    Screen legends Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford make movie magic as the captivating star-crossed lovers, Hubbell Gardiner and Katie Morosky. Theirs is a classic love story sparked by the attraction of opposites, played out against the backdrop of American life during times of foreign war, domestic prosperity and McCarthy-era paranoia in Hollywood.

    It is no wonder that I don’t go to or watch movies anymore. See “The Way We Were” and nothing else can stand in comparison. Ms. Streisand has never looked lovelier. Mr. Redford is inhumanly attractive yet seems suspicious of his handsomeness and allure. 50 years later and I am still discovering new layers of awareness.

    I first saw this movie many, many years ago and Robert Redford was absolutely one of the hottest, most handsome men of all time and Barbara was beautiful and so talented one of my fav singers. One thing about this movie if I'm remembering it right Redford's character was a naval officer, an 02 Lieutenant JG, but in the movie I don't remember him preforming any navy duties or as an officer ever aboard a ship. I'm thinking the naval uniform was just a prop because guys look really good in Naval or Marine Corps uniforms. Or maybe I'm misremembering and should look at the movie again, LMAO. 😊

      @@MrPolicekarim But at least with Al Pacino's character they did say that he was a war hero in WWII and or Korea depending on the time frame represented in the movie, and he was a captain of infantry, which means that he was probably an Infantry Company Commander and led men in combat so he saw the horrors of war, the blood, the death and all that. That fits in with why he was able to lead the family and also why he was so ruthless. But with Robert Redford's character they never even made reference to what he did in the navy

He’s embarrassed to be in this woman’s home, and when she puts on his jacket, he rolls his eyes ladies if you are ever in a room with a guy like this and you have a crush run. He will never give you what you need.
    -but God, RR acting in this scene is epic. He put in every nuance a man should have in this situation to perfection. I don’t think any other actor could’ve done it better I actually like to watch it over and over just to see his acting ability.

    Folks gotta check out the deleted scenes. They clarify so much. Yes, Katie realized there was no future for them. However, they were given an ultimatum by the studio. Kate was informed upon...Hubble had to divorce her or be blacklisted and never work in the film industry again.
    In the end, he's too weak for Katie and wants that easy come, easy go life. No question tho...he loved her. Just not for her.

    • @joanavitorino1436
      @joanavitorino1436 2 роки тому +24

      I disagree that he wants "that easy come, easy go life". He always sort of resented that, but of course played the part, all the while "observing" the others, as Katie says when commenting on this first book. But then he admits, after the war, that things are not so easy. What he can't get past, is that he sees how futile all the efforts are: he tells her in Washington that the communist jew who went to prison will work in Hollywood again for a McCarthist who informed on people, they will all work together, so why bothering fighting after all? Katie disagrees. He would rather put them, as people, but Katie cannot accept a person's value detached of their values and, consequently, the need to fight for them. Here lies the fundamental difference between them. His character is more... nuanced, I'd say. He never enjoyed the mocking as a student, for example, while the others laughed and made up crude jokes, but he knew fighting it would only make it worse... He's a pragmatist who's too pessimist to fight other than to observe. She's a pragmatist who's too optimistic not to fight and just observe.
