      SPITE I really want your help with my Dads bike. He passed away a few years ago from Lou Gehrig’s disease and I really want to get it running again. It’s a cb750K. It’s only got 3,000 miles on it!!!!! All original.

    Just a word of advice to someone doing clutch plates, get a cheap micrometer, the final clutch stack height is important and can effect performance and wear significantly.

      Same with springs, measure length to determine if they are in spec.. another thing Spite could have done is .. not a biggie.. replace the clutch spring bolts w/ lighter titanium .. they are heavy and 5 add up.

    • @jeffryan7439
      @jeffryan7439 Місяць тому

      Does it?, only if it’s a whole lot too thick as it’s the springs that create the contact so it’s not critical

    I'm convinced that modern motorcycle clutches are almost not a wear item anymore. I've replaced bike clutches at around 40,000 miles as per the manual but the clutch plates would not show wear. Methinks you'd have to go back to used bikes made in the early 1990's to find worn clutch plates.

    I'm a fan of Ducati ThreeBond 1215.. aka ThreeBond 1215 sealant LOL for case to case sealing. Need just a small bead and your good. Couple of things you can do, not biggies.. replace the clutch spring bolts and caps. In the Hondas case.. a washer .. with TITANIUM.. 5 sometimes 6 SS clutch spring bolts & washers or "caps' add up weight wise. Next more importantly, with 50,000 miles, I noticed his clutch basket had suffered wear in the clutch plate tang slots. The "wear' is the friction plate tang battering against the basket.. which over time scallops the aluminum basket.. this scalloping manifest itself as ridges.. as the tangs wear, the gap between the tang and basket grows, and exacerbates wear and noise.. Take some emory cloth and lightly sand those ridges down a smidge. IF the scalloping is serious, and your feeling rough engagement when letting the clutch out, you realy should replace the basket. If your familiar w/ Ducati dry clutches.. they "Clatter" this clattering is the gap between the friction plate tang and basket.. as the plate tangs become worn from hammering the basket, this clattering increases. In a oil bathed clutch pack, you don't hear it though.. Just my 2 cents .. in a novel form...

    This is where having the service manual is useful. Torque specs, bolt specs, expanded assembly views. Very handy.

    Honda has the BEST oem clutch material ever. Actually, I've never seen a Japanese clutch that the aftermarket could complete with. Barnett in general has very grabby clutch plates.
    For a drag bike or some other use case where power output has been significantly raised, sure. For a daily rider or a single track woods bike I find them exhausting.

    With my extensive metallurgical expertise (i once heat treated and tempered some metal rods) so none, im wondering if a few heat cycles loosens up the new clutch springs a little? I just had a rekluse torqdrive clutch put in my RE865 and the first few days it was heavy. 1000ks later and it feels much lighter.

      That's why I went with anaerobic. It never hardens. Given the volume of oil it and the torque the parts of the motor impart there's no way it'll cause issues. It's the way I prefer to make seals with aluminum to aluminum.
