Qandeel Baloch-who was dubbed the Kim Kardashian of Pakistan-was strangled to death in 2016 by her brother Muhammad Waseem. The case was considered the most high-profile "honor killing" of recent years, where women are murdered by male relatives for purportedly bringing "shame" to the reputation of a family.
Baloch first received recognition from the media in 2013, when she auditioned for Pakistan Idol. Her audition became popular and she became an Internet celebrity. She was one of the top 10 most searched-for persons on the internet in Pakistan and was both celebrated and criticized for the content of her videos and posts.
Three months after Qandeel Baloch's death, Pakistan lawmakers responded to the public outcry and passed legislation against the controversial practice-a landmark ruling welcomed by rights activists and lawyers. However, Waseem has been freed by a Pakistan appeals court, three years after he was convicted of killing her for "bringing dishonor" to the family.
In her posts, Qandeel Baloch had spoken of trying to change "the typical orthodox mindset" of people in Pakistan. She faced frequent abuse and death threats but continued to post pictures and videos seen as provocative. Nearly 1,000 Pakistani women are murdered by close relatives each year, in so-called honor killings, for violating conservative norms on love and marriage.

My heart aches for her mother and father. Her father is a great man. Idk how I would handle this as a parent. The son also disrespected the father who allowed safe haven for his daughter and he has a right to his feelings. I like how the govt allows the father the ultimate decision and more a family matter that way, than a legal thing. I can't imagine their pain. A father and daughter have a very deep and special bond, just like a mother with their sons. I wish there was some way I could help provide for them in some way. And I would also like the name of the shelter for women who were raped too. I would like to help them too.

The father and mother kept changing their story when she died. I believe they knew what was happening. And Qandeels mom doesn't seem to be very emotional or upset by her daughters death. Also, her brother was pardoned by the parents and is now a free man.
Also the son lied when he said Qandeel was unconscious when he killed her. She was alive. Her face had so many bruises, her nose had flesh missing and there were cuts on her cheeks forehead. She will have tried to fight back. She was alive till nearly 12 o'clock. Because I was on her page. She was replying to people who were trolling her. Then around 11:45 her comments stopped.
I think within that time her brother may have come into her room.
Police also denied that she was beaten & tortured whereas the beatings could be clearly seen in her death photo.

It’s shocking to hear the rate of honour killings. She definitely pushed the boundaries too far in a strict society. The moment she filmed herself with the cleric for publicity put her life at greater risk. It’s a shame she knowingly took such a risk in her environment. I'm an Indian woman and understand the conservative societies shown in this documentary. Having remained single and now in my 40s, I have grown to realise something else. It's often the younger men who expect women of their age to follow the strictures of a patriarchal society and fulfill their expected roles of marriage, motherhood and serving family as a good wife/mother/daughter-in-law, because the whole system serves these men. Once the men grow older, like Qandeel's father, and they are no longer "competing" with the young women and expect them to be their chattel, their views often grow more progressive and they understand the women's need to be their own person and live their own life. I've seen this change in my own father as he grew older, but unfortunately, society can have a greater say in some women's lives like Qandeel. RIP brave girl

The Brothers & parents who murder their kids, how can you plan & carry out the murder of a child you brought into the world/ a sister you grew up with. The paper who printed her passport are disgusting, they're gonna know what the effect of that is. But selling papers is more important.

There is so much wrong with what happens in Pakistan "in the name of Islam" that is in fact cultural and not religious. The Balochis are particularly guilty. Despite having access to girls (not women) as wives from age 12. Throughout Pakistan men develop inappropriate relationships with boys under the age of puberty. I was also propositioned by many Balochi men when I worked in Dubai. Everyone turns a blind eye to these things, then act all contrite when a girl acts like poor Qandeel.

The two faced, lying clergy and Waseem should have hanged with no delay. The clergy was only too happy for Qandeel to sit right next to him with no jijab!!

This is not just about women or anything to do with culture or religion. It's to do with the fact that, poor girl was born in a poor family and then everyone wanted a piece of her, used her and she was abused and used for their own gains. From her family to each and everyone. She did nothing unique or different because drinking, smoking vulgarity, dance and what not is common among elites and rich but the only thing which took her life is her bad luck to be born in poor family. If she was from uper class or did what other girls like Iman Ali did, she would also be in Dubai living luxury life. This has to do with social injustice.

After watching this documentary, I want to add one thing: it's often presented as if all women in Pakistan face restrictions. My brother, that's not true for all women. Only women from middle-class and poor families face all these laws and restrictions. The women from rich families in Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi, where the big tycoons reside, drink alcohol, smoke, and openly go to pubs. Everyone knows about their activities, but no one has the courage to speak up. The fact is that Qandeel belonged to a poor, middle-class family, which is why she was killed. If she had belonged to a rich family, I say no one would have dared to even look at her.
