    His points about side pressure are always spot on. You can tell that's one of many things that separate Devon Larratt from even the other top pullers. While they have more muscular power, or are more explosive at the start, he always wins in a super match format. His opponents are relying almost exclusively on what they can do through muscle strength, while he is all about technique and isolating pressure points 99% of the guys don't even know are there.
    Watch his match with Pushkar: while Andrey squeaks out the first pull, Devon figured out exactly what to do and how to deliver the connection he needed to gain control. From that point on, Andrey could only shake his head in disbelief as Larratt beat him again and again for a 5-1 final score.

    • @VikingII
      @VikingII 10 років тому +16

      I had a hypothesis that these guys like Pushkar seem to rely on side pressure too much and focus a lot on the pin line. As a result of their side-pressure focus, they are burning through the stamina of the medial rotation in their shoulder (This is what keeps your arm from flopping outward when you push sideways) meanwhile, Devon is using his biceps and back to create rising pressure and back pressure to avoid the pin, and the opponent's rotator cuff gets burnt out fighting bicep and back (which has much greater size, strength, and stamina), then they can no longer produce meaningful side pressure to win the match due to fatigue. -- but maybe i'm way off...

      @DANGJOS 7 років тому +2

      +VikingII That's right. And what's funny is that Devon destroyed Pushkar for that very reason. Devon is a very smart puller!

    I would take this advice with a grain of salt. Devon always ends up on his frame when he's weaker than the other guy. There's nothing wrong with training side pressure if you take to it well. Focus on where your strong and put your energy there. Don't rob yourself with a one size fits all training program.

    • @radoslavstoev4550
      @radoslavstoev4550 3 роки тому +5

      Yep. My biggest weakness on the table was side pressure and I was afraid of training it. Since then I started with just 15 kg for 20 30 reps. Now I am at 45kg for 5 reps and I see noticable improvement on the table.

    • @Sinkatze
      @Sinkatze 3 роки тому +5

      Agree and like he said himself, he pushes too hard and injures. We have to train under that limit. Also every arm wrestler is different and their techniques should be taken with a grain of salt like you said to make your own style

    • @ehoc42
      @ehoc42 2 роки тому

      devon also has poor biomechanics to apply a ton of side pressure. Since he has a ridiculously long elbow-to-fingertips, applying a bunch of side pressure probably puts a lot of torque on his elbows, which might explain his elbow problems. Devon is also a chronic over-trainer ("retarded", in his words), and over-training side pressure gets counterproductive real fast. There are many people who have been able to condition their elbows to do high intensity side pressure lifts - just ask Todd Hutchings. Being able to improve side pressure is a massive benefits on the table, because as Devon said, it's involved in every arm wrestling move.

    • @Sinkatze
      @Sinkatze Рік тому +1

      Yes this is true, thats why people need to listen to every pro as their own personal experience and take tips and compare it to yourself and learn your strenghts and weaknesses.
      I know guys that have really good natural side pressure and can go straight to the side and then drag back after, its completely opposite, but works for them.
      I think as long as you train it in a safe position and never push the weight to extremes, the rest will be on practice pulling and youre good

    how about instead of side pressure training, train specifically to enhance the tendon strength in the elbow? working advanced straight arm exercises like the planche, or even the supinated grip back lever will help build the tendon strength at the elbow, as will advanced pulling exercises like dead hang false grip muscle ups and one arm pull ups. they'll also build full body strength and the one arm pull up and muscle up will build general pulling strength: when I first started training the one arm flex hang it felt like my ribs were pulling apart, but now it's "easy".

    • @drygordspellweaver8761
      @drygordspellweaver8761 Рік тому

      It’s not the tendons. It’s the ligament at the elbow.

    • @DigiTuben
      @DigiTuben 9 місяців тому

      @@drygordspellweaver8761 - You're portraying, based on the understanding of roberttaylor8906's comment, the ligaments in the elbow are the only specific thing that should be trained to help side pressure? Can you explain?

    • @drygordspellweaver8761
      @drygordspellweaver8761 9 місяців тому +1

      @@DigiTuben It's mostly the ligament, yeah. Thicker Tendons will add supporting structure but not specifically with the rotation of the humerus. Only the elbow ligament can transfer that force.
      Specifcally in the context of the video, Devon blew up his elbow ligament. The first to break from side pressure is the humerus, followed by the elbow ligament. Those are the weakest links.

    • @DigiTuben
      @DigiTuben 9 місяців тому

      I figured you were implying that, but wanted to clarify. Thank you! If you don't mind, what is your background connected to this topic? Would you agree that, with what we know of as of now, someone cannot specifically target the tendons and/or ligaments (physically) to increase their strength, as one would attribute this ability to muscle? I know that's a slightly loaded question, but figure you'd understand the meaning.

    • @Bot-xp6kl
      @Bot-xp6kl 3 роки тому

      @@minimale100 the bones become stronger if the muscles get stronger so that doesn't really make sense and if you get stronger at armwrestling your technique also gets better its mostly the guys that are armwrestling for the first time without any training or good explanation that break their arms. In a really bad position your arm only needs 15-20 pounds to break if you have a beginner arm

    • @minimale100
      @minimale100 3 роки тому

      @@Bot-xp6kl I agree. Just some of them start at a level where they can not generate enough force to break their arms yet. But when they learn a bit about the sport they definitely will be strong enough and need conditioning of the arm as you just said

    • @Average1212
      @Average1212 2 роки тому

      @@minimale100 This is incorrect most breaks happen in a losing position at bad angles, they have very little to do with muscular strength. Some breaks happen pushing with the arm outside of the shoulder but once again they are due to being in a poor position.

      Daniel j Hi Daniel, great to hear your interested in this skill. A lot of the way Devon speaks is anatomically. Meaning he has studied a bit of science of human body and it's mechanics.
      Side pressure is referred to a force from for example the center of your body pushing outwards to the direction of your shoulders. "internal rotation" There are four important muscles for internal rotation from your scapula. (Supraspinatus, infraspinatus, Teres minor and subscapularis)
      when strength training you train your large muscles first and then your smaller muscles afterwards. Large muscles are designed to produce most control and force production. Smaller muscles come into play after large muscles. Also due to fact that smaller muscles have smaller supply of "ATP" energy. To keep muscles functioning under performance.
      Unfortunately you can't train for joint, tendon, ligament strength increase due to biomechincally those parts just don't and won't ever function that way. As it's physics reality. It's the muscles around it and the types of fibers it has that takes the force production load. When the muscle fibers cannot handle the load, dislocation or joint/bone breakages happen.

    • @Zero_Contact
      @Zero_Contact 8 років тому +2

      Daniel j as I can see your post is from a year ago, no doubt you have learnt a fair amount of anatomy and biomechanics in that time. 🙂keep positive and interested in Science!! Peace.
