This was useful for my 407 as well. I was able to find that the small internal o-ring for the plunger shaft had broken. I should have lubricated the plunger shaft sooner. For now, I've just plugged the shaft and am running without a plunger. Thanks!
With what did you plug the shaft? I just found that I'm in the same predicament as you were with that internal small o ring being found broken into pieces
Tank you for this video a part from the Fluval AquaStop Valve for 07 Series Filter broke off in my 407 series watching this video helped remove the broken part
When replacing metal screws into plastic, turn the screw backwards with very slight pressure until it clicks or you feel a bump. This will align the existing threads and not create new ones which will eventually strip the hole.
Hello Brandon, I wanted to thank you for posting this very informative video. Individuals like I, who invest on these Fluval canisters spend the extra money for better performing filters. Maintenance is very important when it comes to protecting your investment and I think your video does an excellent explaining how to go about the proper maintenance of these Fluval canisters. I have a Fluval 106 canister myself, and I was experiencing trouble with the aquaststop valve. Every time I would try to lock into to place the whole valve would pop out. I decided to clean the entire canister out in hopes of solving this issue. Your video helped me clean out every component within the canister. As I was placing silicone oil on the gaskets, I noticed that the aquastop valve has two gaskets itself (one for the inlet and outlet valves). They were very hard/brittle and I honestly think this is the reason why the valve would not close appropriately. Perhaps you can make a note of it in your next video, for others who may be experiencing the same problem. Thanks again for posting such a detailed video, John Chamorro
+John Chamorro thank you for your comment. very happy the video helped! the aquastop valve can be your best friend or worst enemy very quickly. lol. probably soon i will do another rebuild video on them, as well as the g3. thanks again. B
Brandon's Turtles my nitrates have jumped high and stay at 80 do you think there is a lot of gunk accumulated in the white housing and I need to open and see? How much did you see when you first serviced the filter?
Hello Brandon, I have a fluval 406, it's very similar to the 306 I followed everything that you did in the video steps by step and connected the filter and it leaks like a sieve, worse than before. I'm at my wits end, any suggestions?
I was specifically looking for how to remove the inside cover and there you were. Thanks. My 405 is about 10yrs old and without some tough love, the top leaks like a sieve. The hard and dirty fix is to apply a liberal amount of grease onto the inside of the canister where the lid seal fits. There's a concave depression all the way around Not so much that it squeezes out but pretty close. Another little tip. If you also apply a thin coat of grease to the impeller shaft (the broken 'stick' in your vid), the pump goes from quiet to silent. I also hard plumbed my pump with rigid pipes to accommodate a radial flow filter. We inherited 5 turtles and they create a ton of waste that was plugging up my poor little pump in 3-4 days . Now, about once a month and no more smells. Thanks again
Another tip, the stick of the plunger for the priming system is the perfect size for popping those pins through the plastic clips. Not sure if it’s intentional but it’s handy 👍🏻
Thank the lord for this video. I actually just bought a fluval 305 off ebay. After trying to get it to pump the water out( it was only doing it when I pumped the primer) I finally took apart the impeller and discovered the ceramic dowel is broken. Thankfully I have a broken 205 sitting around that I pulled the dowel out of now if I can just get it back into the new one without breaking it...
Brandon - Thanks so much for the video. My pump was getting kind of week - turns out it was just loaded up with aquarium filth! But your video helped me rebuild my pump with the rebuild kit I got. It works great now. I tried to get it going with the filter empty but I had lost the siphon so I just filled the filter with water and it worked great. Thanks again. PS - the first rebuild kit I got from Amazon came with a broken impeller. Amazon did take it back and gave me my money back. The second one arrived fine.
+Stephen Mellis yay! I'm so happy to help. To be honest. It had been a while since I made this video and have had to watch it a few times myself to rebuild it again. Lol
You made me lol. I have had several of these for years. Great filters. The impeller covers are the most common problem I run into. All of mine use the clear one. One of the ears breaks and wont hold the cover secure. If you install it and leave it it is ok. But if you try to remove it, it is guaranteed to break. Occasionally have a leak. Have never greased the o ring though. Thank you for sharing the video
Very well done. Im dreading the gunk. Mine is not working just making a bunch of noise. How satisfying this will feel once mine is as clean as yours. Well here I go. Thanks for this one.
I miss Brandon, your videos are always so genuine and insightful. This was the first video I saw (to help me with fixing the head unit). Hope you are doing well!
Thanks!! The primer seal and primer cup on my 406 was bad... Had an old 306 where the seal and cup were still good. Changed out and 406 is up and running with my 407 now:) Great tutorial!!
All that work and the filter is just going to get dirty again as soon as it goes back on your tank. lol It was interesting to see how the motor heads are assembled on these filters though. I own two 305s which are very similar to the 306. Really good filters - especially if you get them at a reasonable price. Thanks for the instructive info...
Thank you!!! My 406 is making a lot of noise, after about 2 years so I am doing a bunch of research to get it repaired. Thanks for showing how to remove the white cover and the other spots I haven't been lubing, although I have been using Vaseline.
Great video, I just facing an issue with leak, not sure if it's the main gasket or the small one in the purge... will see, also great detail on how to dissasembre and assemle again, thanks a lot .
Exceptionally well done! 👍🏼 You helped me a lot and answered every question, an exception for one… Mine did not have the seal in the propeller shaft. Is there something I can do or should I order a new one? Thank you so much for doing such a great job on this video, boy what I wouldn’t do for other videos like this on other things!
Thank you so much for this it just me £155 the white plate on my 406 had worked loose not creating a perfect seal when closed. This resulted in about 70 ltrs of water on a bedroom floor not good lol. Thanks again
Nice cat. I think I saw it in a video about cleaning the filter sponges in the bathtub. I have the Fluval 306. Fluval's manual is very poor. In particular, it does not show where that long rubber gasket goes. I had to guess, and it was wrong and lots of water was sucked out of the aquarium. The gasket was damaged. Fortunately, I live near the U.K. Fluval distributor, and the nice lady there installed a new gasket for me without charge. The Fluval manual also does not tell you how to get the filter to prime after a cleanout. This can be impossible unless you watch the UA-cam video that deals with this. It is so easy, too. Also, the Fluval company sells several chemicals in bags (e.g. ammonia remover) to go inside the filter. These will guarantee that your aquarium will never "cycle"; you will have a permanent ammonia problem. That is very irresponsible of Fluval. An aquarium store employee straightened me out on that: only have sponges and "biomax" (porous ceramic pellets) inside the filter. Problem solved. No more ammonia. Thanks for the video. It will come in handy one day.
Oh look! My beloved 306 :D I had to order a new whole head some time ago because I think one of the windings (coils) burnt and the impeller didn't rotate anymore. I tried to disassemble the motor, but everything is in a resin bath, preventing any disassembling of the unit.
HELP ME BRANDON!! 🤣🤣 My ceramic plunger is broken too. I have to get the water out for the fish badly: can I run it long enough to pull the water out? I am also curious what to do when you have a pin in the hole that is next to the propeller bay. Not the little yellow one, but the one that is on the edge raised from there. I think somebody stuck some in there because two are missing. Thanks in advance- love the info you provide! ❤️
Thank you. The large rubber o-ring on the plunger came apart on mine, needed to take it apart to re-assemble. No other issues found though. :) They're very reliable pumps in my opinion. Had mine for I think 7 years?
Good insight, thanks for the info very useful and hope you get your parts, I have a 306 which is now becoming my back up so found this to be great video.
+J Dee The AquaStop fittings for the Fluval 04, 05 and 06 filters tend to warp over time, and become impossible to refit after a filter cleaning. You should keep a spare AquaStop around just in case this occurs, because eventually all AquaStop fittings will warp. You can purchase kits for these filters which include impeller assemblies, gaskets and other parts. They do tend to be on the expensive side though. The best thing to do if possible is to purchase an entire filter as a spare since you get all of the spare parts you need for much less than if you were to purchase these parts separately. I waited until the Fluval 305 was discontinued and then purchased a pair of them NOS. I paid about $110 each including shipping. And now I have an entire spare filter for a lot less than what I would have spent to purchase all of the parts to build a new 305. Just some food for thought the next time you find that you need to replace a part on your filter.
Greetings from Nairobi ,Kenya I have an old model Fluval 206 cannister filter - over 15 years old - have noticed the water output has dropped l do regular clean it. l have noticed you push & pierce the plastic holding clips with a small srew driver to remove the bottom section of the motor area.l note in my 206 there don't seems to b a hole on the plastic clip for the srew driver to enter - l think its sealed.
Hello there. I havent rebuilt a 206 but I think I have heard that the motor is totally sealed. hope you were able to get it cleaned and working again. My grandma loved Kenya. It was her favorite place on the planet. One day I would like to visit. Thank you!
Hey I found your video and it was well done. I picked up a used 306 filter and they said it was losing pressure. I followed what you did and I’m getting no suction at all. I placed just the head into some shallow water and it will shoot water up a foot or two with no tube on it. I think it is a really big air leak since they system won’t pump any water at all. Even if I prime really fast it still won’t go. I can’t feel any air and if filled the filter up and flipped it over and nothing really comes out. At least not at an appreciable rate where I’d lose all suction. Filled all the tubes and locked the bottoms and nothing. Any thoughts on what I should check next?
Brandon I got the wight more head cover off. I have 5 of the 6 pins. I cant get the pins back in the clips. Can you help! Update my hubby was able to push them up through the bottom of the clips. Then he was able to set them on the holes for the clips on the motor head cover and push them down into locking position.
Brandon, i have fluval 406. Thanks for the video. My 2nd Fluval 406 started leaking. If you have any suggestions to stop the leaking from the side, please let me know
hello there. my 306 use to bind the gasket when closng, especially if the accembily was dry. so i would wet it all or use kitchen safe greaase to rub the gasket down first then install. sealed it up nicely. dont use vasolene though, that will dry out the gaskey eventually and everything will shrink and crack. hope this helps :)
I lost one of the small plastic pins during cleaning. As best as I can tell you can't order replacements (or at least I didn't find any). I did find that you can make your own out of weed trimmer line that is the correct diameter. I think the pins are around 0.115 inches in diameter which is on the large side for trimmer line. I actually found that 0.105 line worked well for me and was a snug fit. Just trim a section to match length of a good pin.
Great video thank you very much🌹🌹, i have 106 filter it just stop pumping water out i cleaned every thing inside but i dont have grease. The motor is working but im not sure it something with the pressure and air or something else :/
Thanks for the video. Very informative . I was hoping you would cover how to replace the ceramic shaft. Do you need to disassemble to install it? Thanks! Carl
hi there. nope just pull it out of the rubber boot from the bottom. i had one break in half. needle nose pliers will work to pull the remaining part out. nice and easy
Brandon, My Fluval 405 consumes 27 W instead of 23 W. I am checking it with a power meter. I was thinking to clean the motor of according to your video it is sealed, and apparently I can not clean it at all. What can I do to solve the problem? Can could it be the origin of it? Any clue will be appreciated.
Brandon, just watched your video on the Fluval rebuild, very nice job. Out of unplanned necessity, I must ask if you have any knowledge on the aqua stops. My 405 started leaking when I disconnected it for a media change. A fine spray of water was coming out the right side, and also saw water seepage possibly from center or left side. Can't find any videos on these aqua stops to show repairs or replacement of parts. Do you have anything up your sleeve to shed some light on my dilemma? Thx.
Ya I have not seen anything on taking them apart. Im sure there are simple gaskets inside it but have no idea how to take it apart. A new one is probably the best bet
Solid video dude. Question for ya. I just got a tune up kit for my old 405 as one of the clips on my impeller cover broke, as well as the rubber tip on my shaft was missing. Kit came with a new gasket pre oiled, an impeller and cover, and the shaft. I noticed the shaft has the little rubber tip one one side. Am I correct by saying that the rubber side does down into the bottom of the slot where the impeller sits? As in, rubber side facing down when filter is setup? Also, it I have owned this filter for a few years now, and have maintained it well as far as cleaning it every 3-4 months. Would it be a good idea to disassemble the head like you did to clean it up? Is there any excess much that collects in the internals that would cause any harm or performance loss? Sorry for the novel lol. Thanks man and again, solid tear down and review.
thanks so much for the view and comment. im pretty sure the rubber boot goes into the motor side. the shaft of my 306 comes out with the rubber boot still in the hole. it'll sit down there to make sure the shaft doesnt rotate or wiggle. Ive rebuilt the head of both of my 306's about once a year. it gets pretty dirty but does not really inhibit the working function of the filter. i just purchased a g3 from fluval and its pretty much the same setup but i have no idea if i need to tear down to clean it once a year or not. seems pretty clean so far. lol. again thank you for the post, any other questions let me know! b
Thanks for the input, got the rebuild kit installed and a good thorough cleaning on the 405, she really woke up! Really pumping out the gallons now. I did notice that the old plug was indeed stuck into the hole where the shaft fits in. I just pry'd it out and put the knew one in for good measure.
I took the whole motorhead apart greased and reassembled it but the filter pours out on the sides when I put the red lever down. I can see that the seal is not tight enough. I'm not sure if I should add a second gasket or if there is something else I am missing. Great video by the way,
+Kathleen Bouchard just to confirm, the water comes out from under the motor housing and not the aquastop valve. Is the motor facing the right way on the canister? Ummm... Check the inside rim of the canister and see if there is any build up of waste. It needs to be completely smooth. We will figure this out
+Kathleen Bouchard oh. Also check to see if the gaskets on the inlets of the aquastop valve are there. Little red ones. Those are very important too! The water could be leaking G there and filling the motor housing. Mine did that once.
My 407 was sucking air around the base of the Aquastop valves. (I dripped some water ontop and watched it get sucked in). There looked like a place I could add an extra o-ring to both inlet and outlet, so I did. Suppose I could have just replaced the standard o-rings, but now it sits more snuggly too.
Hello Brandon. One important question? What after I performed the complete overhaul cleaning of my Fluval 306 canister filter and when I went to put back the grommets and the small pins; I happen to loose one. So, I have the other 5 in place. One in each corner and then chose one in the center to have one and the other I lost the small short pin that fits inside to expand the grommet into place. Where do I get some replacements? I went to the Fluval parts site and NO LUCK. Can you help me? Thank you so much for such a great video.
+Eduardo Martinez one of my flowers said he used a small piece of weed watcher line. It was the same diameter. As for official replacement parts, I have yet to see these for sale anywhere. I hope you have a weed wacker.... Lol :)
Hello....Thanks for the video...Did you get a new small seal ring that the primer rides through...The one that sits in the plastic housing...I can't find that seal for sale anywhere....next step for me is to try and match up a similar sized o-ring. Thanks
hello. sorry for the delayed response. (Pokemon go has taken over my life). No i was able to keep using the old seal inside the primer housing. if this gets lost it might be a tough one to find, i did a quick search to see if you can buy just that but havent seen it alone yet. i think the ring comes with the primer kit for the 06 series fluval though. hope you can get something working!!!
Wow amazing. My canister’s been working fine for over 21 years, I received several shocks recently when my hand was in the tank with it running, after unplugging it & trying several outlets, extension cords etc, the water is testing for current & voltage only when the fluval is running. If I take it apart as you’ve shown, can that be fixed? Thanks either way, great video!
Sounds like there is a crack in the motor housing. I dont believe that can be repaired. With anything electrical, I would call that pump dead and replace it. You dont want to risk a full 120v load into the tank or even yourself
Nice clear video! On my 406 the impeller is no longer working after a cleaning. I can hear that power gets to it but it won’t spin. Any experience with that type of problem? It’s an all in one shaft and magnet and the impeller goes on fine.
that is strange. is the magnet touching the sides at all? is your shaft in one piece? is the air tube that is beside this clear? is the impeller firmly attached to the magnet?
HI, water coming out of filter is very slow and low pressure, is that a propeller issue or what do you think? thank you I just dont want to spend another $170 for it :)
+Spanish IN Atlanta Hello there. Low pressure could mean a broken shaft, not fully priming, or air in the system that can't be sent out. If you pull out the impeller, there is a small tube to one side. It sends built up air out back to the tank keeping only water in the filter. Check if that small tube is clear.
thank you for your reply! I actually got it to work!! LOL I just cleaned the hoses out completely and then filled both of them with water, somehow that helped to jump start the filter and it is pumping water like its nobodys business! :D I hope this lasts!
On the 305 - How do you take the primer plunger apart? After the 5 screws, Hammering the pins seems scary. I have not done it. Is it a different pin than the 306? p.s siliconing the primer boot made BIG difference in start up. Thanks of the video
+Bill Wallace should be very close to the same. The canister size may be the only difference but I don't have a 305.not too sure. Those plastic pins are designed to be pushed out. Go slow and if you're not sure, or comfortable doing it then don't. I don't want something to break because of my video. I'm glad the silicone helps!
Is it smarter to use the new gasket without any grease or add petroleum for a temporary fix? And how often do these gaskets usually need to be replaced? (The main one that surround the housing.
Hello. The main gasket should be replaced every year or so. Don't use petroleum jelly on it because it will swell then shrink and cause leaks. Silicone grease wont cause swelling. Much better. I'd recommend greasing even when new. Helps close the canister without binding up :)
Thank you so much for this video. It is excellent. I was primeing my pump 306 after a clean and the little white plunger button seemed to snap off I don't know if it broke or just came of, the little shaft that attaches the button to the plunger is pushed down inside the primer unit. Is it possible that it just came off or could it be broken. Can I order a new prmer assembly and if so where. Thnks so much.
+leona oja the knob disconnects from the top of the shaft. hopefully the shaft is not broken, however they do sell them on ebay and amazon and many online places. search primer fluval 306. maybe even some local fish supplies stores may carry it too. good luck
look at the knob. does it have a black piece inside it or not. heres a link to what the plunger looks like outside of the filter . www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwi3poiHyZvLAhUE5GMKHTUOBFwQjRwIBw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.aquatic-spare-parts.co.uk%2Fproddetail%2Ffluval-306-external-filter-prime-assembly-a20021&psig=AFQjCNH1g_WMdZjMafldE1XDN9uQMUXoxw&ust=1456787104371740
Thanks so much when the knob kind of fliped off when I was priming I pushed the black plunger part right in the white top pump knob piece looks normal. May be I broke the tip of the plunger that attaches to the pumper knob off. I guess I would have to take it apart to see if I could push the black part back up to reattach the plunger knob. So very nice of you to reply.
no problem, with the motor cover off, its easy to press the primer plunger back upward into the head to see the shaft. WATCH OUT for pushing the plunger back through the top, there is a tiny gasket that sits in there from the top. do not lose it! lol
I bought a used 406 filter online, it looks great, very clean and has all parts apparently in good shape, but it leaks on the intake valve and around the top as well, I checked the o rings everywhere and they look fine, any suggestions?
what do you think is wrong with my 306 filter? i can hear the propeller moving, and when I prime it manually, water comes out the output, but for some reason it doesn't work
Hello. Sorry it took so long to respond. Make sure the checkball is working correctly in the intake side. Also check the impeller cover to make sure it is seated correctly. Good luck
hello there. the top seal under the clips may be torn, or very dry. i sometimes will have to use a kitchen safe type grease to coat the gasket before reassembly. if it is dry it can bind the gasket up while it is closing. first maybe just try getting the gaket wet with water when closing then see if it seals better. hope that helps!
UMMM Brandon..your title says motor REBUILD...like you did not take out the motor..I am wondering is it possible to replace the motor itself? if so where can you get them? thanks
Hello. the impelar and shaft are part of the motor. the coil is placed inside of the plastic and sealed with epoxy and cannot be removed. it is a coil onnly and does not have any moving parts inside and very rarely are the parts that go wrong
I have a 306 fluval, my impeller suddenly no longer spins. This is because the housing magnet just became too strong, where I cant pull it out with my hand. I have open it up but there is nothing I can really do or is there? Any advice will help thank you
sounds like the impellar has debris in the housing that wedged the impeller. or the shaft broke in the middle and it pulled to one side if the housing and wont rotate. try to pull the impeller free, clear the area of debris and make sure the ceramic shaft is intact. i have had to replace the shaft a few times. good luck!
@@BrandonsTurtles thanks for the quick reply, but there is no debris, I have cleaned it really well and the impeller when i insert in deeper, it just gets stuck or magnetized to the inner wall. I have to use a wrench to pull it out. it really strong stuck. I am open to get a replacement, but my 306 is older than old, and wondering if I do, doe the newer versios works? open to any other options
sorry for the delay in reply. Yes the other fluval products do great. I have a G3, which is super clever and smart, and also easier to clean,,,, but doesn't clean the same. I love the 306 series because I can add lots of polishing pads to make the water incredibly clear. I did have to replace one of my 306's a long time ago and found a super good deal on ebay. Maybe even look for just the motor head if the canister is still in good condition. good luck!
Hey would love to ask you a question . my sister was left in care of 2 6ft tanks and this was a filter that was on for addition. but it was left to run dry and stay plugged in for a while . looks like the motor is completely fried . how do I get a replacement and is it worth it or not . we are trying to sell one of the 6 ft tanks and accompanying fish tank jets and filters . to make money to re do a tank for reptiles
hi there. the fluval 306 motor assembly is a stand alone water proof unit. more than likely, the impeller shaft and or the impeller itself is damaged. i would start with a new shaft and impeller to check if the filter is worth keeping. a replacement motor assembly is around a hundred dollars. but for that price it might be worth getting a whole new pump. easiest thing to do is check the ceramic shaft to see if it is broken or not. hope this helps!!! B
So you know that little gasket piece that you said to not loose? My boyfriend took ours apart and lost it... Do you know where I can get a replacement? :l
Hello there. I use to have a store that would carry all these parts here in town. But as this filter gets older it is harder to find parts for sure. Now I mostly get my old filter parts form ebay or amazon. Hope you can get it soon!
iv got the 206 model of this ans its poring water out of both the lips, iv put 2 brand new seals on greased up well and still pouring out the same... i bought it 2nd hand, any ideas? thanks
the water might be coming from the primer assembly into the motor case then out the sides, you may need to check the primer and make sure the small rubber gasket is on the primer stem
Hey Brandon,Do you know any store that would sell a specific part of a motor head. I need a plate where the impeller sits cause the notch that holds it in place is worn out.
I haven't found too many spare parts at local stores, you can check smaller "mom and pop" shops, they sometimes have specific accessories. for the most part I order through ebay or amazon if available.
The ceramic shaft broke in our fluval 306. I just got a replacement, however, the black end of the broken shaft is stuck in the bottom of the motor housing. Any solution to getting it out?
hmmm. maybe get the housing dry and dab some superglue to the end of a pen/pencil/stick. something and make sure the glue doesnt get into the crack, just on the shaft. then hopefully you can pull it out. i cant remember if there is a rubber nub inside the housing to hold the shaft. if so you might be able to push into it with needle nosed pliers and pull the rubber and the shaft out. good luck!!! hope you can find some solution!
Thank you. Did not realize you had answered. Did get it out. Got the replacement and now can't get the unit to work at all. I'm on with the Fluval people. Might be the primer is not working. I don't know. Frustrated for sure.
I rebuilt the whole filter and my pump wont spin now if I take the red cover off of the pump it will spin but when I put it back on it wont spin and It looks like the ceramic shaft is sticking out a little bit on the cover im not sure what it is can you help me out?
Hello. Sorry for the delay. I have had the ceramic shaft break, that makes the impeller unable to move. Check the shaft by pulling it straight out. There is a rubber base that it seats into in the motor. If the shaft is good, check the red flap cover. Sometimes it is latched but not all the way seated down. Hope those help!
Hi, I followed all the steps and my white latches are loose now. It creates the seal but theyre so lose they open with their own weight. I've gone back and looked and no palstic is broken, screws are tight. Any ideas? +Brandon's Turtles
hmmm. loose as in not snapping in the up locked position? or looser when closing the assembly. with a freshly greased gasket it will feel much easier to go together. is it leaking at all? hopefully not. sorry i didnt see your comment sooner
hello!. check the gaskets on the housing first. when closing the pump, if this gasket is dry it can get twisted and leak. use a small amount of kitchen safe grease on the gasket. also check the two gaskets on the hose connector. good luck
Google says that is basically petroleum jelly. I don't think you should use that. Silicon grease is the right thing and it is easy to find at a home supply store in the plumbing section.
Excellent video 😁
This was useful for my 407 as well. I was able to find that the small internal o-ring for the plunger shaft
had broken.
Hello Brandon,
I wanted to thank you for posting this very informative
video. Individuals like I, who invest on these Fluval canisters spend the extra
money for better performing filters. Maintenance is very important when it
comes to protecting your investment and I think your video does an excellent
explaining how to go about the proper maintenance of these Fluval canisters.
I have a Fluval 106 canister myself, and I was experiencing
trouble with the aquaststop valve. Every time I would try to lock into to place
the whole valve would pop out. I decided to clean the entire canister out in
hopes of solving this issue. Your video helped me clean out every component
within the canister. As I was placing silicone oil on the gaskets, I noticed
that the aquastop valve has two gaskets itself (one for the inlet and outlet
valves). They were very hard/brittle and I honestly think this is the reason
why the valve would not close appropriately. Perhaps you can make a note of it
in your next video, for others who may be experiencing the same problem.
Thanks again for posting such a detailed video,
John Chamorro
+John Chamorro thank you for your comment. very happy the video helped! the aquastop valve can be your best friend or worst enemy very quickly. lol. probably soon i will do another rebuild video on them, as well as the g3. thanks again. B
Nice reference video, good tip on the silicone grease vs. vaseline.
Troublant thank you for the view!!!
I had to watch my own video to remember how to rebuild this filter. lolol
Do you think it's important to do all of this, or just take the impeller out and clean some of that?
Brandon's Turtles my nitrates have jumped high and stay at 80 do you think there is a lot of gunk accumulated in the white housing and I need to open and see? How much did you see when you first serviced the filter?
Thank you great video
Push down on the gray clips you unsnapped. The pump lifts right off. No need to fight it by pulling on it and it doesn’t stress the o-ring. HTH
+Tom Maguire You are very welcome! glad the video could help. and thank you for the tips on the fluvals. i will use those definitely.
I am waiting on the replacement parts but I am so thankful for this video. I know I should be able to take the broken pieces apart and fix them now!
Perfect thank you, I got one of these secondhand and this is the perfect guide for how to completely service it before use.
I'm so glad it helped! Thank you
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Very informative stuff, without the sarcasm from forums lol.
you are very welcome!
+brookey yay, should pop straight out, ya i got a 306 of ebay with a broken shaft too. good luck!
Lol
you are a hero , i was about to take the hold head apart to remove the propeller, after seeing your vid it save me big truble ,thank you
You made me lol.
Thank you so very much! Hope you are doing well also. I am great. Quite a few life changes but all have been good. Hugs
@@BrandonsTurtles I'm glad you are doing great, as I'm sure all your fans are! Be great to see an update from you (pressure......!)
Thanks had to change out a frayed cord you helped a lot with this video
Thanks for the tip on removing the white shroud. Perfect
Thanks!! The primer seal and primer cup on my 406 was bad... Had an old 306 where the seal and cup were still good. Changed out and 406 is up and running with my 407 now:)
Great tutorial!!
You are welcome. Thank you for stopping by!
Excellent thanks for sharing 👍
Thank you!!! My 406 is making a lot of noise, after about 2 years so I am doing a bunch of research to get it repaired. Thanks for showing how to remove the white cover and the other spots I haven't been lubing, although I have been using Vaseline.
+glen weirbach you are very welcome!!! thank you for the view and comment!!!
very nicely explained laced with humour
Thanks!! Good job. I will refer to this when I rebuild mine.
Great video, I just facing an issue with leak, not sure if it's the main gasket or the small one in the purge... will see, also great detail on how to dissasembre and assemle again, thanks a lot .
You are welcome. Hope you find the source of the leak and get it repaired easily. Good Luck :)
I have the 406 and there is a gap between the motor and the canister, any advice?
HELP ME BRANDON!! 🤣🤣
My ceramic plunger is broken too.
They're very reliable pumps in my opinion. Had mine for I think 7 years?
+turgsh01 yay. Sorry took a while to respond. That is great. Ya I really like the Fluval filters too.
AWESOME VIDEO!!
Fabulous instructions, mine works perfectly now, thank you. 😎👍
Thank you Thank you thank you, I can't wait to clean my pump now !!!!
Good insight, thanks for the info very useful and hope you get your parts, I have a 306 which is now becoming my back up so found this to be great video.
Fantastic job.
This is fantastic! Thanks so much. Now, to go buy gasket kits for my Fluval, Marineland, and Filstar filters.
+J Dee
The AquaStop fittings for the Fluval 04, 05 and 06 filters tend to warp over time, and become impossible to refit after a filter cleaning.
Thank you SO much for this video. We're going to try this and hopefully it works!
It worked, hooray!!! Thanks again!
+mxymm you are very welcome!
Greetings from Nairobi ,Kenya
I have an old model Fluval 206 cannister filter - over 15 years old - have noticed the water output has dropped l do regular clean it. l have noticed you push & pierce the plastic holding clips with a small srew driver to remove the bottom section of the motor
area.l note in my 206 there don't seems to b a hole on the plastic clip for the srew driver to enter - l think its sealed.
Thanks for the great video. A ice cube tray works great for keeping small parts together
that's brilliant
Brilliant instructional video Brandon thank you
I love Ebay. Never had a problem. However, I make sure I select "NEW" sealed in the box. Not USED
Brandon, i have fluval 406.
Very informative! Thank you!!!
Wow, great instructional video!
thank you very much for your help it was very interesting
I lost one of the small plastic pins during cleaning. As best as I can tell you can't order replacements (or at least I didn't find any). I did find that you can make your own out of weed trimmer line that is the correct diameter. I think the pins are around 0.115 inches in diameter which is on the large side for trimmer line. I actually found that 0.105 line worked well for me and was a snug fit. Just trim a section to match length of a good pin.
thats awesome!
Can the electromagnet part be defective? If it is can it be replaced?
Great video thank you very much🌹🌹, i have 106 filter it just stop pumping water out i cleaned every thing inside but i dont have grease. The motor is working but im not sure it something with the pressure and air or something else :/
Clean your checkball. Many times it is dirty and wont allow priming
@@BrandonsTurtles i bought a new one :/
Thanks for the video. Very informative . I was hoping you would cover how to replace the ceramic shaft. Do you need to disassemble to install it? Thanks! Carl
hi there. nope just pull it out of the rubber boot from the bottom. i had one break in half. needle nose pliers will work to pull the remaining part out. nice and easy
Thanks Brandon for the quick reply. God bless!
thanks for making this vid! you are braver than I good Sir!
Brandon,
My Fluval 405 consumes 27 W instead of 23 W.
Thx.
+J Dee I would suggest buying a new Aqua-stop to be on the safe side.
Ryan Lee awesome! glad to hear it!!!
Awesome! I did it!! Thanks very much
Thank you for an awesome vide, very educational.
I bougt a 406 fluval filter and it leaks on the sides and on the intake area, any sugestions?
My 407 was sucking air around the base of the Aquastop valves. (I dripped some water ontop and watched it get sucked in). There looked like a place I could add an extra o-ring to both inlet and outlet, so I did. Suppose I could have just replaced the standard o-rings, but now it sits more snuggly too.
My motor stopped all together idk if I need to just replace the system or if it’s fixable
Lol :)
Best video on UA-cam goes to 👏
thank you so much!!!
I just ended up plugging mine and ditching the plunger altogether.
The pins work differently in my 407. I suppose they changed the design. I cant get them out.
What are the black plastic nubs called. In there a proper name for them
HI, water coming out of filter is very slow and low pressure, is that a propeller issue or what do you think? thank you I just dont want to spend another $170 for it :)
Awesome video, thank you!!
Thanks very much man, very good video.
Hi
I have the same e canister filter but it has suddenly stopped working and gets from the top whenever I put it on but doesn't start
Thanks very informative video
+Ashwin Mistry you're welcome!
I have a fluval 305 I'm having a hard time finding parts for it . like tune up kit and media .
local stores no longer carry the 305 parts. I have been lucky in purchasing these items from ebay or amazon mainly.
+leona oja the knob disconnects from the top of the shaft. hopefully the shaft is not broken, however they do sell them on ebay and amazon and many online places. search primer fluval 306. maybe even some local fish supplies stores may carry it too. good luck
thanks so much. How would I know if it's broken
look at the knob. does it have a black piece inside it or not. heres a link to what the plunger looks like outside of the filter . www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwi3poiHyZvLAhUE5GMKHTUOBFwQjRwIBw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.aquatic-spare-parts.co.uk%2Fproddetail%2Ffluval-306-external-filter-prime-assembly-a20021&psig=AFQjCNH1g_WMdZjMafldE1XDN9uQMUXoxw&ust=1456787104371740
WATCH OUT for pushing the plunger back through the top, there is a tiny gasket that sits in there from the top. do not lose it! lol
I bought a used 406 filter online, it looks great, very clean and has all parts apparently in good shape, but it leaks on the intake valve and around the top as well, I checked the o rings everywhere and they look fine, any suggestions?
sorry for the delay. try using kitchen safe / fish tank grease on the gaskets, they could be binding up when being seated
You saved my life!
what do you think is wrong with my 306 filter? i can hear the propeller moving, and when I prime it manually, water comes out the output, but for some reason it doesn't work
Hello. Sorry it took so long to respond. Make sure the checkball is working correctly in the intake side. Also check the impeller cover to make sure it is seated correctly. Good luck
I just got a 406 second hand and everything is working good but i can’t get it stop leaking from the clips!
hello there. the top seal under the clips may be torn, or very dry. i sometimes will have to use a kitchen safe type grease to coat the gasket before reassembly. if it is dry it can bind the gasket up while it is closing. first maybe just try getting the gaket wet with water when closing then see if it seals better. hope that helps!
Maybe even look for just the motor head if the canister is still in good condition. good luck!
You just saved me, thank you
I have the 406 and there is a gap between the motor and the canister, any advice?
Terribly sorry for the delay. Been away for a bit. Hope you were able to mend this problem
Do you know where I can get that ceramic dowel? Mine broke as well and I'm not having any luck.
+Clay Merritt they have tune up kits for these filters and I am pretty sure the shaft is included. I had luck on eBay a while ago
+Brandon's Turtles I actually just found it on petoverstock. Thanks man
Hey would love to ask you a question . my sister was left in care of 2 6ft tanks and this was a filter that was on for addition. but it was left to run dry and stay plugged in for a while . looks like the motor is completely fried . how do I get a replacement and is it worth it or not . we are trying to sell one of the 6 ft tanks and accompanying fish tank jets and filters . to make money to re do a tank for reptiles
hi there. the fluval 306 motor assembly is a stand alone water proof unit. more than likely, the impeller shaft and or the impeller itself is damaged. i would start with a new shaft and impeller to check if the filter is worth keeping. a replacement motor assembly is around a hundred dollars. but for that price it might be worth getting a whole new pump. easiest thing to do is check the ceramic shaft to see if it is broken or not. hope this helps!!!
Thanks for the info.
What are those plugs at 7:37 I need to get some new ones! Also any idea where I can get them online.
Thanks man
They are hard to find. But someone found that weed whacker line is the same diameter.
Brandon's Turtles I ended up using chop stick tips. Stuck them in measured and cut. Bam
Hmmm. Let me know what's happening. I have a few people wondering about priming problems. I may do a full priming video just for the Fluval 306
Is silicone grease or oil safe for the fish?
research the brand and make sure it is pet or tank safe. i use 'kitchen safe' grease so far with no problems. hope that helps
My 406 will prime but not run after the bubbles are out. Any recommendations?
check the impeller and shaft. also check the check-ball for the intake. it can cause problems if clogged
I'm stuck on the part when you remove the primer handle. It doesn't look the same as my 407 and I'm scared of breaking it
Sorry for the delay. Hope you found a solution for your primer. I have not had the chance to tinker with a 407.
Sir hy
I am from india I bought fluval 307 its but after installation when prime the filter its start liking can suggest any solution
hello!. check the gaskets on the housing first. when closing the pump, if this gasket is dry it can get twisted and leak. use a small amount of kitchen safe grease on the gasket. also check the two gaskets on the hose connector. good luck
can i use "pawpaw ointment? as a coating on the rubber seal?
hello. I am unfamiliar with pawpaw ointment. I have no idea if it will be ok or not
Google says that is basically petroleum jelly. I don't think you should use that. Silicon grease is the right thing and it is easy to find at a home supply store in the plumbing section.
