    What if your injury was caused by lifting weights in the first place?...
    Does it matter whether your injury originates from playing tennis (or golf) computer use - OR heavy, physical work?
    Allen Willette of Tennis Elbow Classroom answers these and several other Tennis Elbow-related exercise questions in this info-packed video.
    Yes, your answer will vary, depending on whether your injury originates from low-intensity / high duration work, like computing…
    Medium to high intensity (but shorter duration) sports like tennis, golf, badminton and lacrosse…
    Or from long-duration, heavy, physical work, like construction.
    Also, tips on how to “be smart” about it if you do decide to continue working out while you have Tennis Elbow.

    Hi, awesome video, super informative/ Quick question to ask; I injured myself I guess by trying many times to do handstand and I started feeling pain on my elbow. After doing exercises to decrease pain, got worse and I got a cortizone shot. It helped for 6 months. Pain came back, I wonder if u suggest plasma treatment before doing surgery? the cortizone shot made my bone thinner and weaker, the doctor stated not a good idea to get another cortizone shot. I would be very much appreciated to hear back from u, thanks

    Using straight bars will aggrivate it. Hence using EZ bar for biceps is less stress on the elbow pre injury. Avoid all pulling exercises. Pull ups are the biggest cause in the gym with slipping of grip and cheating flexing of the wrist. Hence gymnastic rings offer a natural path of movement.
    Look after your pronators. These are over looked make sure you strength these. I had this injury for 6 years before the internet and utube in the late 90's. Mine is tendonosis. Only learnt of that term yesterday. Thank God for utube. It has it's benefits.

    You did a great job of explaining the entire concept in a very simple layman's language.
    The tennis elbow not only hurts your muscles but also creates mental stress as it derails one from all the core activities. I have been suffering for over 7 weeks and it is settling down. I hope there is a quicker mechanism for healing this injury. Never in my wildest dreams, I thought accidentally hitting my elbow on a door post have such ramifications on all my activities.

    Please if you can reply and help me out this would be great, I've been training for my first powerlifting meet. I've been training more than 8 to 9 months, I've recently being doing a low bar squat where the bar is positioned between my traps and my rear delts. With that I have my grip width on the bar some what from medium to long for keeping that shelf and tightness in my back to stabilize the bar on my back. Months ago I went to the doctor with the same prolem and now since it was healed up I got back into it going back up in weight and what I've been usually doing for my work sets. Is there anyway I can manage and lessen to nearly eliminate or to at least minimize pain?

    My last two episodes of tennis elbow (caused by tennis) has presented quite differently. It is strange.
    Previous tennis elbow was quite painful when playing and I had to stop playing for 2 months. But it was not painful when not playing or turning doorknobs, etc. And no pain at all at night. Recent tennis elbow is very painful at night but only mild to moderately painful when playing. Have not had to stop playing. Pain actually improves after I start playing whereas previous episode of tennis elbow, the pain was unbearable when trying to play.

Question: is it okay to do physical therapy exercises to ensure it doesn't come back after the injection wears off...Eccentric Wrist Extension, Pronation Supination with Dumbbell, Wrist Flexion Stretch...stuff like that?

    I have had bouts of golfers elbow from guitar playing, lasting up to 4 months at times. I had it more recently again, going on 3 weeks, i try to do some light upper body only a few sets, like curls, pull downs, bench and shoulders. I have no pain, but I just notice that maybe later in the day or next morning some fleeting irritation, not really a pain just slight annoyance. My pt tells me it's fine to work out those muscles if I don't have irritation doing it, it just makes me worried I am doing more damage and slowing recovery. It's actually most annoying at work being a bench chemist like holding and pouring a bottle cause more irritation than a fifteen lb curl .

    Hey sorry I got my tennis elbow from a very weird way. I've been working out for a few years now but I didn't develop the injury through training. I corrected my diet and started making progress with training and overall bodybuilding however as my forearms grew in size, I kept clenching and eventually my right forearm developed the injury. Any thoughts on weightlifting and continuing with training. Also my arm doesn't hurt during under am movements such as bicep curls but hammer curls are a big problem.

    Thanks for your videos on the subject. Im almost convinced that I created my tennis elbow from a spontaneous dead hang that I did 3 weeks ago off my pullup station. Although I didn't noticebly feel an injury happen in that moment, I started having issues the next day-pain from gripping and lifting in my dominant arm.
    At 52, I want to be aggressive on my elbow recovery but be sensible about how long it will take.
    Any advice would be appreciated. Thx

    Very helpful information confirming my points of vew to this case.
    You mentioned three reasons but still left one out, which in my case i faced it in two times. 4 years ago I hit my right elbow's outer bone to a wall in two consecutive occasions and I ended up having tennis elbow for the next 3 years!! I tried so many things to heal it but nothing seems to work out, until a year ago I woke up in the morning and all of a sudden the pain was gone and it was gone for good!!. My happiness did not take so long as 7 months ago I hit my left elbow bone somewhere and here it goes again!. I am back to you tube to try and understand more about what is going on. (no where i hear or read tennis ellbow can be a result of a hit) why is that?. I thought it might be something else then a tennis elbow but all the symptoms resembles just that. I wonder if you can give me a hint which can help me in my sitiuation? Any help is welcome. Thank you in front and greetings.

    This was a great informative video since I have been for some time already dealing with the tennis elbow pain... My injury was triggered by strong hit with a radiator at elbow level since then pain began and started to be more intense. Usually I work out lots and with heavy lifting but that didn't cause the injury. I had to sacrifice my heavy lifting to limited exercises that when I am doing them I do not feel the strain on tendons , I lowered significantly my weights and I do not even touch the dumbbells as they trigger pain on the epycondial area tendons... together with some recovery exercises , physiotherapy ( I already got two injections by a Dr and long term doesn't help) , changing my work out routine and patienceI think I am in the way to recovery... but this video helped me to understand the way I am doing things is the right way ( hopefully) Thanks a lot!

    Hi,
    I would like to know what your opinion is on deadlifts. I have had tendinitis on the inside of my arm for about 9 months now. Just started to get over it so i have been getting back into the gym for the last 2 months. What is your advice on sets reps and weight.
    Thanks,

    • @TennisElbowClassroom
      @TennisElbowClassroom  9 років тому

      jake40233 So, the inside of your forearms? Sounds like Golfer's Elbow. I would think deadlifts would be a bad idea for you. That's a lot of weight to be gripping. I don't have any recommendations on reps and weight - except "less." - Did you develop your problem from lifting weights in the first place?

    Tennis Elbow Classroom Thanks for the video and great info. So i wanted to ask you question to see what your point of view was. I am 27 year old male who is a highly active athlete who plays golf and weight lifts and would not give that up for the anything. I had elbow pain for about a year and then decided to get my surgery. I felt it was the best decision because I could not live without my active life style. I had surgery on 03/14/2014 to repair a small tear I had on my tendon. The recovery has been steady but kinda slow. It has gotten better however it been 10 months now and I able to play golf but every time I play the pain reoccurs(about 5 on 1-10) and i'm concerned because i thought i would be good by now. So my question to you is should i stop playing ( the patience would kill me), is their anything I could do better? I was thinking about getting "Thera-band" i'v read positive feedback on it. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

    • @TennisElbowClassroom
      @TennisElbowClassroom  9 років тому

      Hi Raul, Glad to hear the video was helpful. Should you stop playing golf? Tough question.
      Pain at 5 on a scale of 10 from playing - 7 months after surgery sounds like a lot. But you din't specifically state whether you feel that much pain while you're playing or that's how much it hurts afterward = And important distinction.
      Like I say in the video, the most important thing is that you're not having a lot of pain while you're exercising - After may be alright, depending on how bad it is and how long it lasts.
      What are you doing for rehab? Are you getting or doing any tissue work on your muscles and tendons? (My big thing!)
      When you mention the Theraband thing do you mean the Flexbar? Well, that might be a good idea. You do here good things about it. Here's my take on that in another video:
      "Rubber Bar" Rehab: Is Eccentric Exercise The Key To Tennis Elbow Treatment?

    I don’t have tennis elbow, but I do have lower bicep tendinosis (mostly in my left arm, but sometimes acts up in my right) and possibly tendinosis in my shoulder, I’m pretty sure from working out too much in high school (which is when the pain started). I’ve had it for years, and like you said, rest never really helped.
    My doctors arent really helpful with specific advice, and I was hoping you could offer some.
    1. What kind of exercise schedule works with tendon recovery? Should I go really light and every day, or more moderate level and only twice a week or so?
    2. So you are saying I should stop taking cold showers after my work outs?
    3. Should I still do my compound movement exercises, and maybe keep them lower intensity, or just focus on isolated bicep movements?
    The only thing I’ve learned over the years is to take it really slow and to not push for progress too fast. It’s just so damn annoying being 24 and not being able to do pull-ups or pushups (because of the shoulder/chest, too).
    I will take your advice on cardio, though, because everything, even my shoulder, felt really good after a game of basketball

    • @TennisElbowClassroom
      @TennisElbowClassroom  8 років тому

      +Tiffany schiffer What do you mean by "did you catch it in time?" I'm not entirely sure what a kickboxing and strength band class entails, so it's hard to say. The more intense, fast and unpredictable an upper-body activity is the more risky it will tend to be for your Tennis Elbow. Generally, it's usually much better and safer to be doing slow, measured and controlled movements and exercises when one is recovering from an injury.

    • @TennisElbowClassroom
      @TennisElbowClassroom  8 років тому

      +FanFriggnTastic How much wrist action is involved with jumping rope? (I don't do it, so I'm not sure about the amount of wrist motion involved.) I know it involves some - and it's obviously of a low intensity - but then it usually involves a lot of repetitions, which can be trouble for Tennis and/ or Golfer's Elbow. My guess is that it will probably depend on how long you do it. Try it for a short duration and see. If it doesn't bother your elbow try doing it a little longer next time.

    • @TennisElbowClassroom

      Unfortunately, rowing is just about the worst thing you can do when your have Golfer's or Tennis Elbow - Although, you're probably much better off on the erg than on the water, since the erg rowing motion is more limited and predictable. Did you develop your injury from rowing in the first place? - If you did then it will likely be even more aggravating if you continue. (Not that you necessarily HAVE to stop. It depends, as I say in the video.)

I can bench and press way more than my back and arms can cope with. My injuries are 12 months old and I suffer no pain ( at all) during exercise but they are becoming irritated next day. Is this a sign I should stop training? Im only training back and arms until I can I get some balance. The plan is to introduce chest and shoulders again when built up other areas. Is this the correct way? Is the damage Ive done permanent and should stop training altogether.? Ive been training again 3 months. . Again pain is minimal but its there and only the day after.2 Ibuprofen gets rid of it until I train again. Im training 2 to 3 times a week and doing minimal sets. I really dont want to stop training. @@garbagepailkids81 nah mate, I also got chronic pain in the neck and back. Physically I was reduced to a husk of what I was. The pain was so constant it really fueled my depression to the extreme.
      Now that also led me to face my biggest insecurities straight head on. I had become a weak man and that led me to ask all sorts of questions to myself about the way I live life.

    After working out yesterday, i noticed my elbows looked different, i'd describe it as like a dent between a muscle and the elbow point. And on the right arm, i have the dent with a smaller muscule sticking out which makes the dent more noticeable. I tried some exercises to see if i had tennis elbow but i had no pain. So what are these dent like marks on the elbow area?

      So it's been a week now, i never had any pain as such, just a feeling that you can feel pulling of your tendons/ligaments what ever it is when i'm typing or gripping something.
      So i lifted on Sunday at the night this dull ache was on allnight. Since Monday afternoon it's gone back to a dull feeling again around the elbow area through gripping or typing.
      I saw the Doc today who said it was tennis elbow, i told him it was after lifting weights. He said put your arm outright straight and bend your hand back, i did this, and had no pain, the area around my elbow isn't tender either. He said apply ice twice a day for 5-10 mins and gave me some ibrobrufen gel to apply 3 times a day.
      So it's a dull feeling of pulling on tendon. No real pain, just a feeling. But not a nice one. I'm typing with it now though so, not good.
      I've had it a week now and it's not painful just aggriavated feeling.
      I've stopped lifting now. The doc said it can take weeks or months to heal.
      I've watched vids on helping the elbow, such as holding arm outright and pulling arm stretched back a little along with one where you hold your arm up and then let it drop and also put your arm on a pillow, then with two fingers rub across the fibres which is said to tigthen scar tissues.
      Are these all okay for me to heal the tendon ?
      I have a job starting Monday where it will involve lifting furniture.
      So i am worried about this and want it to be healed before i start and worry it could get worse.
      What can i do now to repair this? I've stopped lifting, apply ice and the ibrobrufen gel wich is for inflammation.
      Thanks

      I can't just tell you what to do here in a youtube comment. I have this whole channel about Tennis Elbow and a website dedicated purely to Tennis Elbow to help you and others. Simplistic, 1,2,3 advice gets people into trouble and often leads them to do things that make their problems worse.
      There is no magic bullet and one needs to take the time to understand what the nature of it is - And I can tell you this, to start: Inflammation is NOT the problem.

    • @deanVodkahouse

      Tennis Elbow Classroom it eased up on the Friday evening, i dont feel the dull pain when texting/typing now just a very slight feeling. So it's not completely gone but during the job its been fine, ive been lifting furniture today and had no discomfort in my arm. Its not completely better, still some little feeling of overworked tendons/ligaments and but its a slight dull ache if i continue to text over a couple of minutes. I apply ibruprofen and did stretching exercises along with rubbing my fingers across the fibres in my arm to strengthen the scar tissue. I stopped doing this regularly since sunday so hopefully this will get rid of all the uncomfortable feeling.

    I've had mine since around June, and I stopped working out for 2 weeks and it did nothing, actually got worse. But the main thing that hurts it is sleep. Waking up is when it always hurts most. On the other hand when I workout, it feels decent on certain exercises. I wear a tennis elbow brace when somewhat helps I guess. But yeah its very aggravating. I got it about 2 weeks after I joined the gym, and I definitely dont want my $300 wasted lol

      @TennisElbowClassroom  7 років тому +4

      When Tennis Elbow is beyond mild and is more moderate to severe, many if not most people have pain at night and almost everyone wakes up with it stiff and painful. I think you're probably better off continuing to work out as long as it doesn't hurt while you're working out.
      And, of course, avoid the exercises that are extremely challenging to your Wrist Extensors: ua-cam.com/video/5Ltq1gUxehU/v-deo.html
      I would stop using the brace if I were you (except while lifting weights and doing heavy work) My video on braces: ua-cam.com/video/RyMO88fV9cI/v-deo.html
      And my tactic, on the rare days I wake up with a tendon all stiff and sore (once in a great while in my wrist - probably from too much computer time and lifting too heavy at the gym) is to hit it with the hottest water I can stand in the shower first thing in the AM to get my circulation really amped up in my forearm!

Im just thinking like "i'll do whatever it costs" Im really tired of this. 15 months and i still feel pain if i grab something 10-15kg so i wanna try everything. I hope my neural therapy helps a little bit. Doctor said im too young for cortisone injection so he is doing neural therapy with serum injection to my elbow. Btw im really happy about finding your channel.

      That makes sense. My tendon injury happened 20 + years ago when I was around your age and it ruined my happiness, too.
      I had a fantastic job doing Massage Therapy at a gorgeous spa at a ski resort at the time, which I ended up quitting after not being able to recover, went back to waiting tables, carrying heavy trays and such, but it was different work and I was fine - Never any pain doing that.
      Eventually I got back into my chosen field and now these tendon problems are my specialty.
      (Really glad to hear that your Dr. didn't want to give you Cortisone shots. That's the worst possible thing you can do, in my opinion - not to mention all the medical studies that show it weakens and damages tendons in the long run.)
      All the best to you!

    • @TennisElbowClassroom
      @TennisElbowClassroom  7 років тому

      I suppose it's possible that this could be your first sign / warning of Tennis Elbow - but that's just not enough to go on. If you don't have ongoing pain I don't see why you wouldn't be able to resume weight lifting, just be sure to take it slow and easy for the first few weeks. Muscles respond rather quickly with exercise, gaining strength more rapidly than tendons, which take longer to adapt to the increased load. This can lead to overconfidence and subsequent tendon injuries when trying to progress too quickly.

    • @lindal6237

    This cardio business is going to raise the cars all cortisol which raises stress of raises anxiety which reduces healing and this is why I got into weights in the first place and then it was weights that got me the tennis elbow cuz going to heavy with the curls so if or once I heal I'm definitely going lower weight going slower and focus on time under tension and building tendons strength

    My elbow felt fine until I tried barbell curls rather than my usual ez bar and dumbbell bicep curls. I did 3 or 4 sets of barbell curls and had tennis elbow the next day. It felt better with a few days of no lifting, I went to the gym and really made it angry with me. I feel like the extreme supination from the barbell is to much stress on the elbow, I should have stuck with the ez bar.
    I've already had arthroscopic surgery on the other elbow and am not very interested in going threw another 2 years of agony.

    skull crushers are a problem too right for tennis elbow?

    • @TennisElbowClassroom
      @TennisElbowClassroom  9 років тому

      Skull Crushers could be a problem for some Tennis (and Golfer's) Elbow sufferers - especially if done the "classic way" with a barbell.
      I love Skull Crushers, but I only do them with Dumbbells, so I have independent triceps activation and can keep my wrists in a more "neutral" position... Imaging palms facing each other (like in a Hammer Curl position) instead of forward/up. What do you call that? Double Dumbbell Crushers??
      I think at some point this exercise is a great addition to a Tennis Elbow rehab routine, and I think Biceps and Triceps exercises in general are a good 1st or 2nd step toward doing more complicated, multi-joint exercises (like the Bench Press, which I would probably hold off on for awhile if I was recovering from T. or G. Elbow.)
      And for anyone else who's wondering, "Which exercises should I avoid if I have Tennis Elbow?" - Here's my video with my thoughts on that: ua-cam.com/video/5Ltq1gUxehU/v-deo.html

I felt like it was accumulated through time and it appeared suddenly after I stopped exercising for one week.

    Can you get tennis elbow from the way you sleep?

    • @TennisElbowClassroom
      @TennisElbowClassroom  4 роки тому

      I seriously doubt that you can develop Tennis Elbow from your sleeping position - However, a large percentage of sufferers have expressed concerns to me over the years that their sleeping position was making their Tennis or Golfer's Elbow injury worse.
      (And that's possible but I think it's more likely to simply be the nature of the beast: Once you have it, sleeping and not moving for hours allows the tissues to stiffen up and that gets uncomfortable.)
      Of course, sleep is essential for healing! I don't believe any damage is being done - It just often gets more symptomatic, which often means little or nothing.
      Some people swear that keeping it warm at night helps. I've heard that a loose-fitting neoprene sleeve can be useful in that regard - Just make sure it allows full circulation if you use one!

      @TennisElbowClassroom  9 років тому +1

      As a Massage / Neuromuscular Therapist myself, I would definitely say, yes!
      And as a word of wisdom to all of you in this field:
      Although I've always made it a practice to get regular Bodywork myself, there was a time when I wasn't doing any strength training and I really suffered for that.
      For the last 7 years or so, I've had a regular, upper and lower body strength / weight training routine - and I've never felt better, stronger and more able to do my work with my clients.
      And, most importantly, I don't have any of the wrist, elbow, shoulder and other repetitive strain issues that plague so many in this profession.
      (Part of my story and what likely led me to specialize in tendon problems / Tennis Elbow is that I had a crushing bout of "Tenosynovitis" in both wrists at the very beginning of my career, 25 yrs ago, when I starting working in a big spa in a ski resort in Vermont. I learned a lot of hard lessons then, but it still took many more years to really understand the importance of upper-body strength training!)
