Wake up. Hubbell was a lazy sellout and Katie was an activist who couldn't stand by injustice and wanted to fight to make this world a better and safer place to live...it was so obvious when they meet by chance at the end, that they both still loved each other, that they had missed each other - first thing he asks her, you still married? Trust me, after a few years of being with that quiet dull af unopinionated dispassionate no life of her own ash blonde Barbie, you can bet that passionate presence was missed. @Inna G thank god lol. What a mean spiteful spew that was. Men may fuck anything but they certainly don't marry out of pity. Btw, while looking to see if I had gotten the boat quote correct, I found something called deleted scenes on here. You should watch it. Turns out because Katie was blacklisted when informed on by her old prom date, james woods, Hubbell could not get any work, so as it turns out, she suggests they split, and they did mutually agree to in order to save his career. Both still in love, he wasnt going to leave her or their child, and the affair had nothing to do with their divorce. Sorry. Take good care.
He was a brunette. Look at his roots. First time I noticed it and yours was the first comment. Lol. he definitely needed his roots dyed here. I thought he was a natural blonde till i saw this scene. Every other time he was in a movie, his roots were touched up. I recently saw a video with his natural hair. Its medium to dark brown. Look at his part.
@@HolgerRuneFan right. His roots are very dark and if you look at photos of him early on, his hair was medium-dark brown. So I think the blond highlights here and also maybe he made his hair more red than blonde in certain films
One of the greatest movies of all time. An incredible love story. I can see it over and over again. Both are my favorite actors because of the movie. Amazing movie, amazing talent, amazing love story. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I don't care how beautifully in love they are! If they don't share the same principles or have common grounds to stand on, that love will starve and die or collapse to pieces. It's a lesser version of being uncommonly yoked.
So true!! And I'm old enough to have seen quite a few wrecks in my lifetime. Just recently here on UA-cam, a couple who travelled the world and vlog their travels, broke up because after 7 years of travelling and living together. They decided to settle down in Mexico. He wants to have children and she doesn't; that was the deal breaker.
It’s that whole “opposites attract” thing, which I think only works on certain things. Values and principles, no. Some personality traits like outgoing vs. shy or quiet vs. gregarious, yes.
After seeing this movie in the 70s and recently, I don't believe he was ever in love with her. She was physically attracted to him, and saw him as a project. She was not his type and in this scene had no interest in her, just crashing at her house. The food kept him there. And with her strong personality, she kept pushing....he gave in, then left in the end.
The portion of the Moie breaks, me up although she is so intelligent, she so wants to be A part of his world, I love this Film, even though she does not get to keep her prince, it shows what A strong woman was, so much like the real woman we have grown to love, Cheers Mrs Brolin for all your incredible films, Albums, and Concerts., Brava, Brava,❤❤❤❤❤😂
Yep growing up in NY and going to school there in the 60's and working there in the 60's early 70's was so great! So exciting and bustling. Now a hell hole. So glad I left years ago!
This actor Robert Redford....he has such range. He acts so different here than he does in the movie: Barefoot in the Park with Jane Fonda, and even more different than with Natalie Wood in This Property Is Condemned. He makes subtle changes that are very impactful in each movie.
Redford is different with BS because he said he wasn't comfortable with her. Something like that. He liked Natalie however Wood and was in her wedding in real life. This is probably why these two have no chemistry - Redford just couldn't click with BS. He said in an interview that he wore two underpants for the love scenes. 😮😮 Redford was more comfortable with Meryl strep also. It took the director two years to finally get Redford to do this movie - Redford really didn't want to work with BS.
Love love love this movie. Now I must go watch it again!!! How did we go from women and men dressing with dignity and respect to I'm scared to even venture out🤪
the minute she said she got steaks with her ration stamps, i would have picked her up, kissed, her, proposed, and then spoiled her for the rest of her life.
I think this is the first co-star Streisand had who was on the same level. Most of her male co-stars were just there: the male lead that she reacts to. Redford, however, gave her something to react against. I think it’s the first time she had chemistry with a co-star.
Well, he's in his 80's now. The version of him when he was in his prime as here is long gone. No one in their 80's is going to be anything close to what they were in their 30's and 40's...that's just the way it goes. He still looked pretty good into his late 50's and early 60's. It's like an athlete, you reach your peak and then It's slowly downhill after.
We all age. I’m 45 and never really saw this movie. Wasn’t alive yet, but it always melts my heart to see all these senior celebrities so young. We all were young and beautiful once.
@@auroraaurora2420 I know we all age. I was young and pretty when I watched the movie and now I'm 71 but what I meant is that he had such a beautiful face and even his face skin has changed a lot. I used to have breakfast in a place in NY City where he used to go too. I saw him once long time ago.
Katie was the intellect and refused anything but perfection and that is what she saw in Hubble. Hubble warned her she didn't fit into his type of woman. She just refused to listen and history repeated itself. He turned out to be a failure in her eyes, no book and did not live up to what she wanted. Yes, I love the movie no matter how many times I have watched it. I see Hubble differently everytime I see it.
I am in my 60's and remember this movie, yet my life had only begun without any real life experiences yet. I'm reading the comments bc I want to see if anyone sees this scene as I do, never having realized its impact before. I totally agree with you. As a Jewish woman myself, who always sees herself as an activist, I have always attracted weak men who at first saw my strength as something they admired, but later resented. I can say that in both my marriages, I am not sure there was love from my partner and I can so relate to how Barbras character was constantly trying to win him over, when it was evident that he really never wanted her. A gorgeous Gentile man with a strong Jewish woman...He was no match for her. She saw in him a man she could mold, but she didn't have the Gentile, soft spoken woman personality that made him the man in the relationship. (before anyone reacts to that comment, most Jewish women would understand.) I always tried to be that kind of woman to my husband who began resenting my strong personality that once attracted him to me. She was always trying to help and "better" better someone who didn't want to be "bettered". Its bc her character was very intelligent and sharp, and he was laid back. I have seen resentment from my spouses for this character in me. She was just too needy and wanted to be in control. This scene is very sad bc she had to coerce him to have dinner and it appears he gave in without true desire. It was that way through the entire movie. I saw the movie about a decade ago, and didn't believe he really ever loved her. It reminds me of the scene in Saturday night fever where the friend of Travoltas coerces him to intimacy with her. She is a pathetic character in that movie. The same with Barbras character.
@@crochethappy3786 I believe in the end she finally saw him as he wanted to be. I believed she still loved him, but not like the way they were. I also love she was her original self, hair and all. Still protesting.
I think that Katie loved him from afar, knowing that he was ‘Unobtainable’ to her. She knew she wasn’t a classic beauty, like his other women. She had so much depth of character though. And Hubbell was just gorgeous 😀 I was in a similar situation. Which is why I understand Katie so much. Heartbreaking 💔

I thought the same. Brad Pitt is his generation Robert Redford. They’ve played similar characters in some movies. Both devilishly handsome with real acting ability.
I had a 10 year relationship with the greatest woman in the world, we were very different, and she looked at me the sameway Katie looks at Hubbell, she did anything and everything to show me her love, but her needs and mine were different, and she lives in a different city as i do, and she is married now to another man. She allways believed that i didn´t love her as much as she did me, just as some will believe Hubbell doesnt really love Katie, but i can certify, that I miss her and loved her more than i have ever loved anyone, and to this day, i still shed tears when i think of her. She will forever be in my heart as my one true love even though i will never see her in person again. I´m sure there are many others in my exact shoes. Its just how things are. and this movie is a perfect example, with incredible acting and energy, just looking at their eyes is enough.
I always thought this would happen between me and a guy named Philip but 40 years after we met I found out he died years ago...shit now I have to change it to...The Way We Weren't.
Robert Redford was one of the most handsome actors ever. But though Barbara Streisand isn't conventional beautiful, she has such presence and all together just somehow manages not to be outshone by him. They make an attractive couple. Even her real husband is gorgeous and she is the same next to him ☺️💃
Barbara was beautiful. Yes. I realized that one of my acquaintances looks like her. I never could pinpoint who she reminds me but now I I know she looks like young Barbara. She is short but athletic and attractive and she has face of Barabara!
I have seen this movie several times and when it came out. I have come to believe that he was bulldozed by her. She kept coercing him and many times he wanted to walk away. Perfect example is this scene. She guilted him into having dinner. Without the dinner she had nothing to offer him to want to hang out with her. Somehow 50 years later, I see this movie differently. I've lived it.
@@Redpilled-vv5lk Yesss! I remember this episode. "Your girl is lovely Hubble" I'd never seen the clip however, I never knew just how close her acting style was to Barbara's during the whole series.
I believe it was self inflicted. He was her project. She coerced him to stay for dinner when he wanted to leave. It wasnt about her ever. It was about what she did for him and that wont last.
Contrary to what some modern women think of Katie’s character in this movie,I think it’s delightful to see a woman totally unashamed to publicly display her desire for a man through her vulnerability and femininity. She spent her hard earned money on food and flowers then rushed home and let him know that with her is where he needed to be! When he asked her if she was sure, she immediately was shaking her head “Yes”! Real men love a woman mature enough to show how they feel about them (minus the opinions of girlfriends, sisters, moms and co workers). The women of yesteryear were onto something. They had that natural aphrodisiac for men. What happened????
The ending of this movie is so sad. When they hug, wow that was powerful.
I can never get tired of this movie, it still moves me no matter how many times I see it!!!

It was obvious his perfect ex would do just the same, was still crazy about him, just w/o the challenging him to be the best he could be....
You're right...it was obvious he didn't want a homely yenta, only except for the DECADE that he DID LOL...if anything, he knew he wasnt the man she hoped he would be, and who he really was would never be enough...for HER...
As his best friend said on the boat, after breaking up with boring ass but acceptably attractive slutty Carole Ann "its not like losing SOMEONE...its not like losing a Katie...now that would be a real loss..."
And, as much as it may have not been her ideal choice, and obviously broke her heart - after his liason and career choices, their breakup was a mutually agreed upon decision, as she too realized he would never hold up to her standards and always choose the easy way....
Pretty fades super fast if only skin deep...boooorrrinnng
She had the prettiest eyes. He had the perfect shade of blonde hair.
Redford was gorgeous in the seventies. In his prime. Attractive beautiful yet masculine man. Hard to find men like him these days.
@@m.e.d.7997 yes he had that combination.
Redford actually had reddish hair. He was never a blonde since he was a little boy. His hair is bleached here.
@@HolgerRuneFan right. His roots are very dark and if you look at photos of him early on, his hair was medium-dark brown. So I think the blond highlights here and also maybe he made his hair more red than blonde in certain films

Without Marvin Hamlisch lush music, the movie wouldn't have been as good.
Thanks that I got the chance to take a glimpse of this beautiful movie I was not born yet when this was shown
I don't care how beautifully in love they are!
I think that was the whole point of the movie - wouldn't you agree?
After seeing this movie in the 70s and recently, I don't believe he was ever in love with her. She was physically attracted to him, and saw him as a project. She was not his type and in this scene had no interest in her, just crashing at her house. The food kept him there. And with her strong personality, she kept pushing....he gave in, then left in the end.

Katie was the intellect and refused anything but perfection and that is what she saw in Hubble. Hubble warned her she didn't fit into his type of woman. @@EyeLean5280 you should have seen it way before. Geeze!!! It's a classic. Try watching it.
