    The pokemon creators didn't put much thought on the encounter rates as they were creating the zubat cave.

      +Super Pony 3 It's funny because Zubat can destroy early on but later, it's just annoying.

      ComikkiLL a year late, but there is a plugin to make it so that enemies have levels too. Beware, however, because the stats you input for the enemies are their stats for level 1.

    i'll definitely have to follow that standard rule of 50-70 steps encounter rate when doing large maps, running into too many baddies when trying to progress is a major speed bump when you arent grinding.

    • @Echo607
      @Echo607  8 років тому +6

      :3 I like XP (though I used 2003 for a while)
      I still prefer XP to VX/A/MV, but MV just has a handful of features that... well... work good.
      I swear though, for every feature I find I like, they took something I find important out and I want to rage X_X

    • @Echo607
      @Echo607  8 років тому +8

      ~_~ They took out a BUNCH of little things I've grown used to having since XP (individual character sprite select in move routes, BATTLE WEATHER FOR SOME FREAKING REASON, sub blending...)
      I mean, there are plugins for most of those, but it's still a pain having to have OTHER PEOPLE make the features your program used to come with X_X

    • @robertturner4938
      @robertturner4938 8 років тому

      +Echo607 I did notice the custom path for movement was gone with the move routes. (that made cut scenes so easy.) I didn't notice before now the battle weather isn't there too.. man.Your talking an at the least, they could have tile sets be importable and converted. that way all the 2003, xp, vxace tilesets can still be utilized.

    i know this is an old video, but i love listening to your videos while i draw or work on my game or whatever ;_; so i come back to them. anyway! the npc thing, i recently saw a game make the npcs so well that it really made the world feel incredibly alive. it's called genshin impact, you've probably heard of it if you've seen anything about the gaming world recently. i talked to an old man working at a winery and he started going on about his son guy who joined the knights to become a hero and his dad was singing his praises. then later i discovered guy was an actual npc who was cleaning up after a monster attack, and then even more later on he had me deliver a letter to his dad. these are npcs you don't typically think about.
    even just today, i was randomly exploring the world and i discovered a couple resting, where the wife was pretending to be ill to keep her husband from going back to work as a sailor and leaving her. a lot of people overlook npcs, but they really do have an impact on the game.

    This is incredible. Thank you so much. I just started using RPG Maker MV because I've had this idea for an RPG scratching at the back of my mind for years and I had to be able to visualize it (even in such a limited format). I think I'll be seeing a lot more of your videos in the months to come.

    The design tips really helped me make my first game even though i was using Ace, i started out with a very small rectangle room with my main character being the only person in the house, but then later on i had my character bring him a snack from next door despite the fact that his house was literally a restyling of my main character's house, i didnt think this was weird until i actually saw this and realized "oh yeah, houses aren't built like that

    Until recently, I hadn't used RPG Maker much since XP almost 10 years ago and I'm just now getting back in with MV. It's so random what's intuitive, what just comes back to you, and what makes you feel like a dummy. Thank you so much for making these videos! :)

    That last clip, the one of your first "game", actually gave me some inspiration. There's an idea I've had for a while inspired by a UA-cam video I saw, and the simplicity of what you showed me has given me an idea on how to bring it to fruition. Now all I need to do is some sprite work.

  • @EIBrown

    Good suggestions, especially on your use of images to produce lighting effects. The square, blocky, overly spacious houses and dungeons are a long time pet peeve of mine. Personally, I hate random encounters, except maybe on a world map, and want to use an event based encounter system similar to Earthbound/Mother 2.
    An additional tip on auto-tiles: You can hold shift and right-click on any auto-tile configuration you want then place it by holding shift and left-clicking. This lets you draw any form of an auto-tile, not just the center, anywhere you want.
    And, to keep events from walking over certain areas or blocking walkways, I heard you can use region mapping combined with a certain plugin, but I don't know what that plugin is or where to find it.
    Also, props to you for picking the same name as the main character in my main story.

    • @EIBrown
      @EIBrown 7 років тому

      I use a somewhat more elaborate system than this, but it's the same concept at it's core. I stole the idea from a VX game that used a similar encounter system, using its code as the basis for my MV version, along with some plugins to make it work the way I want. Monster sprites won't start chasing you with my system until you move in range to trigger them.

    I was working on a little warm up game about a guy getting teleported to another universe where everyone uses textboxes to talk, and he's the only guy that has voice acting over his (new) textbox, as hes a normal person from another universe, which is kinda some sort of fourth-wall-break-joke game. Ofcourse, he gets bullied by the townsvolk as he's being called a "weird outsider" and they're not used to his kind of communication, and he bullies the townsvolk back, because he never seen this kind of communication aswell. Somewhere he gets a partner that only talks in textboxes, as she explains some plot why they lost their ability to talk with voices and how people's minds got corrupted which made them forgot that they even had voices to begin with yackity smackity bla bla bla spoilers spoilers. However, I gave up on it cause I can't draw for shit, and nobody of my talented friends wanted to help me out. Got any hints for that?
    Edit: as i will probably never finish it (never say never though), and I would be the voiceactor for that guy,
    some of the jokes would have been like "Hey, keep in mind that I'm not a paid voice actor, so I can't help it being that crappy, deal with it if you don't like my voice!"
    or stuff like "...In my world we use voices instead of text, and I'm bad at reading. So we both got ourselves a problem here."
    etc. Bad jokes, but that's basically a bit of what I wanted to do. Idk why it was neccessary to add this here but ok.

    Hmm I think for me disabling saves can work so long as you keep a good enough replacement for it. For example save points in my games not only are featured in dungeons, towns and CONVENIENT locations.
    They also heal the party to full health so when you're getting low on resources/items a huge sigh of relief happens - I've had people playtest it and they never found much issue with the save points too nor were they abused either! For example a save point in a dungeon would be featured in areas that you are about to enter where you cannot backtrack to (like a boss battle or something idk).

    you are correct that basically you should never use the prebuilt maps. i have generally 2 exceptions you are throwing a wrench into expection(ie built a secret path off the map you don't see and put that prebuilt map like 1/2 way through your game.) or (you destroying that world map 30-45 secs in. I say if you are spending more than a min or two in that map spend time building it. Prebuilts are WONDERFUL for cut scenes and that is about it.). I have an intro that uses 1 floor of a prebuilt from vxace and unless you do nothing you will be out of there in 1 min. that is all the encounters and things in it TAKE EXACTLY 2 MINS if you are SUPER SLOW. it just introduce the 4th fate and the stories villain that is it that is all it does. I didn't want to spend an hour making 2-3 mins max map so prebuilt it is. The thing a person making a game should ask before they use a prebuilt is 1. HOW long is the player expected to be there if more than a few minutes do the work. 2.is that Prebuilt Map NECESSARY to the story in any way? if not build your own. Like the intro map the other prebuilt has a funtion that is the secret wall that you will miss until you get further into the story and are told about that hidden wall. you may get lucky and find it but you are most likely gong to miss it because you recognize the map. Both are effective uses of a prebuilt maps.

    Besides speaking a little too fast, i suppose because you are excited about your good work, i loved it. I m starting to create my own games and i was using Ace then i decided to buy MV on a sale i dont know if i ll be able to use most of the resources i had for ACE in MV yet but i m watching the videos to see if there are too much changes on how the creation process work you sure have a huge amont of them for me to start. I ll be watching and hearing your adorable voice for some while. Thanks for the tips.

      I'm not sure about the specifics, but you can convert previous RM games into MV (except for scripts). I know you can convert VX Ace games and presumably VX games too, but I'm not sure about XP, 2003, 2000... *are* there any other ones?

      +Echo607 that is awesome quick question ever run into something not working like a skill not showing a cool down or a battle cutscene playing another cutscene with it... like its bugged?

    • @Echo607
      @Echo607  9 років тому

      Um... I don't think so O_o Though I haven't gotten a chance to test out the inner workings of skills and battles in much detail for MV yet.
      I guess, go over everything and make sure it's all set up right. Battle-cutscene-playing-another-cutscene seems like a strange problem -- makes me think of the Yep_Basetroopevents plugin.

    • @ShiroNikku
      @ShiroNikku 9 років тому

      +Echo607 it's really weird one minute it was working the next it wasn't. like I had to move the 2 skills effected to 0042 and rake our the cutscene completely on troop 001

    • @Echo607
      @Echo607  9 років тому

      If a cutscene was on toop1, and you had the basetroopevents plugin, it would try to play that scene on all the other battles.
      If you have it set up that way, that is.

    Echo, +1 for mentioning the encounter rates... But you also should have mentioned the difficulty curve, There is nothing more annoying than to have to waste 30 to 40 minutes just on boring levelling up on weak monsters so that you can beat some very difficult ones. And not just once, but every damn time! When I encounter a terribly balanced game, I just use Cheat engine to develop my character fast...
