Brian, after watching your QN90D vs. U8N comparison, I'm really looking forward to your QN85D vs. U8N comparison you mentioned is coming. I went through a couple of mini-LEDs myself before landing on the QN85D-one of them being the U8N, and the other the QM851. While the U8N was overall impressive, I couldn’t deal with its inconsistent black levels. The letterbox bars would shift from inky black to light gray depending on what was on the screen, and in low-light scenes, the entire screen-including the letterbox bars-would brighten to try and preserve shadow detail. This made it unwatchable for me in a dark room. The TCL was also solid, but the motion handling and color production didn’t quite meet my standards. As a last resort, I tried the Samsung, with low expectations due to its relatively fewer dimming zones compared to the TCL and Hisense. However, I’ve always been impressed with my older Samsung Q8FN, which had just 40 dimming zones but delivered consistently deep black levels with no fluctuation in letterbox bars. Colors on that older Samsung model were also exceptional, so I decided to give the QN85D a shot. Turns out, the QN85D outperformed both the U8N and the TCL in black level consistency and overall image quality. The letterbox bars stay inky black, no matter what’s on screen, and the color production is a big step up from the TCL and Hisense. It’s honestly the best-looking mini-LED I’ve seen-not the brightest, but the overall picture quality is outstanding. It even beats out the QN90D in a lot of key areas such as color gamut coverage, vastly better native contrast ratio, EOTF tracking, HDR native gradient and uniformity. After some digging, I discovered that Samsung took a unique, almost “old-school” approach with the QN85D, making it virtually the only TV they’ve released since 2018 to use this design philosophy. Unlike their recent models that rely heavily on high local dimming zones to make up for low native contrast, the QN85D features a high native contrast panel with a modest number of dimming zones. This provides a rock-solid baseline black level without depending entirely on local dimming algorithms, which can often be flawed. With fewer dimming zones, it also puts less load on the processor, allowing for a much better algorithm than what Samsung typically uses. The result is one of the most refined pictures I’ve seen on a mini-LED, and it’s surprising this TV isn’t getting more attention. I think it’s one of the best mini-LEDs on the market, and I’m excited to see your comparison video- it'll smoke the U8N! When will this video drop?
@HARIHARAN-t9l The QN85D is a great TV, but it runs a bit cool, and the gamma is too low out of the box. Here’s what to do: Go to Movie Mode preset. Adjust white balance: Green High: -3 Green Low: -3 Blue High: -10 Blue Low: -10 Set Gamma to -2. Set Shadow Detail to -1. For Local Dimming: Set to Standard for SDR. Set to High for HDR. These changes will greatly improve color production and add depth to the image. To see how much of a difference it makes, compare your adjusted Movie mode settings with Filmmaker mode. Out of the box, they’re identical when set the same, so the improvements will be clear. Let me know what you think! This is actually a better TV than the QN90 when it comes to raw picture quality, providing you correct some of the out-of-box inadequacies. The QN85D has a much higher native contrast ratio than the QN90D, a factor often overlooked by reviewers but critical for color production and overall black level performance. The QN90D, by contrast, relies heavily on local dimming to achieve black level consistency and decent color production because of its low native contrast ratio panel. Regardless of the TV, local dimming algorithms always have flaws and limitations.
@@garynorwood1649 Checkout the reflections before buying..you need to have an almost dark room to not see your face on the screen in dark scenes with the bravia 7. Otherwise an excellentttt tv.
I usually like Sony TV's because of processing and upscaling, but Samsung off angle viewing is much better, and filmmaker mode looked really good. Braving 7 75" right now at Bestbuy in Canada is $400 cheaper than the QN90D.
If you lower The BLACK Bars from 0 which is in the middle, to - 10 or more and up the GAMMA a Lot on the Bravia 7 you get rid of the Blooming all together... Brightness at 30 to 50 Local Dimming to your Liking And be in Professional Mode This works for SDR and HDR on all Inputs Save to all INPUTS and OUTPUTS
Lowering the brightness in HDR would ruin the image because u need brightness maxed for the HDR to function properly but I will try the other things u mentioned when my TV get here thursday

Actually, it just occurred to me Brian, you should also do a QN85D vs QN90D comparison video. I bet the QN85D will surprise you by having the better picture quality overall. As mentioned, it beats out the QN90D In some of the most fundamentally important aspects of picture quality; Color gamut coverage and native contrast ratio- which in my opinion is so important when it comes to color production and overall black level performance. It would be really interesting to see.
Funny thing is I’ve got the b 9 in 85 inch and it’s amazing but I’ve been drifting back to the Samsung 900c 8k that’s living in the better half’s snug and cramming in the odd 4K movie in why she out I’m kinda wondering if the 900d that was my first choice until I see the b9 was the correct one,, 😊😊 ever way they are both amazing and set up to my eyes liking but I can feel a 8k 900d arriving before Xmas ,,,😂😂😂😂😂
Hey Brian! I always love watching your content, especially with the ambient music and the tone of your voice 😅 I’m wondering when you’re going to drop a video comparing Bravia 9 and QN900D?
Samsung has better local dimming, better viewing angles, better coating, and even more Oled like depth. Sony wins in only 1 category as always processing
Yeah Sony's processor is unmatched. There are so many times I see clipping and loss of detail on the samsung. Samsung has more contrast and is more saturated but Sony makes sure to showcase every detail while maintaining natural colors. Not to mention Sonys upscaling is bar none
You should've done this review without using brand names. Instead use which do you prefer? A or B ? Then in a following video, tell the viewers which is which

Okay, so the Samsung looks punchy and good at first, but then you see how it blows out the whites. Also, the Samsung image sometimes takes on a "fake" or cartoonish quality to it. And the Sony has superior depth or sense of a 3D image. Wow, look at the white fringing on the top of the grasshopper, which is blown out on the Samsung but controlled on the Sony.
I love Sony, but QN90D looks better to me. I don’t know which suppose to be better as I didn’t do research and looked up the numbers, but as I said, I prefer Samsung here.

Hi Bryan, can I ask you a favor? can you make a video comparing the sony bravia 7, panasonic w95a, hisense u8n and samsung s90d? I'm very undecided between these TVs, I would buy Hisense just for the lowest price but I would like to know from you which of these is the best, both for movies and gaming? If you can make a video comparison between the four TVs I would really appreciate it. keep it up, you're really good.

The 85in would hang off the entertainment center about 6 inches on both sides because it's meant for a 70in
On the sky views in standard the Samsung washed out blue sky patches and appeared saturated. But is that view, me looking through my Sony X950H 65? I would prefer objective plus subjective comparison (including the Sony reference monitor). What’s going to happen when 4000 nit content is closer to standard and the comparison will be Dolby Vision vs HDR?
Qn90d without a doubt has much better contrast.this means even if it's less accurate on the presets it has much more headroom.im surprised because fomo said that the b7 meet or beat the Bravia 9 on some scenes.
Very interesting in the fact they both trade wins depending on the mode. The Samsung has richer color more OLED like color, and a bit sharper probably because of the local dimming even though the Bravia 7 may be more color accurate . I can’t get over that panel on the 7 and it’s poor reflection. The Bravia 7 could’ve done been so much better with better panel Thanks for the video Brian.
I do think the decison depends on how you will use it. For me the better Detail out weighs the better contrast. I will not be using it in game mode as it will just be a bedroom TV and movies and general TV are what interest me. If it was the living room TV, I think I might go with the samsung. I did enjoy the comparison and the only thing missing is having 3-4 top level TV's all compared. I am also looking at the Hisense U88N series and the LG OLED TV's. Thanks

@BRIANSTECHTHERAPY True, it is very hard to capture it on a camera. You either have to move camera on a still image on TV, or Plain motion video on screen like hockey test. I think moving camera on grey static image or Grey color captures it better. Thank you Sir for your Comment. ❤ And thank you so much for the video, both TVs are alternative to each other and so to decide this Comparison video is very important. I really appreciate your effort you put in making these videos.👍
There are some minor differences (I might ever so slightly lean to the Sony). BTW I'm not a gamer. However, am I crazy to think you will get used to whichever TV lands in your house? Thus, maybe if the comparison is this close, it's not worth the over analysis and simply stay true to one brand so cruising apps and the remote stays consistent throughout the house as most probably have other TVs in other rooms? BTW Great review
So...did Samsung finally fix it's Tizen OS? I have the S95B and for a long time, all I ever saw was how much people complained about how laggy it was...and mine is too but I deal with it. I guess Samsung finally wised up....I prefer Google TV but couldn't pass up on how beautiful the QDOled was so I got the S95B last year...
Thanks for this Brian. I am normally a Sony guy but I went with the Samsung QN90D on a Black Friday Sale. The Local dimming performance is just too impressive and I'm a PC Gamer as well so the 144hz and 1440p support was just too attractive as well.
@@thomasthetankengin7722 Honest opinion? Not a fan so far. Mind you I use it as a computer monitor but the motion handling is pretty bad compared to Sony's despite this having one of Samsungs best processors. With motion interpolation in movies, it has some weird artifacting in most scenes, and even in gaming with motion interpolation turned off it just doesnt handle motion as smoothly with 60fps gaming, Sony is miles ahead in this area. Also when I got home today and turned it on it wouldnt display my PC, Had to shut down my computer and when it started working again there was some weird artifacting on the screen. Also it has some weird thing where when you plug a device in the TV decides what kind of device it is and you're stuck with certain settings based on what device the TV decides it is. SO every time you unplug something and plug it back in you have to reconfigure it from scratch. You can't turn this off either. Also you can notice the TV adjusting the brightness from one scene to another. Took me an hour to find the right settings to get rid of that. I wouldn't recommend it, Sony is just all around better. On the upside it's extremely bright, colorful, and blacks are fantastic lol.
@@thomasthetankengin7722 I bought the QN90D, then returned it for the Sony Bravia 7. There is some things he isn't showing in this video. The motion capability both in Gaming and Movies is FAR superior on the Sony B7. Not even a competition. The Samsung also has some strange backlight control where the backlight will shift brightness constantly, and even flicker a bit in gaming when you push the brightness too high. The Sony does not have these issues. Also turns out the Bravia 7 does support 1440p on PC so I'm happy. I will say though the QN90D did have slightly better blacks and local dimming due to the more dimming zones. But the Sony is still amazing in this area too.
@@Nitro192192I’m debating returning my 55” QN95D for the B7. I’m finding the blooming during games distracting. For example in the new Indiana Jones game, the white HUD in the bottom left creates a strange blue colour bloom around it during dark scenes. I’m worried the B7 will be worse though as it has less dimming zones by far, as I believe the QN95D has even more zones than the QN90D. Have you noticed this on the B7?
@@psy007 Yea and no. I found the extra dimming zones on the QN90D gave it SLIGHTLY better blacks than the Bravia 7, but oddly enough the B7 blooms less because Sony's Local damming algorithm is more advanced. Instead of blooming the bravia 7 raises the blacks a bit, which is much less distracting than blooming. The main reason I switched to the B7 is because the processor is better. Motion in gaming and movies is much more fluid and natural, upscaling is better and the overall picture quality is more natural. Samsung was a bit too contrasty and also it had some texture flickering in gaming when you push brightness to the max. If you want to get rid of blooming, go OLED. I can't do OLED because I use my TV as a computer monitor so I'll get burn in. Hope this helps.
Both perform equally as good, just all depends on which size you want and which operating system you want to deal with. The Samsung comes in a 98 inch size so if you want that get the qn90D
Hey Brian thanks for the comparison. Maybe do you have ps5 HDR Settings from the z95a? Should i calibrate With the clipping Option or With the normal/dynamic Option? Thx so much

Great video review. Being a big Sony fan I would take the Sony all day long. I am not a gamer . Into movies and sports. I actually bought a Sony XR 48 90 K a tad over two years ago. Love their XR processor!
Brian, which one would you recommend if I primarily watch sports (hockey, football). Somewhat bright room but I can control the lighting with curtains. No gaming. Thanks!
To me there is a visual difference between the two. The Sony is better. Detail is more evident as the whites are crushing the picture on the Samsung - case in point look at the clouds on both at 14:51. It’s not always about which TV is brightest. Both TVs are bright. Shadow detail to me trumps the brightness of a TV. Picture processing goes to the Sony neck and neck with my Panny.
The Samsung QN90D was my choice between the two in June. I could compare them side by side at a retailer store. The semi gloss coating of the Sony made almost impossible to appreciate details or colours, it looked a mess. In the dark they looked more similar, but movie and filmmaker modes looked much better in the Samsung to me. Motion clarity and screen uniformity as well. I would make the same choice today.
@@tomgroth2898 If you research brand preference, it is easy, Sony wins. Samsung outsells them, but look at forums, Samsung is plagued with issues. Even different panels used in the QN90D is a roll of the dice. So they report.
The Bravia seven is a good TV but with that said, I think the Sony X90L looks better. They are side-by-side in my Best Buy’s. I think Sony dropped the ball with the Bravia 7 a little bit not that it’s a bad TV. Its just that last years TV starting at X90L and above look better. As for comparing these two TVs to Bravia seven is the better looking TV in my opinion. Also as somebody that can see the Statue of Liberty fairly often, I could tell you that the Sony TV definitely has the color correct, even though it’s CGI in this video. Its does look closer to what the color looks like in real life. Details in the blues and green definitely superior on Sony. Sony Bravia seven definitely Wins this
@ Well if that’s true, then just out of the box the Sony X90L still looks better. It would be safe to assume that if they were both updated, the results would be the same. I’m sure on that Bravia 7 sounds more impressive on paper but I respectfully disagree with what you said. From my own personal experience of seeing them side-by-side the older X90L is the better TV.
I actually did a comparison between x90l and Bravia 7 few months ago. For me, the Bravia 7 just looks a touch more bright, vibrant and contasty, so I bought the Bravia 7 and has been enjoying it since. 🙏
@@michaeldietz2648 I had the same experience at my local Best Buy. The X90L looked better to me than the Bravia 7 and I kept saying how can that be? The mini LED based on specs and also being more expensive than the X90L it should look better. I thought off viewing angle on the Bravia 7 was poor. I thought last years X93L mini led looked better than the Bravia 7. My issues with the X93L from last year is it did not include XR Clear and it was over priced compared to the competition. The X93L looked close to OLED and I actually liked it better than the Sony OLED A80L last year because it got brighter but the contrast also really looked OLED like on the X93L at least to my eyes. That said Brian makes a great point about store setups of TV's. You never know what the settings are set at on one TV vs another and have they been updated with the most recent software. Most are playing demos that make them look better than what they really are. I wish I could play real content on them and see them in their out of the box settings which is most important to me. My local Best Buy can't even get all the Sony TV's to run at the same time on the Kiosk wall display. Sad but it's about the only place I can go in my area to actually see decent quality TV's although Costco does carry some of the higher mid-tier TV's too but so many low end ones that don't personally interest me.
@@michaeldietz2648 I also with many people did the A B comparison at BB and Costco, and the video reviews and my group of 5 all 100% agree that the Bravia 7 is better. I many areas actually. The X90 makes sense on a blowout price. For ex., Redditors saying they have snagged the 85 inch X90CL at some Costco's for 1300. A bigger mental fight for me was Cyber Monday when I finally purchased the B7. I did it online at Costco and with the 200 off, it was 1599. But earlier in the day, I was in my local BB, they had the 77 inch LG C3 in boxes marked at 1500. I mean, Oled there! In the moment, I almost jumped on it. Then I thought, it is not that bright of a TV. It is going backwards in tech. I resisted and pulled the trigger for the 75 Bravia 7. Glad I did.
Sony looked far more detailed especially in vivid standard with the processing switched on. The downside of using filmmaker and the professional mode is that the majority of the processing is switched off. This isn’t so much of a problem if you’re playing 4K content that is calibrated to show off the TVs. But when you watched varied content it’s going to make a much bigger difference.
I bought a 75" Bravia 7 because of Sony reputation for being top notch quality. Loved the picture quality but the tv would randomly shut off on me sometimes and try to reboot itself brand new out the box less than two weeks after purchasing. I called sony to help and went through a series of steps messing with the settings to no avail. Finally after it kept doing it I returned it and got the Samsung QN90D instead. No more random shut offs. IMO the Bravia 7 has a slightly better realistic picture quality, but what good is that when the functionality sucks and there are software issues. For those reasons the Samsung wins out for me over Sony.
Sony's processing and color accuracy out of the box have always been deciding factors for me in my buying decision. UA-cam TV & other streaming apps make up most of the content I watch. If the content doesn't look good on the screen nothing else matters to me. Samsung picture is more punchy and I admit often more appealing to the human eye IMO. That has always been their signature, they know what they are doing but their picture processing leaves a bit to be desired by me.. People most often buy what looks good to their eyes though. I also prefer my TV have the option to display Dolby Vision content even though Dolby Vision has not yet been used to it's full potential by creators. Samsung supports HDR10+ but not that much content made for that format compared to Dolby Vision. Not a major buying decision for me but it is a small factor. Bottom line for me if price is close on comparable models I will buy the Sony at this point in time. I think for my picture tastes the biggest threat to Sony is Panasonic going forward since they also are known for there outstanding picture processing and color accuracy. They will need to get their TV's into stores in the US though for them to become an option for me.
Checkout the reflections before buying..you need to have an almost dark room to not see your face on the screen in dark scenes with the bravia 7. Otherwise an excellentttt tv.
@@rajeshnahar5585 reflections are only a problem in dark scenes, the tv gets bright enough in other scenes. You can always lower the brightnes if to bright. I don't want the risk or anxiety of burnin.
Samsung looks better in filmmaker mode but Sony looks better in standard and both look good in games. but I have a very bright room and brighter during the summer so it will probably be Samsung but I am also interested in Sony.
The Sony is the winner. It looks more accurate. The Samsung looks oversaturated and it's clipping but it still looks great I'd be happy with either set. It's back and forth at times.

The result is one of the most refined pictures I’ve seen on a mini-LED, and it’s surprising this TV isn’t getting more attention. I think it’s one of the best mini-LEDs on the market, and I’m excited to see your comparison video- it'll smoke the U8N! When will this video drop?
You are spot on. That’s why I chose QN85D and it’s amazing.
@HARIHARAN-t9l The QN85D is a great TV, but it runs a bit cool, and the gamma is too low out of the box. Here’s what to do:
Go to Movie Mode preset.
Adjust white balance:
Green High: -3
Green Low: -3
Blue High: -10
Blue Low: -10
Set Gamma to -2.
Set Shadow Detail to -1.
For Local Dimming:
Set to Standard for SDR.
I have been waiting for this comparison. Thank you, Brian!! For my use case, I would prefer the Sony Bravia 7.

Okay, so the Samsung looks punchy and good at first, but then you see how it blows out the whites. Also, the Samsung image sometimes takes on a "fake" or cartoonish quality to it. And the Sony has superior depth or sense of a 3D image. Wow, look at the white fringing on the top of the grasshopper, which is blown out on the Samsung but controlled on the Sony.
the TV don't have that good default calibration. rtings gave default calibration a 6.7, and after calibration 9.4.

Depends on the scene i would say its 50/50
Very interesting in the fact they both trade wins depending on the mode.

Thanks for this Brian. I am normally a Sony guy but I went with the Samsung QN90D on a Black Friday Sale. The Local dimming performance is just too impressive and I'm a PC Gamer as well so the 144hz and 1440p support was just too attractive as well.
Have you used it much in the one day since your comment? How you finding it so far? Tempted having had my Pany oled fail on me
@@thomasthetankengin7722 Honest opinion?

Sony Bravia seven definitely Wins this
Unfortunately in reality the Bravia 7 is much better. In the Best buys most of them are positioned badly and have not been updated
Glad I did.
They both look great but with my bright room I would have to take the 90d.
I’m going with Zenith and if you want the best you should as well. 😒😬
Most definitely!!😅😅
Back in the day they truly were one of the best tvs when they were made in Chicago.
How about qn95D
I'll be reviewing the 85" next week
Damn! That definitely sucks…. I have my Bravia for 5-6 months already and no issues at all. Hope it remains that way. 🙏
Bravia7 is beast
Samsung, Samsung, Samsung❤❤❤👍👍👍

The Sony is the winner. It looks more accurate. The Samsung looks oversaturated and it's clipping but it still looks great I'd be happy with either set. It's back and forth at times.
Isn’t the Q90D Samsungs flagship 4k tv? Wouldn’t the Bravia 9 be a apples to apples comparison
@brokenwrench404 nope! The QN95D is the Flagship, and here it is against the Bravia 9 ua-cam.com/video/-v47pWlfmFU/v-deo.html
Sony 7 hands down!
I think the detail pops more on the Sony
For me, Sony makes white more blue in some scenes, whereas samsung keeps white white
I love the view mode to resize the screen to fit. Looks better than zoom 1 or 2, that my visio monitor has. I think the Sony gets the win here.
Blacks looked raised on the Bravia 7.
