      Sequel:. Hubble loses his spouse, again. And is retired from whatever he used to do. Packing up he peruses old photos and sees her. Cut to moving van and car driving Hubble to high end retirement center in (wherever Megan and Harry live) and there Hubble runs into his love again. This time it's a rom-com. Yes??? With Sussex Royal look alikes and plastic babies and the real Melissa McCarthy. And a billionaire truck driver who rescues dogs all over the USA.

      that while we cherish

      when a memory is
      painful/traumatic,

    Saw a woman I loved deeply last year for the first time in 10 years. Chance meeting, we just smiled and looked a little and she nodded and smiled again. It's like two old souls just drifting past each other again, all those times, all that love and affection that once was and now just a memory. Scenes like this make me tear up and I think back to her and wish her well in life.

    • @steveb1164
      @steveb1164 Рік тому +20

      Two theories exist to explain her loss: 1). Her unpopularity in Hollywood at the time; and 2). The deletion of scenes--esp. the political ones--undermined her chances.

    • @emmalancaster2013
      @emmalancaster2013 Рік тому +44

      Hollywood hates her, because she refuses to conform. She “acts too much like a man.” Hence, her total lack of directorial nominations, even though she deserved at least one, for her great work in “Yentl.” I did find it ironic they let her present the Best Director award once, probably because everyone was certain Kathryn Bigelow would become the first female director to win the prize - and she did. (Still think reigning Best Director Danny O’Boyle should have been co-presenter). Like Ida Lupino and a few others, Streisand was a true pioneer, paving the way for other female directors to enjoy the acclaim she was denied. Two other female directors have since taken the prize (although not nominated, Sian Heder directed last year’s best picture winner, “Coda,” and won the Oscar for Best adapted screenplay). I respect Barbra’s talent and determination enormously. Most of the public does, too.

    This one scene really exemplifies what the gamut of emotions between a chance meeting between old lovers would likely be. First the surprise and joy of randomly seeing each other again; some small talk, her quick exit, and him not letting her go that easily by following her across the street. Then the heartfelt embrace that rekindled some deep feelings, briefly discussing their child together, and then finally, him recovering and accepting reality by stepping back and cooly saying goodbye as she did the same by ending with the as detached ban the bomb. While inside, the emotional after effects would take much longer to heal. Great scene!

      Como pode alguém normal q não é um criminoso ter um filho junto por amor, uma paixão, algo maravilhoso não ter o q conversar? Um filho, um ser humano, alguém por quem se luta por um mundo melhor, como uma criança vai entender essa mãe e a ausência desse pai. O egoísmo desses dois está acima de qualquer princípio, talvez pq no filme eles não tenham família.

    Katie always thought Hubble wasted his talents, and you can see it in her eyes when he says he's writing for Television. She's smiling but disappointed. It is a great movie, but in the end, he abandoned his child. He can't come for a drink and face the daughter he abandoned. "How is she?" which is code for "How is she. I don't know because I abandoned her." "Is he a good father since I am a crappy one?!?!" He wants the easy life. The pretty girl who doesn't say a word. The easy job. No trouble, no loses, no principles. And Katie is willing to fight for everything. She's strong, he's weak and that's why it didn't work out.

      Hubbell's career was going to be destroyed if he didn't divorce his Commie wife. That's why Hubbell and Katie split up. The Witch Hunts of the early 1950's destroyed many lives, but Hubbell and Katie were not a good match from the very start. I'm writing this from the perspective of old age, but not everyone wants to go through life fighting for everything all the time. It's exhausting and Katie is exhausting. I found her irritating from the opening of the movie, and felt that Streisand and Redford had no chemistry, until this last scene. The dialog is perfect, the actors are pitch perfect. The feeling is still there, though they have led separate lives for many years. Sadness and regret for what they had to sacrifice are also there. When you've had to give up something where you invested your whole heart and soul, but too many forces are arrayed against you, survival demands that you be a Good Loser, regroup, and move on. After Streisand states, "I've had more practice," then tenderly brushes Hubbell's hair off his forehead, and they embrace one last time, I am in floods. This scene is beautifully played and completely devastating.

    A beautiful finale and a pristinely filmed scene. I especially like the small, telling moments such as when Hubbell's wife clutches his arm which draws Katie's attention and brings her back to the reality. Also, when they embrace at the end, Katie's eyes are closed but open at the moment she realizes that he is embracing her as tightly as she is him. Barbra's eyes sell this scene and display her emotions perfectly.

      Something must have been done with lighting or in post production because her eyes truly pop throughout this scene. Sure she was born with big blue eyes, but here they positively glisten.

      A decade after _The Way We Were_ was released, Robert Redford contacted screenwriter Arthur Laurents to discuss the possibility of collaborating on a sequel where Hubbell and his daughter, a radical like Katie, would meet and the complications that would ensue. Ultimately, the idea was dropped.

    I remember watching this with my mother I was maybe 15 . When this scene happened I
    flipped out . I said “ mom but they love each other so much … it’s so obvious ! Why do they torture each other by not being together? My mother said “ sometimes love isn’t enough “ . I was so angry I said “that’s the dumbest thing ever love conquers all mom “
    She said “When you are a grown woman you will realize that life can be complicated and love doesn’t always conquer all “. She added it’s wonderful when it does but sometimes it can’t and this movie shows that perfectly . To this day this scene makes me cry and especially now because I had to let go of someone who
    I loved for self preservation . Great movie this scene is in my
    Top 10 movie scenes of all
    Time .

    ⭐ Robert Redford is a class act. He cares about animals & the environment, and does something about it. He takes his work seriously, but doesn't have the typical Hollywood ego. He's intelligent and articulate. And not to mention drop-dead gorgeous and charismatic. On a scale of 1 to 10, he's a 30...!!! ⭐
