I'm interested in joining the academy but I have a question. I'm a complete beginner. I've had my kit for 2 weeks. Does this cover everything like reading music, learning notes,, keeping time etc or is it just techniques for people that already know how to play and just want to learn new things?
man, now I not only watch this for advice and help, but also for the great editing and watching you joke around. Awesome Video as always
I got home from work, watched this video, adjusted my throne height and distance, spent the next 3 hours playing, and everything has improved pretty dramatically.
I was almost had it dialed in but just needed a little more height and distance.
Thanks so much, Marthyn!
you're welcome- congratz on your progress!
I don’t know any other youtube channel that explains such a difficult and tricky topic in such a perfect and profund way like you do! Thanx for sharing your knowledge! You definitely help!!
I’ve watched every single video you’ve uploaded in the past on the ankle technique and double bass drumming frustrations. By following your exercises and tips I’ve gone from not being able to play the ankle technique at 120 bpm due to my right leg twitching all the way to a controlled 160 bpm with calves in one week. Thanks Marthyn!
Playing fast double bass is such a complex science. I spent all my life with "drum teachers" telling me to practice rudiments and exercises in books. No one ever mentioned any of this. I spent years frustrated until I found you Marthyn. You're the fucking best teacher out there, and an incredible drummer too.
thank you my friend!!
I'm just here for Marthyn's drawing ability!! Beautiful stuff!! French grip!!!
I've been waiting for this topic
Thanks Marthyn
Great stuff man. Thank you!
Thank you!! These tips are extremely helpful. Cheers.
FANTASTIC VIDEO!!!!! Thank you so much, this was incredibly helpful!
Awesome man. I need this knowledge
Thxs for all this tips you re great continue this way 🤘🤘🤘
Your teaching has helped me so much, thank you!
Love your emotional disposition and cheerful approach!
You are a legend for this explanation 🙏 thank you sir
I've been watching your videos for years. Ima have to buy your master class stuff. Youre ridiculously informative on techniques. (loved when you and 66Samus were going back and forth too lol).
Marthyn! thank you so much for explaining this. I did the 1st one stet up and was running UNLV Fights Song with my feet at bpm. Huge improvement. Thank you so much.
Great info, would enjoy drum position and cymbal position. Thanks!
Thank you! over 40 + years of drumming you taught me a VERY important fact about the height of my seat hip/angle and its necessary physics behind it.
Great video thank you! Alex Rudinger is a perfect example of having mastered this craft. Interestingly I also always noticed Jay Weinberg having a very... unusual ankle angle
Just as I thought sitting higher would help me isolate my calves , because of how the foot/leg is forced into a certain position! Maybe both works though but now I'll need to try this one for a period of time. Cheers for your knowledge , Marthyn!
Hello sir .. i would like to thank you for all those tips... today i acheived stability... kinda xD .. hand and finger + hip and angle motion ... ill never be able to thanks you enough for it sir ! Cheers from Quebec
Thanks a lot! The way you pronounce "height" just does not matter. What matters, it's that the topic is covered in the best possible way! Thank again!
Thank You for this. I play on drums from 15 years and now i know what i did wrong.
Can you please make another video about the physical placement of other aspects behind the kit? For example I would really appreciate hearing your reasoning behind why some drummers use two bass drums and/or two hi hats from a technical perspective rather than just because of personal preference. Also, I know you touched on this in your react series but other things that would really help me out is your take on snare and tom angles as well as other benefits and disadvantages to other drum and cymbal positions
Hey Marthyn, another great video! Do you think you could make a video on workouts specific to developing the weak hand AND foot?
Currently I am trying to get my left hand up to par with my right, but I just can't seem to be able to get my left hand fingers to do what they need to do. I'm working on the switch-grip technique and totally understand the fundamentals, but I'm just really struggling to get my left hand fingers to follow the rebound of the stick properly.
So if you have any workouts specifically for conditioning the weak hand fingers and also for conditioning the weak foot, that would be greatly appreciated! But I'm sure you have lots of other videos planned out, so if you don't get around to it, I understand.
Thanks for all that you do for drummers.
As. Argentina 🇦🇷🤘🏾
This is amazing, thanks! What about the position of the player on the throne? I always noticed people sitting on different positions (in front/middle/back), and was wondering which position is better for which technique, and in general how it affects your playing?
man i love your chanel
What brand of bass padle do you use?,it looks very light/soft
Could you go into more detail about the "static tension" of the upper leg when playing at higher BPM? I have adopted this technique but when playing up to 250 BPM I can usually only get through 3 or 4 bars before I'm fatigued. How do you control this tension?
I'm having trouble with relaxing my hip flexor. It seems I lose foot control if I don't hold my leg up and it's that muscle that does it.
I'm still begining learning this technique, and some days are better than others. I've watched a lot of videos already but I'm still having trouble controling it. Either I'm at 200+ bpm twitching the muscles or at 135/140 bpm with almost no control and using shin.
I'll keep practicing.
Cheers
Hey Marthyn, I love your video's! Could you maybe react to Matt Garstka of Animals as Leaders? It's not a speed metal drummer but there's some serious power going when he's playing double bass.
Hi Marthyn, can you cover the coordination technique of alternating left and right foot using the ankle technique. While I can accomplish the ankle technique on each foot individually, when I try to alternate between left and right foot I get both feet hitting at the same time. Thanks
this is the video I am looking for for a long time on YT. But how about the beater? what if I don't want to bury the beater?
Marthyn, you just uploaded this video right after my workout, while I was thinking about the throne height(not hate).
Sitting lower does the job, but
1. Yes, it causes pain in the lower back.
2. If I go too fast I start to use shin muscles anyway. How to avoid it?
Great video!
Hi thanks for video. Can share how this technique without shoe on floor without pedal? I try but too quick tightening muscle at lower part.
I’ve been watching all of Marthyn’s ankle technique videos just cause to me heel-toe sounds bad without triggers and swivel looks dumb.
Can we used angle and heel toe technique simultaneously ..
How can we adjust the suiting position.....
🤔
Espero tu respuesta.
Saludos .
Hi, Marthyn! Greetings from Brazil. My question is about playing with bare feet. Do it affect the movements and the use of the muscles? Thanks in advance.
Can you do a video on how the correct seat height should feel? I am having uncomfortable tension in my hip flexors and it’s much worse at a low height as shown. It’s like I’m holding my legs up when using the ankle motion. Is it just my technique or is it setup?
Marythn can i have some help?. I have a problem that whenever i try playing fast double base my feet just start playing doubles after a few seconds
How to "disable" shin muscles? I can play for 220 bpm 16th notes for 5 sec only lol. Muscles are always feel like it's overtired, also my footboard begins to lag, it's jumping on high speeds
When I sit with an angle >90° between my upper and lower leg I find it really hard to reach the toms while maintaining the double bass roll without loosing my balance. My toms are already pretty much as close as possible, am I missing something? Or did I just need to do balance exercises?
My problem with seating like that is that I get too far from Tom’s and cymbals I mean….wth em I suppose to do I got very long lega
Hey Marthyn!
Someday i will play 300 bpm double bass!
I think you found the correct hate in your comment section: no hate!! :)
Thanks for the info!!
I find i can get the ankle technique working consistently with my weaker foot but am really struggling with my dominant foot. Its like a twitching motion takes over and i lose control. Its to the point where my foot freezes and stops producing a stroke altogether
I think you might be going too fast cus that's what happens when I imagine I'm playing fleshgod
@@amneenja5720 that's just the speed my foot goes at when I attempt the ankle motion. I'm trying to relax and focus on playing slower so I have more control but I lose power and no longer hit the bass drum head. I don't think my toes are moving out the way of the rising foot board therefore I'm hindering the rebound of the beater
John Arnold You should probably start at a slower tempo, one that someone would typically use just legs (idk 140) and use a mix of ankle and legs with exaggerated ankle motion to train the ankles before going faster and switching completely
Try playing feet only in unison.
I really hate when the hate of my frone is just not right.
I love your videos though
I sit at 21” being 5’7”. Have gone as low as 19.5” which is 29%
It's probably too late for me because I was impatient at the start and tried to go fast too soon, how can I train myself to use certain muscles and joints with poor coordination?
one foot at a time
try focusing on one foot at a time, so your brain can force it to play slower and focus on the contractions and all the other stuff
do it for 10+ minutes stretches with each foot, at around 160 BPM, or whatever "slow" BPM feels good. really focus on contracting the calves and not the shins.
I do this for ankle techniqud and it helps my swivel technique a lot, gives it extra power and tightness.
thanks I'm still not sure how to single out my calfs though
@@evanfourie5093 this is amazing dude
imma take some notes haha ty
@@evanfourie5093 thanks I'll try that
Please react to Matt MaCguire!!
Kaaaaaaaaf😆🤘🏿
when are you gonna react to Darkside from MGLA haha ^_^ ?
No one talks about distance between knees, width of feet
correct hate :D
(Ich bin über 2m groß)
hör auf zu jammern 😂
As LOW as it will go!!!
Do you know what’s funny about this that every time there’s somebody showing some new trick for double bass, drumming in speed drumming it always shows up with these dinky kids Toys “R” Us 22 inch bass drums well I’ve got 24 x 18. Try bass drum pedals and blast Pete with that let me see what you can do without triggers.
