Huge respect for your toneassity and perseverance regarding the repairs, not to mention you two are probably the most deticateted employees I've ever seen. Whoever your employer is up north I hope they see how lucky they are to have employed such deticateted workers......Fair sky's and following sea's Skipper, first mate and of course jetty

Sorry to hear about your breakdown in Port Royal Sound. I feel for you guys. You are so talented to be able to make the repairs yourself. Your attitude is unbelievable. Kudos to you both. You WILL make it to LI. You are making the most of it and you will have the memories forever. Don't forget to look for the Adventures In Fishing t-shirt at the Coinjock marina. Remember sometimes day markers & bouys can be missing so stay in the middle of the channels and always look at the depths on the charts. We found that out with a hard grounding on a friend's boat in 2001 in Morehead City, NC. Keep the videos coming & safe cruising.

Sierra has the best attitude ever! You and Jetty, too! First chance I got, I'd have that shaft pulled and checked. It may be bent. Hopefully, it's just an alignment issue. Enjoying your videos immensely.

Boats will break. Good thing you're in a boat building area. Stay the course. Try to stay positive and enjoy every day, even the ones where you're temporarily stuck and making repairs. It's a beautiful place to be stuck with boat trouble. Happy to see you're on the move again. You'll get it fixed soon enough. Give Jetty a pat for me. Luck guys!

it's basically a clutch plate make sure you use an alignment tool to make sure it's centered or you'll eat that one up too...

    • @alphasxsignal
      @alphasxsignal 7 років тому +4

Does he have a alignment tool?????? There must be someone in the area that could come out and help him install that clutch plate so it is installed correct.
Come on boating people in the area help these two out.
They need a new Trans and someone to install it with a warranty.

You can use your fingers and align it fine. IF you know how it's supposed to feel. (at least with clutch plates I have done 100s successfully this way)

A clutch plate on a car needs to be aligned to facilitate the insertion of the transmission shaft through the clutch plate and into the pilot bearing/bushing. On this application, the drive plate and its splined hub is a single piece. The bolt holes in the plate will allow little 'play' to need alignment. The splined hub in the plate will be centered so that the transmission can be inserted. The transmission has only a stub of a shaft. It doesn't extend much beyond the drive plate. I do not believe that there is a pilot bearing.

The breakdowns suck... But the good news is that you two are inspiring people! TODAY I put a deposit on a 1985 Catalina 27 with inboard diesel. This is going to be my liveaboard / learner for the next 18 months or so while I save up for the money down on a Catalina 380 liveaboard. A brand new chapter/adventure in my life at 47 years of age. You guys, the Wynns and La Vagabonde are my sole inspiration. I just wish I'd have started 10 years ago. But nonetheless, as of September I will have sold most of my possessions, be rent free and starting a new chapter of my life. So thanks for that, I think!! :)

so sorry to hear about your troubles. I have a '79 trawler with twin Ford Lehman's, I'm a fanatic about maintenance but never considered the health of my dampening plates. Too bad you had all the problems with your transmission, I guess that's the life of person who spends this much time on the saltwater.
The only good side is that everytime you break-down you learn the fix. You should be commended for the tenacity you both possess in handling these issues. You both seem to keep your sense of humor during the tough times!

inspect your flywheel when you take that clutch plate off and because the last one that you broke it look like the Springs might have gouged the flywheel if it has you're going to tear up another clutch, until you take that flywheel off and have it resurfaced. you also have to make sure that you have adjusted properly for enough slippage. good luck guys

I think it would be worth some money, just so it all gets lined up properly and you don't have recurring problems. My two cents - thanks for recording, editing and your adventures.

I am sending a HUGE HUGG to you and your wife. I absolutely understand the what, and the why of your generous offer. You have an attitude of gratitude, and that is a wonderful thing to feel.
If a person has never been truly down, they just can't understand what it feels like. It's also been said that if you've never had your heart 💔 broken, you will never be able to experience true love ❤️. My most sincere wish of respect and gratitude to you, and I'm sorry that someone took your beautiful offer and stomped on it. I applaud you. You're my kind of people.

Hi Billy, we have a 79 marine trader Europa 34 but it has the same motor as yours. I haven't seen it mentioned that you need to change the injection pump oil every 50-100 hours. The newer 135 hp versions had the injection pump fed by the engine oil, not so on the 120's. It doesn't take long but it's recommended by Ford. If you don't have the link for the maintenance on that motor I can send it to you. It covers valve adjustment as well.

A high idle would prematurely wear the damper plate as engaging and disengaging forward neutral or reverse would force it to wear out.
Think of a throw out bearing on a clutch and dropping the pedal with the revs up everytime.
    Same concept good luck.

The dampener plate is attached to the crankshaft of the engine and the transmission is attached to the dampener plate. It does three different things: 1) It transfers the rotation of the engine to the transmission. 2) It provides a gear for the starter motor to engage. 3) It provides some of the balance needed for the crankshaft.
The dampener plate looks like a flywheel with springs around the circumference and is hidden inside the rounded (bell) housing on the back of your engine. Several things could cause it to be out of balance and cause vibration: 1) One or more of the springs could be broken and have pieces missing. This could happen due to age, or rust and corrosion, or repeated hard shifts into gear. 2) Some of the teeth that the starter motor engages could be broken off. This is not likely unless you have problems starting the engine occasionally. 3) One of the balance weights could have broken off. This is the least likely of the three things to occur.
If you hear a rattling noise at idle or a clank when you put the boat in gear then the problem is likely due to broken springs. Find a good troubleshooting mechanic (not just a parts-putter-oner) and have her remove the starter and inspect the dampener plate. It needs to be done with a lighted scope or a mirror. It won’t be a conclusive examination but if one of the things mentioned above is found, then that is the likely source of your vibration.
If everything looks okay, it could still possibly be the dampener plate, but there are other external things to check before you spend the time and money to have the bell housing and transmission removed to get a closer look at the dampener plate. Such things could include a bad or loose spark plug wire, a bad spark plug, a loose engine mount, a badly worn belt, or a loose vibration dampener on the front of the engine. Also don’t overlook the obvious things like a bent propeller blade or a bent propeller shaft. Best of luck to you in tracking down the problem.

If the plate is not set right or aligned right it will cause friction and eventually vibrate to pieces if u get a alignment tool just make sure there's no wiggle or movement in the plate.

I agree with Big O! That thing will indeed burn up IF it isn't aligned. Aren't you glad that you have a decent tool box to do this work? Nothing worse than NOT having what you need to get the job done. That area really looked beautiful. Too bad there wasn't more time for exploring. IF the repairs work, how long will it take you to complete your trip?

having experienced the same breakdown , the answer is to get the other kind of plate . really lost reduction gear like once a year for like 3 years , finally switched , and I noticed you part is the kind we changed away from .

Jetty mentioned in her last video that Her and Her people were broke down again. Sorry to hear about your misfortune. The clutch should have some sort of adjustment to compensate for wear. If it is slipping it will get hot and fail. If it is not disengaging completely when you shift between gears it will shock load the clutch disk.. There should be some measurement on the "free travel" of the cable and shift lever either at the controls or level on the transmission. I would search for info on shift cable adjustment.
