Jailed for running away from home to escape abuse, for allegations of adultery, premarital sex and other "moral crimes," the women of Afghanistan's Badum Bagh prison band together to fight for their freedom.
Produced and directed by Tanaz Eshaghian, "Love Crimes of Kabul" follows three young prisoners as they go to trial, revealing the pressures and paradoxes that women in Afghanistan face today, and the dangerous consequences of refusing to fit into society's norms.
This riveting documentary straightforwardly captures the Afghan theocracy's soulless treatment of women (and men) who show human affection and express the love in their hearts. Moreover, it reveals how religion-based laws have corrupted those relationships into exploitative prostitution, and turned judges, clerics, parents and relatives into pimps.

Life could not possibly be worse for women in Afghanistan since the Taliban returned to power. Women can’t work outside the home. They are not allowed to attend secondary school, and are regularly checked for signs of puberty. They are abused, murdered, even stoned. The rates of suicide are the highest in the world. Absolutely heartbreaking!

After watching this, I realise how much I take for granted. We always think we have problems but these women just make me cry a river. Like no life, no freedom, even if they want to be something it's impossible and dangerous. Life gives me opportunities everyday. Many don't even have that.
I’ve never been happier being born in the United States after seeing this and never more sad after seeing this documentary. These poor women.
Being a woman born in the U.S. is a true blessing. I chose my career, dated and married who I wanted, and my daughter and son can do the same. I showed my husband this documentary and he was in disbelief over the the content within it. Many of their tribal beliefs have nothing to do with the Quran.

After watching this story I've been left with the impression that none of these relationships are really about love but rather about MONEY & personal vanity. If this is the culture surrounding marriage in this part of the world then I can only say thank you God for saving me from such foolishness & misery by granting me peace, security & the freedom of living in a country such as Canada.
And don't forget it's also about total control of women and their choices. A totally insane society.

The sad thing was neither of them had another choice, but I know one thing, had this happened anywhere else, Kareema would have been a single parent. At first, I really felt bad for Kareema, but as her story started to unfold, the more things started to seem calculated. She told Firuz if you don't marry me, I'll have you locked up. She didn't say it was because she was pregnant, she said it was because was in love with him and couldn't deny it. When they got married, she said she asked for 30K because she wanted to be married forever and he should want to be married forever, too. Tbh, she seemed obsessed with him, and for Kareema, the pregnancy had little to do with the reason why she wanted to marry him. It's okay to be in love, but you can't trick or manipulate someone into marrying you. That's just crazy.
I think if they hasn’t been subjected to such stringent laws there wouldn’t be a need for her to be so calculating.
Afghanistan is very corrupt. If you had, say like $500 US dollars you could bribe the guard release the girl, pick up her man and drive to a nearby place say a normal Muslim country and free them in one day.

I love the Afghan people the women are so fierce. I've never seen any other types of likable Muslims under the sun.
It's not just the Taliban, Iran, Iraq, Indonesia, UAE Saudi, they are all of the same mentality that's called Sharia Law.
Those were only the elites propped up by the Shah of Afghanistan (similar thing in Iran) who wanted to be like western royalty, completely cut off from the realities of society. This video is pre Taliban takeover they have nothing to do with any of the things that happened.

I’m afghan and I say it the religion completely. Before Soviet invasion, women didn’t have to wear hijab and could wear skirts but after Islamic revolution in both Iran and Afghanistan, country went to shit because Quran has texts that allow for this kind of behavior.

I can understand the culture a bit since I am from India but this is extreme to a point of unbelievableness. Afghans seem to follow culture and belief more than religion. Religion is not hard on people wanting to marry.. or if they are in hardship they have the right to speak out and express their feelings.

I really feel sorry for Kareema, firuz parents specially the mum already hate her before even getting married just because she is Hazara , and they already planned for him to get a pashtun wife.. they ignored the fact their son is a drug dealer and they put all the blame on her while saying he is completely innocent while in fact they were both to blame for committing zina .. how sad , I hope she is doing well in her life 😢
Much as I dislike the idea of a bride price, what I didn't get was Firuz's family claiming they couldn't afford for Firuz to marry Kareema yet they wanted him to marry a lawyers daughter. Where were they going to get the money for that, if they couldn't afford Kareema? Surely a prize catch like a lawyers daughter would attract an even bigger bride price? Someone wasn't telling the truth there!

I feel bad for the true victims in this documentary but Kareema is NOT a victim but a stalker who got to marry her prey. She is clearly unstable and controlling. But since it’s okay for the men to victimize their women it’s rare it goes the other way around.

He had sex with her and got her pregnant and when she asked him it didn’t look like he was willing to marry her.. considering her father who wants money through her, she would’ve been compelled to marry someone else and even if she did, when the guy finds out she is not virgin, she will be stoned to death… so her only option is to lock the guy who took advantage of her..

The Government of Afghanistan and its law is the stupidest thing ever. They even don't understand whom to arrest and whom not. And the families are really dump of those stupid pride they call 😏 Sometimes, it is a shame to be Afghan.

I feel so sad for those beautiful daughters, and sons caught in the horrible, harsh, unfair system. If it was up to me, I would adopt those beautiful daughters for our sons here. We can look after them and love them, give them the freedom to love and be free.
Am I the only one who thinks that Kareema is a bit psycho? Clearly the only reason the guy is marrying her is to avoid 15 years in prison and she’s at the courthouse arguing about getting a dowry and gifts. I don’t think she realizes the gravity of the situation. He and his family will make her life unbearable.

This both angered me and upset me. I am saddened for all the people living in such dire circumstances and conditions. With regards to the women and how they are destined to be sold by their family. Their lives are not their own. No rights no freedoms. Destined to be sold and become a sex slave a cook a cleaner and baby maker. My heart aches. All these thoughts that I have about the world the human race and how far away we all are from what we should be trying to achieve. May god bless everyone . I am not rich in monetary value but I am rich with freedom with love and with the blessing to choose whom I love and to give my daughters those same opportunities and rights.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if they had freedom flights for all the oppressed women in Islamic countries, and all the so called asylum seeking men (90%) were all sent back?? I would welcome women and children and house them in hotels, than the backward thinking oppressors that have washed up on our shores, in the last few years.

I just love Aleema, what an amazing young woman. I'm so proud of her for being strong in her convictions even under such an incredibly unfair situation. I hope she's not been harmed by anyone since this was filmed. I have the same hope for all these women, what they live under is so unfair that they really can't win. I wonder when this was filmed and where they all are now. I fear things have gotten far worse since then.
