  • This is not a review of the Panasonic Lumix S9, but I just want to share my thoughts and reactions to the S9, specifically what I like about the S9, what I don't like about it, and what are just okay. The Lumix S9 is supposed to be a full frame mirrorless camera with compact size that is aimed more towards content creator and enthusiast photographer/filmmaker, with some emphasize towards easier connectivity, ability to create and use LUT in camera, and some other important features. I wish this camera will be released in Micro Four Thirds format with some upgrades, that will be the perfect camera!

    I think I mostly agree. However, when I looked at the technical specifications of the S9 and the GX9 (I have the latter camera as you know..) the thickness of the S9 and the GX9 are almost identical. Furthermore the S9 is about 2mm wider and about 2mm taller than the GX9. And I think few people would say that the GX9 is "big".... so the S9 is rather small...
    I think that with the S5ii and the G9ii having essentially the same external body, my guess is that Panasonic will put a new mft camera out within the year that is based on the S9 body. And if they do that then I would not be interested - my use cases with hybrid shooting - since it would lack an EVF, the grip is mostly non-existant and there is no hot shoe. Also the controls on the S9 look entirely to few for my tastes and photography flow. I would want about the same number of controls as on the G80/G85 with the addition of two programmable buttons on the front of the camera like the G9 has. I would program one button to switch between picture formats 16:9 or 1:1 or 4:3. The other would be an audio button like on the GH5ii which I do not have.
    That way, the beginner could work on the top and back buttons and learn the camera and then as the user advanced could program and start using the buttons in the front according to her/his wishes.
    HOWEVER the quicker time to upload and the Luts options make it tempting and incredibly modern.

    I'd rather they just make a updated GX85 same controls dials and buttons with pdaf, better Ibis, headphones/mic/ hdmi and the modern photo and video features... The s9 looks interesting... It just seems to be missing a lot of features, and is a very limiting as a all around camera. it needs more physical dials and buttons. I mean if you want easy that's what P or A mode on the control dial is for... This camera seems very niche, . I hope it's $$$ good for Panasonic but it's definitely not for me.

    I agree with your thought but I understand why Panasonic choose the full frame sensor: it's the perception of the bigger sensor the better on the targeted consumer that led the company to the decision on going full frame. Panasonic doesn't care about M43 anymore: the G9II is just a smaller sensor in a GH5 and nothing has been leaked about a possible GH6II.
    I expect, may be, an LX100 III further along the line as the D-LUX8 (Panaleica) has been announced by Leica.
    This being said, Panasonic (the holding) announced it will get rid of non productive branches: main culprits will be Air conditioning, TV and Home department, but we know Lumix is doing very badly, even below OM System that is on damage control since it was dropped by Olympus. I won't be surprised to hear Panasonic will get rid of Lumix entirely, may be selling it to Leica as an R&D and patent acquisition, which is not good. Leica doesn't care about M43, and will just keep L system alive. Under this light, the G9 is the last hope for Lumix: if it sells, may be Lumix wont die, and could be a bit more interesting for a possible new owner

    I get were Panasonic is coming from with with this, and I can also see why a lot of people particularly youtube reviewers are a bit confused about how to use it - a lot of people who are moving up from smart phones won't miss the view finder and don't want the bulk of prosumer cameras. the lens cap lens they released with it is weird, make it likely larger so you can get autofocus and aperture, but again the lack of aperture control is not something "upwardly mobile" content creators are going to notice as few (very very few) smartphones have adjustable apertures... or mechanical shutters and are controled almost 100% through touch interface so in many ways it's an easier transition from phone to the s9 than say, from the S5ii to the s9. .
    would I buy it? yeh, maybe I'd probably buy it once I had a couple of smaller short range L mount zooms, leave the S5II home travel with that (with MFT usually only travel with a couple of kit zooms and a couple of faster ultrawide and medium wide primes
    But what would I prefer for a travel camera? a new GX9 (MKII) with improved video capacity (even if "just" to the S9 capacity) swap the ports to the left and include a way of monitoring audio even if it's through USB C dongle or by bluetooth)
    And merge the GM5 and G100 line in to a super compact body -"bloging that almost disapears in to your hand like the GM's and the GF3 & 5 do, flip/tilt screen, audio in and out via a USBC dongle and/or built in bluetooth where port placement isn't important, have some improved video capacity (even a 10 or 15 minutes limit on 4K or open gate recording would be fine for travel "in the moment" short videos, and, some capacity to shoot, say, 5 minutes of 60 and 120fps FHD - 5 minutes at playback speed not of shooting time... one can dream but one also needs to be semi realistic) maybe even no IBIS and rely on lens and electronic stabilisation

    How many smartphone-weaned vloggers use an EVF, flash, or shoot long-form videos? If that's the target market, then I understand why Panasonic left those features out. But to choose a FF sensor is the head-scratcher. FF is overkill for most social media content, IMO. Heck, the average viewing time on Tiktok is 3 seconds!
    Panasonic probably chose FF over M43 because of the "bigger is better" bias; that at the same X100 price point, FF would be perceived as better value. Instead, their FF choice just raised the price and weight (with FF lens). M43 would've been the more sensible choice for this market, but Panasonic presumably wanted to one-up most compact cameras with its FF choice.

      Understood, I made the no EVF point because the S9 also don't have EVF. I do understand its importance for some people though, even I do use EVF too in some situations. Cheers 😁

    No view finder, only electronic shutter…no weather sealing. I‘m out of this.
    Like in other comments…i would like to see a upgraded GX8 (not a following gx9). It’s small enough, but not to small, lightweight enough…oh man, i love mine. The S9 is relatively slow on af in my opinion…but hey maybe it’s great for filming. I only will take fotos with mine…

      An updated GX8 sounds great too! I love mine, but the IBIS doesn't work for video, and it doesn't have proper 3.5mm mic jack(it does have 2.5mm but it's a bit of a hassle to use).

      @@Gary_W a GH6 in the small housing of the GX8 sound perfect to me personally…i travel a lot and edc my GX8 additionally with a 17mm Laowa prime. So i much prefer weather sealing and the compact size…but also like the tilting view finder.
      I guess the price will be over 1k, but there is a GX880 or GX80 for under 1000…

    The S9 definately does not do it for me....I needed the upgrade or continuation of the GX9...Panasonic and OM have basically stopped making compact pro level "rangefinder" style bodies...I have divested myself of all my M43 gear for now...but I will see what the future holds... The Sony A7c rocks for me right now. Cheers

      What you said is true, GX camera line needs to be updated with proper set of features.

      I fear lumix has abandoned the M43 photography market. I agree with Gary about an updated GX8/9. I’d buy what he is advocating. In the meantime I bought a used Sony A7C, the full frame equivalent of the GX8/9 update with a used 35/2.8.

    If there’s no EVF it’s certainly NOT aimed towards photographers. This is a video camera. No go for me.

    Lumix missed a big trick here. Nothing special on this camera they could have done a much better job of competing with a Fuji X100VI.

    Let me begin by stating that I do like your reviews. But, in this case, after hearing you explain negatives and features you don't care about, I don't understand why you would conclude that this is a step in the right direction. I do think it is, but for certain kinds of photographers that may not include you and me.

      @Gary_W  Місяць тому

      Perhaps I wasn't clear enough, sorry about that.
      What I meant to say is that this camera isn't a bad camera, there will be people that will be interested in the features of this camera, and by keeping the camera as small and lightweight as it can I think Panasonic is moving in the right direction(as opposed to some other camera makers who are now focusing only on larger pro level cameras).
      However, although I may be "qualified" to be in the market group for this camera from the manufacturer's perspective, I do think it's not for me personally as I require some other features that are missing in the S9.

    • @martingreenberg870
      @martingreenberg870 Місяць тому

      I don’t like the S9. The missing features make this a no go for a photographer. That is OK. This camera is clearly not marketed to me. I wish LUMIX well marketing this body to their content creator market. I want LUMIX to make money and continue to making cameras. Not only because I use LUMIX M43 gear but I also own stock in Panasonic.

    I disagree with the screen functionality: tilting screen is necessary for street-photography

    • @Gary_W
      @Gary_W  Місяць тому +2

      I agree to disagree, I personally prefer fully articulating screen for vertical shooting, but I get why many people prefer tilt only screen.

    • @martingreenberg870
      @martingreenberg870 Місяць тому

      I agree with you. I’m a street photographer and a fully articulating screen makes the camera more obvious. I only do video clips and I’m not the subject. Gary I too agree to disagree. We all agree that lumix should update the GX8/9. Especially the addition of an audio jac. I also disagree with you about the EVF. I definitely want to keep that feature. To save some money, LUMIX could loose the articulating EVF.
