Depends on if they had a green or red. Clearly they were moving pretty fast to go that far out of control after being hit. They'll fault the red car for failing to yield and the engine drive for the same thing because, as you said, they must allow traffic to clear/stop before proceeding through intersections if they don't have the right of way.

Take the rose-colored glasses off and dial into reality. Your way would mean that someone was running a red light at the exact moment an emergency vehicle was crossing the intersection. Go but a lottery ticket right now. Based on reality, it is more likely that the emergency vehicle ran a red light and was hit by a person moving forward with the green light and didn't see the engineer driving irresponsibly.

I could hear it (which is why I didn't proceed on my green while I tried to figure out where it was) but it sounded far away and I couldn't see any lights reflecting from things. Traffic across the intersection didn't move and the semi didn't either, but the car next to me went and stopped short the moment they cleared the semi. The ambulance was running full signals but didn't blow through at high speed so it was able to navigate around the stopped car - which is about the time the sirens became a LOT louder.

Just came across this story, I am a retired engineer and I don't know the policies of this department but far as I know, all emergency vehicles must adhere to all traffic laws and little known fact is, the only thing lights and sirens are for is to basically clear a safe path to a call and go through red lights once you as the driver make a complete stop to make sure there are no vehicles in your sight of travel and once you've determined that then you may proceed through a red light. It's obvious that for this type of damage and a debris field this large, the engine was traveling way to fast and disregarded the intersection rule I hope everyone has a speedy recovery. Any engineers reading this don't allow the Captain or anyone to tell you how to operate your apparatus as you are in control and always operate safely and within the laws as this engineer is about to have alot of legal issues to deal with plus the conscious of the victims.

No one has the right to be unsafe. It's up to all of us to do our best to actually be alert. This means able to hear sirens. So we can pull over and stop. Not to be looking at phones or putting on make up while driving. But you know. Accidents do happen. These guys put their lives at risk everyday for us. A 50 ton red vehicle 30 feet long with a siren and flashing lights should be easy to spot. And they can't stop on a dime. And if full of water it sloshes causing unstability. But yeah we all need to be vigilant them and us. Take care. Keep your eyes open. Lol.

I live in the Sacramento area and drivers here are horrible at ignoring emergency vehicles! They won’t pull over to the right and they don’t care if emergency vehicles are entering an intersection…and let me just say those drivers are predominantly Asian and middle eastern. Here in CA we are taught to move TF over and that’s always in every DMV test.

Now we have had three semi trucks running into buildings with people in them and a barge running into a bridge. And this morning I saw where another barge has trouble with their engines. A lot of things including cars are all running into buildings and birthday parties where there is always kids that are dying. It looks like a theme to me.

If the traffic lights there don't have the little white lights that alert to upcoming emergency vehicles going code 3/sirens, this would be a sad but perfect example to underscore why they are so important. Where i live they shine solid white if the vehicle is parallel to your road and flash if perpendicular. I assume it's the same everywhere but don't know.
That's helped me when I didn't hear the siren yet or at least it always causes me to slow down even when they're not in my area yet
I don't know further information on this yet although I'm going to look it up. Cuz my first reaction is it's going to be the red car's fault and of course they're the ones that have no injuries of note.
That cheap cup of gas station coffee probably saved that homeowner's life. I'm so thankful for that! I feel so awful for the poor truck driver though 😢

Emergency vehicles can only go through red lights after the driver has made sure all civilians see them and will yield the way to them. Try Thinking instead of just following.

Emergency Responders always have the right of way. You are required to get over or stop. It looks like that city needs to do a month of police escorts and give out tickets to those who don't obey the get out of the way law. It's a fact that if you cause them a delay that cost the life or lives of the victims they are enroute to help, the person responsible for delaying the responders can be charged with murder. They can prove the amount of time the delay caused them was the amount of time they needed to save them .
Just like they can use the Emergency vehicle to shove a vehicle out of their way if the driver won't move . If a vehicle is blocking the fire hydrant they can run the hose through the vehicle. They are not responsible for the damages and the vehicle owner's insurance company will reject the claim.
Not being able to hear emergency sirens is one of the reasons why it's actually against the law to have an automobile radio at high volumes (people tend to forget because cops hardly ticket for them anymore). Cops should really start writing some long overdue tickets. Emergency Responders needs to start taking plate numbers again and having police escorts for a couple of weeks periodically (atleast do it a couple of days a week randomly)

OK, I know I'm going to take some flakk here, but here it goes...Let me guess...the fire truck BLEW the redlight without slowing down to check CROSS TRAFFIC before going on it's mission....I know all the news is not in, but I don't care, I have seen it time and time again, an emergency vehicle may be blasting it's sirens, and strobe lights if that little device they MAY have to change the lights is slower to react than the emergency vehicle passes through the intersection, THEY NEED to slow down a bit and LOOK before they cross.....I know they are not ALWAYS trained that way....WE as civilian motorists are SUPPOSED to watch each intersection we pass through and see/listen for lights and sirens.....but even governed at 70 mph......sometimes we civi's just cannot react in time...I feel if they (emergency response) just takes that second to slow down and LOOK...IF the light for THEM is red, it could stop a lot of this sadness...that extra second can stop a inadvertent crash/fatality....am I wrong? And like I said before, I was not there, and I know the investigation is still on to determine exactly what transpired in this particular crash. JB91710 is correct!!!
