    Following several trainers last few months because I got my first pup. You and one more trainer are the only ones that teach basic marker communication. She's six months old, a croatian shepherd mix and knows well over 15 comands and she's a very well behaved pup. It all started with your channel and training videos. Thank you Nate!! 😁

    Hi Nate, a little confused over “Yes” and “Free”. I thought “Yes” was the marker word and “Free” was the release word? During a part of this video it seemed like you used the “Free” as a marker, as you didn’t move away from the dog and the dog remained in the command position. Can you explain that a little further.

    Hey Nate, I bought a purebred German Shepard from a breeder. He’s 10 weeks old I named him Zeus. He knows how to sit command but not his name which I’m okay with. I’m having a tough time with the puppy biting. Zeus doesn’t bite to hurt it’s playful but his teeth are so sharp!
    First tried redirecting… then I tried hands on with skin around his neck with redirection. Never to hurt him but to try and let him know it hurts. I say no and squeeze the extra skin while he’s actually biting me. He still bites me. I’ve heard yelling loudly would work. I don’t want him to be afraid of me or vice Vera.
    I just want to say thank you for the advice you give and you are lucky to be doing what you love for a living. You’ve helped so many people! This is actually my first dog. I’m determined to raise him right and I’d like to know if there’s one video on your channel that I can learn the most on which would it be. Thanks again! 🙏

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  2 роки тому +1

      Sorry for the late response. Have you been able to get the biting under control? As you already know, everything our dogs do is based on motivation. This means his motivation to play bite overrides his motivation to prevent the correction. This can mean that the timing of the correction is off, and he's not making the connection. It can also mean that the correction is not high enough for him.
      The one video on my channel that you can learn the most on would be this one: ua-cam.com/video/XQRgci18tvY/v-deo.html
      Cheers!

    I love your videos Nate!! Can you please make a detailed video on how to deliver treat. As in how should the food be held.. My gsd gets super excited and takes food very roughly from our hand. I am not sure how to teach him to take food gently. Because of his this behaviour its very difficult to train without sacrificing my fingers 😔
    Once i trying to lure him into sit from lay down position by keeping food in my hand and he almost grabbed my hand.
    FYI he has never actually hurt me.. Just minor scratches once or twice.. But being a 1st time dog owner i am not sure how to make him take food gently.

    Tomororw is adoption Day for my first dog, and I’ve been watching your videos - I am trying to remember all that I’ve learned and where to start :) but real quick- an entry level question for my first day: I understand to say yes then treat. But what’s the difference in saying FREE (when do I say free vs yes?) Can I buy your materials too so it’s all in order for easy reference ?

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  Рік тому +1

      Here's a short section from my dog training manual:
      Firstly, there are the two positive types of markers: The first one is the continuation marker (I like to use the word “yes”). This is a word or sound that lets the dog know that they are correct and will be delivered a reward. It’s called a continuation marker because unlike the terminal marker, it doesn’t release the dog. Meaning, if your dog is in a command stay, you can use this marker without releasing the dog from the stay.
      However, if your dog is not in a command stay, then this marker just means they’ll be rewarded. Therefore, this often confuses people because of the terminology “continuation”. This is why it’s easier to understand by what it predicts: A continuation marker predicts a reward. That’s it. It doesn’t change the circumstances, so if the dog is in a stay, they remain in the stay, and if the dog is not in a stay, then they remain free from the stay.
      In contrast, we have the terminal markers (I like to use the word “free”). These release dogs from commanded positions as well as guaranteeing a reward. Ex.: If a dog was in a sitting position and you use your terminal marker, they are released from that position and will be given a reward (indicating the sit behavior is finished).
      I hope that helps. Cheers!

    Hi Nate!
    My pup is now 9-10 months. He is kinda afraid of his place because it is elevated he doesn't like to put his rear legs there, so only he places his front paws and stretches himself as far as he can to get food or treats, and if it's too far he gives up.
    What do you suggest to encourage him?

  • @eq3896

    Nate, I have a question about fear/anxiety in my dog. He had started showing a lot of signs of being incredibly fearful when he was around 4-5 months, and although we’ve definitely made a lot of progress he’s still incredibly anxious of many things. I had started counter conditioning with him, butI was wondering how you manage when a dog is over threshold. Usually I can do a good job at avoiding situations that would put him over threshold, however in my neighborhood I can’t always guarantee he won’t be around something that triggers him. How can I take him back under threshold, and what’s the best way to help when triggers get stacked?

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  2 роки тому +1

      If I'm in a situation like that, I just calmly walk away from the trigger and, if needed, use leash pressure to control the dog. In addition, If I can replicate the trigger in a controlled environment, then I'll do that next. For example, If the dog becomes reactive because of a skateboarder, then I would get a skateboard and use counterconditioning and desensitization to get the pup over that fear. I hope this helps. Cheers!

    Vey good video as always!
    I have a question about some earlier videos.
    I watched both An Introduction to Dog Fear and Aggression. and How To Stop Most Behavioral And Obedience Dog Training Issues but I'm still baffled.
    My 2,5 years old corgi used to like children. Suddenly when he turned 1 he started to growl at them. When a child comes to our house we goes bezerk. I have to keep the dog in another room the whole stay. My younger corgi, 1 year old is ok, still puppybites a little though.
    Should I try to teach the older one by slowly going nearer and nearer a kindergarden (kids are behind a fence) or how could I fix this?

    • @NateSchoemer
