    I recently did something similar. I stopped playing my weird flat foot technique (top speed around 250-260bpm) to developing the swivel technique and now I am able to play more comfortably for longer periods of time. I got a lot of constant practice ahead to get up to my target 260bpm. I couldn't agree more with practicing longer runs at lower bpm. This has helped me so much compared to my old practice routine.

    Congratulations for reaching your goals, it was fun to follow your progress!
    I did that beginner thing last year, returning to the heel down technique that I had dropped several years ago because my then new band environment required more power. Still, double bass with my heels up remained uncomfortable for me, plus my ankle motion sounded sloppy and I couldn't keep the time for more than 10 seconds from 130 bpm upward. Since I play in a Heavy Stoner Rock band I need neither fast tempos nor long sequences on double bass, but I wanted to perform the short to mid-length passages which I do play with vigor and ease.
    So my goal was to be able to play 16th notes at 160 bpm for at least one minute straight - and the way from 60 to 110 bpm did not take long, but I was stuck there for months at semi-loud 16ths for three minutes. That is, until today: I tried out the ankle motion, just for the fun of it, and suddenly I was playing a clean, powerful, easy one-minute roll of 16ths at 130 bpm! That feeling of triumph that only a beginner can enjoy! ;) Now I'm set for the remaining 30 bpm and I'll continue my tedious weekly heel down routine (plus a few rounds of ankle motion to loosen things up once in a while).
    Long story short, I can definitely confirm what you said in the video: Practicing long sequences develops your stamina (and control). And I may add from my own experience that a different technique can help you better your actual technique. :)
    Keep up the good work!

      Thanks for this insight! Yes, heel down definetly helps a lot with ankle motion - it also helps with my heel-toe single strokes when the upstroke is too weak.

      @wanjanechtangroeger  5 років тому +3

      That is a very tough question because it wasn't like I sat down for a couple of weeks, only practising a certain technique. Also I think that all my previous experience pülaying drums really helped me to learn the ankle motion faster. Another thing to keep in mind is, that different people can have very different learning curves.
      But as a rough estimate - if I would have focussed only on learning ankle motion and would have practised that for 5-6 days a week (one hour each day), I think it would have taken me definetely less than a month to get to my current level. I also remember that the first steps with my heel-toe single strokes didn't take too long. Maybe a couple of weeks until I reached 180-190bpm. But I cannot be 100% sure because I didn't have a metronome back then :D

      Für mich hängt das sehr vom Tempo ab. Bis 180-190bpm gebrauche ich auf jeden Fall beides und lasse das Gewicht meiner Beine auf das Pedal fallen und stoße mich quasi aus den Fußgelenken wieder ab. Bei höherem Tempo, so ab 190-200 ist es eher so, dass ich meine Oberschenkel stationär halte und nur aus der Wade spiele, wobei der Fuß durch Rebound und Feder wieder zurück gedrückt wird nach jedem Schlag. Für höheres Tempo macht es auf jeden Fall Sinn, nur die Waden zu benutzen, bei mittlerem Tempo hilft mir das "Mitwippen" der Beine dabei, mehr Power und Präzision zu haben.

    • @mr.d7429
      @mr.d7429 4 роки тому

      Viktor Bjornstad_Drums2nd go back down to the tempo right before you start transitioning to the bad movement you don’t like. Do that tempo for 1 minute and rest a minute ( intervals). Once you feel comfortable at that tempo, start increasing the tempo by 2-5bpm increments but keep watching your posture so you don’t start repeating the bad movements you don’t like again!

    Did you encounter this?

    • @redlightclinicdrummer
      @redlightclinicdrummer 5 років тому

      Listen. Please. Only! Practice triplets. Rather if it's eighth notes 16th 32 etc. This is my key anyway. Working in 3's makes you're ankle tension always consistently face tension. Play blast beats all around the kit. And it will improve your over all playing

    • @wanjanechtangroeger
      @wanjanechtangroeger  5 років тому

      I am not sure what "upper leg joint zone" means but if your knees hurt, make sure your pedals are set up at the right angle towards you, in alignement with your feet. But if your upper legs hurt and you have trouble with balance I think you might have this problem: When I started I tried to completely lift my legs up and push down the pedals only with my ankle - this works great at higher tempos but it is very uncomfortable at slow or midtempo (because balance is hard to maintain). So I did two things: First I practised ankle motion only with one foot at a time. And when I started using both feet, I developed a mix of full leg and ankle motion. I was actually playing full leg (around 150bpm) and trying to get more and more additional power from my ankles. The faster I became the less leg motion I needed and at 190-200 it is pure ankle motion.

    • @wanjanechtangroeger

      For the beginning absolutely heel-up full leg motion! Even when you learn better techniques later, you will always keep using full leg motion for slower tempos, so it is no wasted effort anyway to learn it and up to 140-160bpm it works really well and is easy to learn.
