@@bababanana20123 It’s not the fact that it’s a jrpg and not another genre, it’s just that specifically the random encounters mechanic in games did not age well, at least in action-jrpgs you get to dodge the enemies when they get tedious to fight. I'm playing through the game now for the first time, and I'm about 6 characters in. I'm enjoying the game so far, but I have to agree with Dunkey when he talks about the games momentum resetting every time you get to a new character. I was hoping your current party members would affect these encounters more, but they all play out the same as if you had just started the game and picked your first character.
Yep. Octopath Traveler has superb music, presentation and combat, but the story is complete ass. I'm replaying the game right now while skipping all the cutscenes. Every single one of them bores me to tears
@@KashiwaDaisuke true the game, besides the story, was good enough for me to drop several hundred hours into the game to 100% it. Music is by far the best part about the game,
i think me and over 8k people were honestly dissapointed. This showed so much potential, like i wait weeks for another dunkey video and yet we still have no bookworm adventures? Reggie please
I'm loving the game... But not in the way I assume many people hoped THEY would. I enjoy the mild grind and bosses, as We'll as just the simplicity of the field actions. The individual character stories for me are the icing on the cake, though I've done the first chapters for 4 characters.
It’s a great, if overall by-the-numbers JRPG. Thoroughly enjoyed the 58 hours I spent with it, though I do wish it made an effort to include the other characters in each other’s stories. That’s my take, Your Excellency
As someone who octopathed the traveller, this is entirely correct. The game is really really slow 50 percent of the time and the only main character interactions that you get are unvoiced travel banter that appears once per chapter. Half the time it makes no sense why there the stereotypical characters are working together in the first place. And the weird half-hidden multiclassing feature, while cool, completely destroys the unique gameplay styles that each character had previously. I like cheesy writing and characters though so 6/10
I think Dunkey's dislike of JRPG style games is pretty known, and I can understand the statements made about them. As someone who's been playing them for a long time, it hits a lot of good marks and definitely smacks of that old school polish. Highly recommend it to anyone who has any interest in the genre.
Gio If you enjoyed persona 5 I guarantee you won't enjoy octopath as much as it. If I were you and I had a pstv or ps vita or even access to a ps2 emulator, I'd highly recommend giving persona 4 golden/vanilla persona 4 a go. It's a JRPG experience that not only will feel familiar when compared to persona 5, but will also feel fresh simply because the dungeon crawling is completely different. There's no sneaking around aspect, and the game encourages you to go into battle head on regardless of being seen without any random encounters. With fun combat, quick dungeon crawling and a great story to boot, persona 4 is a game that somebody who enjoyed 5 will like a lot more when compared to a game like octopath traveler.
@@gffg387 the snail is low level, even with "level scaling" there would be no point to it, since that means there is a stat increase in the npc but nowere close to the players, and even then it means the game is shit. you cant as others even in other forums stated that random encounters even at low level areas, you cant one shot them. the break mechanic is shit, so yeah the game is awful, you have to WAIT AND NOT DO ANYTHING FOR IT TO FILL so of course its going to be bad if you litterly have to NOT DO ANYTHING, the combat pacing is going to be bad. The pacing is so bad and slow in battles, that to increase it you have to NOT play the game and wait for the meter to fill, which is bad, tedious and boring gameplay. others didnt buy it because of this and what others said due to these negative reviews and made sure that it took what? 5 YEARS before another octopath traveler game was released. the gameplay is 80% the same, the graphics style dont take alot to make, so it kinda proves dunkey made this happen
You know, I gotta say mad respect for the JRPG community. Whenever Dunkey puts out even a highly comedic game "review", fans get all pissy in the comment section. But here? I can still easily find the JRPG fans, but for a different reason: they're openly accepting and often times agreeing with his criticism. Respecting the fact he doesn't like games in this format. Listing flaws he may have missed as well as great things he didn't touch on. I may not like the same games as you guys, but I like how open you guys are to negative comments about what you love. Virtually every other gaming community could learn from y'all
Maybe because the game has a niche audience and just became popular out of nowhere, suprising everyone. If he tried saying anything about dark souls he wouldve been crucified in the comments.
Exactly, that's why this video is kinda pointless. He's already expressed that he hates nothing more in a game than turn-based RPG's, so why would you review one? What's the point?
katelyn ast Kind of. It's fairly clear he hasn't played past all 8 optional first chapters. The game really shines once you get to the level 2's and you could theoretically just skip some of the characters. He also didn't at all focus on the battle system or beauty of the game's art and music.
local weeb who loves everything japanese makes a generic comment and gets 150 upvotes from his fellow weebs; no more at 11 because it takes a specific brain parasite to actually enjoy anime
The story telling in JRPGs is vastly overrated. Octopath honestly has better story telling than say, FF7. The stories in Octopath are small scale, but they feel more relatable. FF7 is just nonsense from start to finish.
I love how the ds dragon quests deal with the monotony of repeated fights; the enemies chase you on the map, so with a bit of finesse you can avoid them entirely. And when they are significantly weaker than you, they'll run away, and you can chase them if you actually need to grind them.
Late to this but I wish some people referred back to his 'Game Critics' video. You don't have to agree with his views, just understand his consistency. He's allowed to try games he doesn't typically like, because you never know, you might actually enjoy *this one.* Case and point for Dunk: Hates anime and turn based RPG's, but he thought Persona 5, a combo of those exact 2 things, was *fun.* Octopath didn't do it for him. So be it. Will admit though, I wish he at least gave it some credit for the visuals and music because *damn* that's some good shit, not many could deny that.
Well... Actually I would say Octo has a better combat than Persona tho... at least at beginning since there's no fuckin SP issue. So I guess maybe he played very easy on that game... I didn't see in this video that he showed the break system+bp, which is basically the best way to solve the problem and the core of the game. However I have no idea why the producer removed the enemy rate adjustment in BDFF tho...
I gotta say that the visuals of Octopath Traveler are such a travesty. One of the worst ways to combine current day graphics technology with old art styles.
The fighting in this game is like eating crab. Fighting low level enemies in unsatisfying because you spend so much time breaking the defence to get so little meat. Its not worth the effort. Fighting challenging monsters is like a large king crab. The shell is tough so you got to use all your tricks to break it and then dig into the juicy meaty goodness. So satisfying.
@@capitaorodrigo2886 because everybody eats and can relate an experience they never did with one they have done before. For better or worse, it has the elements of classic JRPGs. If you like lots of talking, mild to severe grinding (depending on how fast you wanna go), and dont mind random encounters, you will probably like the game But if you dont, then yeah, obviously you won't like the game. I know Dunk jokes a lot and I respect his opinion when he is more serious, but I wouldn't let this video be a hard Yes or No for the game. I, and many of my friends, are completely obsessed
TheBokkelul I mean yeah, he doesn't like lengthy dialogue, grinding, and random encounters so it's pretty clear he'd not like the game. Absolutely nothing wrong with that, but for people who do like those things I think the game is very good and shouldn't be (too) swayed by this
i've yet to grind and i'm on everyone's chapter 3 content(everyone only has four chapters). Dialogue is important, for y'know, story. RNG combat sucks though but I just run if I don't wanna fight.
Friendly reminder it's okay to disagree with Dunkey. He can review games and genres he doesn't like, and we can disagree because we like those things. That is okay.
ArthemistheSwordsman besides his critique of the story how can you consider this a review? It’s “yo the story sucks also did I mention I hate most jrpgs.. the end”
I understand the annoying random encounters, and how some people can dislike the combat, but the necessity of grinding is nonexistent. If you want to burn through the story overlevelled as hell then yes, there is grinding. But I haven't encountered a single boss where I had to go back and grind and I'm halfway through chapter 3s with a 4 character team. Some of the bosses have been difficult, but I haven't needed to grind at all and beat the bosses within usually 1-2 tries. And I'm not really experienced in the genre either
I mean I love the game but that has a lot to do with me liking turn-based combat and not minding random encounters that much, especially when the game gives you tools to avoid them at least somewhat, while it is one of the things Dunkers here hates most in video games, because he is, and I'm paraphrashing him here, "impatient."
Yeah, I like Octopath but Dunkey's not wrong. The characters and plots are pretty generic even for a JRPG, and there's not enough focus on any one character to get much depth even if that weren't the case. It's relaxing and fun to play for me, but it feels like a missed opportunity, especially the almost total lack of any interaction between our characters.
When my monkey brain connected that “Octopath” means 8 paths I realized hey the title is kind of cool. I mean it’s straight to the point and sounds unique enough.
I enjoy turn based games so I've been enjoying my time through the game. Still you bring up some good points on the game on how dull the character interaction is. Still I've been having a blast playing through the game :D
Yeah I def want more of their interactions, and the banter isn’t enough. Plus, you can only hear the comments from the characters in your party, not the rest /:
ya dunkey's made it known in the past that he's not super big on turn-based jrpgs so I don't really trip when he says he's not a fan of one I like. He probably doesn't like I Am Setsuna or many Fire Emblem games either but I personally love them.
I mean... Dunkey, I love ya, but this game has everything you've said you don't like gameplay-wise, said yourself in your Game Critics video. Why even review this? Yes, a review from you saying Persona 5 is good definitely shows its appeal, but a review from you saying an RPG doesn't fit your tastes honestly doesn't mean a great deal, and you yourself basically admitted that. And that battle example? You're supposed to abuse weaknesses in order to beat the enemies quickly. You specifically took Olberic all the way to the Riverlands, a route which would have you recruit at least one party member (Primrose or Cyrus) that can dominate that slug and break its shield unless you (A) decided to not put them in your party or (B) purposely skipped them. It's kind of deceptive. (It's no Knack 2 though)
I was gonna make a similar comment. I'm glad someone else remembered that about Dunkey. To be fair it isn't labeled as a Dunkview. I assume you're right on the cherry picking (I haven't played the game), but when it lacks the Dunkview title he tends to do stuff like that. Even if it seems more serious than humorous like this video.
RaineTCG But it shouldn't be if you play the game correctly! My point is in order to get that footage to show how long it goes through fights he basically had to ignore the system that makes fights go fast and ignore the characters that enable it. Of course if you decide to not do it in the easiest manner the weak fights will take time.
jdl9xc I haven't played the game mind you, but I think the point he's trying to make is that random turn base encounter takes you completely out of what you're trying to do just so that you could fight one little bitch enemy. Even if you can kill him with one hit, it'd still just be pointless and monotonous seeing the transition animations play over and over. Dunkey was pretty fair about this video honestly, he brought up some valid examples
Not one of Dunkey's best videos. You can tell he managed to get to the first chapters of some characters before he stopped playing. Enough to get a cursory glance of the game, but like most JRPGs, not enough to get into the depth of the mechanics and story. How do I know? All of the boss battle footage was from chapter 1, and some moments he only had one character.
It's common for creators, when doing a cursory view of a game, to only show content from the start of the game. That way the novelty from later parts of the game is left for the viewer to discover if they decide the game interests them. You can find instances of this practice in almost any game review out there.

@@bababanana20123 It’s not the fact that it’s a jrpg and not another genre, it’s just that specifically the random encounters mechanic in games did not age well, at least in action-jrpgs you get to dodge the enemies when they get tedious to fight. That’s why games like DQ that let you see the enemies on the map are actually enjoyable to play, you decide what fights to pick while maintaining the turn based approach.

I'm playing through the game now for the first time, and I'm about 6 characters in.

I think Dunkey's dislike of JRPG style games is pretty known, and I can understand the statements made about them. is this game worth it? just curious, i like persona 5 and i wonder if it’s that authentic.
@Gio
It's not a game changer, so it depends on if you grew up/are fond of JRPGs.
Gio I wouldn't put on Persona's 5 level. I admit it's a hard game to recomend.
If you have a Switch though, you can try to demo.
With fun combat, quick dungeon crawling and a great story to boot, persona 4 is a game that somebody who enjoyed 5 will like a lot more when compared to a game like octopath traveler.

the break mechanic is shit, so yeah the game is awful, you have to WAIT AND NOT DO ANYTHING FOR IT TO FILL
so of course its going to be bad if you litterly have to NOT DO ANYTHING, the combat pacing is going to be bad.
The pacing is so bad and slow in battles, that to increase it you have to NOT play the game and wait for the meter to fill, which is bad, tedious and boring gameplay. others didnt buy it because of this and what others said due to these negative reviews and made sure that it took what? 5 YEARS before another octopath traveler game was released. the gameplay is 80% the same, the graphics style dont take alot to make, so it kinda proves dunkey made this happen

katelyn ast Kind of. It's fairly clear he hasn't played past all 8 optional first chapters. The game really shines once you get to the level 2's and you could theoretically just skip some of the characters. He also didn't at all focus on the battle system or beauty of the game's art and music.

For better or worse, it has the elements of classic JRPGs. If you like lots of talking, mild to severe grinding (depending on how fast you wanna go), and dont mind random encounters, you will probably like the game
But if you dont, then yeah, obviously you won't like the game. I know Dunk jokes a lot and I respect his opinion when he is more serious, but I wouldn't let this video be a hard Yes or No for the game. I, and many of my friends, are completely obsessed
idunno for him it def seems to be a hard no :p
TheBokkelul I mean yeah, he doesn't like lengthy dialogue, grinding, and random encounters so it's pretty clear he'd not like the game. Absolutely nothing wrong with that, but for people who do like those things I think the game is very good and shouldn't be (too) swayed by this
I just don't get why JRPG's still have an audience. Why do you love random encounters, grinding, and tons of dialogue?
When i play a JRPG, i never have to grind. I'm almost done with chapter 2 for each character and I havn't needed to grind at all.
i've yet to grind and i'm on everyone's chapter 3 content(everyone only has four chapters).

It’s “yo the story sucks also did I mention I hate most jrpgs.. the end”
Too many people that isn't ok with this. Just look at this comment section.
bragelbytes He mentioned the combat, necessity of grinding, and annoying random encounters, jut to name a few.
And I'm not really experienced in the genre either
or maybe he just shares his honest opinion, without any underlying plan?
People in here acting like Dunko just clowned on their favorite anime
I mean I love the game but that has a lot to do with me liking turn-based combat and not minding random encounters that much, especially when the game gives you tools to avoid them at least somewhat, while it is one of the things Dunkers here hates most in video games, because he is, and I'm paraphrashing him here, "impatient."
Plus, they do eventually interact.
J Miller they interact way more in chapters 2, but it's not final fantasy.
When my monkey brain connected that “Octopath” means 8 paths I realized hey the title is kind of cool. I mean it’s straight to the point and sounds unique enough.
I just feel the need to iterate that I have not played Octopath Traveller.

I enjoy turn based games so I've been enjoying my time through the game. Still you bring up some good points on the game on how dull the character interaction is. Still I've been having a blast playing through the game :D
wat007 I'm loving it. The grind isn't nearly as bad as most rpgs and there's so much story to go through.
Yeah I def want more of their interactions, and the banter isn’t enough. Plus, you can only hear the comments from the characters in your party, not the rest /:
Still doesn't compare to knack.
ya dunkey's made it known in the past that he's not super big on turn-based jrpgs so I don't really trip when he says he's not a fan of one I like. He probably doesn't like I Am Setsuna or many Fire Emblem games either but I personally love them.
wat007 I was going to write my own comment but you did it for me! :D
RaineTCG If he had literally any other character it would have been 1 turn. But he went out of his way to cherry pick a bad example.
He's level 20. He definitely has at least four party members at this point lol.
Philip Wybenga He says near the end that waiting through the monotny of the game isnt worth it so its certaintly possible.
As I understand it, too, you don't HAVE to play through every character's opening chapter when you recruit them, do you?
Or, he was trying to avoid putting in too many spoilers?
It's common for creators, when doing a cursory view of a game, to only show content from the start of the game. That way the novelty from later parts of the game is left for the viewer to discover if they decide the game interests them. You can find instances of this practice in almost any game review out there.
I swear if you get through the first 20 hours it's a great game!
Your excellency is nitpicking and biased. I win your excellency. Bye bye your excellency.
