Put a keyway in the shaft and hub. Have the set screw hold the key not the axel. You are putting torque into the weakest part. If you grounded the axel already it can still be done
Did you ever come across discover live steam as you were doing this project
Also can you make a second car that attaches to the front via chain? Like it isnt driven, but is pulled?
SimpliSafe is the worst security system ever, thiefs actually prefer them over unsecured homes. Look it up.
Why are you deceiving your viewers to buy a scam product?
Still can't get over the fact that there are enough people with personal little trains to keep that shop in business. Honestly Joel this is legit my childhood/teen/adult dream ever since I first went to a coal mine
My time on the rails has left quite an impression on me as well
@Dead Memes Even if that is the case, i would prefer to keep believing that there are some 1% folks who have miles of private mini-train track running through their estate
@@epicthief Their has been in past at least. Walt Disney had one in the backyard of his home.
@@epicthief Little Amerricka started as a private track
You can make custom rollercoasters
There's nothing to stop you
There's videos of backyard rollercoasters
BIG BIG respect for you for actually asking and not just assuming that tracks are “abandoned” because you haven’t seen a train on them in 24 hours. And even more respect for actually listening and not doing it anyway.
You mean 24 minutes.
Wow
I'll note, train guys are some of the nicest people you'll meet. It's a hobby that's allowed me a lot of opportunity from the people I meet. Of note on wheels, I've avoided set screws. The wheels on my equipment are pressed onto the axles, then have weld behind that. Even at 7.5in gauge (Half the size of this), I've seen wheels wander. A belt and braces approach may help.
Or, alternatively, he could drill a few holes along the seam between the axel and hub, tap them, and put bolts in there. If you do it right it could work, but that's kinda tricky to do with a hand drill. What may be better is to grind a few 'flats' on the axel and key the hub so that the hub is taking the torque on the faces, not the set screw. combine this with a bolt in the end of the axel, some washers (and some loctite), and you can set the depth of where the hub sits on the axel with where the flats end using the shoulder that that'd make.
@@zerumsum1640 I reccomend against this. Even with Loctite, I've seen screws on equipment like this back out. Heck, I've had it happen to me.
@@MrRailroadrunner I mean, with a lock nut (not nylok, just a thinner nut) on a bolt in the middle of the shaft you can get it pretty dam secure. plus, threading direction can help with that. grinders have to deal with this issue and the solution there is make the thread so that the spinning shaft tightens it.
Hope Joel sees this
@@MrRailroadrunner most railfans are cringe ngl. ive met a few and all of them are foaming r3tards.
Oh my gosh I loved going to little America as a kid. When I saw it in the video I was like "no way is that the one I used to go to" but sure enough with a little Google search on maps it was super awesome to see that!
Haha same here, haven’t been there in ages!
same lmao kinda funny
Same. Little America used to be bomb. We didn’t go very often because we would always get lost on the way there, but now I live near there. Excited for part two.
Glad to see quite a few people know the feeling of going there!!!
Ah same! I remember when my grandpa use to to me out there as a kid a long time ago. Oh this brings back memories.
Duuuude I LOVE this thing! Freaking hardcore, so hyped to see the final version!
Let's goooo!
Let’s goooo!

Let's goooo!
Haha, get it? Hardcore.., it's a minecraft game mode....
Have I ever mentioned that set screws are evil? Well they are. Cross-drill the hub and shaft for a roll-pin, tapered pin, or bolt and it'll never come loose in the field. (making a clamp hub is better, but much harder to do without a welder or machine tools)
Fyi, using brake drums is brilliant. Amazing that they work so well. Should be a lot cheaper to get them finish machined as well.
Just use some of those little go kart spacer shaft keys. It’s a collar that slides on the shaft & you can lock it down rly tight cuz they have larger bolts.
@@michaelbenoit248 Go cart hubs are a good idea. They usually clamp on and are extremely solid. Don't know if you can find them for the axle diameter he used though?
This is awesome! I have a design for a solar powered rail car I hope to build one day. Brilliant idea to use the break drums as wheels! There's a few rails near salt lake you can ride with permission. I'm looking forward to the final result. Keep up the great work!
Thanks man! Would love more info on the salt lake rails
@@JoelCreates I think its called Nevada Northern Railway Museum. I may have been off by an entire state. lol
Someone has built and tested a solar powered rail cart somewhere in US. There are videos on UA-cam but I can't remember the name. They had to make a large surface area for the panels even just to move the carts weight plus one person. It looks a bit like those solar race cars in Australia.

This video is off the rails!
It's really nice for once to see a youtuber who want to make thing-that-goes-on-rails start with correct wheel geometry first without learning that the hard way after finishing everything else first.
Awesome project Joel! But also, CAN YOU FOR THE LOVE OF GOD STRAIGHTEN UP YOUR UA-cam PLAY BUTTON! IS DRIVING ME CRAZY!!!

I'm so happy to have watched this cannel grow to the point that you could not only afford to do this project but you're getting more and more sponsors. Great job man, and great video!
Joel, if you accidentally get completely hooked on small scale steam engines, I won't hold it against you. That stuff is so ccol. Stay in touch with those folks that showed you the workshop, it'll pay off.
omg at 2:17. that big loco has been in the works since like early 2020 but i didn't know the status of it until now. it looks good
A set screw is not going to be permanant enough. Based on my experiece with live steam models, even with the screw in a hole, it will still come loose. You're going to need something more permanant, like a pin, a rivet or welding. Glue is an option, but would probably not be enough on it's own.
I haven't played Minecraft, I've seen a few videos on UA-cam but I know the tie ins are wonderful.
Wow, that's pretty cool!
DDDDUUUDDDEEE!!!!! I WOORRRKKK THEERE AND ALEX IS MY BOSS! I LOVE RUNNING THE STEAM LOCOMOTIVES AND I WONDERED WHY I COULDNT RUN ON THAT DAY AND IT WAS YOU!! THATS SOOOOO COOOL!!

Way cool of the park to let you use their facility! I definitely want to add that to my list of places to visit. Is it Little Amerricka in Marshall, WI?
Yes, it is.
Yep!
My aunt used to work there
I just love the premise and vibes of this video so much.
"I like minecarts in minecraft so I wanted to do that in real life too"
And the property owners letting you use their tracks too! That is so sweet, I love that you're allowed to do that. Hope the rest of the project goes well, good luck!
I mean you could've just put 5 iron ingots on a work bench but this is cool too
Jokes aside, this is incredible
Jesus man, every video is just more and more impressive. I cannot wait to see what nonsense you're building in 5 years.
this is actually cool and underrated
Cross drilling for a pin is likely the better option, but if you grind an aggressive enough flat (like diameter/4) it should be fine with a set-screw and some loctite. I’d drill and tap a circular keyway into the shaft and drum you’d take care of the torque without having to worry about a pin shearing off, and maybe also add a pin to prevent it sliding down the shaft.
That train shop looks freakin cool! Slip in more footage of that for us in the comments 😉
its called live steam, you should check it out.
im really excited for this project!
So those doodle chaos video's can be recreated in real life!??!!
damn.
now i am very hyped for the next video.
Amazing work so far! I look forward to seeing the finished result!
Dude! Yes! I was trying to build a portable rail cart a couple years ago that could easily be carried, disassembled and fit in the back seat of my car. I managed to build a working prototype but it wouldnt have lasted long term Im sure. The wheels were one of the biggest issues. I wish I had known that Cavalier brake drums would be a good fit! Wouldve saved sooo much time. The other big issue was real tracks have a variance in distance between rails. Especially in abandoned tracks, where I had measured over 3" in variance in some places. So I had to concoct an expandable drive axle. It was rickety af and noisy but it worked. Watching this made me want to finish it...if I ever get the time. Pretty cool man. 👍
This was an INCREDIBLE video!
That electric motor is cheating! You really should have made the rails out of solid gold ;)
Yes let's aquire wheels!
*hyper focuses on the flange and dosent even mention the conical surface required for proper travel*
It's funny cus the proprietary drawings you saw most likely mentioned it xD
*also uses setscrews instead of pins to secure the wheels*
Do you want this to fall off the the track?
This is edited differently then your previous videos and its realllllly good. your old videos are still super good but in my opinion this is a good bit better.
2:19 I know this is off-topic but as a railfan I'd like to point out how stunning the 15" gauge 4-12-2 looks so far.
This was legitimately my childhood dream, to have a lil' train that goes anywhere the rails do
Amazing work, man.
The brake drums are inspired! This is so cool!
That ad integration is *chef's kiss*
I knew you lived in Wisconsin!!!! I live in the fox valley! Love your videos man!
That train shop is so rad! this is looking to be a good video.
Really cool cant wait to see the rest!
what a funny little chewing character
that’s sick
Thank you for bringing light to the live steam community these people spend there whole lives building these little trains
That track looks amazing :D
Awesome idea and build. Don’t grind flat spots. Use a drill and dimple the shaft. It will leave more material at the connection point.
my city is covered in abandoned trolley tracks, and they really are abandoned. they decommissioned all of the cars over 40 years ago, and most of the tracks have been paved over during regular road repairs. there are still entire sections of street though that have never been repaved and they just have random tracks on them
OMG EVERY KIDS DREAM WHO PLAYS MINE-CRAFT ITS SO NOSTALGIC I REMEMBER WHEN THE MINE CARTS FIRST CAME OUT I USED TO MAKE ROLLER COASTERS ALL THE TIME MAN THANK YOU FOR RECREATING THAT MEMORY
I love it! Can’t wait for the next one!
Make second cart connected to the back of it and solar power it for a whole day of fun!
Yes good
Fun fact: Minecarts exist in real life, and they are used to transport supplies out of mines, by being filled with ore and taken to the surface for refining.
Always good to get a Joel upload :)
This is one of the best Minecraft animations I've ever seen in my entire life, the texture is almost life-like.
This actually makes me wonder if there actually are places that let you build „your own train“ in this style over the course of a weekend or something. Could be fun
OH MY GOD THIS IS AMAZING This is litteraly a child hood dream coming to life I adore it!
Woah that train shop is CRAZY
Y'know, I never thought about low rides like that before outside of karts, but this already looks like fun! Astute work with the references as well.
I can’t wait for the final version because this is my dream come true!!!!!!!!!!! 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
There used to be a railways mod on Minecraft. A couple of them actually. One of them, Rails of War, allowed you to model standard gauge locomotives, which are double the size of minecarts. So it totally makes sense that a minecart would be about the size of a narrow gauge railway.
I watched the ad without skipping just because it was entertaining as hell. Good job I normally skip to be honest but you did a perfect execution
New to this channel and Im all in!

This is a great video! You need way more subscribers

those live steam trains are something that, when I'm old and retired, I hope I'm able to get into. They ain't cheap, but steam rail stuff is so neat and I'd love to be able to play around with one.

I love that you are a local UA-camr to me
Looking forward to the next part, best of luck with the build!
This is really really awesome, you've given us some very valuable information here and I hope to make use of it with my own railroad someday!
so excited for part 2!
Awesome! Now make the tracks go up to the world height limit and drop all the way back down to the ground, that would be cool I think
The llama sound at 9:22 got me good. *XD*
We need to invest in this!
I can't believe that youtube have a really skilled bunch
woah! another sadly underrated youtuber
Cant wait to see the finl product!
(BTW I am now subscribed!)
Do those brake drums have a conical taper to them? That's how actual trains stay on the track. You don't want the flange scraping the rails, that's a last resort really. It might be worth machining a slight taper if there's enough material there. Maybe take some measurements of the wheels that are meant to go on that track. Anyway, cool project! Hope everything works out. Stay safe out there.
yo for real, you're awesome.
Can you link the parts you used? They seem to be working well and I want to build an electric go kart at some point, and this is probably the best way to find good parts
This is an awesome project and I can't wait to see it's completion.
Sick, just be safe, Much love
Cant wait for part 2
Noice idea.
So cool! Can't wait for part 2
The child me is so happy right now.
