I've watched so many tutorials and this was by far the most fun. You are funny without sounding like you're trying to be funny. You refer to things as " this thing and that thing" instead of using terms we dont know yet. I think I finally found a series I can handle! I just got RPG MV last night it went on sale for $20!!!!

Thank you so much for this guide. My 9 year old just got RPG Maker MV with grand ideas for the game he was going to make. He quickly got completely overwhelmed by all the menus and nearly cried. You sir, are the ONLY engaging, humorous, and insightful teacher of this program on the entire Internet. I have a PDF book in my dropbox that's taught by a total dullard and he leaves out like 30,000 steps, and every other channel that covers this is so hyper and aimless and confusing, they got no business teaching newcomers anything. I wish they'd look up the meaning of 'conveyance', cause you got it down impeccably. This video is a much needed breath of fresh air man, and I found it right when I was ready to give up. You better believe I'm gonna crunch every video on this playlist!

I came across this video on google and as typing this I am watching #23 - Dungeons. I downloaded RPG maker MV around a week ago, and you are quite honestly the freaking man. I'm 31. I've been playing rpg's since before I can remember, and have always wanted to make my own without all the annoying crap, and have all the cool features I've always wanted. I have learned so much off of this video series. It's almost mind blowing that I haven't been making rpg's sooner. Your teaching style is exactly how a gamer like me thinks. "call this whatever skill for now" or "This is the whatever item that does this common event...like add this guy to our party". I just wanted to give a stellar review to show my appreciation and thanks for putting all of this out there in 2016. It's been 6 years and these videos are still helping people self educate.

SRDude I just want to personally thank you so much for your videos (and plugins as well)! I was always curious about RPG Maker even when I was a kid, since I watched so many playthroughs of RPG maker Horror games like the Witch's House, Ib, Mad Father, etc. But when the pandemic struck, and I had spare time on my hands, RPG Maker MV went on sale for $15, and I finally started using my time to make my first real test game, yet I was so lost. That's when you come in.
It was thanks to finding your videos on youtube that I learned and taught myself all about RPG Maker and its interface when I used to not even know the difference between the map button and the Events button. You have truly changed my life by helping me teach myself how to expand on a new hobby that I absolutely love doing nearly everyday. It is thanks to your references that I not only finished my 1st game, but begun working on my 2nd game (sometimes I still have to visit your Traits video!).
    Once again, thank you!!

That's funny, I was screwing around on this program for the first time today, just trying to figure it out for a bit. (it's fun to experience it with no knowledge for at least a little bit).
So I made a little map just like that, and did all kinds of experiments with it.
Now after about 24 hours, I have 3 different monster spawning zones with 3 different encounter tables, multiple sets of different monsters (at least 3) per zone of varying difficulty.
3 NPCs, and a custom character.
1st NPC was a boss minotaur that challenges you to fight some of his crappy minions, and if you say yes, he gives you a random encounter. If you say no, he attacks you with some backup flame imps. If you kill him, he disappears and laments his demise.
2nd NPC was Hello Bear. He was a bear that randomly wanders around the map and if you talk to him he says Hello. If you keep talking to him he roars and gives you a free potion.
After getting 4 potions, if you try again, he warns you (by name) to not get greedy or he'll eat you. If you keep pestering him 2 or 3 more times, you have to fight him as a hidden boss.
He is really tough and drops potions, gold and a lot of exp if you kill him.
3rd NPC was a rogue shopkeeper that I crafted myself from the character editor, and made him into a weapons shop, where you can sell stuff. He only appears if you gather some gems that I created in the item registry that are just valuable and do nothing.
I then made a bunch of different weapons, armors, classes, and items.. lost all of that due to a crash, redid a bunch of it for many hours, and then screwed around trying to install my 25 or so DLCs.... then I downloaded some more... then I realized if I don't organize them now, I never ever will.
It is just a single map, but I screwed around on it a lot. Oh, I even made custom skills, attacks, and buffs/debuffs like Stun, Bleed, Burn, Guard Break, Poison Sting, Poison Spell, Fire AOE magic, attack and speed buffs, a 5 hit omni-slash attack, and etc. And a bunch of custom consumable items and weapons/armor pieces.
Did you know you can add stuff like Pants, Shoes, and accessory #2 as options for your character? It's kind of a pain with the preset characters, but probably shouldn't use those anyway.
I even spent literal hours figuring out how the animations work and making my own custom skill animation. I took a arrow animation from the special arrow skill and made it green and then added a purple poison animation plus sound effects and ended up with a Poison Sting animation. That was an ordeal, not gonna lie. I wish someone had told me that each single tile of animation counts as a pattern number, and they number from left to right from 1 to like 99 or so and then cut off when you run out of them, and then the second animation starts over at pattern 100 and goes from there. SUPER CONFUSING. Also the targeting thing is not intuitive at all and the entire animation section is a major pain to use. I had to animate existing animations frame by frame just to get it to work. But I did get it eventually.
Also I'm shocked that I couldn't find a single bite animation. That seems like a no brainer for like 80% of beast like monsters.
So yeah.. had a lot of fun.. that was only like 2 days or so. Now I'm tired and watching tutorials so I can laugh at my stupid mistakes.

Im glad you're making tutorials on how to do stuff in the main game. Which also makes this switch friendly. I am planning on buying it on Switch soon. Yes, it may not have custom tilesets or plugins, but it still seems usable

Hey man this guide is Tops - I've really wanted to make my own RPG for like forever, ever since I first played The Secret of Mana. I messed around with a few programs over the years and after many failed attempts almost gave up. Then i found this guide and damn you made it look so easy I brought the program and after 4 hours have a small village and the setting for my game. Great stuff. I really hope to see this through and hopefully one day will post a link to my game here :)

aw man - for sure. your tutorials are by far the easiest to understand and some of the ways you solve problems are so much better than other really long winded ones eg password doors - yah I just learned that. Looked at 3 other peoples tutorials before yours and i was like OMG it's that easy..... You are so getting easter egged into my game haha

I'm glad I found these tutorials, last time I played an RPG maker game it was the very first one on the ps2, and that had two manuals 30 pages thick each... so playing the newer bigger version full of more stuff without any manuals seemed impossible!
