I'm a newbie to all of this & that was a nice easy vid to watch on the 206 without a load of ummmm's & errrr's like other vids that make them twice as long. well done. .
Have kept coldwater fish for years but only recently ie last month changed from an internal to external filter (the 106)...now about to do my 1st maintenance clean and so glad I watched your video, you've made it look so simple! Thanks!
Outstanding video. Takes you step by step on everything you need to know. I refer back to it every time I clean my Fluval filter just to make sure I don't miss anything. Thanks so much!
This is the second time I've cleaned my new fluval 206 and watched your video. I did it alone today. Your video really helped my husband and I on the first cleaning, you're wonderful and muchly appreciated in this house. I wished I had bought the Fluval 306 but hind sight is 20/20. I ordered the fluval 74 in tank filter to make up for it. My tank is goldfish so you can't over filter a gold fish tank, big eaters, big poopers. Anyways TYSVM.
Ugggh you are my hero, also a newbie with my first champion filter. Had to give up for a day bc I couldn't for the life of me open the 'easy open tabs' I really love this video. Everything made easy! I managed it right away after seeing how you did it!
I clean my 406 a hand full of times but never the impeller ....... it started making a rattling noise until I saw this video, took it apart for a clean ..... back to flowing smooth and quiet ...... thanks for making the video
Many thanks for that video... it was wonderful. I striped and cleaned a Fluval 306 that someone had left on a tank that was neglected. It was like pure soil coming off the filter media. Its all done now along with tubes cleaned etc.. fantastic, working a treat 👏. I've subscribed and will be looking through your other clips for more advice. So helpful, so straightforward.... many thanks, 😃
The one part you did not clean and did not mention was the hoses. I have a 206 and I find that if I clean it, as you have done to restore it to full flow the moment I turn it back on I get a whole load of mulm and film coming out of the return and into the tank. The dirt builds up on the inside of the hoses and as the flow reduces when it's getting near to cleaning time the more the mulm settles in the hoses. After cleaning the filter media and impeller the water flow is returned to normal and the additional pressure pushes the mulm back into the tank. Other than that, excellent video, very clear and concise.
Good video. Only thing you missed was the actual hoses. I take all the hoses to my local car wash, and hit them with the high pressure sprayer. Since the hoses are ribbed, they tend to collect muck. Quick and easy way to get them very clean! And always remember people, never rinse your media in tap water. TANK WATER ONLY!
Ryan Lee Isn't that a contradiction though? You rinse the hoses with tap water unless your local car wash uses RO water or something I've never heard of. Tap water is still being used in your cleaning of at least part of the filter system.
K Ma He said don't rinse your media in tap water. The hose is not 'media'. It's perfectly fine to wipe down the plastic with some tap water, including the hoses and the intake/outake pipes. As soon as you get the pump running the conditioner will hit it and remove any chlorine. The bacteria sits mainly in the media and foam which is what you want to be careful with.
The pipes are like the waste pipe on a washing machine. You don’t need to clean them as it will take 10 years to block, just replace them every 5 years or so
ROFL - "Disgusting! How's that supposed to suck up dirt if it's full of shoite!?" Thanks for the video - trying to weigh up 206 vs Ex700, this has been really useful :)
Thanks for posting - was both informative and hilarious. Right now I simply can't pull the motor assembly out of the cannister so going to try following this vid and see if that does the trick.
I did this for the first time in about a year. I got the filter from a friend. I don’t remember her showing me how to do this so thought I’d give it a go. Sure enough it all came apart. Now my Fluval won’t pump. I put it all back together right. Even watched this video to confirm. I screwed something up. Maybe the dirt was holding it all together, heh. Will be calling my friend tomorrow to have her look
I have watch your video and its very helpful. However, i have problem removing the aguastop valve and i saw a build up of scale. What should I do? Please kindly help me. Thank you
Thanks for making the "priming video" I was thinking my 106 was broken and just didn't know what to do, until I saw your video! I have a question.... I have seen and read about the previous fluval models having a bypass problem, do you think the 06 models have this problem? Thanks Brandon(EMTinHawaii)
Fluval should really make a cleaning kit to help clean the intakes. I made a cleaning kit for my intake a new paint brush, toothbrush and a 2feet long baby bottle brush found on eBay works great
Hi, Thank you for your video. Very informative. Can you please tell me how you took apart the intake strainer thing. I would like to remove the check ball on my mine to getter some better water flow. Thank you
The backflow ball on the intake of my 406 (purchased September, 2016) does NOT come out... the piece that holds it is a single, sealed piece now. I used an air compressor to blow out as much gunk as I could, but apparently Fluval have changed their production a bit. Otherwise it seems to have not changed a bit... thanks for the video
I have this filter too, but from what I have read the canister needs to be below the tank. Having it at the same level as the tank, have you had any issue with this?
Hi, I notice that you didn't mention about cleaning the O ring. Do you need to to apply lubricant around it? I've had a few leakages due to the positioning of the O ring, Any advice?
Very helpful as I have recently got a 90ltr tank with a 106 filter unit and it is chuffing minging! I plan on replacing the hoses and attachments as well as renewing all the media. Any suggestions as to the media I should use for a simple cold water tank? Using tap safe solution and running the tank for at least a week before introducing fish. I have 2 baskets and the sponge holder thingy.
It is always important to remember that bacteria are part of the nitrogen cycle which is why the filter should not be sanitized. I have never seen those ceramic like cylinders before. Are they used as a place for the bacteria to grow? I used to use bio-beads which were for just that purpose. Also, all of the filters I have ever seen say to change the foam that filters physical products out of the water, but I noticed that you rinsed and re-used it. Can it be used until it wears out or should it be changed on a regular basis? Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Yes those ceramic cylinders have the same function as the beads but provide a much larger surface area. As for replacing the filtration media, they would recommend to buy new as that's how they make their money! I always rinse it until it starts to fall apart, then replace it, this usually takes a few years! Thanks for watching
I am having some issues removing the checkball, I can separate the strainer and the checkball section but then ball sits in another plastic enclosure which is not coming apart, I'm afraid if I put too much pressure on it, it may snap. Any tips? Thanks
We just purchased this 306 and it's placed below the tank and set up exactly - yes, it sounds like marbles, and no water is coming out of the outflow tube. How long will it take to start shooting water out of the outflow and stop making the noise from the intake? Really a day or more? Do I leave it on? Or stop and start it? Appreciate your help.
Stephen Lyon I guess you have sorted this but for anyone else, the noise is trapped air, it will be clear in a few minutes. This guy has another video on priming the pump which forces the air out.
Give it a little finga!!! Lol lol But seriously what about the little gray knob on the top of that that you pump up and down to get the air... out do you leave it down or up?
Hi, great video. I recently bought a 306 and it's due it's first clean. I notice you switched off the power before closing the valve but the manual says to close the valve before switching off the power?
Is that just a second tray of biomax or is it a different type? Do you recommend using a second tray? I got my first tank and filter a month ago second hand and the previous owner just had carbon in it permanently in the second tray.
Big fan, great videos have watched all of them, but same as someone else mentioned, I cannot take the ckeck ball out to clean as its got a guard round it, have tried pulling and twisting but no joy, any advice thank you in advance.
if you take a small screw driver you can pry the two pieces from each other then the ball comes out. go slowly and you should get it open, ill do a video on my channel if you want
Great vid, when you set up this filter did it make a bit of noise for a few days? Set mines up today and it's pretty noisy..I've shook it etc to get put trapped air but it's still fairly noisy...
Hi! cool video, I have a question, and sorry for my english. I´ve an aquarium of 100lts for 2 turtles, I´ve an internal filter but i think that isn´t the best option, because a few days after I change the water this lost clearly, so I have to replace the water again, Im thiking to buy a fluval 206 but the capacity of this filter is 200lts and my aquarium its about 100lt, so I dont know if the filter can be damage for the over capacity, and I want a filter low power energy, I think that the fluval its OK, what do you think? thanks!
Thank you for the video! I have a 306 and love it.- How did you get your lid to remove so easily? Mine seems so hard to get off. I have tried the primer position, but it just seems to be holding a vacuum. Would be so much easier to clean if I could figure this out :/
Everyday Aquarist Yeah I have been doing that and it works. What I did just find made it easier (answering my own question. Lol) was if I take one of the side clips and click the top of it in, flare the bottom of the clip out, and hold the bottom of the canister while pulling the flared bottom of that clip, it seemed to slip right off. Also I had the siphon stick pulled up. Thanks you for the quick response though! :)
after rewatching your video i think i flipped the last sponge that goes under the media...upside down..and my canister then pushed a bunch of gunk back into the tank :(
i did exactly what u did with my canister filter...and i'm not sure if i didn't clean the sponges correctly because when i put everything back together and restarted the canister it shot out a TON of debri, almost as if i flipped the sponges around and allowed the canister to push everything off of them back into the tank! should i ever put new sponges??
Hi. When cleaning any filter you will dislodge some debris. Happens to everyone. It will clear within a few hours. Happened to me after this video was made. Now my tank is again, crystal clear
Thanks for the response...tank is clearing up...but i think my new driftwood is also letting off a little brownish stuff...going to take them out and scrub em down..thanks for the video again
Hi, I cleaned the filter (over cleaned it) I watched your video after. But I put it back together how it came apart but now it won't work. When I pump to get the water flowing nothing happens and if I turn it on it makes a noise similar to what I imagine marbles in a hoover sounds like. Any suggestions please?
It sounds like you have not put your impeller back properly. That's the bit that looks like a propeller. It should have a white stick that goes through the middle. The stick should sit in a little rubber bit inside the hole. If it is put back wrong the impeller can rattle around. To get it re primed with the primer pump can be difficult, but just keep pumping away with it turned on, eventually it will get going. Hope this helps.
Hello quick question...I've been looking online but can't seem to find an answer. I just bought a 306 about a week ago and I notice that the intake isn't very strong. Large debris float passed it and don't get sucked in. Does yours do that too or is it just something I'm doing wrong? I'm using the media that was included with it so I haven't overdone anything on that end. Any info will help thank you!
Hi, the intake and flow isn't hugely strong but I find that anything large like leaves etc will get sucked onto it if they get close. Maybe check your flow valve on the filter, it's the white/grey handle on the top. It needs to be all the way down. Filters work on the basis that all the water will eventually get filtered at some point within a specified amount of time; so sometimes they may seem to be weak flow, but they aren't meant to be as strong as a hoover sucking in everything that comes close. I hope that helps.
You really wouldn't want one that strong of a suction. Remember you have fishes swimming around and if the current is too strong, it'll draw them towards the intake valve and they wouldn't have the strength to overcome the suction.
Everyday Aquarist Thank you very much for the information. I found my problem - the cover that goes over the impeller wasn't ''clicked'' in. For some reason mine doesn't just snap in like yours - it needs a little bit of force. Once that was fixed the intake seemed to be stronger and I saw the particles actually being sucked in unlike before. Thanks again!
Do you empty the tank, as well for maintenance, cuz i do, but i have a turtle not fish< I just wanna ask how big must the tank be for this filter, is there a minimum size for this kind of filter? I want to change the filtration system and have something more powerful..Thanks
+Kelly Tynes - Peissner I have shrimp they are adults and jeuvenilles they dont get in it but they do sit on the intake as they like to catch the flow of particles. Only thing you will have to watch for is fry, they would get sucked in
I have a 305 which is kind of the same principal. After disconnecting the hoses, I cannot get the lid off because of the vacuum. How do I get past that??
Everyday Aquarist Thank you for the suggestion. I will try that in next cleaning as I am venturing out and am going to hook it up again. Hopefully with no leaks this time.
Is there another style of impeller? I bought a 306 second hand and the stick and propeller come out, but it leaves the magnet part of the impeller behind... I don't know if it's made like that or if it's seized up in there
Only reasons flow would be bad are That the impeller is broken or not fitted properly, the filter is clogged or blocked, or you haven't put the grey flow lever down
Hi, i just want to check where is the o-ring of fluval 206? 'coz i think that's the reason why my filter is leaking i think i need to put lubricant in it. but i can't seems to find where it is. thank you.
Everyday Aquarist is the o-ring different from the motor seal ring? 'coz i can't find where the that o-ring is. or maybe it is missing in my 206 coz i didn't bought it as brand new. thanks for the reply.
Everyday Aquarist okay so there's only 1 o-ring/rubber gasket in the 206. so i guess something is really wrong with the 206 that i bought. 'coz i bought the fluval lubricant and it still leaks.changes all the media and even bought a new hose/tubing. smh... i guess i should've tried if first before buying the stuff....
Thank for sharing. This was the only video I could find that was straight to the point.
You literally just saved me $150. Thanks for taking the time to do a full and complete video! Subscribed!
Real explanation of what to clean and how to clean it. Thank you.
I like you style of delivery - real talk, very entertaining...keep it up!
Thanks
Thank you so much for this video - it was easy to follow and my filter and fish are now happier for it!
I'm a newbie to all of this & that was a nice easy vid to watch on the 206 without a load of ummmm's & errrr's like other vids that make them twice as long.

Just got my fluval 206 yesterday. It's so quiet. Love fluval filters. Thanks for the cleaning video.

Thanks for the very comprehensive tear down. I just got the 406 and your tutorial is very helpful.
Mate you are an amazing person at de-mystifing the process great stuff
thanks so much for this video. i didn't know the intake could come apart like that. i've been trying to pass a Q-tip to clean it out
Just got done cleaning my Fluval 306 after watching this and it helped a lot. The filter is now shite free, ty sir
vsx1 Sweet
Very well done, EA. Concise, to the point, and easy to follow. TYVM
Nice well presented vid, many thanks. Love the giggle when instructed to give it a good finger LOL
Just wanted a look at the fluval 306 internals, and this covered that very well. Similar in principle to my current API filstar XP.
Thanks very much my man for this...and getting the filter started too.
These little tips really make the difference.
Much appreciated :-)
Good video ..... I have three Fluval canister filters and they work great - I have had my Fluval 205 for 15 - 20 years and it still works great !
Thank you
Great video. I think part about cleaning impeller should stress to be careful because that ceramic shaft is a pita and easily breaks.

Thanks for posting - was both informative and hilarious. Right now I simply can't pull the motor assembly out of the cannister so going to try following this vid and see if that does the trick.
Thanks for that, very insightful, I've never cleaned the last thing that popped off across the floor. Will need to do that next time. Cheers
Thx for the video great one, good you said the part about not sterilized the foam 👍
I just ordered a 306 and it looks like it will be easy to clean. Thanks for the video.
Great video, just got my 406 and this was extremely helpful. Thank you very much.
I'll watch out for fry. If I think they are about to hatch babies, I'll put a foam filter on it. Thank you!
Thank you!! Much easier to see an example than trying to interpret the instructions.
good video!!! shoutout from colorado!
Brandon's Turtles I’m from colorado too!
I have watch your video and its very helpful. However, i have problem removing the aguastop valve and i saw a build up of scale. What should I do? Please kindly help me. Thank you
Great vid, I was about to do way too much work.
THANK YOU!!! From Santa Rosa, California.
No problem, thanks for watching
Great video 📹
Thanks for making the "priming video" I was thinking my 106 was broken and just didn't know what to do, until I saw your video! I have a question.... I have seen and read about the previous fluval models having a bypass problem, do you think the 06 models have this problem?

Brilliant video, thanks :) When doing a water change, is it possible to drain the tank using this filter?
Merci! C'est simple mais tous les détails importants sont donnés. Au boulot maintenant pour mon aquarium :)
This video has no business being this fucking funny
Fluval should really make a cleaning kit to help clean the intakes. I made a cleaning kit for my intake a new paint brush, toothbrush and a 2feet long baby bottle brush found on eBay works great
Thanks for the video just one question u said. Cabron has to be change every month or every 6 months thanks advance appreciate the video
Do you discard the water in the bucket after you’ve cleaned the filter, allowing the filter to refill with water from the aquarium?
Hi, Thank you for your video. Very informative. Can you please tell me how you took apart the intake strainer thing. I would like to remove the check ball on my mine to getter some better water flow. Thank you
It should pull apart from the main tube.

Muito obrigado, ajudou-me demais para a manutenção do canister Fluval 406.
Hi, great video. I recently bought a 306 and it's due it's first clean. I notice you switched off the power before closing the valve but the manual says to close the valve before switching off the power?
Dean Howard Either is fine.
Solid tutorial.
you forgot to show how to open the lid. I don't drain it first as it doesn't leak upon opening.. nice vid mate
Is that just a second tray of biomax or is it a different type? Do you recommend using a second tray? I got my first tank and filter a month ago second hand and the previous owner just had carbon in it permanently in the second tray.
Sean Sheedy I prefer biological media to carbon
How do you remove the hoses (intake and output) without getting water everywhere. As the water remains in the hose.
I lost the white stick for the propeller. What is that thing call?
Big fan, great videos have watched all of them, but same as someone else mentioned, I cannot take the ckeck ball out to clean as its got a guard round it, have tried pulling and twisting but no joy, any advice thank you in advance.

This video helped realize my filter doesnt have a propellor. Makes sense why it doesnt work.
An impeller definitely helps
Great vid, when you set up this filter did it make a bit of noise for a few days? Set mines up today and it's pretty noisy..I've shook it etc to get put trapped air but it's still fairly noisy...
Glasgow 786 Yes it will go away
How long roughly did it take? Sorry it's just my tank is in my bedroom & that noise is such a headache! :)
Glasgow 786 About a week
Very informative video.

The Fluval external filter, can be placed on the same level of the aquarium? Because I don't have space under the tank, and I need a new filter. :)
Alexandro Bu Most people and the instruction manual say no. However mine has breen like this for two years now with no problems.
Thank you :)
Thank you for the video! I have a 306 and love it.- How did you get your lid to remove so easily? Mine seems so hard to get off. I have tried the primer position, but it just seems to be holding a vacuum. Would be so much easier to clean if I could figure this out :/

Happens to me but I found out it was the hose that caused all those debri.
Juran Max I'm surprised at the amount of stuff that comes out all the debris
we have a fluval 306, how do I clean the water inlet / outlet tubing please ? I know how to clean the cannister and media.thanks.Fionw

To get it re primed with the primer pump can be difficult, but just keep pumping away with it turned on, eventually it will get going. Hope this helps.
I have this filter but broke my red clip . any idea where i can order a new one
Sweet
Very helpful thank you
Bought this for my RES and the water is leaking out. What do you suppose I did wrong with my set up?
Zetalady05 Take it back and get another one
Do you empty the tank, as well for maintenance, cuz i do, but i have a turtle not fish< I just wanna ask how big must the tank be for this filter, is there a minimum size for this kind of filter? I want to change the filtration system and have something more powerful..Thanks
STILLDecibel Hi. I usually do a water change when I clean my filter. The 106 can be used on Smaller tanks than 125s.
Everyday Aquarist
Thanks a lot. With this type of filter how long between cleanings? Thanks
STILLDecibel Once a month or so
Everyday Aquarist
Thank you xo
I have a TON of junk in the bottom of my fluval 306. What do you recommend I do with all of it?
Ninja Octopus Throw it away maybe
Awesome video
Thank you!!!
Can you use the foam without the orange foam insert? I was given a pump but it's missing that part..
No
I would say clean the impeller with some at least moderately pressured water. (Tap water)
good man thanks :)
keep up the good work.
regards
Fishieable.
Have u had the experience of this filter leaking all the water in your tank ?
yorkshireboy123 Never, though I have heard of it. I think its caused by a faulty rubber seal between the two main parts . Try replacing it.
excellent,thank you.
Do you think the ball at the end of the intake tube will keep opae shrimp from getting sucked in?
+Kelly Peissner I doubt they will go near it
+Everyday Aquarist Ok thanks!
Maybe use the priming plunger to get air into the unit.
Everyday Aquarist
Thank you for the suggestion. I will try that in next cleaning as I am venturing out and am going to hook it up again. Hopefully with no leaks this time.
Is there another style of impeller? I bought a 306 second hand and the stick and propeller come out, but it leaves the magnet part of the impeller behind... I don't know if it's made like that or if it's seized up in there
mnelson10000 That's broken
Thanks for the reply, I figured it out eventually... I think it ran dry. :(
help!!!!!! my fluval 405 is not putting outflow it is very weak i ve taken it apart checked motor lines and tried to get all the air out what to do?
Only reasons flow would be bad are That the impeller is broken or not fitted properly, the filter is clogged or blocked, or you haven't put the grey flow lever down
Thank you!
No problem
Hi, i just want to check where is the o-ring of fluval 206? 'coz i think that's the reason why my filter is leaking i think i need to put lubricant in it. but i can't seems to find where it is. thank you.
ajdoms4 Yes there should be one in between filter top and base.
Everyday Aquarist is the o-ring different from the motor seal ring? 'coz i can't find where the that o-ring is. or maybe it is missing in my 206 coz i didn't bought it as brand new. thanks for the reply.
Around the edge of the top of the base/ lid there should be a large o ring which circles the entire unit.
