My 9 month, border collie mix, could pass everything but calmly being pet. He'll sit/stay, but it's all over once the petting is initiated. He gets so excited, he'll try to push into people and then roll over. Anyone who comes down to his level, he jumps/climbs on. I've never had a pup like people so much.

Hi. Thank you so very much for this informational and educational piece. I will continue to follow you. I plan to be a dog trainer but I want to make sure I cover all the basis and your videos are covering the areas I have questions on. I grew up with a dog and had a family dog in the past. Hi Nate, I have trained many classes preparing them to AKC-CGC and I think highly of your class. You are lucky to have such obedient dogs to train. Believe me not all classes loook like yours..
Awesome thank you for the refresh for me, I have taken one dog through the good citizen training, she was easy, I’m going to have my work cut out for me with Cookie, she is very fearful still. I’m sure because I have been going very slow with her because of fearfulness. I hope this is not going to hinder her. I’m trying not to scare her so much . She is doing better with the leash training , except when she does get scared she fights to run back to a safe spot or to hide. 😢 I just stand still till she calms and then we go quietly back to her safe spot. I can get her to go on leash to go potty to back yard. If the outside ac fan comes on she will just look now and still does her business 😊, but when she is done she will start to run back to the door. I have to stop, and when she calms we start back to the door. She is doing well with that. If the grass is wet we stop inside the door and I dry her feet and I take her leash off and release her with break command and she goes back to her spot. She’s doing a lot better. It’s taken a week with this and she is growing so tall now. She is a labradoodle /Shepard mix and she is going to be a tall medium dog😮 black with white markings , also her coat looks like she has a white frosting , very unique than I have seen .😊
Amazing video. I am getting my puppy CGSD in 3 weeks or so, now trying to get as much information as I can, came across this channel, the training makes sooo much sense! Thank you
Thank you for this video as I am a dog training as well it’s always a pleasure to watch and learn from you and see just how much we both have the same training style. Love all of your videos!! 🐾
I appreciate your information. I really appreciate your advice to not stress the dog. I think you are spot on with your training and recommendations! Carry on the good work!
my dog has the opposite problem from the fearful dog... she LOVES people and she can't contain her excitement. We failed the CGC test... very badly... but we're working on it for a second try!
In terms of the last exercise you could use an E-Collar if you really want I wouldn’t do it unless I was really having problems but use negative reinforcement with the E-collar to get the dog back into the down/sit
This is such a great video. I truly appreciate your work. Thank you! Can a fearful and aggressive k9 conquer these test over time and practice? Can you share a video how you would deal with a anxious/fearful k9.
Thanks for this! I have to get my girl practicing polite meet and greets in the real world. She is FINE in class, but real world, she is soooo excited to visit neighbors. Sort of defeats the purpose of being able to pass the CGC in a room for evaluation.
Another way I once trained a dog to alarm bark. I walked past the fence and had the dog be quiet. Once I touched the fence; I said bark. Thus, letting the dog know that walking by was okay. Approaching or touching the fence gave the dog permission to bark. Having two mutts is a little more difficult.
Hi Nate, I watched lesson 7 on confidence & wrote you a comment. One of the things that I mentioned in my comment was that my dog will become aTherapy Dog, once I get her & she advances in training. This vedio helped me a lot because some of the tests for my dog to receive the certification as a therapy dog you covered in thus vecio! 😎However, I still have the question about rewarding my dog without treats. I am a bit nervous about that since the ministry which will be profoming the test will not offer a pass score if they know/can tell that your dog has been treated by a reward concept. Luckily I have time to figure this out! Hopefully this pandemic will end SOON! I can't wait to get my GSD [mine will be a puppy] Another excellent vedio! I have learned a lot from you & am considering receiving training lessons with you via zoom. I am not sure if doing it tith way would be satisfying for me through, I like personal contact. Take care, Michele
Thanks! Yes, here is the response I wrote to your other questions "I don't have a video on therapy dog training, but you can learn how to train a therapy dog by going through my basic and advanced obedience series in order. I would also suggest training with treats as a reward. They can't watch you while you train, they can only test the training. No dog testing that I'm aware of allows rewards or corrections during the test. Just because you train with treats, doesn't mean your dog will always need treats or toys to perform. This is also why we use all four quadrants of operant conditioning. Check out this video to learn how to cut back on rewards: ua-cam.com/video/a2OBoptftYs/v-deo.html "
Hi, just bought your book as I am waiting for my malinois puppy. Have a cat who grew up with my previous dog, a dutch shepherd. Would like to see a video on how to introduce a new pup (working dog breed) to the house cat and build up a loving relationship between them. Have had a pitbull and a dutch shepherd who had a affectionate relationship with the cat. Thanks, really like your videos.
Was watching this and thinking, "I think my dog could pass this." Then came the last exercise and, oh boyyyyyy would my dog not have that! Guess it's time to do some gradually-increasing "walk away" exercises. XD Thanks again for another well-explained, helpful video!
I was thinking the same with my pup! She's polite with her humans around, but leaving for three minutes would probably cause some screaming at this stage!
Hey Nate! I am interested in moving more into AKC cgc and obedience work . I notice that the guy on the left with the Mal has a E Collar which they dont allow for obedience tests ( not sure about for CGC) can you give some info on how he will be able to test without the e collar ? I am all for e collar use where appropriate so it's not a hatred for e collars, and I am very much broadening my handling skills at this time. Love your channel and just became a member to engage and learn more
Thanks for becoming a channel member and supporting my work. Also, I apologize for the delayed response, as I took a few weeks off for the holidays. He's using the e-collar for training, but he won't be able to use it during any testing. This applies to the CGC and all other test requirements he has to complete at the school. Additionally, during testing, he's not allowed to use treats to reward the dog.
Do you advise this path for dogs that have high drive or are very rambunctious ? I have a 8 month old golden that needs something to capture his focus where other things aren’t when he captures scent or something interests him his all systems go
Hi Nate, Thanks for your videos they are so inspiring. I've been farming UA-cam about dog training videos, not only in English (I'm not native in English) and, imho you are, by far, the best. Everything you explain is just so clear with the logic that is behind your tips that helps to really understand and memorize. And there is also your consistency between what you say, what you do whatever the exercice or the training is. Your are amazing and so helpful. I have a question, that is not directly linked to this video can I put it here or is there a better way to ask?

I like to use three commands for heel. Keep in mind, you can use whatever words you like, as long as you're consistent. Heel - Focus heel With me - Walk next to me in heel position, but eye contact is not required. Let's go - Walk anywhere around me as long as there is no pulling on the leash. Cheers! THank you so much Nate! What state do you train in? I am in AZ and a basic dog trainer for a local pet supply store. However, my goal is to take my training skills to a very high level. I appreciate your training methods and style in addition to you’re being an excellent communicator and instructor. Do you have availability to train trainers?
Hi Ahmad! If I'm going to use correction (positive punishment) on a dog I'm training, I'll use either a martingale collar, prong collar, or a remote training collar. Just depends on the dogs correction level and if I'm training them to be off-leash trained or not. :)
These are students at the Tom Rose School and they are allowed to use any dog training tools. I personally don't add corrections in training until the puppy is around 5 months of age, but ideally I start them on corrections between 7-9 months of age. Most of the students only have the puppies wear them, so they are comfortable with the collars on, and only use it to correct dangerous or destructive behaviors. Thanks for watching and commenting! :)
Nate, I know most CGC tests won't have fireworks - that's just wrong, but what should the students have done - rather than correct which instills the fact that the dog was correct for being afraid. Also, in a class situation, I have one student whose dog will do helicopters at just the site of another dog and forget it if the dog is too close. Only 3 people/dogs in the class. Going to try ring gates so each dog has their own section to work, any other suggestions? The owner is using treats and even a clicker already. She also uses the gentle leader as the dog is a large Husky/Australian shepherd mix and the owner is in her 70s, but has done freestyle and obedience trials with other Huskies in the past. Have tried distracting and even removal or at least out of site until the dog is calm before coming back in to the class where all the fun is.
It’s our first night with our 2 month old pup. It’s 3AM and she gotta go potty I think. She found the place where she supposed to go on her own in the morning but should I go downstairs and direct her? I didn’t use crate. just used an area where she can drink, sleep and reach the potty place. Gave her a chew toy too. What should I do? I’m a first time owner
When I pet someone's dog I always pet from the side, not on top of the head because reaching over top is threatening to a dog. It seams all CGC training and testing shows reaching over top. When someone wants to greet my dog, I ask them to pet from the side.

Because they think that it teaches the dog to look at their face. I personally think it’s a silly practice that is unnecessary. If we teach the dog that looking at our face predicts the marker, and the marker predicts the reward, then it doesn’t matter if you hand it to them by your side or a direct line from your face. Since they have to look at your face to cause the marker to happen. Check out my video on getting more focus from your dog to see what I mean. Cheers!
Can I ask why the prongs are so low? Also, why on such young puppies? Shouldn’t the puppies be on something as simple as a slip? I understand they will need correcting, but I was taught a puppy shouldn’t be introduced to a prong until at least 7-8 months of age. I feel a slip lead would be just as affective in such young dogs.

Ummm... can i ask you something...i've been following all your wonderful things to train dogs but, my dog is so playful. What should i do? By the way my dog is a full breed husky.
@@pickleb4tt Normally with puppies its a little more patience and repetitions. Plus shorter training sessions. Depending on their attention span. Try to use meal time as training time too.
Playing fetch or a walk. Something that will tire then out just a bit before training sessions can help with being so playfully and having so much energy.
@@pickleb4tt the main thing is a lot of patience and repitions. Like Nate said, training should be fun for the dogs too. Try one or 2 skills first. And then building upon that.
Did you try the jar full of coins? Normally dogs don't like loud noises. So if it associates the loud noise every time it bites, it will not do it anymore.
I personally use the pet corrector. All it is a can with compressed air. It's the same idea as the jar of coins. It makes a loud noise. And then the dog will eventually make the connection that they should not bite you. And if they do, then they will get a correction. Main thing is that you use your verbal correction (like the word no) before your physical correction (which is the sound of the air from the can).
if you're correcting your dog and the behavior is not going away, then that means the correction is not high enough or your timing is off and the dogs is getting confused on why he is being corrected. If you need more help, I do offer zoom training sessions. www.nateschoemer.com/services

Actually, as a skeptical mal owner myself (that’s a better term than “fear”), I do not agree with getting low and in their face. Don’t force it. If a dog is iffy on people approaching, let them go on their terms and sniff the person. One step at a time. Then work up to what the first guy did. But one of the worst things is getting low and looking them straight in the eyes.
So... im only a few minutes in and im noticing that treats are going from pouch, to what seems like the owners mouth before finding its way to the dog...? Anyone else seeing this?
Yes, they do that because they believe that it'll help teach the dog to look at the handlers face. However, I don't believe that is necessary if you understand and use markers correctly. :)
I just did this with my SDiT, Shasta. Our trainer uses the CGC to test his "Advanced Obedience" students. I'm proud to say Shasta passed, but she gave me a heart attack with "Leave It" and distractions. She LOVES food chews, and she almost failed when our trainer threw a rawhide ring on the floor! Shasta grabbed it, but then immediately gave it to me! Our trainer passed her for her prompt response.
Very good video, BUT, the biggest problem I face is finding people to help me do any of this. Meeting people is a huge problem because they violate all your boundaries and rules, leading you to over correct your dog. My dog is not fearful or aggressive, but she gets excited meeting people, then people egg her on by talking and acting in an excited way. This leads to her jumping up and sometimes even peeing. I've gotten so sick of this that I don't let anyone pet her anymore, which of course, makes people mad. It's also an area that I simple can't get trained, when in every other way my dog is trained and awesome.
Teach her leash pressure and then use that to reinforce expectations. You can add positive punishment for reliability one the dog knows the rules. ua-cam.com/video/QSxy_EIYyoQ/v-deo.html
You talk a lot about fearful or aggressive. But what about excited? Like very excited. With me she can be calm and slow down. But with anyone else she's a nut! Jumping and wiggling. How is everyone's dog sitting so nicely? 😭 please. My puppy is so chaotic.
Just because they’re on doesn’t mean they’re being harshly used..better to have a tool available and not use it than needing it and not having it..plus, getting them used to knowing how to “turn off” the pressure sets them up well for life and getting used to different collars..
I wish I’d started putting the prong collar on loosely to my GS puppy earlier..he needs it now (22-23 weeks) as he’s a big time “puller” on the leash, and simply won’t listen at all to obedience commands outside my house..there’s nothing more disheartening than when you get to a private lesson and your dog acts like you’ve never done any training despite having done training at every..single..meal..and..more.. He’s great when we train..place, sit, down, shake, touch, fetch (bring), rudimentary heel, center, flip and by, but we get to the training place and all the smells just freak him out attention-wise…@@co8008

Awesome! Thanks for sharing and I'm happy you're seeing progress with Cookie. :)
Such a lovely puppies!! And well done to their humans!! 👏👏👏 Would you film a video with older/teenage dogs? Rescue dogs or more fearful dogs?
Thanks and yes! :)
👍👍👍🙂
Amazing video. I am getting my puppy CGSD in 3 weeks or so, now trying to get as much information as I can, came across this channel, the training makes sooo much sense!
Thank you
Thank you for this video as I am a dog training as well it’s always a pleasure to watch and learn from you and see just how much we both have the same training style. Love all of your videos!! 🐾
This is Awesome!!! So jealous you guys have so many cool places to train and learn. As always great video 👏👏👏
Thanks, G K! :)
This is gold 🎉❤ i’m currently in the classes to become a dog trainer and i’m learning SO MUCH stuff from your videos! Cheers from Poland 🙂
This is totally useful!! Thank you for sharing❤️
I appreciate your information. I really appreciate your advice to not stress the dog. I think you are spot on with your training and recommendations! Carry on the good work!
Again. Timing is everything.
Rio and I are getting ready to get her cgc.
Awesome! Thanks for watching, Kevin!
my dog has the opposite problem from the fearful dog... she LOVES people and she can't contain her excitement. We failed the CGC test... very badly... but we're working on it for a second try!
In terms of the last exercise you could use an E-Collar if you really want I wouldn’t do it unless I was really having problems but use negative reinforcement with the E-collar to get the dog back into the down/sit
Thanks for sharing! :)
Thanks and yes, that's why we train in multiple environments to make sure the dog is generalized to the training.
Thanks Nate, you inspired me to get my dog passed the test.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing and I'm happy the video helped. :)
Awesome! Nice work.
Video of the year thank you
Thank you, Betty! I really appreciate that! :)
i just leant a lot. thanks for sharing your training. ❤️❤️❤️🙏
That black and white one at 4mins is so engaged, cute
Hi, just bought your book as I am waiting for my malinois puppy. Have a cat who grew up with my previous dog, a dutch shepherd. Would like to see a video on how to introduce a new pup (working dog breed) to the house cat and build up a loving relationship between them. Have had a pitbull and a dutch shepherd who had a affectionate relationship with the cat. Thanks, really like your videos.
Thanks, I really appreciate that and the video suggestion! :)
Your videos are awesome bro and they help me massively. All the best mate God bless
Thanks and I'm happy they're helpful. Thanks for watching and supporting.
Love the fundamentals and reminders to focus on dog not evaluator.
Thanks! :)
Was watching this and thinking, "I think my dog could pass this." Then came the last exercise and, oh boyyyyyy would my dog not have that! Guess it's time to do some gradually-increasing "walk away" exercises. XD
Thanks again for another well-explained, helpful video!
Thank you, Rachael! :)
I was thinking the same with my pup! She's polite with her humans around, but leaving for three minutes would probably cause some screaming at this stage!
Freaking excellent video. I highly appreciate it and cant wait for my belgian to be like the ones in your video
Thanks, I appreciate that! Cheers!
Big fan of your content, everything is always broken down so nicely. I couldn't find an answer, what's with the half-chokes on puppies?
Nate that was awesome loved it thank you so much for this video
Thanks, Chris! :)
The guy with the aussie shepherd needs to bring his treat down lower. He's accidentally teaching the puppy to rear up.
Thank you for this.
Awesome! Thank you! :)
I have a 8 month old golden that needs something to capture his focus where other things aren’t when he captures scent or something interests him his all systems go
This was fun! 🐕
Thanks, I really appreciate it. You can send me questions through my Patreon. www.patreon.com/NateSchoemer

@@NateSchoemer - For your book, until yesterday (I think), it was not yet available in Amazon in Europe, so ordering from US was making the price double due to taxes and shipping fees. But, good news for all your fans in Europe, it is now available on Amazon.fr (www.amazon.fr/Nate-Schoemers-Dog-Training-Manual-ebook/dp/B07XRJJPQC).
It might be a good idea to give that link too for European people. :)
Hello! I am wondering what 3 different commands you use for walking on leash/heeling/focused heeling?! 😊
For the TRS u mentioned in previous videos that u gotta take to dogs through the program. Do u take ur own dogs, the company dogs, or clients dogs??? Through the program
You take your own dogs through the program. :)
What are those different commands for the focused heel, heel and the last one
I like to use three commands for heel. Keep in mind, you can use whatever words you like, as long as you're consistent.
Heel - Focus heel
With me - Walk next to me in heel position, but eye contact is not required.

Hello Nate,
What do you think about a prong collar for training and correction ?
Hi Ahmad! If I'm going to use correction (positive punishment) on a dog I'm training, I'll use either a martingale collar, prong collar, or a remote training collar. Just depends on the dogs correction level and if I'm training them to be off-leash trained or not. :)
Perfection! Thank you
Thanks! :)
I wish 🙏 I could see how to prepare for the Urban CGC Test.
Nice and educative. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
I could see that some use the ecollar is good to use it at that age?
I would try to get the dog desensitized to other dogs. Here's an option, just jump to 45:25 in this video: ua-cam.com/video/3lBJFcWiAzk/v-deo.html
Absolutely love the video. Pretty cool dogs.
Thanks Roshan, I am glad you liked the video :) Thank you for supporting the channel!

Awesome, thank you
It’s our first night with our 2 month old pup.

During the CGC test, are dogs allowed to use an ecollar?
When I pet someone's dog I always pet from the side, not on top of the head because reaching over top is threatening to a dog. It seams all CGC training and testing shows reaching over top. When someone wants to greet my dog, I ask them to pet from the side.
What kinds of dogs are the two dark German Shepherd/Malinois type looking ones in the class? Are they littermates?
What is the difference between the CGC and Virtual Home Manners? My corso has the CGC so I'm wondering if we should do this as it's very similar.
Virtual Home Manners is natural lead-in for AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy and Canine Good Citizen (CGC) in-person training. Source: www.akc.org/products-services/training-programs/canine-good-citizen/akc-family-dog-program/virtual-home-manners/
@@NateSchoemer ok, thanks. Than we'll skip it as we already did the higher level. Thanks!
can you put the link for your training class and the CGC testing (if there is a link). it would really help me a lot
Is there a particular reason they blow on the reward before giving it to the dog?
I prefer to not have other people feed treats or handle dog. Ty for all the informative technics you displayed in video.
one thing I noticed with most training videos, why do the handlers put the treat by their mouth before rewarding?

How old is your husky?
@@bdogg20101 it's 12 weeks
@@pickleb4tt Normally with puppies its a little more patience and repetitions. Plus shorter training sessions. Depending on their attention span. Try to use meal time as training time too.
Playing fetch or a walk. Something that will tire then out just a bit before training sessions can help with being so playfully and having so much energy.
@@pickleb4tt the main thing is a lot of patience and repitions. Like Nate said, training should be fun for the dogs too. Try one or 2 skills first. And then building upon that.
Awsome video.
Can you please make a video on how to teach my dog to shake my hand?
What Ivan said. :)

Awesome video but would have been better if you could consider using bicycle , wheelchair ( electric and manual) for distraction
What kind of treat ?

Nate my pup keeps biting me and i tried that one video you had how to stop it but it’s not working. I need help lol

I'm impressed given that those are puppies. I'm assuming they are litter mates since they seem to be all Malinois.
I miss my malinois! he was my soul matej!
So the same as horse desensitization, even the fireworks for police work. This was good to watch.
I disagree with horses and desensitization. I want my horses to be alert but listening. However I do acknowledge it's the word I have a problem with.
I see everyone has a choke color on, it's a effective equipment right

I like dogs
I want to training her more just like you because i got my dog pomeranian 😳😵
I just did this with my SDiT, Shasta. Our trainer uses the CGC to test his "Advanced Obedience" students. I'm proud to say Shasta passed, but she gave me a heart attack with "Leave It" and distractions. She LOVES food chews, and she almost failed when our trainer threw a rawhide ring on the floor! Shasta grabbed it, but then immediately gave it to me! Our trainer passed her for her prompt response.
Congrats and nice work!
So what do I do if my dog LOVES EVERYONE? She jumps up on everyone and is so happy to see everyone to the point its hard to stop her
Teach her leash pressure and then use that to reinforce expectations. You can add positive punishment for reliability one the dog knows the rules. ua-cam.com/video/QSxy_EIYyoQ/v-deo.html

Mine will fail the " meeting a dog"
He always wants to sniff the butts ..but over all very friendly
You talk a lot about fearful or aggressive. But what about excited? Like very excited. With me she can be calm and slow down. But with anyone else she's a nut! Jumping and wiggling. How is everyone's dog sitting so nicely? 😭 please. My puppy is so chaotic.
How do these people teach their dogs to just sit and stare at them? My beagle would never
Kinda crazy to see pinch collars on such young puppies.
Helpful video though.
Just because they’re on doesn’t mean they’re being harshly used..better to have a tool available and not use it than needing it and not having it..plus, getting them used to knowing how to “turn off” the pressure sets them up well for life and getting used to different collars..
Oh okay, that's a good point. Yeah if it's just to introduce the puppy to the collar and how it works that makes sense.
