It's not humility. We are telling the truth because we know the truth. Memorizing cubes and roots and tables seriously doesnt mean you're good at math. Now if you'll compare yourself with even lower standards like American math education, you'll of course feel great. Compare yourself to Russia and China where people actually are good at math. Russians win almost all international coding competitions, math Olympiads, etc. They have math circles in schools. Most Red coders on Topcoder are Russians. Only 1-2 Indians have been red in many years that too from IIT Bombay. Same with China. Memorizing 9 cubed is 729 isn't called math. Solve theoretical maths. That shows your aptitude. Most IITs teach like this in the first year.

We learn mathematical tables, squares and cubes (atleast up to 20 for squares and up to 10 for cubes) in school. So when they were asked the square of 18 most of them were not actually calculating it but giving the answer from memory.
But the fact that we don't use calculators in school does strengthen our ability to do calculations mentally.
I agree with Rick - just because you are educated doesn't mean you are smart!

There are two ways to think about it. I remember scoring 98 out of 100 in my 10th board, and getting very disappointed when I found out later that I made a silly mistake for a 2-marker. So although we do learn a lot of cool tricks and calculation gets really fun with Vedic math tricks, we put a lot of pressure on ourselves for marks in maths and sci. And for people who aren't good at these, they themselves feel like they are stupid and sometimes the society also makes them feel that way. I believe kids need to be empowered to pursue whatever they are good at and not just get forced into being good at maths.

Parents have good expectations from us is because we have big competition going on in India. We have large population and opportunities are very less. That is why even if you get medium marks, you won't have much opportunities. That is why parents always want their child to be best.❤️❤️

Actually stuff like square of 12 and root of 256 and 225 come by *very very* often in schools maths sum. Like you'll find like 50 questions including these common calculations and it repeats for like 4 or 5 grades.
So it becomes a thing of memorization.
