Ok I think it is for travel photographer and videographer. Even vloger need more than 15 mins sometimes.
This prompted me to take another look at the Canon R8. It's $1200 now and looking even more appealing. No open gate or 4k from HDMI, but record limit is 2 hours or until it overheats (and they say it only does that in 4k60 or 4k50p) ... no crop in 4k60 and a heaphone jack (but no IBIS.) Did I mention it's $300 cheaper than this new Panny?
no 4K from HDMI? where did you get that? I own the R8 for almost a year and record pretty much all my videos with a capture card over hdmi, hdmi works up to 4k60, no problem.
As for overheating, in the studio i can use a pc fan at 5V and keep it going for hours and hours with no issues in 4k60. Without the fan it lasts like 40 minutes. in 4K30 it lasts a lot longer depending on the room temperature, maybe like 1-2hours, without airflow in the room and some heat it can even overheat in 4k30 in like 40-50min, this is all over hdmi, not recording on sd
Outside in the sun it can overheat in under 20 minutes though. 4K30 holds up much longer, usually it's fine in normal use case outside.
In my studio for long term talking head I generally just turn on my fan that is hooked up in a bracket in the cold shoe, very easy and convenient daily use solution
@@TheNitpicker from B&H in the R8 specs: "External Recording Modes
HDMI
1920 x 1080p at 50/59.94 fps "
@@buckwilde1511 well, that's just wrong. Of course it has 4K60, I don't know any current camera that can't hdmi output the same as it can record
I wish you got more into the ibis, because of their new electronic stabilization High, it almost looks like you're using a gimbal. I've tested it out using the S5iix, and it was impressive.
Honest and very thorough review!
I love my S9
The cameo you made on PetaPixel was hilarious.
Great review Matt. It was great meeting you in Osaka too 😁
He didnt feel the same
Great meeting you too Tom! 😁
?? So I have multiple S5 II for Professional Work… could I slap on one of my Atomos Ninja V for those moments I need a long form safety shot. So I can use this as a hybrid ?
@@moneyboys2010 I would still want to test and make sure it won’t overheat in the sun
How do you see the Lumix S9 vs the Sigma fp?
Hi Matt, nice video! One question about the recording limit: if you use an external monitor/recorder via hdmi, does it stop the hdmi video output after 15 min?
I’m wondering the same thing.
According to my search of the iPhone app store, the Lumix Lab app doesn't exist. If it appears, will it also work with other cameras like s5ii?
i've been doing research. The IBIS is awesome.. low key, if it has Angle Shutter, then there's less complications of calculating frame rates. also, since they can do both FF and APS-C and upload short form content (vertically) on social media, this camera is amazing! Is it compatible with the AI tracking with the RS3 ?
@13:50 One thing you can do if you have the DJI mic is plug in headphones into the receiver to monitor audio. 😉
overheating in 1080?
I upgraded from an 11 year old camera with one sd card to a Zf with one sd and one micro sd, and I don’t think I could ever go back (even if the two different card formats is weird). For backup copy or an emergency “extra” bit of storage when you need it, it’s a big mental relief.
Also, I checked the links in your education section, but couldn’t find the course you mentioned. Is it elsewhere?
Thanks for your review as iam considering this as a B cam for hybrid photo/video.
One thing that left me thinking... "this camera supports luts, like most cameras do" is it so? Can't recall any recent cameras that had a similar approach to luts like Lumix.
In my experience you have cameras like the Sony FX3 that let you load custom luts, but no camera manufacturer has taken it as far as Lumix
🔥Real time LUT ftw!
Which len best suit it?
Does it have clean HDMI out? Whats your take for a Ninja monitor or a ATEM mini ISO?
It has Clean HDMi and you can set whether to show the info or not
I appreciate the honest review. I’ve been debating whether to get the S9 or the S5iiX and question if the compromises are worth having a smaller form factor. The record limit definitely should’ve been 30 minutes instead of 10-15, like you said. I was really hoping there’d be a way to disable the record limit if the overheating could be remedied with an external fan. Oh well, I guess…
The drawbacks outweigh the price IMO. Better to get an S5 II with the fan and mechanical shutter.
Take the S5ii. You will not regret it.
@@JustAaronJoshua Thanks for your input. I’m definitely starting to lean in that direction, all things considered.
@@l-mount-forum9607 Its size makes me hesitant, more than anything. But I think I can live with it for the extra features.
Go the with S5ii, it’s a great camera and doesn’t cost much more.
R5C does that lol the lut feature just call CP custom profile
At £1500, same sensor as the S5 II/IIX, I would rather have a slight bigger camera with the built in fan and mechanical shutter.
Lol….
👀
Yeah if you want to use the S5ii/x for more then just being a UA-camr and want a professional work camera. The S5ii/x doesn't just cost 1500. If you have L mont lens that yeah the body is all you need. If not you gotta get l mount lens. Then camera cage and extra batteries. The cost will be closer to £2500k
Slightly bigger is an understatement
With the 3:2 20+mp sensor, it would be great for single camera television on a budget
Well I think it's a phantastic camera! Owning the s5ii it's impressive how they could implement most of the feautures into that small body!
They do what sony is doing since years! Great progress for Lumix.
I think this camera targets really well those travelinfluencers! not perfectly but I mean it's a really great capable camera for traveling and producing high quality video.
It is a huge waste of development money. Whomever heads project development in their FF section is clearly an imbecile.
Looks like the ultimate succesor to the GX85
*Only* 1500? That's not cheap! Sux for newbies as well as pros.
That's it! If this cam is for a newbie, $1500 is way over priced compared for what you can get on the market now and they don't have the limitations this camera has. "But they don't have open gate 6k", what NEWBIE is going to need open gate?!? The price is what makes this camera a no go for most people.
A newbie will spend 2k on the S5iix or 3k on a Sony camera. So they will spend 1500 on this camera If all they want to do is vlog with it and set up a UA-cam channel
I have no idea why they made a camera so limited when their own camera at almost the same price does the same image but without all the compromise. You could even get the BMCC 6k right now at almost the same price. If you are a beginner, I would not pick something so limited, def go with the S5II.
I believe its aimed more towards short film/ film makers that don't need long record times and may want bang for buck
@@CMCManor bang for buck? the s5ii is almost the same price...would you prefer this over the BMCC 6k if you were making any film? That is also currently the same price.
I cannot see a situation where anyone making a film would say "oh but could the camera just stop recording due to an arbitrary limit?" If you just said "there is an option on this camera for 300 where it will never overheat", who wouldn't take that option?
that "option" is the s5ii
I don't think their target market is going to use this for work at all.
@MaximoJoshua the camera is smaller than both. Look at the film the creator and what they shot on I believe its going for something simillair to that where they want a small camera that can be used for films that want to be light weight but can shoot really well
@@CMCManor they used the fx3 for that, the zv-e1 is smaller and lighter than the s9, and more importantly, more capable from a video perspective than the s9.
@@CMCManor not only that, the fx3 is only a tiny bit lighter than the s5ii and much heavier than the s9.
if someone were making a panasonic version of the creator, they would definitely be using the s5ii (you notice the creator didn't use the zv-e1 which would have been lighter, they were going for portability, but not at the expense of functionality)
Can it export prores raw like other full frame lumix cameras?
Only Lumix camera that does this the S5iix. This camera is a no a pro camera. It's a compact traveling camera for pics and vlogging. It's not for professional work
So you can have more luts than minutes to record video
it seems like this camera is more like aimed for vloggers and content creators I guess.. professional work is out...interview is out.. its more for those shooting themselves 5-10 mins to talk to the camera especially those who travel vlog
Yeah that's what it's for.
I guess I’m confused. B&H is showing no recording limit in the specs🤔
Adorama has the better spec list
I promise you it has one 😂
From an event coverage point of view I would have a second camera op (assuming the bride and groom are willing to pay for one of those) who is quick cropping and posting to social media and here’s the important part *** using the happy couples’ very own signature LUT in the same way they have a signature cocktail at the bar. Used that way (in the right markets) the camera could fully pay for itself in two or three weddings maybe one. There’s a unique feature set here which opens up some new possibilities. But you have to think a little differently.
I like the idea of a couple’s signature LUT
@@whoismatt And I kinda think we will see the Lab app integrated with the S5II bodies relatively soon, and then you can use the look on cameras capable of longer form filming as well. Lots of possibilities unfolding here I think.
A swing and a miss from Panasonic! So sad.
I wish it was m4/3 with no recording limits. The full frame glass is heavy and more expensive.
If they’re going for content creators, lighter setups would be so much smarter. Selfishly I could use our existing M4/3 glass as well.
With those things included, this would all the sudden be something I’d love to take camping and to send my team out with these little cameras.
As of now- no brainer no go.
At least 120 fps 4k with 30 minutes limitation and headphone jack... because the opponent is sony ZVe 1 which capable to do that. 15 is just... not for that price point.
And the lack of EVF ... The price will decrease soon and then it will be a small "fun" fullframe camera for... for who? 🤔🤔🤔
For volggers and people who don't want a professional cameras. If you do vidoes the EVF don't matter. How does one look through the EVF if they are sitting and talking to the camera
No headphone Jack is a problem. Cannot image why the miss this connector.
1:19 - What do you mean "giving it back whenever they ask for it"? Is this an open ended loan with no return date? Do you mean to say they could ask for it back when the mark II comes out in a few years?
Yes. For legal reasons they’re not allowed to give a product to a reviewer. So it’s a long term loan which will start losing value and then will eventually get to a point where it is worth nothing to the company and can be written off
@@bingbong4848 Why can't they give a product to a reviewer? Panasonic did this with the original S5 and many other companies do this too. DJI does this with their 4D and many lighting companies do this as well.
I want new GM1.
I would be very surprised if this camera would have overheating problems record 4K 8-bit. They should come up with a firmware update to allow more modes instead of lumping all 4K footage into one recording limit category. That would make this camera twice as versatile.
How about 1080p. does it have a time limit?
20 minutes, in 2024.
Just ridiculous
Im so upset, this was supposed to be my perfect match for a small gimbal.
@@martagalanoficial get a sigma FP
hopefully they will make the record limits optional with firmware updates
I believe everyone has missed what this camera is its not a videographer/production camera. its a camera for films movie production where you will be only filming for a few minutes at a time. Its essentially a really good camera for people who want to shoot short films and films but have a restriction on budgets i think this ia where thia cameta will come in. Like they have the lut button and up to 28 luts this is a movie camera 🎥 not a camera for anything else
Do the lumix s52
I was gonna buy the Panasonic S9 when I heard rumors about the release, then I saw all the youtubers "reviewing" the camera and I said: "no, thank you."
same especially with the record limits, I can accept the 6K, the 4K and FHD should be 30 and 60+ respectfully
Awesome
How exactly is this camera "affordable" when you can get a S5ii for cheaper with deals and such?
Not a good comparison considering most people getting this want something smaller than a s5ii
You are getting way less for basically the same price. While I agree that the bigger cameras may not be what you want, calling this an "affordable" camera just seems so weird to me when you miss out on some crucial features. It's a very individual decision. With it's recording limits the S9 would probably only be an expensive toy or leisure camera, not even a B cam for an interview. I personally don't want to spend comparatively much money on it. For 300-400 bucks cheaper? Maybe.
I was thinking the same. Its size isn't even an argument. Someone looking for something small for travel would probably go for a single-lens camera like a Fuji X100.
This is a Moms travel /TIKTOK camera. In this day and age no camera should have a recording limit or overheating issue , unfortunately Panasonic missing the mark and ends up a niche camera.
I think that’s exactly the market for it
TikTok is an Android/iOS video and music editing application on smartphone. It is nothing to do with the camera market
@@littleidols Maybe you did not understand what I typed in the first part , the type of person who will be buying it and who it is aimed at. Matt does
I've been wanting a camera like this for a while. 15 minutes is more than enough to take short clips when traveling. Goodbye S5 👋
For me as B camera it's perfect... Size matter for me when traveling or everyday photography...
I have lumix s5 & s1.... I rarely use the evf.. mostly use electronic shutter unless using flash or when shoot in flicker light environment and the camera will let me know about the flickering..so I'm aware.
I do 75% stills & 25% video... the time limit for is not an issue at all.
This camera is for me 😂...the one cons is the price.. it should be priced at 999$ or max at 1,200$
This camera should have been apsc sensor so no that much overheat and cheaper.
Even micro 4/3
15 min record limit is an utter joke. In 2024? It can't be excused.
S5ii you CANT disable the shutter dial.
15 minutes? Wow why?
Instant success (shipping all tuber to Japan), instant failure (compromise cam).as if no alternative.Soon may even has a leica version
11:34 I see Chris and Jordan. 😃 This camera is trash, but still enjoy your videos Matt. They should have just put a fan in it just like the S5II that's only $300 more that doesn't over heat. I understand they wanted to make an easy to use small camera but at this price doesn't make sense. Pros aren't buying it and consumers aren't spending $1,500 on a "fun" compact camera when they can use their phone.
Exactly!! To stripped down of basic functions (headphone jack, evf, mechanical shutter, flash) for any advanced amateur or pro and too expensive for beginners.
@@rleeshutter It's a poor attempt to market FF compact camera to appeal to Tik Tok/Instagram influencers.
Why not just get an OG S5? You lose the new AF and app but get all the cons of the S9 as a pro for the S5
What if you record to an external monitor like ninja onto the ssd? Unlimited recording hack
That would completely ruin the only thing this camera has going for it: its size. What's the point then?
15 mins recording limit! Jesus they never mentioned in presentation. i was hoping they come up with something like FX30 not going backward
I can't believe 10/15/20 minutes limits for 6K/4k/FHD... The Limies should be 15/30/60 and for 4K Lite should be 45min
nice!!
Besides the size or colors I think it's a lackluster device
No headphone jack and 15 min. time limit? Why did they even release this?
it’s mostly for travel photography
Well… the zve1 also overheats so I guess for the same reasons Sony had when releasing the zve1 😅
@@RICKYSERTValmost everyone who has done a review of the Sony zv e1 months later has said that the over heating issue was a little blown out of proportion can it happen yeah but most people aren’t filming 4K 120 fps for 55mins straight 😭
Crazy concept: not for you
@@RhianCampbell crazy concept: comment sections are for commenting.
The A7S3 came 3 or 4 years ago...and still all the new cameras got not more video specs (competitive AF, 240fps in 4k or a real gimble like stabilization). Instead plenty of features nobody asked for.
Buy the S5iix instead.
Get a Sony bro
Why do all that rambling and not even discuss 1080P?
Who uses 1080p in 2024?! 😜 It’s all about 6K open gate!
@whoismatt except when it's a sensor in a match box, but I digress. i appreciate your attitude about it all...
@@whoismatt 1080p is still relevant, even in 2024, for gaming content creators. If you're going to record yourself and your reactions, especially for a long time while playing a video game, you need a camera with unlimited recording limit and the option to record in 1080p as it's not too demanding on your camera. This is really important because it reduces the chance of the camera suddenly overheating in the middle of your gameplay. Recording in 1080p is also preferred if you don't want to end up with a really large file size at the end of the session. You could of course use a regular webcam to record yourself, but then you wouldn't be able to separate your facecam footage from your gameplay footage while editing.
If you're a professional why would you even have only 1 camera to do a job. I don't care for the time limit since I have 4 other cameras with no time limit
I'm a simple man, I see Chrono Cross, I upvote. Also you're right
I saw you steal that S9 from the PP boys.
Yup I got 2 now
*My Panasonic GH5S cost me less than this and is way higher spec in all but sensor size and 6K capability.* Why would I ever buy this with a record limit like this?
You can't put the GH5s in your pocket can you?🤔
@@thewalkingvloggingman7152 Yes, as a matter of fact, I can. Panasonic 14mm f/2.5.
But when Gerald points out negative things about Lumix, like that a camera is "strange," won't this review lead to you being banned by Panasonic? Using 'limited' is better than 'strange' in the title?! I lost respect for Panasonic when Gerald explained how they punished people for being truthful.
so let me get this straight it has no headphone jack so I can’t monitor my audio. It has a cold shoe so I cannot use the xlr adapter that Panasonic makes or any of my flash systems it has a time limit of 15 minutes and it’s $1500 no thanks.😢
Exactly why I say it doesn’t it the baseline. 😭 too many compromises
There are several fans now that can reduce overheating time. Now with a hard limit, this method does not work.
Bro the baseline is 4:2:2 chroma subsampling.
That thing advertises its 6k open gate feature but it can only do it in 4:2:0 😂
You’re only getting 10 minutes of 4:2:0 at that 😭
@@whoismatt crazy ahahha
At least minimum, 30 minute recording limit lol
Pass
Good price but that is $1,500 I can’t use to buy a more useful camera.
This camera should have been called Lumix s9d, d - disappointment
Recording limit in that S9 model...in 2024................. We Feel................ very Disappointed with Panasonic S9............ #getwellsoonpanasonic
The kit lens is a JOKE f25
vlogging is dead , its a camera for cool photography and for people shooting 20 second reels for social network.
It’s competing with x100v and zv1 but missed the mark in an epic way. Bad camera but at $1000 - $1250 with the lens I could see. But $1500 aint it
15 min recording...feels that we are back in 2011
Who’s turning up to shoot a wedding with a compact camera?😂
You would be surprised, I know many filmmakers that used a Sony a6500 or a6300 to film weddings. This is why I made this review, because for $1500 I knew some newer wedding filmmakers would be considering this camera.
I shot a wedding with a Panasonic G7.
Did you make a guest appearance in the petapixels video? ua-cam.com/video/xRULM5-qFA8/v-deo.html
👀😜
This is the most unbiased review of this camera for one of the sponsored UA-camrs who received one in Japan
If folks can use their so called smart phone for Ytube, then they can literally use anything.
„Q“ for Quality?? *lol
This camera is way too expensive for the fundamental faults it has. This should be 800 dollars with its lack of features. No headphone jack, hot shoe or EVF make it a joke at this price point. They could have made it the basically same size with these features if they want to charge that. This camera is a mistake in positioning. Its too too pricey for what it has. As I said for 700 to 800 for the body.. well That is a different story.
It's beyond comprehension: a camera that cannot be a real camera due to lack of a mechanical shutter: Night photos with dark bars (irrecoverable) and distortions of moving subjects because the electronic shutter is mediocre!! A video mode that overheats and limits (3 to 4) sequences of max 15 minutes with unpredictable cuts! A crude copy of film simulations that has nothing to do with the Art of Fujifilm. This Panasonic S9 is a disaster that will cause lasting damage to the brand. When will there be a version without diaphragm adjustment to align with smartphones? They should also remove the SD card connection and limit its use to the small internal memory like a ‘carbon pass’! No jack, obviously. We have pushed the limits of ridiculousness and the worst thing is that some people will buy it because there are different colors!!
tiktok or bust
This camera doesn't hit the base line for professionals, AND it doesn't hit the base line for amateurs or beginners. Why buy something for $1500 that you will grow out of rather quickly and then the $1500 you spent was just a waste.
To be honest, this is the best review of the camera that I've seen. Great job Matt
get that cash pay boi 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The 15 minute record limit kills this camera stone dead. No one will buy it for that reason alone.. This camera appears to have been designed by people who don't know the market, have just invented it with their own thoughts and haven't bothered to do proper market research. A major marketing mistake.
How can a company who have developed the ground breaking GH7 and S1H design this piece of crap ? Overpriced and Underspec'd.
Eh.....this seems like a pointless release.
What I like with the UA-cam Photo/Video community: “I will review a Toyota Camry as the Formula 1 driver”. The hilarious part is the Camera have not been presented as a Pro Camera, neither one for professional filmmakers or videographers. Obviously you can see this is not a camera targeting wedding filmmakers, but as I’m a wedding professional filmmaker, I’ll review my entry level Nissan Leaf as a professional F1 driver!
This is a very stupid take. This camera is very attractive to pro shooters on its face. A small, light full-frame with 6K and 4K60 4:2:2 10-bit? Sounds like a dream. Those features are useless to normies. Why include them with a short record limit?! Car analogies are useless here. This is more like a person who needs to pull trailers but also drive a lot of highway and the camera seems like a F-150 when it's really a 4-cylinder SUV.
I think this is their take on the digital camera.
Panasonic is now at the lowest in the film/photography business. smh. What Is this nonesense
Mommy and daddy
My sweet little Son
This camera stinks
The S9 is not for pro filmmakers far from it. It's for volggers and people who just want a good holiday camera they can vlog with or do talking head shots. Don't buy into any influencer who pitches this camera as a pro camera they are simply selling the product as they got the camera for free.
People crying about a travel cam and everyday photo camera not being able to record for 1 hour lol grow up
Panasonic suk
