      1st the word your looking for is Banzai not Kamikaze
      Banzai is the suicide charge where you die killing as many of them as possible
      Kamikaze is what Japan called their pilots that would banzai and the word means "divine wind" and these pilots would banzai charge the ships slamming their plains into them to do as much damage as possible
      2nd drone attacks with ships have existed for thousands of years with the first form being fire ships
      a fire ship is a ship packed full of explosive material and flammable material
      a fire would be started on the ship and the crew(everyone but the slaves rowing the ship) would jump into the water and swim back to their fleet
      once the fire spread to the flammable material it would spread to the explosive material and blow up the ship and spread the flammable material across the enemy fleet as the slaves chained to the ship would still be rowing the ship at the enemy ships
      the explosion would then spread the flames and flammable material to the other ships burning the people on the decks and causing fires to brake out on these ships
      at this point the fleet that launched the fire ship would engage the now burning fleet of ships and wipe them out during all the chaos of explosion and burning ships
      turns out if your an idiot is doesn't matter so long as your country is one of the few victories ones as history is writing by the victorious not the defeated

    A funny thing, and also a scientific fact: Due to the very low oxygen levels found at the seabed of the Black Sea, organic materials have a very low rate of decay. Meaning that we can see wooden ships from the Hellenic period, 400BC. Because of that, the flag on the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet should be flying for a few decades.

    The idea that because something can be destroyed means it is now obsolete keeps coming up in relation to the war in Ukraine. But that's not really how things become obsolete. Warships offer extremely useful capabilities and unless something else can do those jobs better they're not going anywhere. Instead navies will have to invest in protecting those assets.

      You are right generally, however this case may be the odd one out.
      The main advantage of warships is power projection, Russias Black Sea Fleet can’t do that. In this case, it has actually become kind of obsolete.
      On that note, big ships are also by nature big targets, I think they could also be obsolete generally in merely a couple of decades.
      Automated drone ships should become the obvious choice.

      Just hyperbolic morons who don’t understand the seesaw that is the “_____ vs Anti-_____” race that has existed since the Dawn of time.
      Countering drones is easy relatively speaking… it’s just expensive.
      Electronic warfare suites, more guns and so on. Russia can’t afford to add that shit to their ships, because they can barely afford to even keep the ships they have, maintained.
      It’s just going to require R&D to come up with the most efficient and cost efficient ways of countering drones.
      This should have been done half a decade ago… but unfortunately a lot of morons have been riding the stupid “Peace Dividend” for so long that they don’t understand the need to put MORE FUNDING towards R&D. This ain’t the late 90’s anymore fuckers, this is the 1950’s.

    Large blue water navies are completely different than those of the Mediterranean and other shallow waters.

    • @arthas640
      @arthas640 9 місяців тому +71

      People also tend to forget that the ships that have been sunk by drones were mostly in port: ie unmoving targets. They'd also been sitting there for a lomg time so it wasn't hard to know exactly where it would be and when, ans when it came under attack the ships couldn't go anywhere, and even then the Ukrainians got really lucky since the Russians had a bunch of their defenses deactivated and those defenses are, well, Russian, so you can imagine the quality

      ....yet.

    • @arthas640
      @arthas640 9 місяців тому

      @@2006gtobob They'll probably get there eventually but there are issues with long range drones that Ukraine is already dealing with. The signals can get jammed the closer they get to electronic warfare stations and jammers so they either need some way of operating without a signal, effectively turning them into guided missiles but without a missiles speed, or you give them some way of picking their targets with a targeting system but that also essentially turns them into a guided missile.
      This isnt a huge issue on land since there's tons of things like terrain that makes it harder to spot and target drones, so you can send the drone in close to the target before having to worry about a lot of that, especially since on land the targets are much more spread out. At sea though there's nowhere to hide, nothing to really obscure the drones positions, and the targets are pretty concentrated and since they're so concentrated it means you have to send those drones past more and better radar/electronic warfare stations in the form of screening ships and picket ships.
      For drones to be really useful on the open ocean they either need to be sent in swarms to overwhelm the enemy, something that we're already figure out ways to protect against, they need to be powerful enough to still maintain a connection which massively increases their cost, or the drones need to be smart enough to operate similar to how they would if they were controlled by a pilot and that's the tough part. Even if we plug ChatGPT into a kamikaze drone there's another issue in that all that technology will likely up the cost which reduces some of the benefits of a drone which means we also need to bring down costs on smart drones once they are developed. Similarly we could make the drones capable of overcoming the jamming but that's going to be expensive and unreliable since it could lead to an arms race of stronger jammers and since it's easier to fit a bigger jammer on a capitol ship then counter measures on a cheap drone that's less a less viable solution.

    One interesting point you forgot to mention at 13:00 is that Russia is actually capable of reinforcing their Black Sea navy with their Caspian Sea navy via the Volga-Don canal during the spring and summer months when the canal is not frozen. Ships from Russia’s Caspian Flotilla have played a direct role in supporting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine since 2022, and Russia has already invested over $1 billion in improving the waterway.

      That is true, but there are certain capabilities in the Black Sea Fleet which can be described as irreplaceable, which have been lost. Namely, the cruiser Moskva and her air defense systems. In addition, it cannot replace potential losses in larger ships such as the Admiral Grigorovich-class frigates, and I don’t believe the Gepards and Buyans have any serious air defense capabilities beyond self-defense. They’d be useful Kalibir lobbers, but not much more.

      If you want to deny enemy ships from an area away from your coast you'll need a ship on station to keep eyes and act as a drone/missile platform. That ship being vulnerable to attack is immaterial because you can't do it cheaper some other way. Big Guns were less effective than planes, so the battleship was replaced by aircraft carriers. The Neptune was completed before the invasion. Harpoon came after and was developed by the US, not by the UK. Development was not parallel; the Americans (through NATO) provided Ukraine the tech to make their own missile knowing the war would come by supplying some parts to appear less involved in the war, and the UK supplied Harpoon Missiles (provided to them by the U.S.) later.
      This is all from unclassified sources - including Wikipedia - with appropriate news references, dated articles and dated version history you can look at. (This is why Wikipedia provides you access to past versions of the articles so you can see what people edited/tried to edit and the date stamps to those old versions.) Neptune is actually better and more modern than the versions of The OLD Harpoon they were given.

    Remember, when they retreated from Kyiv and it's outskirts? Well back then they've been saying, that they didn't actually want to capture Kyiv, and nobody said anything about "Kyiv for 3 days". Same for Kherson, they said that they were going to stay in the city forever and organised the "referendum" about joining with the russia. In 2 years, with all NATO’s assistance in terms of reconnaissance, target designation, Starlink communications, the provision of drones themselves and other equipment, no more than 5-10% of the fleet’s ships were disabled. Mostly outdated and lacking protection from drones. In most cases, the ship's crew survived, that is, the ship fulfilled its last role as a combat unit. Or the ship was completely docked and had no protection. At the same time, missile ships and submarines of the fleet regularly destroy the fortifications of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with cruise missiles. As a result, thanks to its “successes”, Ukraine will be left without any access to the sea.
