seriously spent much time at all with the Zelda games but I think I might just go and pick some of them up after watching your enthusiastic trip down memory lane. Even the older ones look like they'd still be an enjoyable adventure today.
I was practically the only kid on the block with a Nintendo Entertainment System Deluxe Set. I picked up The Legend of Zelda based on the Nintendo Fun Club News pictuerless coverage in 1987. I remember the weird "burglar" Zelda commerical and seeing glimpses of the actual video game. So I bought the game no sooner it released in America. I was blown away by the NES gamepak box and the Gold cartridge. Spending many school nights on this game. This game actually got me in trouble with school :P
Thanks so much for another episode. I know you can get real busy but i love every time i see your videos pop up in my subscription box. I'd watch you 7 days a week if you could produce that much, but i know how difficult it is to make these and be this entertaining. Thanks again and hope to see more.
I will go on record and say that The Legend of Zelda is my favorite game in history. Never again has the series managed to capture that true essence of what makes a -game- amazing. No weighty cutscenes, no hammy dialogue; just straight up pure game-y goodness.
Yeah, I was born in 91. I wish I could experience the console boom like others did, but I'm also glad I got to grow up on SNES, Genesis, N64, PS, N64, and those great 90's GB/GBC games in my single-digit years.
I love your like nostalgic stories :D its amazing like it makes me wanna go back in time and do that it sounds so much fun to go to someones house and play video games like now a days lots of kids have ps3 or 360 but it sounds so amazing to here how you guys plaid games ^^. I always look forward and love your videos :D
I didnt know about the trick until many many years later either, and Im glad I didnt because beating him a number of times the traditional way was much more rewarding.
Awesome video, I really need to find a copy of link to the past and beat it. I also need to get back to the first two zelda games and finally finish them lol.
Man the memories I had the same experiance, playing my Vic 20 really happy thinking it was the bee's knees then a lucky friend gets bought the original NES and wow the step up in game quality was amazing. Happy happy memmories.
I don't think I was old enough to be blown away by the original Zelda, even though I did own an Atari 2600 before my NES... It was when I first played ALTTP that my mind was blown.
My first experience with Zelda was that when I was young, I could only rely on the consoles that my friends had, and they had games like Mario and Sonic, but they never had any Zelda games. So when I finally got my own console, in 1998, the N64, on that christmas I got Zelda Ocarina of Time and I fell in love with the series. I also loved Majora's Mask as it was so similar yet so different in the way it was played. I loved the N64 games so much I can't say everything in these comments.
I wish you did talk about all of the Zelda games and just made more parts. But this still brought a smile to my face and I enjoyed every 13:46 of this video.
Love Legend of Zelda. I remember my first time playing it at a friend's house. Had no idea what I was supposed to do and just wandered the map killing monsters till I died. Unfortunately I wouldn't get a lot of experience with Zelda (we didn't an NES till '90 or so and Zelda was kinda hard to find by then) till Link's Awakening for the GB and ALttP for SNES. Those two games really brought me into the franchise. And it has been my favorite gaming franchise since.
I have two copies of A Link To The Past, the original and the snes version of the greatest hits re-release. I also have Zelda and Zelda 2 in the gold cartridges....
@iseezapie I think once Miyamoto called it an RPG, but all other media call it an action adventure game, and it is. It lacks a leveling up system which is pretty defining in any RPG. The irony of a Role Playing Game is that they aren't about Role Playing anymore, leveling up, experience, character stats, stuff like that are traits of an RPG.
I love the original Zelda art. I am partial to all the tiny drawings of Link like the one of him drinking from a bottle. The art in the LttP player's guide is just fantastic as well. Absolutely love it. Zelda II is one of my favourite Zelda games but damned it's hard. I never got past Ganon's temple. Just gave up there. Great episode!
My very first RPG! I still hear the original music in my head. Daaaa, danananananaaaa, danananananaaaa, danananaaNUHNUHNUH NUHNUHNUH naaaa naaa nannaaaaaaa! Danananaaaa! NA NANANA NA NAAAA!
I played A Link to the Past when it was remade on the GBA. I played it and I was blown away. These graphics, on a portible handheld! I first played it at the Game Cube Club event that was touring the USA. That alongside Wind Waker. I hogged the shit out of those two demos. I also beat one of the reps from Nintendo at Mario Party 4 and got some kick-ass gamecube wrist warmers. When I found out about A Link Between Worlds, I came. When I bought it, I went right home and played the shit out of it. I am guilty though; I never finished HERO MODE. It still bothers me to this very day. I am going to marathon all my unfinished games sometime this year.
i love the legend of zelda, I pulled the wii out of my closet where it had resided for probably 3 years just to beat skyward sword in 3 days. Zelda is so nostalgic, even when playing the new installments!
sheer enthusiasm, you guys are crazy lol.eh for my part i never got to play the NES Zelda games.my first Zelda experience was Link to the Past, and i remember the intro too.i remember trying to slash that barrier at the castle, wanting to get in.and at that time,i owned a super nintendo i believe but i rented the game a few times trying to beat it.it's still one of my favorite SNES game to this day.oh and i also loved going through manuals as a kid too
Speaking of remaking the original Zelda, years ago I tried to recreate it as an Unreal Tournament 2004 mod. I never got very far, pretty much just made a map of the first dungeon and that's it. But I'll tell ya, running around that dungeon in 3D, even with fairly basic default textures and a machine gun instead of a sword, was pretty freakin' amazing.
Awesome video! My favorite Zelda games are OoT and Link's Awakening. I'd love to hear either Johnny or Rob briefly say something about the newer generation of Zelda games, too. Do you like all / most of them? Which one is your favorite? Thanks for doing these great videos :)
There's nothing stupid about remembering the rain so well. I was blown away when I first saw it and it's still my strongest memory of the game. Of course the whole game was nothing short of amazing every step of the way. It's still one of my favorite game endings of all time. How cool was it to get to see how your adventure affected the lives and world around you?
The very first Zelda game was Link's Awakening on the Game Boy. Then I played A Link to the Past on SNES. I have many a great memories with both games. Great video guys. Keep up the good work with the podcast.
Great zelda video, johnny!!! The first time I saw zelda was at a sears kiosk the holidays season it cames out. Youngsters might not know this, but in 1986 zelda was billed as "the never ending game". a game so complex that it was impossible to beat. Interesting history note, in 1989 the first nintendo power magazine came out with the selling point that it had the first published world map of zelda so you could now find all the dungeons under the "link" second quest!
By definition, Zelda games are RPGs. RPG, standing for Role Playing Game, applies to the series because you play the role of "Link" (In quotations because you get to name Link in most games). While the game may not have that many modern RPG elements such as leveling up and exp (Besides Zelda II), it is still absolutely an RPG. There are even side quests in pretty much every game like getting heart pieces, empty bottles, weapon upgrades, and more.
Really glad you guys did a special on Zelda, it's my favorite video game series. While I am partial to Ocarina of Time, A Link to the Past holds a special place for me as it was the first one I ever played. Third would probably be Majora's Mask or Twilight Princess. Speaking of which, I still need to beat Zelda II...
here`s a funny gaming experience story: my best friend told me he had a horrible nighmare about being stuck in that castle with those multiple purple warps, wandering from room to room.
Renting video games was mentioned in this video. Miss the days when you could go to movie store and rent video games. The excitement of it being the weekend and knowing you'll be browsing the gaming section a bit was pure awesomeness.

Ness Kirby He's a fool and a liar
or a troll
Kinaldio Ikr the best Zelda games were for the cd-i everyone knows that.
+Supercalifragilistic expialidocious
We don't talk about the CDI games. Never speak of them again.
Johnny I loved this episode, this is far better than any "retrospective" series I have seen on Zelda, your memories and enthusiasm along with Rob's really made this something special.
A Link to the past is sooooooo good. Thank you for this retrospective! A+ work, guys
Holy crap a 9-year-old Game Chasers comment, from before they were so famous! @_@
The friendship between you two is so awesome :)
It was 1993 the first year I ever played a link to the past. My cousin brought the game over and we didn't undestand it either. Holy crap these guys are so young in this video

wow, you ARE the coolest man on the planet!
when my nieces played Super Smash Bros, I was like wow throwback to Zelda 2 palaces
Great video guys keep it up more Zelda
Seriously man, keep the videos coming. These bring back so many nostalgic memories of not only Zelda games, but all the other classic games and how we first played them. Really good memories! =D
Dude your videos are in a new level! Are awesome and the photo about link was the first look of the catacter until i play link adventure 2. So have a good one.
A link to the past for me, about once a year I get back into it and it never gets boring.Probably my favorite game of all time.
I just beat Zelda II the other day. I hope I can meet you eventually. I’ve enjoyed this channel for ten years now. Thanks for all the mems, man.
I love watching these videos and escaping into the land of nostalgia
Zelda 1 link is the best, i keep to this very day doing drawings of him, so fucking amazing memories of the legend!
I thank god for given me the opportunity in life to have lived the nintendo 8 bit era, the NES was the machine of dreams. I keep all the games like gold.

first HCG video I watched, now Zelda is 30 yrs old.
Excellent special. Definitely the best series of all time in my book and I have to agree with Johnny, the first is my favorite. Thanks for the look back on the series and your memories with it.
Fantastic vid Jonny and Rob! I love hearing about your initial experiences with each of the early games! Looking forward to seeing you guys at PAX!
Those kids on your road who got everything defiantly didn't have as good as a childhood as you, there was always something special about saving up your money for that one game and just playing it down to the bone.
Every single Zelda game has been epic in my opinion.. really cool 25 years
Thanks for sharing your memories on this series
I gotta go with Link to the Past as well, I can't count how many times I've played through that game. Great show, man.
The first Legend of Zelda game blew my mind too. The title theme and overworld/underworld music are still kickass to this date.
I have very fond memories of playing the original Zelda on NES with my Dad. To this day it's the only video game he ever got into!
I do not believe Johnny is 40...
I see it.
Zelda 2 was the first Nintendo game I ever saw. When my parents bought one it was one of the 3 original games the got with it.
I liked it even though as a kid I really didn't understand it, My dad got into it too and almost beat it until one of my friends at the time erased all his work and he never played it again.

i am such a huge Legend of Zelda fan. i would take real arrows to my knees just to play them forever
'Windwaker' was my first and favorite Zelda game!
I was practically the only kid on the block with a Nintendo
Entertainment System Deluxe Set. I picked up The Legend of Zelda
based on the Nintendo Fun Club News pictuerless coverage in 1987. I remember the weird "burglar" Zelda commerical and seeing glimpses

What a great tribute! Nice boxed Japanese Zelda as well. Thanks for sharing the cool memories guys.
great episode! love you and Rob mans stories about how you first played the games :D
I will go on record and say that The Legend of Zelda is my favorite game in history. Never again has the series managed to capture that true essence of what makes a -game- amazing. No weighty cutscenes, no hammy dialogue; just straight up pure game-y goodness.
whaaaa i thought you guys were from the states for sure until i looked at your channel and it says your from Vancouver, sick! such great stories guys
I still remember getting the first Zelda on Christmas morning 1989.... and wondering why the hell the cartridge was gold. Amazing game and series.
Yeah, I was born in 91. I wish I could experience the console boom like others did, but I'm also glad I got to grow up on SNES, Genesis, N64, PS, N64, and those great 90's GB/GBC games in my single-digit years.
From a Huge Legend of Zelda fan and which is my favorite game series, I thank you for this episode
Would love to see an update video on the series in 2022. More Rob & Johnny!

I always look forward and love your videos :D
WHAT???? there was a trick to beating shadow link in zelda 2??????
omfg im 20 years late haha
I didnt know about the trick until many many years later either, and Im glad I didnt because beating him a number of times the traditional way was much more rewarding.
yeah you had to man mode him and hope you survive the encounter :D
underrated game, definitely. good to hear you showing it love.
To see you doing a fan perspective review on my fav series is awesome, the best out there, defo faving this
Awesome video, I really need to find a copy of link to the past and beat it. I also need to get back to the first two zelda games and finally finish them lol.
HCG + Rob man, thanks for all the great videos. Nobody can tell a story like you two.
Man the memories I had the same experiance, playing my Vic 20 really happy thinking it was the bee's knees then a lucky friend gets bought the original NES and wow the step up in game quality was amazing.

My first "Zelda" game was "A Link To The Past". And get this...it was given to me, brand new in the box as a gift from my mom.
I have two copies of A Link To The Past, the original and the snes version of the greatest hits re-release. I also have Zelda and Zelda 2 in the gold cartridges....
@iseezapie I think once Miyamoto called it an RPG, but all other media call it an action adventure game, and it is. It lacks a leveling up system which is pretty defining in any RPG. really want to see you guys review the rest! maybe just the console ones because there are way too many other wise!
I find the episodes where you talk about gaming memories the most interesting
I love the original Zelda art. I am partial to all the tiny drawings of Link like the one of him drinking from a bottle. The art in the LttP player's guide is just fantastic as well. Absolutely love it.
Zelda II is one of my favourite Zelda games but damned it's hard. I never got past Ganon's temple. Just gave up there.
Great episode!
I really wish I was born early enough to have my mind blown by Zelda 1.
My very first RPG! I still hear the original music in my head. Daaaa, danananananaaaa, danananananaaaa, danananaaNUHNUHNUH NUHNUHNUH naaaa naaa nannaaaaaaa! Danananaaaa! NA NANANA NA NAAAA!

When I bought it, I went right home and played the shit out of it. I am guilty though; I never finished HERO MODE. It still bothers me to this very day. I am going to marathon all my unfinished games sometime this year.
a link to the past is, and always will be my favourite game of all time... i love that game
i love the legend of zelda, I pulled the wii out of my closet where it had resided for probably 3 years just to beat skyward sword in 3 days. Zelda is so nostalgic, even when playing the new installments!
Watching this now on the 35th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda!
sheer enthusiasm, you guys are crazy lol.eh for my part i never got to play the NES Zelda games.my first Zelda experience was Link to the Past, and i remember the intro too.i remember trying to slash that barrier at the castle, wanting to get in.and at that time,i owned a super nintendo i believe but i rented the game a few times trying to beat it.it's still one of my favorite SNES game to this day.oh and i also loved going through manuals as a kid too
Speaking of remaking the original Zelda, years ago I tried to recreate it as an Unreal Tournament 2004 mod. I never got very far, pretty much just made a map of the first dungeon and that's it. But I'll tell ya, running around that dungeon in 3D, even with fairly basic default textures and a machine gun instead of a sword, was pretty freakin' amazing.
This is one of the few channels that I truly respect
Awesome video! My favorite Zelda games are OoT and Link's Awakening. I'd love to hear either Johnny or Rob briefly say something about the newer generation of Zelda games, too. Do you like all / most of them? Which one is your favorite?
Thanks for doing these great videos :)
How sick would an HD remaster of Zelda II The Adventure Of Link be?
There's nothing stupid about remembering the rain so well. I was blown away when I first saw it and it's still my strongest memory of the game. Of course the whole game was nothing short of amazing every step of the way. It's still one of my favorite game endings of all time. How cool was it to get to see how your adventure affected the lives and world around you?
a link to the past was my first zelda, it took me years to finally beat it
The very first Zelda game was Link's Awakening on the Game Boy.
Don't you have the Famicom Disk System version of Zelda 1? I have a game you don't?
This is the kind of video I'm looking for in the UA-cam gaming community.
only 2 mins into the vid but already subscribed.
Can't wait to check out all of your videos. Thank you.
Link's Awakening is my favorite in the Zelda series:D Cool video about the some of the older Zelda games. 25 years, that's insane to think about@_@
The instruction manuals for the original NES Zeldas were awesome for sure.
here`s a funny gaming experience story: my best friend told me he had a horrible nighmare about being stuck in that castle with those multiple purple warps, wandering from room to room.
