I've never played any mage in any souls game, so this time I'll try it out. It does look pretty cool from what I could see here, so I'm pretty excited to play myself in a few hours!
I hope you enjoy it! Have you started yet? How is it going? My biggest tip for anyone playing a souls game for the first time is never to get too greedy, trying to give an enemy one last hit before dodging is the hit which is going to get you killed! My second tip is never underestimate even the smallest of enemies!
1 and 2 was easy mode when playing mage. 3 suddenly flip the script and made mage hard mode by giving bosses lunge attacks when you’re far away. This one feels somewhere in the middle.
I'm planning to do the same when I get the disc on ps4. How do you go about it ? Do you use ash of war to change the scaling or did you buff the weapon using a spell ?. I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks
If you can find it, I highly recommend the carian sword you find mid game. It uses somber smithing stones, but doesn't need a ton of upgrades to be a viable melee weapon for a mage as it scales with intelligence
The first time I played Elden Ring I used your double greatsword build and ended the game easily with it. I didn't do a second playthrough after that. It's almost a year, and I am starting afresh as a mage using your video as a starter guide. Thanks (Y)
Rocking a mage for my first playthough of Elden Ring, which also happens to be my first venture into magic in any souls game, loving it so far! Though I wish there was a more satisfying way to progress my spells rather than sticking to one, Glintstone Pebble, for most of my journey!
Arc spells may be less damage efficient but their main application is defense (primarily in pvp), same as homing soulmass in ds3. Keeps you safe while you are immobile casting other spells.
I've been starting and stopping videos because I don't want to know some secret location that will "Make me OP" and then quickly spoil the experience. I wanted to learn descent starter techniques and make my way through the game myself. Exploration, discovery and challenge is why games like this exist. So I really appreciate your approach. Thanks.
Your guides already helped me tremendously on my BG3 Tactician playthrough. I just started Elden Ring as a Confessor and I’m getting slapped big time, I just need my magic so I‘m gonna start over as a Mage using ur guide - very excited to try!
While you're onto getting the Meteorite staff, there's a Rock Sling spell nearby too. Look for it, it's absolutely devastating. It also gets a 30% damage boost for the staff itself.
Thanks for the info. I'm trying a mage for my first run, I also chose the astrologer. I like the seed advice, I may restart to use that now that I understand the basics.
I chose the Vagabond as my first class. But I've been considering making a mage character, considering I've never made one in a souls game. Thanks a lot for the tips!
Magic is always my favorite playstyle. It's pretty close to perfect in this game. I barely ever run out of FP unless I'm being careless, and there are way too many good spells. It's hard to choose, and I keep thinking that I might come across a scenario where I would need a certain spell. Fortunately, we get new spell slots much faster in this game. I was a bit disappointed that they gave fire spells to Faith instead of Int considering that fire was Int based in Demon's Souls, but there are a few new types of magic for Int based builds to use. Stuff like Madness, Ice, and Gravity.
This video is amazing. It saved so much time for me and it is not complicated at all. I’ll try it out, my first mage run in all SoulsLike ❤️❤️ Thanks mate, you are awesome ☺️
Never really played the souls games but looking at them, especially this mage, it looks like upgraded castlevania 64 with no belmonts. I loved castlevania 64!
Thank you so much Fextralife. I took way too long making my character lmao I want to use magic but I also like swords. Can’t wait for the prisoner video frfr. I wasn’t even looking at that class because it looked funny but from using your wiki I found out that it’s the class I’m most interested. It takes time to do all of this and I’m thankful for your efforts ✊🏾💪🏾
I'm not sure how much Int you get from the glint crowns *haven't gotten one yet), but if your patient you can farm the Imp enemies in the Stormfoot catacombs until you get a 'Imp head(Cat)' helmet drop. Its heavy(8.1) but it gives +2 int. I got lucky on my mage on got one on my first kill in there. It is a fairly rare drop though. I know the academy headpieces give int, but they also lower either stamina or health as a cost.
@@rotn2013 If you've completed the academy, you can buy the Queen's set from the vendor lady with 2 heads at the round table. Her head, in addition to be STYLISH!!!, gives +3 INT.
Struggled to pick a starting class... I finally went with astrologer... and stuck with it. At level 20 now... was never a magic user thru any SOULS game... but I'm in love with the Mage gameplayvin this game 💯👏
Prisoner still makes an amazing Mage, in current meta he is actually the best starting mage because of the starting dex and strength (moonveil). Hold on to all scrolls and turn them into the turtle at the church as no matter the npc quests u break, he never leaves. You can actually get to him at the beginning of the game and unlock the grace up there
Moonveil gets shit on by Meteorite staff anywhere last 20int. Itll do 890 damage 5 times in 4 secs with a Raya Lucaria spell called "comet" and only 13 Endurance. With 30 endurance, terra magicka, Twinsage crown, and Pysick tear i can do 8 hits in 6 secs that do near 1400 each.
Your previous mage guide for the souls remake for the PS5 was very useful. Glad you also made a mage guide for this game too! Look forward to more mage guides and tips as I will play as this class.
Great video, about 15 hours in and 2 bosses down with my astronomer build. Going really well and also if you want to still have a melee weapon you can switch that staff to your left hand and equip a sword to your right to get the added melee damage

This is the first souls game that I actually plan on trying to beat, so this guide definitely helped me decide that I wanna play as a Mage! Great video!
Just started as mage and here is what I found. With base level staff you add +2 to attack per intelligence level up. As for scaling first attack gets +2 second attack gets +1 per level up. First upgrade to staff bumps it +3 to attack but afterwards goes back to +2 and +1 per level up. Example (base no upgrade level 25 intelligence 159 first hit, 124 second hit. First upgraded staff level 25 intelligence 162 first hit, 127 second hit.) Level 26 intelligence 167 first hit, 132 second hit with upgraded staff.
Great vid M8, i all ways play mage 1st run through, DS 1,2,3, but Elden Ring is such a new concept, with open world its very daunting even for a veteran. Im lvl 38 with meteorite staff, and thanks to you i will now search Out rapier, as i have +8 Rekardos, keep up the good work.
I just got into elden ring and have never played a mage class so this helped alot! 😊 always played as a knight either 1 hand sword or 2 handed weapons for all souls game btw lol
Meteorite Staff is not in the wiki yet. The location of where to get the Demi-Human Queen's Staff is not either other than it is starting equipment for the prisoner.
Thanks for the video and the tips!! I've been planning to main mage build on this game, and magic looks pretty strong too!! Excited to start playing it tonight after work.
Early pure mage comes down to 2 things...Meteorite Staff, Rock Sling. That spell and that staff will take you VERY far and sorta...spoils you a little.
Dude you sound just like Jamie (J Rogans producer) it's unreal Great video btw, I just started last night. Never ran a mage build in Souls so this is a huge change for me and your video is one of the very few that don't completely confuse newbs.
the clarity around the first staff you can get at weeping peninsula is just incredible. I got right to the spot, found the mini boss with no name and got my staff, thanks (not)
I'm going to do a int/str hybrid battlemage. Dunno how viable it is but i like to also fight in close combat and still use some spells. Instead of only spamming spells at range.
Big compliment to your build guides (again)! Perfectly structured and straight to the point 👍🏻 Maybe add some boss fight strategies for different scenarios into the beginner's guides, if you do the ober after some patch or so. I struggle in tight spaces with NPC backup (i.e. black knife catacombs) or very agile bosses (erdtree spirit).
So I started watching these videos because I have been trying to figure out what kind of build I wanted to do to actually "get somewhere" at first in this game (I freely admit I suck at Souls games) and I watched the video about "Classes" and then this one and one for confessor. I can say for the first time ever I beat a boss (that wasn't a tutorial boss) for the first time...okay it was the Groveside Cave (I think that's the name of it) before Stormveil but still...FINALLY TOOK ONE DOWN! And yes I am doing "Astrologer" right now. It's kind of funny how weirdly fun it is to play a "Magic class" in this game but then again I've tried Melee...got me NOWHERE so this works out Good job on the guide!
Going prisoner. I feel like having a reliable melee option in the beginning will help carry me until I can get some decent spells and I want to go more spell sword with dex anyways.
Well, honestly Dex is gonna be super useful for any casting class as it increases casting speed. Heck, weapon damage for Dez kinda soft caps at 40 while casting speed's bonus doesn't soft cap until 60, so your pure caster may actually end up with more dex than your agile fighter types.
Tip. Farm enemies for runes and invest in upgrades such as vigor or mind to increase your uses of FP and withstand attacks. You’ll not only improve as your farm, but learn enemy attack patterns to improve your skills.
Thank you for this! I’ve been considering buying this game but I’ve been putting it off because I wasn’t too sure how to actually play it. I’ve always struggled with souls like games but this video has convinced me to buy it and give it a go.
EVERYONE - THE METEORITE STAFF can be found SOUTH EAST of the [Aeonia Swamp Shore - waypoint]. There is a body hanging outside of a stone window. Dismount and walk along the outer edges to loot the body without having to fight the mobs inside.

I really wonder how the scaling with the ashes of war will work in the end. If you can achieve weapon damage scaling based on int or faith on the same level as classic str or dex scaling, I don't see the point of having str/dex based melee characters if int/faith also do the trick AND give you sorceries on top. Maybe the scaling won't be as strong?
depends, Int and faith scaling have split damage, so if you're fighting against enemies with int or faith resistance your weapon damage will do jack shit, so there's a trade-off there
Not only like Khai said split damage but dex/str boost defense too. And you don't need FP for like str/dex/quality build mostly. it will be the same as DS buuuut magic and bows are more viable. Which is good and fun!
as others have said the scaling is split and against magic/faith resistant stuff ur in a bigger pinch also, weapons that have split types can not have coatings applied to the weapon so those useful ones for adding fire or lightning damage to ur wep don't work here, you can also set those weapons to scale off normal stuff still and deal magic damage as far as I can tell. the magic ash of war lets u choose normal scaling still without adding magic damage to the weapon.
If you keep with the confessor, you'll get amazing offensive spells later on, especially if you kill a few dragons, and kill a few pyromaniacs... INT sorcerers only get offensive spells, faith based clerics or confessors get heals, crowd control, AND offensive spells.
Mage class has been considered the "easy mode" of any souls game and I really love how Fextralife gives us in depth analysis on pretty much the whole games of the series (DS series, BB, Sekiro and Elden Ring) appreciate all the walkthrough and knowledge you provide us, never change Fextralife, never change

My biggest tip for anyone playing a souls game for the first time is never to get too greedy, trying to give an enemy one last hit before dodging is the hit which is going to get you killed! My second tip is never underestimate even the smallest of enemies!
Until now I’m hating the experience to play as a mage
1 and 2 was easy mode when playing mage. 3 suddenly flip the script and made mage hard mode by giving bosses lunge attacks when you’re far away. This one feels somewhere in the middle.
Went through 2 runs in ds2 learning mage for elden ring
I’m doing a strength magic build for my first character and it has definitely been a challenge. These tips will help out for sure
I'm planning to do the same when I get the disc on ps4. How do you go about it ? Do you use ash of war to change the scaling or did you buff the weapon using a spell ?. I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks
@@Siuiop i'd say dex and int works best. dex decreases cast time (like in ds1) now so dex is a pretty useful stat to have

@@mooseroom oh there's definitely gonna be one. Every game has had it except sekiro I think
If you can find it, I highly recommend the carian sword you find mid game. It uses somber smithing stones, but doesn't need a ton of upgrades to be a viable melee weapon for a mage as it scales with intelligence
but what about your armor then? since u are mage dont u have disadvantage close?

The first time I played Elden Ring I used your double greatsword build and ended the game easily with it. I didn't do a second playthrough after that. It's almost a year, and I am starting afresh as a mage using your video as a starter guide. Thanks (Y)
Amazing layout and transitions. Perfect descriptions and straight to the point narrative.
Earned a new sub definitely coming back to this channel.
been here nearly 3 years--Fextra is all you need. ;)
Rocking a mage for my first playthough of Elden Ring, which also happens to be my first venture into magic in any souls game, loving it so far! Though I wish there was a more satisfying way to progress my spells rather than sticking to one, Glintstone Pebble, for most of my journey!
Later on you get better spells... I'm 30 hours in and pebble isn't even memorized anymore.
@@HMan2828 What is the better follow-up(s) to Pebble as one progresses the game as a spellcaster?
Arc spells may be less damage efficient but their main application is defense (primarily in pvp), same as homing soulmass in ds3. Keeps you safe while you are immobile casting other spells.
Yup. It's perfect for Crowd control when I have a group of enemies who are running at me. It's My "Oh shit" spell lol
This was such a perfect video for me. Thanks a ton
Thanks this is super informative compared to the “most op mage builds”
Love your video. I'm sat here starting Elden Ring for the first time, having no idea what to pick. And this helped me understand a bit better!
Starting a new character and playing astrologer as I was a samurai before…..this is a great guide! Thanks 😊
I just started up a 2nd character to play as a mage and wow does it make playing the same game completely fresh. So much fun, nice guide, thanks.
While you're onto getting the Meteorite staff, there's a Rock Sling spell nearby too. Look for it, it's absolutely devastating. It also gets a 30% damage boost for the staff itself.
I’ll be playing your Paladin build. You helped me heaps with D2R and I appreciate you here. Always entertaining.
I'm starting to play Elden Ring now with the release of the DLC and will use this as a starting build! Thanks!
Have you enjoyed it?

I started as mage, now I'm a mage with great curvesword from the riders. And their armor too.
I just started playing and picked astrologer! I’m glad I came across this video, it’s so helpful!
I chose the Vagabond as my first class. But I've been considering making a mage character, considering I've never made one in a souls game. Thanks a lot for the tips!
Same here, I just respecd my vagabond into a mage build mid game. Loving it so far
same here. love the vagabond
I did the same and spent 5 minutes looking at the start menu before i hit "new game". I have no regrets re-rolling with an astrologer.
@@andresperez6654 I tried that but I thought it would ruin my sword build. how is it?
I’ll try it out, my first mage run in all SoulsLike ❤️❤️
Thanks mate, you are awesome ☺️
Never really played the souls games but looking at them, especially this mage, it looks like upgraded castlevania 64 with no belmonts. I loved castlevania 64!
Handy guide! I've always found these games a little overwhelming but these guides you guys are putting out are helping me no end!
Thanks for the video. I was on the fence between confessor and mage. Now I think I'll be rockin' the mage class to start the game.

Thank you so much Fextralife. I took way too long making my character lmao I want to use magic but I also like swords. Can’t wait for the prisoner video frfr. It takes time to do all of this and I’m thankful for your efforts ✊🏾💪🏾
Going to try mage for the first time after hundreds of hours
I'm not sure how much Int you get from the glint crowns *haven't gotten one yet), but if your patient you can farm the Imp enemies in the Stormfoot catacombs until you get a 'Imp head(Cat)' helmet drop. Its heavy(8.1) but it gives +2 int. I got lucky on my mage on got one on my first kill in there. It is a fairly rare drop though. I know the academy headpieces give int, but they also lower either stamina or health as a cost.
Olivinus Glintstone Crown give +3 int
@@rotn2013 If you've completed the academy, you can buy the Queen's set from the vendor lady with 2 heads at the round table. Her head, in addition to be STYLISH!!!, gives +3 INT.
Struggled to pick a starting class... I finally went with astrologer... and stuck with it. At level 20 now... was never a magic user thru any SOULS game... but I'm in love with the Mage gameplayvin this game 💯👏
Same! I normally pick the knight , vagabond type .

Thanks a lot for this guide. Made me realize I probably won't enjoy pure caster, so I will follow the paladin guide instead. Amazing content as always

Thanks for the video. New to the Souls' series. Mage/spellcasters have always been my pick. The video was just what I was looking for ❤️.
I'm going to do a int/str hybrid battlemage. Dunno how viable it is but i like to also fight in close combat and still use some spells. Instead of only spamming spells at range.
Thinking about the same build, think good for start as melee and magic is prisoner or confessor
Spell spamming will be boring after a while, hybrid is where I’m going
Dex synergizes better with int
@@DG-nn8zt yes I wanna do a strength mage build too but would prisoner be better or no? I wanna be a in your face kinda mage
@@Webxhed It does, but only because of the casting speed. However it's not as fun as having a huge ass weapon but still being able to cast spells. :)
Your guides are going to be so crucial for my playthrough. Please do a prisoner build soon!
This was everything I could have wanted from a build guide. Thanks.
Big compliment to your build guides (again)!
Perfectly structured and straight to the point 👍🏻
Maybe add some boss fight strategies for different scenarios into the beginner's guides, if you do the ober after some patch or so.
It's kind of funny how weirdly fun it is to play a "Magic class" in this game but then again I've tried Melee...got me NOWHERE so this works out
Good job on the guide!
Going prisoner. I feel like having a reliable melee option in the beginning will help carry me until I can get some decent spells and I want to go more spell sword with dex anyways.
prisonner is better to play mage and sword?
I'm playing Astro now and the sword and buckler I started with is fine for a backup
Well, honestly Dex is gonna be super useful for any casting class as it increases casting speed. Heck, weapon damage for Dez kinda soft caps at 40 while casting speed's bonus doesn't soft cap until 60, so your pure caster may actually end up with more dex than your agile fighter types.
astrologer is actually a decent melee character once you get a turtle shell shield.
Then prisoner will give you wasted points in Strength, but play what you want of course.
I love seeing all the new people and saying this is there first souls game it’s awesome to see!!
The meteorite staff gets stronger with more int. I have 45 int and my staff's scaling is at 206
And so do all staves.
Playing a Mage at the start, thanks for the video, very helpful!
I am so bad at this game
Everyone is at the start. Keep going.
I thought I couldn’t beat the Tree Sentinel. Now I’m 50 hours in lol
It’s a hard game so it makes sense

How is it going?
EVERYONE - THE METEORITE STAFF can be found SOUTH EAST of the [Aeonia Swamp Shore - waypoint]. There is a body hanging outside of a stone window. Dismount and walk along the outer edges to loot the body without having to fight the mobs inside.
where in relation to [caelid highway south]? because thats SW of [aeona swamp shore]
it's in streets of sages ruins. NORTH of aeonia swamp shore or WEST of Inner aeonia.

@@julienc6178 maybe loot drops are randomized because I did not get my staff in the sage ruins. There I found the spell SLING ROCK
I don't subscribe to a lot. With that said, subscribed.
I really wonder how the scaling with the ashes of war will work in the end. If you can achieve weapon damage scaling based on int or faith on the same level as classic str or dex scaling, I don't see the point of having str/dex based melee characters if int/faith also do the trick AND give you sorceries on top. Maybe the scaling won't be as strong?
yeah thats what I've been wondering, would be interesting to do once more info comes out
depends, Int and faith scaling have split damage, so if you're fighting against enemies with int or faith resistance your weapon damage will do jack shit, so there's a trade-off there
Not only like Khai said split damage but dex/str boost defense too.
This is my fourth play through and All other times I’ve been more melee so I’m finally trying a mage build
Mage looks real interesting. Thinking of starting over. Confessor looks cool, but it’s boring me.
I did it yesterday, from confessor to astrologer, I do not regret, it's really cool

I am playing a mage named Gandalf. So I found a glitch, not sure how to replicated it but I was killing the giants pulling the cart and I would use up my mana bar and then dink my blue flask, after that noting used stamina. I could cast and run and roll nothing until I rested at the grace. I did this several times.

It’s because at that moment there’s no enemy’s who are aggravated into you,
It’s intentional.
Happened to me too. I killed one of the giant so the cart stops and when I go out of range to attack the giant don’t agro because he’s stuck
I picked the Astrologer because I wanted something different than always a knight or warrior. And I gotta say I like it a lot.
