Micro Four Thirds Pancake Lenses Explained (Panasonic Lumix)

- Today I am sharing my thoughts and experience of some of Micro Four Thirds pancake lenses, especially from Panasonic Lumix. These small lenses are really the embodiment of the original Micro Four Thirds philosophy; they are small, lightweight, budget friendly, but offer great image quality. These lenses work well on all sorts of different kind of photography genres, from travel photography, portrait, street photography, landscape, and scenery photography. Hopefully by watching this video you can learn more about these lenses.

I am using the 42.5 f/1.7 for portraits which is an excellent lens for portraits and close-ups. It is not a pancake lens but it is very lightweight and has a good stabilisation!
Thanks for sharing! Yes, the 42.5mm sounds like a good lens, I have the Oly 45mm f1.8, which is very similar but lacks stabilizer.
I'm planning on buying the Lumix gx80 with the 12-32 pancake to have a compact travel camera. I value the small size a lot so I was wondering if something like a Sony rx100iii iv or v (similar price, 1" sensor) would be better fitting. Considering it's more compact but potentially "worse". Thank you
I think that's an excellent choice.
Pair it with a 20mm f/1.7 as well and I'd say it wins hands down. With just the kit zoom, the Sony starts to make more sense imo.
Those compact Sony RX cameras is definitely more convenient and can take good pictures, but I still prefer the images taken using Micro 4/3 cameras. It also depends on what lens you are using on your M4/3 camera.
Gary, do you have suggestion regarding cheap mft portrait lens with super bokeh that can separate the subject from the background?
Olympus 45mm f1.8 or Lumix 42.5mm f1.7. They are not that expensive, but they are really awesome for portrait. Bokeh is definitely very easy to produce with either one of those lenses.
Try to avoid olympus 14-42 ez, since the ribbon is known to fail.
Yep, just like my Oly 9-18mm, the ribbon cable on that lens also failed.
I only own M.Zuiko 17mm f2.8. I like that lens and it's focal length. It may have some flare issues. Nothing else to complain about. The lens is little bit expensive, about 300 euros/dollars. For some reason I got my lens for 120 or so ten years ago. Never seen it that cheap anywhere else. I was lucky.

I wish we had more pancakes to choose from. I had the 14-42 ez lens but switched to 12-32mm as I can't stand the auto zoom. The 20mm I can't stand the focusing. 17mm like you said is either too wide or too close. I'm nitpicky lol. I have the sigma 19mm f2.8 coming in the mail, hopefully it's the best prime in the range for me but not a pancake :/
