There's a thing Pink Floyd does, and which a lot of bands did in the 1970s and 1980s, is they gave you *layers.* They gave you *depth of sound.* And it's really all about the technology. Modern music is almost all digital. It's highly produced, quantized, time-shifted, sequenced, looped, sampled, and digitally edited. The volume of the track is normalized and EQ adjusted so nothing is allowed to be *quiet* any more. There's no more stuff in the background to catch your ear, because it's all in the foreground. It's all designed to sound good with subwoofers and ear buds and highly specialized sound equipment. But the guys in the 1970s and early 1980s, what they had was *tape.* They had multi-track tape, each track with its own level, and the engineers had to fiddle with it manually until it sounded good. And sometimes they had to bounce all 8 tracks, or all 16 tracks, down to 2-track stereo so they could fit more crap in. And it all had to work and play nice together, because there were no digital do-overs. So what you got was stuff happening way in the back, instruments doubled, twin guitars, overdubbed vocals, and this rich and lovely tapestry of sound. And nobody did it like Pink Floyd.
Waters and Gilmour were certainly talented producers, but their decision to self-produce their music often proved problematic. Their different artistic visions tended to clash during the creative process. It's no coincidence that for "The Wall," they needed an outside producer, Bob Ezrin, who managed to mediate between their conflicting ideas and bring balance to the project (Comfortably Numb is the result of this policy). In any case, they shared very similar ideas, calling this multi-layered music "cathedrals of sound." Beyond their production talent, there was also a determination to not surrender to the simple verse-chorus structure, offering instead a musical journey where different layers represented a way to move from one point to another. The Pink Floyd's greatest strength was their ability to use technology for purely emotional purposes. This is what set them apart from many in the prog scene and electronic music in general.
I just love watching people 'discover' Pink Floyd...it just warms my heart. Im a 71yo Lifetime Pink Floyd fan and live in New Zealand. Let me tell you, Nothing gives me a bigger buzz than watch a new generation experience what we did back in the 1970’s and still do. There’re two major live concerts that will be requested which are Pulse 1994 & Pompeii, many of the songs are extended from the audio version. So Looking forward to more PF.

i was 16 when i saw my first pink floyd concert in 1977. i had only been a casual fan at the time. just stuff i'd heard on the radio. that concert (the animals tour) changed me from a bubblegum/pop fan into someone who paid attention to more than just a good beat. it made me start using my brain,and look differently on the world around me. the next day i went out and bought animals,and that whole summer i bought as many of the pink floyd back catalog i could find. i immersed myself in their music for 3 months,and when i went back to school in september i was a more mature person than i was when i left in june. that's carried on all through my adult life,and i'm so glad to see it happening over and over again now. people discovering the band,and themselves, through pink floyd's music.

Pink Floyd's heyday was in the years from 1973 thru 1979, four monster albums that define '70s rock: 1973: Dark Side of the Moon 1975: Wish You Were Here 1977: Animals 1979: The Wall Listen to these four studio albums in order, and your mind will be well and truly blown. After you've done that, if you like, go and explore the earlier stuff, and the LIVE stuff. Don't get distracted by the folks who want you to wank to LIVE Comfortably Numb. You'll get there eventually. But in my opinion you have to start with the base, especially in light of how you reacted to Shine On. Happy listening my friend.
I agree. I recommend listening to the studio version of each song prior to listening to the live version or watching the video. The studio version allows you to hear nuances and details that get lost in the live versions and videos. You’ll enjoy each live performance and video even more after hearing the studio version first.
I feel you. The pain when magic comes to an end is just killing. Please, please, address each next album from beginning to end. Not for me or 'us', but for yourself. Listening to Pink Floyd is, as you have learned, an experience.
It's hard to imagine that music can be this good-I've always been convinced that PF are from another planet. EDIT: This album was in honor of one of the founding members of PF, Syd Barrett-you are correct. While he did do drugs, he also had some serious mental health issues. The band had a very difficult time, emotionally, dealing with Syd no longer being a part of things-especially when they had their masterpiece DSOTM come out after Syd was out of the band. This album is really a reflection of the band's feelings about Syd and losing him as a band member, as they grew to new heights. Never worry about not having all the details of the bands you cover. You clearly enjoy music and are willing to learn-no one can ask for anything more as a music lover.

Fun (and sad) fact: at 14:54 the notes on synth that can be heard just before the song ends are a call back to an early Pink Floyd single 'See Emily Play' (released in 1967) which was the Floyd's first big hit. The particular lyrics it quotes in those notes is "Emily tries but misunderstands". This was a small addition from Richard Wright (the keyboardist) paying his tribute to Ex Pink Floyd band mate Syd Barrett, whom the song 'shine on you crazy diamond' (to which the words Shine, You and Diamond are an acronym for Syd) is dedicated to or more or less the album (Wish You Were Here) as a whole.
Nice reaction man. Hope you enjoyed it as much as it looked like you did. If you find yourself listening to this again (and any Pink Floyd song for that matter) on your own with headphones at some point, take yourself away from listening to the lead instruments in any given moment, and place yourself aurally somewhere beneath the surface around the bass or drums. What you'll find is layer upon layer of other instrumentation that you didn't realize were there initially. Pink Floyd are deep. Not talking about the message they're trying to convey. Rather, I'm talking about the individual pieces of instrumentation they use to build a greater piece as well as the use of space between the instrumental pieces that allows the song to breath. This song in particular is so expansive and to feel it completely you have to dive below the surface. Anyhow, in the last "sad " part of the song, where you say "I get the sadness in the end..." at approximately the 14:54 mark of your video, you can hear the keyboardist play a little riff that is a direct homage to Syd Barrett, the founder of the band for whom Shine On... is a tribute. Pink Floyd certainly play with your emotions. Rick Wrights keyboard work in this track is outstanding. If you listen to more PF, be aware that some of the joy comes from the transitions from one song to another that they do so perfectly on many of their albums. Echoes live at Pompeii from 1972, the live 'Pulse' performance of the stellar 'Comfortably Numb' (you're really gonna loose it when you hear that one), are my essential recommendations for live performances. But I'd also say that for the most part, the studio recordings are the way to go to experience the perfection of Pink Floyd. Try beginning with the 1973 album 'Dark Side of the Mood'. This album shot Floyd in to the firmament of success and in 2020 became the first album to spend 950 weeks in the Billboard 200 charts, an incredible achievement. Pink Floyd created the modern symphony - it is timeless and will last forever....it does take you on a journey... just like the classical symphonies. I will never tire of this music. Hundreds of years from now we will still be listening to Pink Floyd!!!!
Something that characterizes PF music is their ability to know EXACTLY how long to continue the various phases of the instrumental portions (movements?) of their songs before transitioning to something else. On first listens I would sometimes think that they overdid some of the instrumental segments, but I would always come to realize that no, they were right--each separate musical interlude continues as long as it adds something and enhances anticipation as to what will follow, but no further. Their ability to do this is almost uncanny.
It was interesting when you mentioned you could visualize things while listening. Sid had the condition Synesthesia. What Is Synesthesia? Synesthesia is when you hear music, but you see shapes. Or you hear a word or a name and instantly see a color. Synesthesia is a fancy name for when you experience one of your senses through another. For example, you might hear the name "Alex" and see green

Great reaction! Shine On You Crazy Diamond (written by Gilmour, Waters, Wright) is a masterpiece. In many times it's considered enough until the end of Part V. (The fans who came to the live concerts think that this much is enough and the band members also prefer the same, according to whole composition is long in duration.) But the depth in the composition can not be interpreted unless especially Part IX (written by Wright.) Part IX is a downbeat chord progression with a classical approach, which leaves the sadness presented in the main theme of the song as a residue to the listener. Musically, the song is in G natural minor (Aeolian) scale, but with hints of the G Dorian mode with the inclusion of the E (raised sixth) note in various parts throughout, most prominently in the four-note theme in Part II. A total piece of art..

I think one of the best aspects of Pink Floyd is that each of their songs shows how talented they are as a band some songs it's Roger Water's bass lines that drives the song others it's Nick Mason' s drums or Rick's keyboards and always Gilmour's guitar and of course the vocals whether it's Rodger, David or Rick
However a lot of times it was Gilmour on the bass as well or at least showing Waters how to play it. Waters was mediocre bassist at best when doing these albums although he likes to take credit for everything. The masterminds behind the music were Gilmour, Wright and Mason(highly underrated drummer!)

Syd Barrett, the founder of Pink Floyd did do a lot of LSD. However, LSD was a catalyst to what was really going on. IMO it was mental illness,Schizophrenia. He never was the same after his psychotic break. I cry every time I hear this song. Enjoy the Floyd and listen to the early stuff with Syd. All five of them are geniuses. There is no other band like Pink Floyd. They are incredible with how instruments alone can pull the amount of emotions out of one person that they do. The whole album is worth reacting too. Dark side of the moon album by them was one of the greatest selling albums of all time and a MUST listen too.

From the people that were closest to Syd (Band members, sister) it has never been confirmed that it was acid that brought his downfall, Syd may have gone that way regardless of whether he took acid or not. Syd did a 7 day LSD trip according to his girlfriend at the time and band members said he wasn't right when they found him. They think was a combo of both but the drugs did him in.
“Echoes” - is one of most similar tracks to Shine on You Crazy Diamond. - there are many different versions - I think the best is from the film “Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii” This is a 1972 movie partially made from the band performing at the ancient Roman amphitheater in Pompeii, Italy - with no audience beyond the basic film crew. Talk about incredible ambiance. Yes the Pompeii version of Echoes is fascinating, but begin with the album version. It has everything of the genius that was then injected in Dark Side Of the Moon and Shine On you Crazy Diamonds. Once you have heard the studio version, then you can watch the Pompeii one.

The end said it all.... "How Many Layers.?" Rick Wright gives you Everything in about 8 layers of keyboards and David Gilmour gives you heaven in about 10 layers of guitars. The best word for their music is SUBLIME. Like the Beatles there is no-one else like them.

PULSE is live 1994 and should be done in its entirety as well (especially since the second half is all of Dark Side and it takes on its own personality live), and tracks from Delicate Sound Of Thunder which weren't on PULSE. Delicate Sound Of Thunder concert is a 10/10, PULSE IS A 15/10.
You REALLY should listen to the whole Wish You Were Here album through in one listen, as with Dark Side of the Moon. Or, if you don't want THAT long of a video, please at least do just two sessions. On Wikipedia you can clearly see the track listing for what was originally the 1st side of the vinyl LP, and then the 2nd side. That is the way to divide them in two. Within each side of these LPs all the songs segue from one to the next with no audible break between them.

The true beauty of appreciating music like this is that everyone is welcome. The more that listen, the better it gets. I remember my introduction to Pink Floyd my second year in college, 1984. My buddy brought over “The Wall” and we listened to it in candlelight. I never turned back. It would be seriously trippy to see you react to “Thick As A Brick” by Jethro Tull.
You're on the right interpretive track. Structurally, "Shine On, You Crazy Diamond" stands on both sides of a central section of songs about the dark side of the music industry and its effects ("Welcome to the Machine," "Have a Cigar," and "Wish You Were Here"). Syd Barrett becomes the structural principle of the entire album, whether the songs are about him or about his absence, about the effects on him or the effects on the band, and the entire album at the same time speaks to common experiences of many who don't have to go through what Syd and the other band members did in order to understand the emotional roller coaster of experience they lived through and felt (your area!). But Brian it is important to listen to "Echoes" and "One of These Days" from the "Meddle" Album. The Meddle Album marks the band's transition from psychedelic rock to art rock/progressive rock. So it was an important Album in Floyd´s History. Please hear it, before you went to "The Dark Side Of The Moon". In my opinion it is important in the historical sequence. So you better understand how the musical development of Pink Floyd went further. You have a better understanding and more you when you went on this timescale. Dark Side of the Moon was on the Billboard 100 chart for 491 weeks and stayed in the Billboard 200 just shy of 750 weeks from ‘74 thru ‘88. Before much longer, it could reach 50 million units in record sales.
I don't often post comments on any reaction videos and when I do it's often been to add in a few tidbits about the band that might be of interest. This comment, however, is aimed directly at the reactor Mr Squeeze! I tripped across your channel by accident and I am very grateful. I find your reactions to be so honest, so unrestrained, it's like you figuratively strip your heart and your mind bare for us to look at and it is so refreshing. It does take us old time Pink Floyd fans back to the days in our teens when we listeed to them on their new vinyl that had just come out. While there is much to be gained by listening in the order that the albums came out and in the order the songs are on the album, don't let that stand in the way of just listening. It would be a shame to miss anything purely for the sake of structure. I know that your reaction to the first part of the song could have been offensive to some people who know the backstory behind the song, because you were expressing an emotion that in context of the whole picture might seem out of place. But to be honest, if I narrowed my context simply down to hearing that song with no other knowledge, I agree with you. It does stir up primal energies and emotions and thoughts that are certainly not politically correct these days haha. But for anybody that's been to a memorial service and the wake or reception that ensues later, you probably are aware of the lustful emotions that can be brought to the surface by those functions. The human mind and emotions are a complex thing and tragedy sometimes spawns lustfulness. It is sometimes hard to admit but we are animals and it's amazing that there's a song that can remind us of that. Thank you, sir, for reminding us and helping us peel back the stoic veneer that we often develop over the years. That being said, just don't ask which one is Pink, my friend.

I loved your visceral reaction to both halves of this song. I know most folks are saying you need to listen to the entire album instead of just random songs. Well, yeah, the albums do tell a story and you’ll get the full context of each song when you listen to it in the order in which it is intended. But the songs stand on their own musically and lyrically if you are not trying to dissect them, so go ahead and enjoy them in any order that suits you. I’m confident that, like the rest of us Pink Floyd fans, you’ll come to a point where you’ll want to hear the album from start to finish and will look forward to hearing those same songs again at the time. I Love to see people discovering Pink Floyd. I told my kids they could put me in a nursing home, as long as I had my Pink Floyd and player😊 There was an interview with a serial killer, I believe Richard Ramirez, (but could be wrong) where he was asked what kind of music he listened to, and he said Pink Floyd. When asked why, he said that you don’t Hear them, you FEEL them. They don’t have a bad song. Please give a reaction to The Great Gig In The Sky. I think this journey would be Nuclear. the whole song is a tribute to the original band member Syd Barrett, who suffered from undiagnosed skitsophenia (sp), plus burned himself out on acid. They hadnt seen him in 7 years until he showed up at the recording studio in the middle of the night while they were in the middle of recording this song. No one recognized him at first. Syd was an artist first but was their main writer until they kicked him out because he was just banging the guitar or just standing there not doing anything, and David was brought in to help the band, which took the band in a different and definitely positive direction

There's a thing Pink Floyd does, and which a lot of bands did in the 1970s and 1980s, is they gave you *layers.* They gave you *depth of sound.* And it's really all about the technology.
Modern music is almost all digital. It's highly produced, quantized, time-shifted, sequenced, looped, sampled, and digitally edited. The volume of the track is normalized and EQ adjusted so nothing is allowed to be *quiet* any more. There's no more stuff in the background to catch your ear, because it's all in the foreground. It's all designed to sound good with subwoofers and ear buds and highly specialized sound equipment.
But the guys in the 1970s and early 1980s, what they had was *tape.* They had multi-track tape, each track with its own level, and the engineers had to fiddle with it manually until it sounded good. And sometimes they had to bounce all 8 tracks, or all 16 tracks, down to 2-track stereo so they could fit more crap in. And it all had to work and play nice together, because there were no digital do-overs. So what you got was stuff happening way in the back, instruments doubled, twin guitars, overdubbed vocals, and this rich and lovely tapestry of sound. And nobody did it like Pink Floyd.

Waters and Gilmour were certainly talented producers, but their decision to self-produce their music often proved problematic. Their different artistic visions tended to clash during the creative process. It's no coincidence that for "The Wall," they needed an outside producer, Bob Ezrin, who managed to mediate between their conflicting ideas and bring balance to the project (Comfortably Numb is the result of this policy).
In any case, they shared very similar ideas, calling this multi-layered music "cathedrals of sound." Beyond their production talent, there was also a determination to not surrender to the simple verse-chorus structure, offering instead a musical journey where different layers represented a way to move from one point to another. The Pink Floyd's greatest strength was their ability to use technology for purely emotional purposes. This is what set them apart from many in the prog scene and electronic music in general.
The more Pink Floyd is out there on people playlists, the better world we live in.

Let me tell you, Nothing gives me a bigger buzz than watch a new generation experience what we did back in the 1970’s and still do.
There’re two major live concerts that will be requested which are Pulse 1994 & Pompeii, many of the songs are extended from the audio version.

i was 16 when i saw my first pink floyd concert in 1977. i had only been a casual fan at the time. just stuff i'd heard on the radio. that concert (the animals tour) changed me from a bubblegum/pop fan into someone who paid attention to more than just a good beat. it made me start using my brain,and look differently on the world around me. the next day i went out and bought animals,and that whole summer i bought as many of the pink floyd back catalog i could find. i immersed myself in their music for 3 months,and when i went back to school in september i was a more mature person than i was when i left in june. that's carried on all through my adult life,and i'm so glad to see it happening over and over again now. people discovering the band,and themselves, through pink floyd's music.

I can simplify all of this for you. Pink Floyd's heyday was in the years from 1973 thru 1979, four monster albums that define '70s rock:
1973: Dark Side of the Moon
1975: Wish You Were Here
1977: Animals
1979: The Wall
Listen to these four studio albums in order, and your mind will be well and truly blown. After you've done that, if you like, go and explore the earlier stuff, and the LIVE stuff. Don't get distracted by the folks who want you to wank to LIVE Comfortably Numb. You'll get there eventually. But in my opinion you have to start with the base, especially in light of how you reacted to Shine On. Happy listening my friend.

I agree. I recommend listening to the studio version of each song prior to listening to the live version or watching the video. The studio version allows you to hear nuances and details that get lost in the live versions and videos. You’ll enjoy each live performance and video even more after hearing the studio version first.

I feel you. The pain when magic comes to an end is just killing. Please, please, address each next album from beginning to end. Not for me or 'us', but for yourself. Listening to Pink Floyd is, as you have learned, an experience.
It's hard to imagine that music can be this good-I've always been convinced that PF are from another planet. EDIT: This album was in honor of one of the founding members of PF, Syd Barrett-you are correct. While he did do drugs, he also had some serious mental health issues. The band had a very difficult time, emotionally, dealing with Syd no longer being a part of things-especially when they had their masterpiece DSOTM come out after Syd was out of the band. This album is really a reflection of the band's feelings about Syd and losing him as a band member, as they grew to new heights. Never worry about not having all the details of the bands you cover. You clearly enjoy music and are willing to learn-no one can ask for anything more as a music lover.

Fun (and sad) fact: at 14:54 the notes on synth that can be heard just before the song ends are a call back to an early Pink Floyd single 'See Emily Play' (released in 1967) which was the Floyd's first big hit. The particular lyrics it quotes in those notes is "Emily tries but misunderstands". This was a small addition from Richard Wright (the keyboardist) paying his tribute to Ex Pink Floyd band mate Syd Barrett, whom the song 'shine on you crazy diamond' (to which the words Shine, You and Diamond are an acronym for Syd) is dedicated to or more or less the album (Wish You Were Here) as a whole.
Nice reaction man. Hope you enjoyed it as much as it looked like you did. If you find yourself listening to this again (and any Pink Floyd song for that matter) on your own with headphones at some point, take yourself away from listening to the lead instruments in any given moment, and place yourself aurally somewhere beneath the surface around the bass or drums. What you'll find is layer upon layer of other instrumentation that you didn't realize were there initially. Pink Floyd are deep. Not talking about the message they're trying to convey. Rather, I'm talking about the individual pieces of instrumentation they use to build a greater piece as well as the use of space between the instrumental pieces that allows the song to breath. This song in particular is so expansive and to feel it completely you have to dive below the surface.
Anyhow, in the last "sad " part of the song, where you say "I get the sadness in the end..." at approximately the 14:54 mark of your video, you can hear the keyboardist play a little riff that is a direct homage to Syd Barrett, the founder of the band for whom Shine On... is a tribute. Pink Floyd certainly play with your emotions. Rick Wrights keyboard work in this track is outstanding. If you listen to more PF, be aware that some of the joy comes from the transitions from one song to another that they do so perfectly on many of their albums. Echoes live at Pompeii from 1972, the live 'Pulse' performance of the stellar 'Comfortably Numb' (you're really gonna loose it when you hear that one), are my essential recommendations for live performances. But I'd also say that for the most part, the studio recordings are the way to go to experience the perfection of Pink Floyd. Try beginning with the 1973 album 'Dark Side of the Mood'. This album shot Floyd in to the firmament of success and in 2020 became the first album to spend 950 weeks in the Billboard 200 charts, an incredible achievement.

Shine on You Crazy Diamond is a masterpiece. Absolutely an experience. Like so many different tracks from Pink Floyd. Check them out live. Pink Floyd were masters to create emotions and energy on stage.
Pink Floyd created the modern symphony - it is timeless and will last forever....it does take you on a journey... just like the classical symphonies. I will never tire of this music. Hundreds of years from now we will still be listening to Pink Floyd!!!!
Something that characterizes PF music is their ability to know EXACTLY how long to continue the various phases of the instrumental portions (movements?) of their songs before transitioning to something else. On first listens I would sometimes think that they overdid some of the instrumental segments, but I would always come to realize that no, they were right--each separate musical interlude continues as long as it adds something and enhances anticipation as to what will follow, but no further. Their ability to do this is almost uncanny.
It was interesting when you mentioned you could visualize things while listening. Sid had the condition Synesthesia.
What Is Synesthesia? Synesthesia is when you hear music, but you see shapes. Or you hear a word or a name and instantly see a color. Synesthesia is a fancy name for when you experience one of your senses through another. For example, you might hear the name "Alex" and see green

Shine On You Crazy Diamond (written by Gilmour, Waters, Wright) is a masterpiece. In many times it's considered enough until the end of Part V. (The fans who came to the live concerts think that this much is enough and the band members also prefer the same, according to whole composition is long in duration.) But the depth in the composition can not be interpreted unless especially Part IX (written by Wright.) Part IX is a downbeat chord progression with a classical approach, which leaves the sadness presented in the main theme of the song as a residue to the listener.
Musically, the song is in G natural minor (Aeolian) scale, but with hints of the G Dorian mode with the inclusion of the E (raised sixth) note in various parts throughout, most prominently in the four-note theme in Part II. A total piece of art..

Ah you've hit my favourite Pink Floyd track, this always moves me and I love watching people listen to this for the first time, of course my 2nd favourite track is parts I-V
I think one of the best aspects of Pink Floyd is that each of their songs shows how talented they are as a band some songs it's Roger Water's bass lines that drives the song others it's Nick Mason' s drums or Rick's keyboards and always Gilmour's guitar and of course the vocals whether it's Rodger, David or Rick
However a lot of times it was Gilmour on the bass as well or at least showing Waters how to play it. Waters was mediocre bassist at best when doing these albums although he likes to take credit for everything. The masterminds behind the music were Gilmour, Wright and Mason(highly underrated drummer!)

Syd Barrett, the founder of Pink Floyd did do a lot of LSD. However, LSD was a catalyst to what was really going on. IMO it was mental illness,Schizophrenia. He never was the same after his psychotic break. I cry every time I hear this song. Enjoy the Floyd and listen to the early stuff with Syd. All five of them are geniuses. There is no other band like Pink Floyd. They are incredible with how instruments alone can pull the amount of emotions out of one person that they do. The whole album is worth reacting too. Dark side of the moon album by them was one of the greatest selling albums of all time and a MUST listen too.

From the people that were closest to Syd (Band members, sister) it has never been confirmed that it was acid that brought his downfall, Syd may have gone that way regardless of whether he took acid or not.
There are many stories out there circulating about Pink Floyd that are not true at all.

Syd did a 7 day LSD trip according to his girlfriend at the time and band members said he wasn't right when they found him. They think was a combo of both but the drugs did him in.
“Echoes” - is one of most similar tracks to Shine on You Crazy Diamond. - there are many different versions - I think the best is from the film “Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii” This is a 1972 movie partially made from the band performing at the ancient Roman amphitheater in Pompeii, Italy - with no audience beyond the basic film crew. Talk about incredible ambiance. If parts of the piece sound familiar it is because there is a riff that sounds much like parts of the title piece of the musical Phantom of the Opera (that was made many years after.

Yes the Pompeii version of Echoes is fascinating, but begin with the album version. It has everything of the genius that was then injected in Dark Side Of the Moon and Shine On you Crazy Diamonds. Once you have heard the studio version, then you can watch the Pompeii one.

Nobody puts out more emotional music than Pink Floyd, and when David's guitar interacts and communicates with Richard's keys it's nothing short of magic. Looking forward to more, buddy! Finish up this album first (Welcome To the Machine, Have A Cigar, Wish You Were Here) just to close this book, then work your way through Meddle, Obscured By Clouds, Live At Pompeii 1972, Dark Side Of the Moon, Animals, The Wall, The Final Cut, A Momentary Lapse Of Reason, Division Bell, then double back to the beginning with Arnold Layne and See Emily Play, Piper At the Gates Of Dawn, A Saucerful Of Secrets, More, Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother, and finally The Endless River. PULSE is live 1994 and should be done in its entirety as well (especially since the second half is all of Dark Side and it takes on its own personality live), and tracks from Delicate Sound Of Thunder which weren't on PULSE. Delicate Sound Of Thunder concert is a 10/10, PULSE IS A 15/10.

You REALLY should listen to the whole Wish You Were Here album through in one listen, as with Dark Side of the Moon. Or, if you don't want THAT long of a video, please at least do just two sessions. On Wikipedia you can clearly see the track listing for what was originally the 1st side of the vinyl LP, and then the 2nd side. That is the way to divide them in two. Within each side of these LPs all the songs segue from one to the next with no audible break between them.

The true beauty of appreciating music like this is that everyone is welcome. The more that listen, the better it gets. I remember my introduction to Pink Floyd my second year in college, 1984. My buddy brought over “The Wall” and we listened to it in candlelight. I never turned back.

You're on the right interpretive track. Structurally, "Shine On, You Crazy Diamond" stands on both sides of a central section of songs about the dark side of the music industry and its effects ("Welcome to the Machine," "Have a Cigar," and "Wish You Were Here"). Syd Barrett becomes the structural principle of the entire album, whether the songs are about him or about his absence, about the effects on him or the effects on the band, and the entire album at the same time speaks to common experiences of many who don't have to go through what Syd and the other band members did in order to understand the emotional roller coaster of experience they lived through and felt (your area!). Loved your reaction, and peace to you!

No other Band can compare with Pink Floyd, Musiclly, Literally and Emotionally. They are unique and form their own league. But Brian it is important to listen to "Echoes" and "One of These Days" from the "Meddle" Album. The Meddle Album marks the band's transition from psychedelic rock to art rock/progressive rock. So it was an important Album in Floyd´s History. Please hear it, before you went to "The Dark Side Of The Moon". In my opinion it is important in the historical sequence. So you better understand how the musical development of Pink Floyd went further. You have a better understanding and more you when you went on this timescale. Dark Side of the Moon was on the Billboard 100 chart for 491 weeks and stayed in the Billboard 200 just shy of 750 weeks from ‘74 thru ‘88.

I don't often post comments on any reaction videos and when I do it's often been to add in a few tidbits about the band that might be of interest. This comment, however, is aimed directly at the reactor Mr Squeeze! I tripped across your channel by accident and I am very grateful. I find your reactions to be so honest, so unrestrained, it's like you figuratively strip your heart and your mind bare for us to look at and it is so refreshing. It does take us old time Pink Floyd fans back to the days in our teens when we listeed to them on their new vinyl that had just come out. While there is much to be gained by listening in the order that the albums came out and in the order the songs are on the album, don't let that stand in the way of just listening. It would be a shame to miss anything purely for the sake of structure. I know that your reaction to the first part of the song could have been offensive to some people who know the backstory behind the song, because you were expressing an emotion that in context of the whole picture might seem out of place. But to be honest, if I narrowed my context simply down to hearing that song with no other knowledge, I agree with you. It does stir up primal energies and emotions and thoughts that are certainly not politically correct these days haha. But for anybody that's been to a memorial service and the wake or reception that ensues later, you probably are aware of the lustful emotions that can be brought to the surface by those functions. The human mind and emotions are a complex thing and tragedy sometimes spawns lustfulness. It is sometimes hard to admit but we are animals and it's amazing that there's a song that can remind us of that. Thank you, sir, for reminding us and helping us peel back the stoic veneer that we often develop over the years.
That being said, just don't ask which one is Pink, my friend.

RIP Syd Barrett. I like all music and I love both Tupac and Pink Floyd so I've been on this journey with you from the beginning. So glad to see someone else who gives all music a chance.

I loved your visceral reaction to both halves of this song. I know most folks are saying you need to listen to the entire album instead of just random songs. Well, yeah, the albums do tell a story and you’ll get the full context of each song when you listen to it in the order in which it is intended. But the songs stand on their own musically and lyrically if you are not trying to dissect them, so go ahead and enjoy them in any order that suits you. I’m confident that, like the rest of us Pink Floyd fans, you’ll come to a point where you’ll want to hear the album from start to finish and will look forward to hearing those same songs again at the time.
I’m now a new subscriber because of the sheer joy you demonstrated on these two videos. At first, I thought it was an act, but now I see that it’s genuine. I’m looking forward to cycling through your current work and watching your future reactions.

There was an interview with a serial killer, I believe Richard Ramirez, (but could be wrong) where he was asked what kind of music he listened to, and he said Pink Floyd. When asked why, he said that you don’t Hear them, you FEEL them. They don’t have a bad song. Please give a reaction to The Great Gig In The Sky. I think this journey would be Nuclear. the whole song is a tribute to the original band member Syd Barrett, who suffered from undiagnosed skitsophenia (sp), plus burned himself out on acid. They hadnt seen him in 7 years until he showed up at the recording studio in the middle of the night while they were in the middle of recording this song. No one recognized him at first. Syd was an artist first but was their main writer until they kicked him out because he was just banging the guitar or just standing there not doing anything, and David was brought in to help the band, which took the band in a different and definitely positive direction
i remember the first time i heard this. it was the whole album straight through. i was a sophomore in high school and stone cold sober, but somewhere while hearing SYD [syd barrett?] i thought i was dead
