      Spite, people can say what they want but the Delkevic pipes have always treated me right. I will say though I had a set of CF shorties on my 919 and they were loud AF so be sure and put in the silencers, lol. I have a single oval CF on my 88 Hawk and it sounds sweet in a V-Twin Configuration! Also you might try some of the Hot Shot Secret for gas engines in the oil to help with the lifter noises and see if it helps over time. Great effort on suffering through the restoration of this classic!

    At the time , the V-Max with a slick and a jet kit and K&N filters was the quickest bike in a shootout for less than $1000.00 investment !
    The late Pee Wee Gleason tested all of the quickest bikes during testing back in 1986 . The time was in the mid 9’s at 143 mph !

    I have an Egli VMax in the barn, Fritz Egli was a legendary Swiss frame builder specialising mostly in frame kits for the evil handling Japanes bike of the 80's and 90's. He was a VMax fan, he didn't like plastic covered bikes and wanted to see the bits that make it work but he was a good racer as well so could actually make a bike that was fast and brutally cool. Mine is one of the rare race editions with unpainted alloy tank and seat and 149hp and it handles about as good as a modified old-school GS1000.
    The stock VMax isn't that bad, it's just been hyped up a bit by UA-camrs, same as the Kawa 2 stroke triples, you just ride them different. A bit of frame and swing arm flex is okay if you accept it's happening and the back end wants to slide under power.

    I've got a suggestion. Don't do hack work on your bike, especially the brakes. And the gaskets in the fuel tank sensors and whatnot. Were those new banjo bolt washers? If not, they're going to leak. Axle coning loose? Check that stuff before you roll out. Right now, I'm getting a salvage title Tuono 1100 V4, back on the road, and I've been tempted to just hack it together and ride it, but I can't do that, it's got too much potential. Just a suggestion, good luck.

    1 bottle of Harris 30% vinegar and fill rest with water to de rust tank. $20 job over a few days. +10 Internets for putting in the stainless braided brake line. Can't tell you how important that is for a safe restore. These old barn finds often need caliper and MC rebuilds in addition to the pads. Anyone looking to revitalize an old bike, should look at an older Yamaha XJ650. Much easier than the Vmax. Look for a bike garage kept and minimal exterior rust.

A friend also a former coworker "invited" me over to help him diagnose a problem with a friend's Ironhead Sporty. TBH a completely functional original condition Gen1 VMax is still likely to be the most dangerous motorcycle you'll ride. As a 15 year owner of a 2003 VMax owner and member of several VMax communities the most common comment for the VMaz is if you're riding it correctly it feels like it's trying to kill you. After that yes the oil light flashing regularly just means you know how to ride it

    @cyclonebuzz8172 Місяць тому

    I hate to tell you this, but you're going to have to pull those carbs back off. That's not a synchronization issue because the carbs are flooding out. You can hear it dropping cylinders and blubbering from too much fuel. More than likely, it's because because it sat up too long. The gas you buy at the gas station goes bad in about 3 weeks and it starts to turn to brown goo in 3 months. Even if you run the carbs (dry), there's passageways and other places that fuel sits. It will also coat the float needle, causing it to not seal. You can try sunoco 260 gtx or standard race fuel with a little bit of marvel mystery oil mixed to try to clean the carbs out.
    When you store any gasoline powered vehicles, store it with the race fuels or trufuel. You can use startron to delay the fuel turning, but it will go bad eventually. I don't recommend stabilizers because I have seen them turn fuel into a jelly multiple times.

    • @spitescorner
      @spitescorner  Місяць тому

      That would be true if I didn't run it every few days.

    • @cyclonebuzz8172
      @cyclonebuzz8172 Місяць тому

      @spitescorner That doesn't matter unless it's fresh fuel that hasn't been sitting. If the fuel you are running in it has been sitting in your gas can, then you are just running bad fuel through the system. I literally see this issue all the time because people think that just running the bike without riding it will keep the carbs clean. If you have been running fresh fuel and I assume the float heights are right, then it's more than likely the fuel pump. The pump has points that are supposed to shut the pump off when it reaches a certain pressure. I have seen aftermarket and old stock pumps over pressure the carbs. You can use a holley 1 to 4 psi regulator to fix the issue if a new yamaha pump isn't an option. The holley part number is 12-804. Also, down draft carbs are always on the verg of flooding out, and if everything isn't 100% perfect, they will flood out quickly. Double-check everything and make sure there's no trash in the system first. This is just my opinion, though.

    • @spitescorner
      @spitescorner  Місяць тому

      Well, I always run ethanol free gas in this bike which has a longer shelf life. Also the carbs are not set right. They have a bench tune on them, and they have been synced. They need to go in for one more adjustment. The idle is close to 700rpm which is far too low so it has to run with choke or throttle too keep from stalling. It will idle forever, but it just doesn't ride because the mix is so far out of whack. They run so rich you can almost smell unburned gas.

    Well done so far Spite with the resurrection of a 30 yr old Vmax. Keep going these were crazy in the day. Boring bit here, carburated bikes left for a long time need strip down and mega cleaning as they are vented to atmosphere and through time gas evaporates and leaves a thick gunge. Easy to clean the bowl and main jet but the pilot circuit can get clogged bad, poor idling and starting. I use carb cleaner and a compressor nozzle gun. Multiple carbs need balancing. Good luck. One of my bikes a Suzuki TL1000S hasn’t been used for 7 years. Changed the gas in the tank, new battery and starts and runs brill. It’s fuel injected so no evaporation of old gas.

    My equivalent was the time I went for test ride after replacing front disc brake pads on my Guzzi. As I’d pushed the pistons back to create space for new pads, my first two pulls on the lever had no braking effect whatsoever. But these first two pulls were only made as as I approached the busy T junction 400m from my house😖 In a panic, I lacked the presence of mind to pump that lever or even to use rear brake. I free-wheel turned right on to the main road staying as close as possible to the nearside kerb and the fast oncoming cars just missed me. They must have thought I was ***** crazy…and I think I wholeheartedly agreed. Next time, Ill do my post-maintenance test ‘ride’ in the workshop, NOT on the highway😐

    One of the dumbest things about the early Japanese bikes; synchronized carbs. A single, larger carb would have worked way better.

      Yep. I have an older Harley and I deal with it all the time. Usually they add a letter at the end.

    I'll pass on the first GEn V-Max.. Although they handle and Brake better than a Harley Davidson, they still are not that good.
